I should be getting my SGS tomorrow coming from the nexus one (CM 6.1 RC1) which im giving to my girlfriend to keep around for 2.3. Ive been lurking the forums since Friday trying to decide which Froyo Rom to install and i would like to have some opinions from you guys to help me decide. Basically im looking for an everyday driver for stability so i dont end up throwing my phone out on the highway lol. I know all froyo release for SGS are leaks but from what ive seen on the forums run decent enough to suit my needs. Thanks in advance!!
It's all just a matter of personal taste. They all appear to be good daily drivers at this point. I personally prefer Team Whiskeys work and all the black that comes with it. I also hate the Touch Whiz Launcher so Onyx is the best fit. Very stable, faster than most and has great battery life.
Personally, I have only used Obsidian (V1 and V2) Version one had a few bugs that I didn't want to deal with, so I went back to Fusion 1.2 until V2 came out the next day. I have been running Obsidian V2 for about 1.5 days now and I have had absolutely no problems. I haven't had any FCs or random shutdowns, etc.. It is very snappy and I have been getting very good battery life (I still had 12% battery left last night after about 15 hours, and for much of that time I was using it heavily (texts, calls, graphic intensive games, etc..)) I have seen good reviews for the other Roms as well, however, I can only speak for Obsidian V2 and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for stability. However, some people have encountered some bugs, so make sure that you read the instructions carefully and you should be fine. You may wait for V3 to come out too, since I am guessing it will be coming out pretty soon.

Thanks for the input. From what ive seen of touch whiz, i dont like it either. Ive been leaning more towards team whiskey so i will def have to check out their work for sure.

Ive checked out their forums as well.
Again personal taste. I didn't really like the bionix rom, it felt a little slower to me than Eugene's R10 and his roms are constantly improving. Right now waiting is the best answer as both of them are still making adjustments and should have updates within the next couple days.

That said, I'll put in a plug for Anderdroid's AOSPish Froyo ROM.
With some trepidation I flashed it earlier this week and to say that I am pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. It's a really good ROM. It's fast, it's been very stable for me, and the battery life has been fantastic - by far best battery I've experienced yet on any ROM.
Also, I haven't tried any of the Bionix Froyo builds, but I am coming from the Bionix Final ROM, which was great, but I just got tired of all of the blackness - and the incredibly cheesy boot/shutdown sounds.
Anderdroids Froyo ROM has a stock Android look, which I'm really liking at this point. Very clean, nice looking ROM.
I'd definitely recommend it.

That rom also peeked my interest as im not interested in samsungs bloatware A.K.A touch wiz. Not fond of boot up or shutdown sounds either but i think im gonna check out Onyx first then get my AOSPish on. Its look pretty clean.
^ you know you can delete the sounds right? The file paths are in the sticky. I agree, first thing I did was delete those.
The one that is least modified gave me the least amount of problems.

This is def going to be my first flash when my phone arrives. Im assuming you just flash through recovery without messing with odin. Odin seems like a PITA but, im sure i will get accustom to using it. My phone can not come in any sooner. Im about to join loserville and call off work to play with my phone all day lol. Im sure i would'nt be the only one here who would do such a thing
If you have a new phone you just root it and then go and download ROM Manager for Root Users (Clockwork) and install that. Then flash Clockwork recovery and boot into Clockwork and flash Onyx. Getting the downloads and the files copied over is probably the hardest part of doing it, lol.
what is this onyx that you guys are speaking about? Is it the same as Obsidian?

True, but I'm just looking for ROMs that people recommend/use daily that work well. I'm gonna try DamageR right now, I've already tried DamageControl and Flipz, so I'm gonna try some other ones and see how it goes.

SEARCH AND READ...that's seems to be the answer to every single post being made today. It's all here in black and white. One search I recommend in all honesty is search the word:
"BENCHMARK" and read the thread started by flipzmode. It's a really good read.
I heard that CakeButt.ClownPenis 1.3 was really fast!!!! Check it out.

I just spit coke all over the computer at school...thanks Kbizz.
RegawMOD is pretty good and the new FreshToast is also fast once it's setup right... I've tried just about every 2.1 rom available on this site and those are the ones I like the most.
I know it benchmarked the worst but as far as regular use RegawMOD 2.1 is the best and fastest running rom in my experience, that is also on the .29 kernel...
If you search for flipzmode benchmark you will see that all 2.1 rom all run about the same speed.
Other then flip/toast OC rom should run the fastest and its the only rom that will actually show a big difference in benchmarks.
Water it down like all the other "fast" roms and youll have one that is actually fast do to overclocked processor.
Its not made for everyone, and the camera isnt working yet (i have a feeling its not far away).

Hey no problem!! Bout choked myself when I first read it.. My favorite rom name to date!! Wish I could cook.....
This is hardly a scientific analysis, but I have been running DC, flipz, and Regaw's roms interchangably for the past few weeks, and today switched from Sense to the Helix launcher.
The biggest difference in UI performance came from ditching Sense...it was actually a noticeable difference in responsiveness
That being said, I don't think you'll notice a whole lot of difference between the individual ROMs with Sense, so base your choice on what programs/features each ROM has versus which is fastest...in everyday use, you won't be able to tell a difference, IMHO.
So I got DarchVanilla, and I really like it, but the market doesn't have all my apps.. Is there a fix for this yet?? I really like this one, it's very responsive and close to lag free.

+1 The reason I chose RegawMOD is because it was basically a stripped down rom. It allowed me the room to load the programs that I wanted without having to strip useless (for me) programs from the rom. Very nice, stable.
I've found that using Ic3Rom with some apps removed from it, the old OpenGL restored on it, and Launcher2 installed, it's incredibly fast. It looks like AOSP, but has the current stability and function of a HTC ROM. Give it a shot if you haven't
I've used almost all of the roms available out there I thing fresh works better, if u don't want lag you would hve to use aosp

+1 for RegawMOD being the best of the ones currently available that gives me what I want. I really like fresh 2.0d except that is was really laggy IMO too. I can't handle laggy, and RegawMOD doesn't appear to have any of that lag, and so far everything I need and want works just fine on it, including googlevoice, but I only use googlevoice for my voicemail, no idea about sending and receiving calls with it.

OK so hopefully my N1 should get to me tomorrow, and I'm wanting to put a ROM on it (think its just running stock 2.2.1 ATM according to the seller).
I'm quite drawn to MIUI at the minute, because of speed and battery life, and I quite like the hybrid iphone/android look, but I have read some comments that this isn't quite an every day ROM just yet, as it has a few issues and bugs.
The other I keep reading about is CM6 but what is battery life and speed like? Is this a more complete ROM than MIUI or am I better off with the former?
Are there any good ROMs I should consider other than those - I am after something that is fast, reliable, and pretty (the pretty isn't essential but is desirable).
I know I could look for myself, but I figured that opinions from those who've tried different ROMs in anger would be very useful.
It really is a personal preference thing. So try them all, that's the great thing about the N1.
I didn't like miui, too iPhoney, but a very nice rom none the less.
CM6 is the rom I use, very complete and feature packed. Speed is excellent but battery life less than others. But with IntersectRaven's kernel I get pretty good battery life
Enomther rom is another good one, with really good battery life. Evil's sense ports are really good too
But really you have to try them, you will find one you like
Best of luck, and welcome to one of the best phones you will ever own

Crazy idea, if you're new to Android, how about using the stock ROM for a while? Even if you're not new, using the stock ROM is a good way to gauge if the phone is solid.. If you put $random_rom on it and you have problems you won't know if it's the phone, the ROM, your apps, etc..

I'm not totally new to android - my girlfriend has an HTC Magic with Cupcake on it, and I've briefly owned an HTC Desire (had a fault) and have had a Galaxy S for the last 4 months (which I'm getting rid of because it's unreliable).... but you do make a good point about the phone, so thanks I may do that, but I'd still like suggestions because I can't see it staying stock for long
Evil D:'s NXSense is pretty awesome!
+1 for staying stock. Once you find something you want to do but stock won't let you, then it's time to go with custom rom.

MIUI is stable and is my everyday ROM based on speed, battery life and stability. If you don't like the default iPhone looking launcher, just use LauncherPro.
Enothemer's ROM is also very nice.
I thought CM6 was the bomb but realised that Enothemer/MIUI had most of what I needed to tinker with anyways. Battery life was horrid with CM6.

I'm using v1.15 of Evil's NXSense ROM, and I absolutely love it! It's fairly stable and the battery life is great -- I routinely can go 48 hours with light-moderate use. I'm particularly impressed with Sense, which is so much better than I believed it could be.
The only thing I miss from stock is the unified inbox for email.
"Fairly" stable you say? :-s
Incidentally I've just read about the fact the power button on it WILL break, is it really that flimsy :-o I was under the impression these things were well built?
Anyway thanks for the ideas, I always thought sense on the htc desire was pretty nice, is this evil d rom better than that?
Might have to get myself swype as I'm quite used to it on the sgs now.

Please don't make it look like MIUI comes from Enom, kthx.
Run the stock rom long enough to learn what it is, otherwise you dont know what you had to start with and wont know what you gained or lost. Its good to keep in mind that most roms will only partly meet your needs and will likely have something in them you dont want where you might actually prefer the stock version over whatever was added. You wont know that if you dont fiddle with stock long enough to see what it brings to the table. If you are relatively new to flashing roms consider a conservative stability first rom like enom to start out.
MIUI is what i'm currently using and i'm really digging it
it's got good battery life and an overall good experience
highly reccomend to use it with launcher pro though, as the iphone look is very ugly/cluttered IMO
if i were you though i'd hold off on MIUI since it does have a few bugs and since you're just getting the phone tomorrow it'd be kinda hard to distinguish if the problem was with your phone or the rom,
on that note, staying stock for a couple days wouldn't hurt but if you're anything like most of us here you're probably eager to get some custom roms on there
anyway i digress, enom's got the best battery life hands down and there's plenty of tweaks and customizations (although not as many as cyanogen's of course) and it's an extremely stable and dependable rom. for me it's kinda like my "go-to rom"
as for cyan's rom, it's a nice rom with an myriad of tweaks and options but i've always had battery life issues with it.
evil's nxsense is also a sweet rom if you're into sense and battery life/stability isn't too bad on it.
actually, any way you slice it, you're gonna have a great rom on your phone! so i say try 'em all and have fun haha
Currently on Bionix v and it's just too tempting.... time to flash!
Any advice for me? The choice is the latest release of Axura (2.3.1) or Trigger (2.5)...

First let me say that I think that all of the Devs here do a fantastic job, and in the end it is probably a bit subjective as to which ROM you prefer. I have seen many say that both Axura and Trigger are the bomb... and there is only one way to find out! The only other reason would be that it appears that the Devs of these ROM's are a bit more responsive - not that TW is not - it just somehow seems that they are a bit overwhelmed (more users, more questions?) and many of the answers come from other users rather than the DEV's .... not bad, just different. Again, I'm not flaming anyone - all of the DEV's here are amazing!
I'd go for Axura because I've been wanting to try it. But earlier this week I flashed Flagship (coming from Bionix) and I haven't been displeased at all.
But it's all personal preference.
I flashed Trigger 2.1 couple a days ago with DoW kernel by Morphic and I can tell you that this beast is incredible fast and so smooth. Couple of months ago I hated my vibrant but now it's running at its real capacity.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
2.2.1 stock beta 2. also works great with the DOW14 kernel.
This is interesting... I would have thought that Axura 2.3.1 would run away with the vote as it is a more mature ROM....

I can say for sure Axura and Bionix don't need it as I have gone between them often.
Personally, I love Axura. It's fast, rock-stable, and there are a nice variety of themes and mods all on their home site (Devsforandroid.com).
I'm a pretty demanding user, and I havn't had any problems or even a moment of lag or buggieness with this ROM.
Just my 2 cents, of course, spend it as you will.

A backup of your files plus a flashing of a new ROM takes about 15 mins max. That's just to get a feel of the ROM and it's functions. So just flash them both, or even more and decide what YOU like.
If you want to test out the battery life, well that will take using the ROM for a few days. No one can truly tell you the difference in battery life because we all use our phones so differently.
I will say this tho: I've used both , and was a diehard TW ROM fan but then I used Trigger. I LOVE Trigger. But it's mostly because of the themeing and because of how involved the dev is in his own ROMs thread with answering questions and taking the users advice, requests, and opinions.
But again, it's really up to what YOU like. Don't listen to dumb quadrant scores and such and others battery opinions. Try them out and see. Both are great ROMS with their own pluses and minuses

Thanks for your expected response.

No need to disable voodoo if you're flashing from the red recovery. It was an issue with the original voodoo kernels (JAC's) and the ulf ones, but not anymore (in my experience, at least). I was also a TW fan until I tried out Trigger a month or so ago. Haven't changed since.
OP, gonna have to agree with the others. It's your phone, your usage. Try each one out and stick with whichever one you like best. They're both great rom's though.

As long as your rom is currently running voodoo then just as the post above mine stated, no you do not have to disable voodoo.
Hold down power button, click recovery, and if it takes you to a red recovery then you can just flash away like normal.
BTW, Trigger just updated to 2.8.1 today with a nice memory tweak and a couple other small tweaks. GREAT ROM
Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate your responses. Will do just as advised. Thank you.
I havent used trigger so I cant comment on it, but Ive been a huge TW fan since Nero 4. Stayed with it and I'm still super stoked about the look and the performance.
Vibrant, Bionix-v 1.3.1, Overstock 2.0, Voodoo...
I used to be a HUGE fan of TW and their roms. I used TW roms since Bionix 1.3.
But ever since I tried EDT roms especially Trigger, I dont think I'm gonna bother with TW anymore. Its just that much better.
Been using bionix v 1.2.1 for a while now. Love this rom.

Right now im using bionix and loving it. Trigger is wonderful as well and it seem faster. they have diffrent thems and small differences here and there. so close i basicly had to nit pick to pick one. trigger i had sms problem had to have it a certain format. could this be fix proabably so. for some reason i had a data issue as well other than that everything was great on trigger fast and smooth. Bionix didnt have those issues for me so i went back im trying to find a problem to send me back to trigger but i havent found one yet im about to test battery trigger had a great battery life for me with overstock 1.5. when i checked the system slept pretty well. it would be at 1% over night while charging. time to test bionix see if it compares thats it
Can't download Trigger 2.8.1
Hi everyone,
I am totally new to modifying phones but I am quite computer literate. I like the Vibrant alot but obviously the original software does not perform too well. I have tried to download the Trigger 2.8.1 ROM via the link in the developers section but I get nothing more than a blank page staring at me. Am I doing something wrong? I would have posted there but since I am new I am not allowed
thanks

Both are good, my preference is trigger but you really can't go wrong with either.

What's up guys. I flashed some roms a few months ago and kinda just stuck with Team Whiskeys Bionix V 1.3.1. It was snappy and had great battery life but after time it seems to have slowed down. I flashed it probably 5-6 months ago. Now its not quite as quick as it once was...kinda seems a little buggy.
So I'm looking to flash a new rom. I'm looking for something that is stable and quick and wont be a bunch of trouble flashing over bionix 1.3.1. Im also running the Overstock kernel if that makes any difference. Let me know things I'll need to avoid if I don't want to brick my phone and what you guys think.
Thanks

I moved on to Phiremod. Enjoying it.
zendroid is the way.
I went from there to the next gen releases for months. I wanted something new to play with so I went to crazy 8 and now project v
I always end up going back to bionix.
I'd recommend OMFGB by roman, very solid AOSP rom.
Try out Project V, has great GPS and battery life.

Me too, I have tried them all and I go right back to Bionix, its fast, great battery, everything works and it has a nice clean design. I love the splash screen no annoying badly designed "themes" or splash screen that look like it was done by a angst teenager. Just a professional highly functional rom. I miss those guys.
Time to move on to gingerbread JVR an Jvs roms are great CM7 2
I went from 1.3.1 to Biffmod. Great battery life and very few minor quirks for me. Have been on it about a month and really liking it. Although I'm still keeping an eye on other ROMs. I feel like I'm neglecting my phone when I don't give it something new!
Good thread actually, I've been on bionix for a while as well. Was thinking about simply honey? Looking for something stable.

i'm on simply stock on talon kernel. it's super smooth so i overlook the fact gps is 100% broken.
I like CM7 a lot, but the 2.2.1 Simply Honey (Galaxy?) was awesome if you don't want Gingerbread... other than GPS and battery, CM7 is pretty much perfect.
OMFGB has ok GPS, it doesn't lock as fast, or sometimes doesnt lock at all, but it gets very close

I like that ^. Its like saying "besides giving me no sex and talking all the damm time, my wife is pretty much perfect." Ahh..sorry no trolling intended its was just the first thing that came to my mind
.....anyways GoodVibe having Overstock don't matter cuz it will get replaced after you flash your new ROM with whatever kernel that ROM comes with but ,since you're moving from Bionix, make sure you disable Voodoo. Try the Bali 1.8.8 kernel if you end up flashing a Froyo ROM that supports it (good battery life). Your gonna have a little more work to do if you go to a GB ROM.
I decided I'm gonna keep Bionix 1.3.1 on my daily Vibrant since I don't have any issues with it and when I get more time try others on my spare Vibrant. If Bionix feels a lil laggy try going to recovery and wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions and see if that helps to refresh it or you could always re-flash it to get it fresh again, but I'm pretty sure your itching to try something new. Luck homie.

+1
I've tried some gb roms (Simply Honey, Malice, GingerZen). They are really good performance-wise. I always come back to ZenDroid with DMZ kernel nightly #3 though, fastest and most stable froyo rom I've used. GPS is fantasic also. Very highly recommended.

I moved on to toxic crazy 8 and it was super fast, stable and surprisingly gps was working!! But the overall layout was lacking color and was too dark so I flashed back to bionix
Have you tried this ?? Its fast and stable.

Thanks mrrob...that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I've been out of the loop for a little bit and I don't feel like reading through 25 threads to figure out what rom bugs out when flashed over whatever kernel or vice versa. And I also don't know what roms are stable and user friendly and what are just nuts. I tried TW frost when it first came out and that wrecked my phone. So I flashed back to jfd and then bionix and quit flashing for a while. Too much risk for me I guess.
Its funny...there are so many roms now. I remember just a few months ago cm7 was new for vibrant and the only other real decent roms were trigger, bionix, and azura I think. Just a few and that was it.
Thanks for the info guys. I have a new TW link to check out but most likely I'll fix permissions and dalvik and if all else fails just reflash bionix 1.3.1.
