A few questions from a newb... - Droid X General

Hey guys, just a few questions for you:
1) Using titanium backup, do you guys erase your backups after installing a new ROM, and then create a new backup based on the files you've decided to keep using that ROM?
2) After installing a new ROM, if I wanted to switch ROMs, would I want to create a new backup using the bootstrap recovery each time in between ROMs? How does that work?
3) If i wanted to install a newly released ROM, but have an older version of the same ROM already installed (rubiX Focused in this case), would I have to install the new version like its a entirely new rom?
4) After I flash a new ROM, I need to reinstall themes over the ROM again, correct? Are themes compatible with any ROM or is that on a case by case basis?
5) I feel like all of this installing ROMs over other roms would just make the phone slower without completely formatting the phone. I know when installing the ROMs you are supposed to clear data and cache, but I feel after a while you would need to reformat the phone altogether.
Ok so I lied, there are five...don't feel like you need to answer all of them...thanks in advance guys

[Q] Noob trying to add fixes, ? about adding CWM after a DFT flash

I installed a DFT rom, but would like to apply a couple fixes, ie: camera and mms fix. I did not install CWM on my phone as I used a DFT flash. My question is this, can I install CWM now or is there another way to apply the fixes I need?

There's always a way. You can rip open the zip files, and manually ADB push the files to their respective locations. It's a little tricky, and can cause a mess of things, so it's usually better to flash via CWM.
There's no way to flash CWM and save all your data as you don't have the back-up feature of CWM. The closest you can get would be to install a back-up software on your phone (MyBackup/Titanium Backup) and back up everything, and restore it after you've installed your CWM build.
For my 2p, it'll be better in the long run to install CWM as most releases/fixes from now on will be in that format. Also, you get the added benefit of being able to back-up ROM and test other ROMs without having to start from fresh when you don't like it. Also, you can often transfer your settings between builds with CWM backup/restore feature (not always, but many times).
That's basically what I figured, so I'll need to add CWM and do a new ROM is how I understand it.

Pretty much, but I would strongly suggest a backup using Titanium or MyBackup.

[Q] Do I have to format stuff before installing cm7 (update- solved, thanks!)

I am currently using the stock rom on my rooted g2, and I want to get cm7. I got rom manager premium, and downloaded cm7. At this point one of my friends told me that I should boot into clockwork recovery, format every option except the sd card, and then I should install the rom from the zip on the sd card, using clockwork recovery. He said that this would remove all the old system files so that the new rom would install cleanly, and that if I dont do this I might have problems running the new rom. I thought that rom manager does this for you automatically, as long as you use the option "clear data and cache" before you install the new rom. According to my friend, that option in rom manager (to clear the data and cache before installing the new rom) doesn't remove all the necessary things. Is this true, or does rom manager take care of all of this for you?
This is my first time installing a new rom, so I wanna make sure I do it right.
I really appreciate the XDA forums in general, so I want to thank everyone for making XDA my go to place for anything having to do with my phone!

your friend has the right idea. one thing I would add (prior to formatting anything) is making a nandroid backup of your stock setup.
also, don't rely on rom manager to perform any CWM recovery functions properly. anything that will be done via recovery (ie flashing a rom, making a backup, etc) should be done straight through recovery and not through rom manager. ymmv there, but better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for the quick and detailed post. I already made a nandroid backup, and saved it on both my laptop and my phone, but I forgot to mention it in the post. I will go ahead and flash the rom diretly from clockwork recovery. Thanks a lot for the advice!

Oh no...
I installed cm7, and it looks good, but it looks like I don't have the android market anymore! What should I do?
You have to flash the Gapps to get the market etc.. download from the link and flash through recovery.

[Q] Upgrading Typhoon CM7

Hello Everyone,
This is my first post. I'm a noob here. I have a question about upgrading the ROM installed on my phone.
I have an HD2 and I've successfully installed the CLK version of the Typhoon ROM through CWM.
I would like to know what the easiest method is to upgrade to a newer version of the same ROM.
I know this question must have been asked before and I've tried searching. After 3 days of searching, I think that I should backup the ROM using CWM in case something goes wrong. After that, I think I can use Titanium backup to back up the apps. Is this right? Can I just upgrade over my installation and expect things to be ok?
Also, I've spent quite a bit of time making my background just right in terms of widgets and positions of shortcuts. Do I need to re-do this, or is this preserved when I upgrade the ROM. I'm planning on upgrading through the ROM Manager app.
Finally, are my email settings preserved in the email app, contacts preserved, and ringtone settings preserved when I upgrade?
Thank you so much for your help and patience. I really tried searching, but I just couldn't find the clear answers. If there is a clear thread about this, I would appreciate you pointing me to the right direction. Thanks.
When you make a backup with cwm, there is no need to backup your apps with titanium.
To update a rom you can just take the new cwm rom zip file and install it over your existing rom.
all apps, settings and also widgets should be untouched after updating.
if the system or some apps behave crazy, run fix permissions in rom manager or cwm.
Happy flashing

That's really good to know that I can just overwrite it with the downloaded ROM in zip. I tried yphooN_CM7_v3.5.4-MAGLDR.zip and I want to upgrade when new versions come out of TyphooN.
What's the difference between MAGLDR and CLK?

I find that in about 50% of updates, when I just run the flash over the existing one (I use typhoon) it hangs during booting, in which case back into cwm, factory reset, restart and let the phone boot to the welcome setup page, back into cwm, backups/restore, advanced restore and restore the data and sd-ext partitions, and reboot.

[Q] Quick update question ?

Hi Guys,
Im looking to update my dads phone today and just have a quick question (it been a while since i did it and am a bit rusty)
Basically he currently has MIUI-STABLE V5 by langthang android 2.37 installed (i know i used Magldr for this but arnt sure of the exact process)
I basically just want to update to the last gingerbread Miui Rom (so i can just keep all his data as it is, not fussed about JB or ICS) i beleive this is 2.4.20
If i were to just drop this into the root of the sd card could i just use CWM to install this ROM without the need to do a system wipe? and just do Dalvik and Cache? Im hoping this will then put the phone on a stable build (it was having bluetooth issues)
Also once that is done can i add a EXT3 partition on the sd card(something i forgot last time!! and it now says no storage)
Thank for any help, just to sum up haha, i just want to update the rom to solve the BT issue, and add a EXT 3 (i found some instructions fo this) so it has more 'system memory' thanks for any help guys.
If it's the same ROM and uses the same /system partition (on occasion they change even if the ROM is the same) then that should be fine. I'd strongly recommend backing up in Titanium backup first at the very least (CWM backups can take a long time) just in case something goes wrong.

Thanks for your repl, im not 100% sure if its technically the same ROM, as the one installed (stil MIUI and GB) was a modded one from here. and the one im looking to install is the 'official' MIUI one (Still GB)n

In that case backup and fresh install, it won't work if it's not the same ROM. If the system partition is the same, wipe in CWM then flash the new ROM. Download and install Titanium Backup on your new ROM and restore your apps.

ROM decision

Hi guys,
I'm looking to install one one of these two ROM's:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9506-develop/truongtan-s6-edge-rom-t3207809
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9506-develop/rom-t3014552
Has anyone tried both ROMs long enough to give a good verdict on functionality, stability, performance and battery life etc.?
If no one has tried both, then I am willing to trial both, however I have never actually switch a ROM on my phones before. I have always found an outstanding ROM and stuck with it. What would be the correct and safest steps to switch between these two ROM's?
Thanks guys!
1. Install the first ROM and have it completely set up as you like it, with all your apps.
2. Make a nandroid backup of that ROM.
3. Install the second ROM and set it up as you like it.
4. Make a nandroid backup of that ROM.
Now you can switch back and forth at will.
Wow! You can tell how long it long it has been since I last got into the modding! I completely forgot about that! Cheers man! When installing each of these ROMs or changing to another nandroid backup would you recommend that I do every possible wipe or just stick with data and cache wipes?
Just the cache wipe. Data will be restored when you restore the nandroid. Of course, there's nothing preventing you from doing all the wipes if you want. Case in point, usually when I flip-flop between Albe95's S6 port and the non-Touchwiz ROMs I'll wipe everything first. I don't have to, but it doesn't hurt either.
