[Q] Restoring my mt4g

I rooted my phone. I flashed it. and i was attempting to put in iced glacier. I messed up one of the steps -.-
On the clockworkmod recovery i backed up my phone.
I restored it then hit reboot now.
I've waited for a while.. But all i'm getting is the mytough 4g screen >.<
Any ideas?

I think I am in the same boat as the OP.
I rooted the Mt4g, backed up stock Sense Froyo with Clockworkmod 3, then installed Cyanogenmod 7 with Clockworkmod 3.
I want to revert back to the stock Sense Froyo. I simply did a restore in Clockworkmod 3 to my Sense Froyo backup, and now all it shows is the white Mt4g screen.
Will clearing the cache and data before restoring the Sense Froyo be my fix too?

The version of ClockworkMod Recovery you are using MATTERS. It MATTERS VERY MUCH.
Froyo based ROMs, including Stock and Iced Glacier, must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 2. Gingerbread based ROMs such as CM7 must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 3.
A higher number does not mean better. There are filesystem differences between Froyo and Gingerbread that require the correct tools.
There is a custom version of CWMR for the MT4G that can handle both types of filesystems (assuming you haven't already used the wrong tools) -- it is called version "3.0.0.6" -- you can look for it on the Development Sub Forum.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I did not know that information at the time when I created the restore file.
When restoring with Clockworkmod 3 failed, I flashed Clockworkmod 2 and restored the recovery made by 3 using 2. Its working so far... It did show one or two errors when I restored.

I've got CWMR v3.0.0.5
Just to be clear. I go into CWMR. Do i wipe cache partition, then wipe dalvik cache, wipe data.. then restore again? or reboot system now?
OR do I need to flash CWMR 2 or 3.0.0.6? If so. How do i do that without going through rom manager? I'm noob.

That is incompatible with Iced Glacier. You can't use 3.0.0.5 with Iced Glacier, or with the Stock ROM. Ever.
In addition, clearing /cache and /data and the Dalvik cache (which is inside of the /data partition, so won't actually do anything if /data is also reformatted) will not solve your problem. Because ....
The partition with the problem is /system -- which is where the ROM lives. That partition is now in EXT4 format, which a Froyo-based ROM cannot access. The Froyo kernel boots (from the /boot partition) and gets errors when it looks in /system.... and reboots. Hence, your boot loop.
Your easiest fix would be to install CM7 so that you have a functional Android OS on your phone. THEN ..... after getting CM7 running, flash a version 2 image of CWMR from ROM Manager (included in CM7), then boot it, and install Iced Glacier.

Sounds like that's the course of action. Any threads leading to how to install CM7 in my situation? I'm watching youtube videos on different things trying to learn the best option. But I don't really want to trust tho

From Recovery 3.0.0.5, mount your SD card for use with USB (in the mounts and storage menu) and transfer a CM7 .zip to the card. Get it from http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=glacier
Factory wipe / System Reset from the main menu of Recovery, and install the .zip as you did Iced Glacier.

CM7 does not include Google Apps. If you were intending to actually =use= the ROM instead of using it temporarily as part of a rescue process, you will likely want them. The .zip can be found at http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/gapps/gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip -- install from Recovery after installing CM7.

Boot CM7. You'll find ROM Manager in the App drawer. Use it to Flash a version 2.x CWM Recovery -- look under "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" at the bottom of the ROM Manager main screen.
Long press the power button. Select Reboot. CM7 will prompt you for what kind of boot. Select Recovery.
Do another full wipe/factory reset. Install Iced Glacier .zip as you did previously, and reboot.

So the second zip is only if I want to keep the CM7 ROM? If I do, then I use that zip to get Google Apps?
Also, before I look under "All ClockworkMod recoveries" will I have to install CWM recovery 3.0.0.6 or 2.x first?
In that case. I'll do some research on CM7 too. Idk if iced glacier is better or CM7. Maybe it just depends on preference?

3.0.0.6 could be used instead of a 2.x version. But it requires its own manual install. Based on the questions in this thread, I'm not recommending CWM Recovery 3.0.0.6 at this point, as you folks do not have a functioning Android system and would have to modify the 3.0.0.6 install procedures. There's only so much knowledge a person can absorb at once. Get your phones working, first.

It is =entirely= a matter of personal preference. There are plenty of people who prefer one over the other. There are also those who prefer neither, and are using yet again another ROM. Poke around in the forum threads here to get a feel for what people think.

sweet. So i'll go with the 2.x version then. In that case, I won't have to install it? it'll just be there?
I'm not at home so I can't try any of it out yet. Just trying to learn as much as i can first

ROM Manager should be able to pull the image from the Internet. CM7, even without Google Apps, should automagically connect your phone and its number and its data plane to T-Mobile's network.

No. 3.0.0.6 is a unique, one-off version that supports both ext3 and ext4 file systems, and deals correctly with both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs.
If you were on 3.0.0.5, and wished to install a Froyo ROM, you would back up first, before flashing a 2.x Recovery. Think about it.

Help with Rom

*Evil 4G-G2 v.2 rom
Im having trouble flashing this rom....
Backed up
Deleted portion.
Installed from SD
Then Reboot system
Then it gets stuck on MT4G boot screen.
I my mytouch is updated to the latest update through Tmobile(I dont know if this is the problem)
Its rooted 100% with S-off.
Please help out OH and Clockwork is V.3xx

There's your problem.
ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread-based (Android 2.3) ROMs. Evil 4G is a Froyo-based (Android 2.2) ROM. These different versions of Android use incompatible filesystems.
How to recover:
1. Download CyanogenMod 7, a Gingerbread-based ROM, to your PC. Choose the newest release candidate (RC2) or the most recently Nightly build.
2. Boot into CWM Recovery, select "mounts and storage" and make your SD card mountable via USB.
3. Copy the CM7 .zip file to your SD card.
4. Install the .zip after a full wipe / factory reset
5. If you want to stay with CM7, also download the Google Applications (Gapps) .zip to your PC, copy to your SD card and and install it after you complete the install of CM7.
6. Boot CM7.
7. If you want to install Evil 4G, run Rom Manager and have it flash CWM Recovery 2.5.1.2, then reboot into Recovery, full wipe / factory reset, and install Evil as previously planned.

Your backup was made with an incompatible version of CWM Recovery. It may not be usable. That said, some people have reported in the some of the many many threads on this subject that they have been able to restore a Froyo backup made with V3, while running V2. Your results might match theirs. The steps I show above let you stop at CM7 or continue on to Evil 4G, and do not include restoring your Stock ROM.

this gets you running with the 2 versions of recovery, one for froyo, one for gingerbread. whichever backup you want to restore, just use the matching recovery so your old backup is fine

I neglected to mention CWMR 3.0.0.6, that camrs73 just posted about, with a link to its main thread. This is a custom version of CWM Recovery built by option94 that supports both Froyo and Gingerbread filesystems. In order to install it, you need to have a functioning Android system first. You can install it =after= you get CM7 or Evil 4G up and running.

From here if you install 3.0.0.6 Clockwork recovery image (link in my signature) you can flash between 2.2 and 2.3 ROMS w/o any problems.

you can have as many as storage space allows and flash whichever one you feel like at the time (with the appropriate recovery of course)

[Q] Problem with CM RC1

I rooted my phone today, then installed Rom Manager. Using Rom Manager I tried to install Cyanogen Mod 7 RC 1. It seemed to install fine, but when it starts up it goes to the Cyanogen Mod 7 splash screen and loads for a few seconds, then restarts(not the phone, it just replays the splash screen). I backed up my previous Rom, but I don't know how to restore it. Can someone help me get CM7 working or tell me how to restore my previous rom.
EDIT: I got the standard rom recovered, so I don't really have to worry about that part anymore? But how could I get CM 7 to work if I wanted to re flash it?

Do a nandroid backup through ROM manager first off if you haven't already.
Did you do a full data/cache/dalvik cache wipe before you flashed CM7RC1?
Did you flash Gapps at the same time as the ROM?
btw the RC2 has been out for a while.

Er...no. How do I do wipe the cache data? Also, I don't even know what Gapps is. I'm quite ignorant on the subject of roms.

It really is good to do this through recovery, although if you're not comfortable with general use of recovery, I think if you flash the CM7 zip through ROM manager you can check the box for "wipe data + cache".
Gapps is "Google Apps" aka market etc. etc.. These aren't included in the ROM, and I bet you'd like to have them . The link for the latest Gapps is in the CM7 ROM thread in the dev section. Haven't used ROM manager to flash in a long time (I do it through recovery manually) but I think you can check the box to install Gapps at the same time too if you don't wanna do it manually.

And data. it is extremely paramount (imho) that you wipe all of your data/cache/dalvik before flashing to ensure you get a good quality install.
Also, make sure you have the latest CWM recovery installed via ROM manager (assuming that you do already). Its 3.0.0.5 .
Like I said ROM manager can do this, but for nightlies/RC I just do it through recovery and make sure it gets done right.

I got a message today saying a new PA is out and grabbed the zip from goo manager.
Now I understand with goo manager you need a openscript recovery to use that to update though it appears CWM recovery doesn't use that but TWP does.
In CM10 you go to the settings and update from the OTA section in the about tab.
PA doesn't use those OTA updates it seems when CM does.
I would still be using CM but was getting a lot of crashes on M3 so I decided to try a few roms and currently running PA.
So what's the best way to update can I just flash the rom over the top of the current system without formatting first?

Move the zip containing the update to /sdcard (your root documents directory, where all your files are stored- ANdroid, Data, DCIM, Downloads, etc), reboot to CWM, flash zip, select zip and go. That should be all you have to do. :good:

It worked fine for me using CWM and the usual method to update (recovery->install zip->select from SD). The only problem I'm having is a DPI issue in the launcher. Make sure to install the newest gapps as well and clear the cache.

[Q] What's the correct way to use CyanogenMod update?

I've been running the 10-20130303-Nightly-encore for a while now with no problems. Yesterday I decided to try to use the CyanogenMod update to upgrade to 10.1.2. Did both Ti and CWM backups, then went ahead with the 10.1.2 update. This mostly worked, but several things broke right off the bat.
First, some of my apps either got erased or uninstalled. The icons were there, but tapping on them would bring up a message saying the app was not installed.
Second, as my Nook booted up, it reported several apps have stopped. (Such as gmail, Trillian, etc.) Worse yet, some of my apps wouldn't even run. (RomManager for one!) I attempted to restore some of those apps via Ti. Some of them restored but still didn't run. On a few of them, Ti just got stuck on the "Restoring..." popup.
Third, although my WiFi was connected and apparently working for some apps, other apps reported no network connection. (Namely the Play store!) I did notice that the WiFi icon at the top was always gray, not the normal blue.
After fiddling with it for several hours, I managed to get RomManager back up and reverted back to my previous backup.
So my questions are:
1. What is the correct way to update/upgrade using CyanogenMod's updater?
2. Should I have updated to 10.1.0 first, then 10.1.1, then 10.1.2?

You need to factory reset/clear data (probably need to wipe/format system as well) and install the correct gapps for 10.1 (20130301)

If you have a "CWM based recovery" on internal memory, you should be able to download and install the CWM 10.1.2 using cmupdater. But you may have to manually install the right version of gapps the first time. After that just use the updater. No need to wipe anything if just updating CM10.1 to another CM10.1.
Obviously something when wrong last time and that is why dizzy recommended wiping. Usually that is not necessary.

Personally I have found the TWRP recovery to work more reliably than CWM. At some point I was having similar issues with the first updates after fresh-flashing my first CM10 nightly, and after switching to TWRP there has been no problems so far. As a bonus, ROMs which use GooManager for updates would also be able to install updates from GooManager automatically. If you only plan to use CM, what leapinlear says should work, too.

Requesting further clarification ; I wish to use cmupdate to latest stable version for my Nook. Regardless of which flavor recovery I use, should I, first flash the appropriate gapps, then run the updater?
This seems to be the logical order if there is a chance that the recovery might get hosed during the update process. But will it work?

The CM Updater should work regardless whether gapps are installed or not — the updater does not need gapps to work.
The first time you install CM, the usual thing is to flash both CM and gapps (some people may decide to not use the Google stuff, so they choose to not flash gapps, but in general almost everybody would/should flash them). If gapps are installed, the CM updater will then preserve the gapps when doing an update, so it is not needed to flash gapps with each update.
