Its funny you should say this. I was just telling my wife that the dconfig would be the thing I was would miss most about damagecontrol. It would be nice if cyanogen did something similar.
was wondering when cyanogen(heard so much about) was coming to the EVO.havent flashed any custom rom on my first rooted android device(supersonic) yet but ill def wait for this one to released.....hopefully with god mode kernel included.
Cool, another quality dev for the evo.

Hey all, if you've ever been on the CDMA Hero thread you probably know me, and know that I'm a major theme developer and community support member. I'm most likely going to upgrade in about a week to the Epic, and was wondering how far along rom/theme development is for the Epic, what the best roms are now, etc. Thanks everyone, and I look forward to working with you on Epic development and support!
And feel free to see some of my work on theming in my sig
Please vote in the poll if you can! Thank you And if you vote for the Evo option, can you please tell me why? Thanks
The more devs the better! Look forward to using your work.

There seems to be a lot of drama and desire to program for the fame instead of the scene. Semi-frustrating to see from the perspective of an enthusiast. But I am hesitant to criticize because I am only beginning to dive into android dev.

Most dev work (not that the current leaked Froyo ROMs are not in abundance but nontheless) in my opinion seems to be at a slight impasse except for work on the leaked Froyo but I think other devs are just waiting till it is officially released..

Yeah, I've heard about some of the Epic drama
I can't justify a few loud kids screaming in the playground as drama. It only takes a very few active trolls to derail a thread and once it starts, people tend to stay away. I blame it mostly on the frustration of having to wait on Samsung.
I find that theres a lot of good devs and people like anywhere else. A lot of the bugs (major one being gps which I have not encountered) have been fixed by the leaked Froyo and with its release coming soon (knock on wood) its understandable that the community is going a little slow.
Good devs and helpful members are always greeted with open arms here and I really hope you'll be enjoying your new Epic soon.

Cool cool, I can't wait to get it!!!
Welcome!
We could certainly use more devs!
Really the one major flaw was already mentioned (GPS) and for the most part that had been addressed in 2.2, but I heard there was still a cache issue.
Mic doesn't work in 2.1 with non stock kernels when using the 3.5mm jack. Worked great in my tests with dk05 2.2 but that's stock kernel.
That's all that stands out to me atm.
I'm currently using the syndicate rom 1.0.2 with xtreme kernel 1.2.0 and have been extremely happy with them. I'll probably get bored and flash the latest froyo leak soon though.
As for the drama, I came from the WM 8525 forum and seem to remember people working much better together, but we had some good quality devs/users.
I'm sure as the Epic community continues to mature the drama will lessen. One can hope.
At any rate, I look forward to seeing your work

I don't know that! Cool cool Thanks for that info; so there's official 2.2 on the Epic?
Bumping this because I'd like a few more votes please before I commit and buy one here for my upgrade
That's about it for me. But first a point or two.
Why I came here, what I hoped to provide and why I'm done:
I will be the first one to acknowledge that TW have this thing down way better than I do! I am running Nero Beta 3 as I am typing this! It would have taken me forever to come up with a 2.2 mounting fix, FOREVER. Even more, they were kind enough to give me my own repo on their site. They have been great to me and I have learned so much from them.
BUT, I wanted to provide a little variety for people between the Eugene/Master/TW releases. I think I did just that.
Mjollnir: My first try at a rom, nothing more that just a really, really big theme.
sXe: My second try which included backwards compatible framework.
Volholl: My JK2 / JK6 / JL1 Hybrid
Volholl Valkyrie: Pure JL4
Volholl Ragnarok: Only known 2.2.1 port released for Vibrant, with working wifi and gps - even with the signal related soft boot bug, I was the only one brave enough to put it all on the line and release it,
Volholl PepperKake : Pure JL5 with all images, sounds plus, plus ripped from Nexus S dump
How is it so easy to criticize someone who spends countless hours putting something together for you for free? When you have done nothing for the community other than demand more?
As far as I know, everyone respects sombionix, yet even he has had to come on here and defend a stock release because everyone kept complaining that it MAY have included TW init - which it didn't.
So, that is my rant.
I will continue to release Roms, Themes, whatever you decide to call them - they just won't be posted on XDA for a while, or ever..
Sorry to see it came to this man since I think you have provided some really useful stuff. Sad how people feel the need to troll and criticize things needlessly but I will continue to follow you else where.
Woahhh... Wait, what happened.? I got back within the hour from being with family on Christmas.. More people trolling & flaming people? Didn't we just have a town hall meeting?
Yeah but some people just don't appreciate the hard work of you guys. All they do is come here and complain over little insignificant things because they apparently font get enough attention at home. I don't blame heathen at all for dumping this place. Good thing I can still use his stuff on tw forums.

I am new to this forum and I was lucky enough to grab your Nexus clone for the Vibrant. I absolutely love this rom. That is all.
Honestly, the Vibrant section of this site is going to hell with all these pr*cks pissing off those that actually do something for others. These are the worst of the worst, because not only do they not do anything, but they keep others from doing work as well. Do we really have to be such a$$es while offering criticism?

Less bug in their Driver (Bluetooth, Audio, SOC, WiFi), Modem/Radio, TouchWiz 3, and Android Sources in Froyo will give Samsung a faster way to upgrade.
In the future, after Samsung releases Froyo, expect shorter time to upgrade the Epic to (name an android delicious snack).
And because Samsung has own System on a Chip (hummingbird), Samsung has to develop drivers for SOC, it take a long time to find bug and fixing them for future upgrade.
I hope your right... So whats taking so long with CM6.2 lol ,j/k

He's Noobnl...he's one of our "Gods" here he can do w/e he wants 8)
Silly question... is there a Galaxy-S specific to S. Korea? I *know* it wouldn't be the i9000, because S. Korea is 100% CDMA. I'd expect *that one* to have the most active open-source activity, just b/c that's the model Samsung's own developers would be using in real life.
S. Korea is kind of strange... to Americans & Europeans, it looks closed & proprietary. In reality, it has an *incredibly* active homebrew scene. The problem is, Korean doesn't commonly Romanize loanwords, so if you can't read Hangul writing, it looks more alien than even Chinese, and way more foreign than Japanese usually does. And reinforcing the isolation, it's a big country with domestic dev scene that's big enough to keep most Koreans totally happy... for them, there's not much value to make the trouble of digging through English forums worthwhile.
I know this because I have a Robotis Bioloid robot. Their English software & docs are almost *ancient* compared to the Korean ones. Seeing the gap was very eye-opening.
Anyway, my point is that the sourcecode to the CDMA-related .ko modules we need for Froyo & Gingerbread is probably floating around in public *right now* on a site like XDA in Korea. We just need to find it ;-)

Are they even releasing Froyo or are they jumping straight to Gingerbread? At this point, might as well just skip Froyo all together, but seems Samsung hasn't ironed out all the bugs in even Froyo yet.
There will probably be a new Samsung phone out with Gingerbread by the time they get Froyo out for the Epic. Heck they'll prob release the second gen Epic 4G before Froyo comes out.
Reminds me of my frustrating days as a Palm owner. At least we have devs and roms for our Epic.

This reminds me of my last Android phone. I originally had a Hero, we didn't get an official 2.1 until after the EVO came out. Luckily CM6 came out blew the hero away. and then I blew mine apart, from about 300 yards, with a 30-06.

Eclair, not helpful at this point.
sorry 'bout that
yeah... old post... I didn't see the date until after I posted it. Crap on me.... I had a retarded moment. LOL
I'm confused about something.. (unless recent rumors are true), couldn't samsung just release the source *unofficially* and have developers work on it? And then when their team is ready working out their own stuff, they/sprint can push out their own update?
It would be easier to have patience with Samsung if they actually gave one date and stuck to it. Instead we get Tweets, false rumors, and other phones updating before we get anything. Never again with Samsung.
Is it just me or is Epic development almost dead?
Two-three months ago there was CM6,MIUI,CM7 and more original roms in the works, what happened?
Yeah i know that for CM7 they are waiting for official GB to drop but what about CM6 that was 90 percent finished and MIUI that was almost finished?
I know that we still got roms but most of them with exception of ACS and few others are mostly remixes and tweaks of stock rom.
Our Epic is way behind Vibrant,Fascinate and Captivate.
It's just you. Don't knock what the amazing developers have done for us. We have plenty of roms and we will have plenty once gingerbread drops.
I agree. Feel free to learn how to dev, though. You won't sound like a detractor from the forum.

Damn, I just hit 1,000 posts over there. Big part of it seeming smaller is that the only carrier with the Epic is sprint. Android roms aren't like winmo roms where all you had to do was provision a rom to a particular carrier.

This is my first experience with custom ROMs and I for one am very content with the amount of development for the Epic. I have looked at other forums and yes there may be a larger following, or more talk about development, but a lot of it seems to be garbage. I have flashed and used a few different ROMs now and they are all solid with few if any bugs. SRF is what I am running now and I have not found a single functionality issue. I also love that the Epic devs continue to improve their product instead of releasing some piece of crap ROM and never touching it again. Also the relatively smaller quantity of development makes things like qbking's videos possible and help all of us learn to better utilize the phones potential.
I say cheers to the devs for what they do and the time they put in! I could never accomplish even a portion of what they do. Thanks guys!

Quality over quantity anyday our devs cook up some amazing stuff for us.
Sent from my SPH-D700
I love this phone. That is all.
Sent from Godot's place.
we have several quality ROMs and Themes to choose from
It should come as no surprise really. There are 3 main reasons why it may seem development is slow:
Small community. Meaning that our sample set in which developers are drawn is smaller. Thankfully, this phone was top notch in hardware when it came out, so it increased our chances of having very talented developers since it naturally drew people who seriously appreciated hardware. Hence, why we have a small number of developers but they're all very very good at what they do. It could have ended up with a small number AND not a lot of quality.
Touchwiz. What I mean by this is that we're still waiting on a fully functional AOSP based rom, with CM7 being the closest to completion. Without it, all there is to develop on is touchwiz, and we've pretty much exhausted what we can do with it (so far). Once there's one ROM on AOSP, that allows for more ROMs to be developed on AOSP. Plus, the completion of CM7 could very well attract developers who prefer to develop on AOSP to try a couple projects, and have simply been waiting for CM to be completed. This all ties in with reason number 3.
Froyo. Like touchwiz, we've pretty much done all we can do with it. With the release of gingerbread, it'll open up a whole new opportunity to develop. Remember, we went through the same thing towards the end of eclair's life. Not a whole lot of development, and everyone really just waiting for froyo. The difference was, however, that everyone was itching SO BAD for froyo that a lot of projects were done on DK28; we were truly behind the times then, and so even the developers were willing to play with a leak. Not so much now; we're not AS behind the curve considering there are still few phones (besides newly released ones) on gingerbread. This, too, is much like the anticipation of an AOSP precedent as mentioned previously: it's quite possible that there are potential developers who are simply waiting for gingerbread to be released before coming to this phone.

I don't know, but the easiest explanations are:
More developers? Better chance to figure out the kernel drivers on their own.
It's made by HTC? It's pretty much a known that samsungs kernel drivers are always wacky, and in general, what one phone has doesn't neccessarily help with another. With HTC, their kernel drivers are a little more consistent across phones and it's easier to make things work by borrowing and tweaking.
Linux loaded modules? Don't know if it's relevant, but it's possible to use these to overclock a phone in a round-about way.
There's something that really needs to be laid to rest here regarding the arguement that everybody gives saying "we didn't get cm6 when froyo source was released, so how are we gonna get cm7 just because of gingerbread source?" Two reasons:
One: we only had one dev working on it, noobnl. Now we have a TEAM. And each on is just as if not more talented than him.
Two: we didn't have another device to kang any AOSP driver source from. With cm7, our team borrowed what they could from the nexus s 4g. And rest assured, they DID get a little use out of it.

then by the same logic, since the i9000 has gb, we should too? the only difference in the mytouch4g and most other htc phones is a keyboard and 4g. sound familiar?
