[Q] Unlock slider lag? - Droid 2 General

I've found a handfull of issues with this int he DX stuff but nothing real substantial or conclusive in the d2 forums i've looked at. The only complaint i've had with this phone is the unlock slider is choppy as hell. I remember seeing somewhere that someone modified something in the build.prop to alleviate this however I have been unable to find that thread. I've noticed it on every rom ive run, fission 2.2.2, epic 2.0, 2.5.
What am i missing!?!?!? lol.
Thanks in advance.

Check out the Apex rom thats been ported over from DX. I know exactly what your talkin about with the slider, but the rom has an awesome animation when you unlock and it better than any rom ive run before. Plus, its just a great rom

You're not missing anything, really; it's just an unfortunate but minor characteristic of the D2 slider. I have also run several different ROMs with no change, so it must be inherent to the D2 system itself.

Dammit jim!
I am liking fission a little too much to give it up atm lol.

And, just to see what would happen, I flashed 2 DX roms on my d2 yesterday. Not only did they flash, but they were, ummm, id say 90% functional. The slider on those roms are faster and smoother than any on D2 roms. So they will get better in time. The slider and the haptic feeback on the capacitive buttons are the 2 things I dislike the most about my D2

Widgetlocker
Spend 2 dollars on the widgetlocker app. You will never have another issue with lockscreen sliders

This doesn't eliminate the issue, but it greatly reduces it. The Squidly 2.3.20 ROM with the "hapticless" add-on (i.e. zip file) did the trick for me. I've been using it for months now. I'ved tried other ROMs but keep coming back to this. Links below (or if I can't post them you need to google; they are on droidforums net).
It looks like squidly is up to 2.3.20.1 but I've only tested hapticless (or nohaptic) on 2.3.20.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/squidlymandingo/95156-hapticless-d2-regular-bottom-lock-bar.html

I have Fission 2.3 and at first I noticed some slider lag when unlocking until I ran the overclocking 1200 mhz @ 58v script in the rom manager and sure enough the lag went away. I'd suggest doing this if you wanted to keep the Fission rom.
EDIT: Nevermind sorry saw that you were OC'ed already in your sig haha, my bad. Just thought it may help.

Is it worth going from stock to MoDaCo?

Hello-
First off, please excuse my n00bness - I'm from the world of Windows Mobile hacking, and this Android stuff is really confusing me.
I've been tolerating stock for a while, but the slowness is really getting to me - today I clocked my Hero at 12 seconds to wake up from standby, which is just unacceptable. I'd like to know if there are any significant speed benefits to going from stock to the latest MoDaCo rom? Are there any downsides? I read the post over at modaco.com, but couldn't see any "known issues".
Thanks for any input,
TM
Take the plunge.
I went from stock to Fresh and overlayed Modaco. My uptime shot to 90%, 80% and stuck at 70%.
I reflashed to Stock then back to Modaco. I am now at around 15% uptime. I removed the bloatware from Sprint and LOVE the speed of this phone now. Its what I expected when I bought it.
I have no doubt that you'll see a speed increase with Modaco. Especially if you remove the sprint apps once you load Modaco.
Thanks for all the replies. One more question though, are there any big known issues with the latest MoDaCo? I thought I read something about BT not working, or something to that extent.
it's worth it to switch to any custom rom. bluetooth is just something thats messed up with our 1.5 builds.

you will notice a big difference switching to modaco 2.2... and im not experiencing any BT issues at all... matter or fact, im not experiencing ANY issues with anything using this rom...
Heck, anything is better than stock.
especially since we have a custom kernel now its definitely worth it to go to any custom rom, especially modaco 2.2
Im using fresh. I used the kitchen to root my phone and installed 1.1. No problems so far except that the voice recorder app keep crashing for some reason. I did an upgrade without wiping though so that might be my problem.
Its a lot faster and the tether app is awesome!
Ok, so far so good. Got everything flashed, but how do I get rid of things like Stocks/Sprint TV/NFL/etc? Just follow the generic guide (for any rooted Hero) I saw?
I ran stok for about 6 hours and decided that I didnt pay that much money for a smart phone that was that slow.
I flashed Fresh 1.0 to start and I have tried just about all the roms that are out there. Including modaco 2.2 and it may just be that I started with fresh but I always seem to go back to it over the rest, and add onto that the modaco kernel with compcache and then doing the config tweak found here my phone just flies now.
I now have it set to where I feel a phone at this price point should be to start.
edit: to remove the apps follow the instructions found here

Use the Fresh Kitchen to pull any you don't want.
You know what? I've flashed MoDaCo's ROM before, but it was just too much like stock (except for the obvious speed increases). I flashed Fresh 1.1, and loved it because it had the speed of MoDaCo's, plus the Espresso UI. Then I recently flashed Gumbo Kernel to my phone, and omgwtfzorz my phone is RIDICULOUSLY fast. Not noticeably, but RIDICULOUSLY. I can't believe you've been living with stock for this long >.< Custom ROM's and kernels are necessary for this phone haha.

A little help for an Incredible user

Hey guys. I'm an Incredible user, but my girlfriend has an Eris. I'm tired of hearing her ***** about the speed of the phone, and how it occasionally locks up on her, so (now that the easy root method for leakers is out) I'm about to root her phone and install a custom ROM (hopefully).
Now, I have a few questions for you folks since I'm not familiar with the Eris community at all (and I have some time constraints since she needs her phone back).
1. I'm looking for a ROM recommendation. What I'm looking for is something extremely stable and fast. I don't need any bells/whistles. She doesn't use tethering, at all but it must have GPS/Camera/Bluetooth/MMS working. Don't really care if it has Sense, but if there is something fast/stable WITH sense, that would not be a bad thing. Most important things are speed and bug-free (or damn close). Froyo would be nice (obviously).
2. I am unfamilar with overclocking. I come from a phone where you overclock by installing a hydra kernel, so I don't know how this works on the Eris. It sounds like I will have to manually set up overclocking in SetCPU, and I'm not familiar with the application. If anyone can give me some tips on how to do this, or recommended settings that would be AWESOME. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not my phone, so I won't have time to tinker with trial and error (in other words I won't be able to start testing at 850mhz and work my way down until it's stable).
I know this is a lot to ask, but I'm hoping some of you guys will be able to help me out given the circumstances. Thanks in advance.

evil eris is fast stable and sense built. has some bells and whistles but smooth. and there are other very stable fast sense roms , i just prefer an AOSP vanilla rom instead.
setCPU is just a set of slide bars for the most part that control highest and lowest settings in mhz, 768 being highest stable average setting, 806 being highest reported (very few)
Thanks for the info. do I need to install a custom kernel to go along with evileris or is that all I need to flash?
I wouldn't suggest Evil Eris since 4.0 is coming out but if you can wait until then you can try to. I might suggest XTRom, it seems to be stable without any features missing.
Actually some phones can get to 825mhz but that's very rare I've only seen that in two cases, I suggest trying 768, it's the most stable speed for the general eris user (some unlucky folks can't get passed 710mhz.)
Basically download setcpu, put it on the phone, click "autodetect" and you've got your speeds. I suggest setting a heat profile to around 42 degrees at your highest priority.
I also suggest not going under 160mhz, the phone freezes up at 19mhz.
For screen off/ standby you can do 160-480mhz
For regular under 100% battery I suggest 748mhz max and 245mhz min.
No kernels necessary, just use "autodetect"
Ok. One more question. I've got the android SDK installed from when I rooted my incredible. Can you point me toward a guide that will explain how to get ADB access on the Eris?
Edit: One thing I forgot to mention. This IS a phone with a leaked 2.1 OTA installed.
Nevermind. Got it
K, if you've got any other questions I'd be happy to answer.
I have done the exact same thing you are doing, and EE was where I wound up too. Here are my thoughts however.
EE does FC a bit more than stock, its fast though. If you need to do it now,I would consider the Xtr Sense rom as a start, then hell, let me know if its worth switching to.
If you have a little time to wait, I would do EE4. The negative aspect of doing this for a girlfriend, or wife, is they don't tend to have the patience we have with bugs. To them it is not some dev busting his ass to help make their phone better... its "oh crap he is going to 'fix it' again". And sadly no matter how good you are at fixing things, that one mistake you made back in 1997 will haunt you for life!

Exactly why I needed something super stable. Hopefully EE does the trick because I'm done flashing it
I'm setting up OC right now. Hopefully this will be nice and stable.
I've only got a half hour to finish lol.
She's pretty good about me hacking her phone, though, so I'm sure flashing EE4 won't be a problem. I just want to wait until it's got all the kinks worked out.

Just a suggestion for your SetCPU settings. You shouldnt have such a big jump i.e. 245-748 because it causes lag alot of times from the major change in cpu jumping. Try 768 - 528 then screen off 378-248. Since changing mine to something similiar to his it runs smoother coming out of sleep. Stock when I got a text message it would vibrate then three seconds later make the notifcation sound. Now since changing setCPU like this it does them the same time. Just a suggestion.....Good Luck Bro....By the way eris lighting bolt it damm good and so is white widow even though some peole dont like the cook of the latter for some reason
Thanks for all the help guys. She's soooo much happier with her phone now. The difference in response time is huge.
Now, I do have one last question/request. Can you guys recommend some themes that work with EvilEris 3.0?
I'd prefer ones that can be pushed through recovery rather than have to use Metamorph, if possible.
Edit: Sorry. One more. A keyboard with a voice to text button while in both landscape and portrait.
yeah white widow definitely probably one of the more impressive roms for speed ,stability and battery life. .

if you use a cynagon mod rom then I have found a theme called enoch that I love and its flashable. It is a black theme but looks really good.
As for the keyboard there is an XDA HTC IME keyboard with voice to text on here somewhere just search........
Congrats on getting everything running.

New to droid X and Wanna root....HELP!

I have had probably 8-12 Android handsets. I recently switched to an iPhone from my EVO and I hated my iPhone. I wanted to go with something pretty similar to my EVO so I checked out the screen, specs, user reviews, etc. The Droid X sounded great, but since having it, it locks up, freezes, and Lags like a G1. This NOTHING like my EVO and is disappointing to say the least.
I'm really hoping that a custom ROM can speed up the interface and possibly help with the battery life. Any recommendations? I don't want to theme, or skin...no interest in changing the bootlogo, etc... I just want a nice and FAST phone.
I use a lot of apps...I DON'T let any apps refresh automatically though. I also use Launcher Pro. Thanks in advance.
(Please don't tell me to read the sticky. I have. I need some real life experienced reviews....maybe people who have had an EVO or who understand what I want. Thanks)

LMFAO, i wrote the sticky, which has instructions on how to root and while I havent had the time to update everything I did cover some ROMs which include what you have asked for, so not quite sure what else you could be looking for.... But if you really want an explanation:
Root the phone using z4root and then try out a ROM like Rubix Focused 2.0.1. Drod2169 built the ROM and I am currently using it. The interface is very quick and responsive. He has added in multiple governor settings for overclock which include a conservative governor to allow for better battery life. You can use apps like Droid Overclock (jrummy16) and setCPU to change these governor settings as well. Rubix does very well when overclocked if that is something you are interested in.
If you are looking for a ROM that still has some Blur components in it, then try out Apex 1.4.1 or Rubix 2.0 Blurry. Both are very responsive and have some of the blur that certain people out there are looking for. Last but not least, it seems a great majority of people like Liberty 1.5. I used the ROM for quite some time, and it is very responsive, but a lot of people seem to have issues with lag or reboots. I never had this issue, so I can't quite speak to that issue...
ROM's are really more of a matter of personal choice. Try out a few and see what you like.
As far as a comparison to the EVO... my roommate has one, and 2 of my other best friends have one. I have done MULTIPLE benchmarking tools on their phones to compare against my X (on multiple ROMs). None of their tests have beat mine... In my opinion, the only differences between the EVO and the X is this:
1) Evo has unlocked Bootloader to allow custom kernels so you can run ROMS like CynanogenMod (but given time, CVPCS is compiling CM for the X)
2) Evo has front facing camera for those who can't wait to talk to people via a webcam.
3) Evo has a slightly quicker GPU (graphics processing unit) than the X, but winds up limited to 30FPS for the most part. Some of the benchmarks I have seen on the X jump it up to 62FPS on tests I have run.
4) Evo runs sense from HTC. If you want a "Sense" feel... some have made themes that look just like Sense....but you said you don't want a theme.
That's about it...

The sticky is EPIC...honestly, it's just data and info. I guess I am looking more for opinions. Thank you for the insight.
I had an EVO and that thing had not once, ever, locked up or froze. 2nd day on my Droid X after a hard reset and it is SO laggy.
Unlock screen even lags to get to home. IDK.... I def don't want the "blurware", but the benchmarks on this phone are impressive. It's response and use have not been, in my opinion.
My wife has the Samsung Vibrant and the specs are amazing for that phone too, but NEVER have I seen a phone lock up and freeze so much. She gave her old G1 to my mom and it's like they run at about the same speed.
I'm real tech savy, a huge phone nerd, etc....I just really didn't like my iPhone. I use Apple products for everything else as I am an audio engineer by profession, but the iPhone was SO limited. I had to hack the crap out of it to get basic things that are available on freebie candybar phones.
One thing I have noticed is that it seems to build my photo cache REALLY slow. Now... I have 14 GBs of photo/video on their, but everytime I open a gallery it takes forever to load. It is getting better about this, slowly but surely....do you think my unit is defective, I am expecting too much, or the more I play with it and let it buld a good cache, etc, it will run better?
Thanks for responding, and THANK YOU for the sticky... If I decide to root that thing will be a lifesaver!

I think the type of sdcard you have also makes a difference. If you have a new class 6 card instead of what the phone comes with (I think it is like class 2 or 3) then the read/write speed should be a lot better. I have been using the latest Rubix ROM for about 2 weeks now, and I don't experience any lag or reboots/freezing. I really like this ROM, and actually talk to Drod2169 (the developer) a decent amount. I would take a look at Rubix or Fission 2.5.7 as these are both blur-free ROM's.
I am also a huge tech nerd/geek. I have tweaked the crap out of my X. I have probably tried every ROM/theme there is for this thing, and right now I'm sitting solid on Rubix. I also used Darkslide 4.2 Blurless for a while. It is a ROM built by BBCrackman and some others over at mydroidworld. I would suggest trying Darkslide out. It is pre-themed by the makers of the ROM but I think it has been the most reliable and snappy ROM I have used besides Rubix 2.0.
If you have questions, shoot them at me in here, or hit me up on gchat.

ROMs... bugs... where to go from here?

Is there any true bugless/very minimally bugged ROM out there? Tried CM6, CM6, Evervolv, and some others. I'm talking something that can be fully fixed if there are bugs in it, or is there a ROM that will basically be a stock evo with the sprint garbage removed from it, i was wondering maybe I could stick a savagedzen kernel on it and get some better speed from it as well with bettery battery life. I know there is a fresh evo but I don't think that this ROM gets rid of the junkware sprint puts on? Since quadrant scores and the like are mostly useless I'm beginning to even wonder, are you "truly" getting any more speed out of a custom ROM over stock without getting bugs?
Right now I'm on CM7, everything is wonderful, of course except for the bugs. The random 3g -> 1x for no reason, making the internet not even usable. The random mini-lockups/terrible lag that I can get, etc are all just too annoying to deal with when they pop up. It's irritating when I go to my friends and say "here check this out, this thing has more battery life and as fast a he-...oh well actually my internet on it is bugging out right now and the lockscreen I have to really quick reboot for etc etc." What's the point of speed if these sort of things happen, you know? All of the flashiness of gingerbread is starting to urk me with all the bugs it brings, I haven't tried a froyo mod except for myns, I don't remember what kind of bugs I had in that, if any. What's the best way to go from here? Maybe give CM6 a try again and put SZen kernel on it?(I only ever tried it with stock) Thanks for any opinions/sorry for the mini text wall.
Newsflash: CM7 is buggy, and has always been buggy, hence the ever updated releases.
If you want a ROM that's as close to 100% stable as you can find, try the bigger Sense ROM's....
Are there any very stable AOSP ROMs? Especially gingerbread? Or do these only truly become stable when the real releases are out for the phones? Because If that's not the case, why not just run stock, you know? What's the real benefit? The only reason I rooted in the very beginning was to get rid of the junk Sprint has attached in the beginning. I don't mind sense. However ever since I've rooted I've been on a speed/battery hunt thinking I could get something majorly different. Is it even worth it? What is CM6 like with savagedzen for instance? Because that's what I'm thinking of trying next. Or are all AOSP going to have pretty hefty bugs with them one way or another due to the nature of them?
So far the new ports of the Shift roms are solid as a rock. Misfits for stock. Kings for some ultra themed ones and Zone23 for blue.
Give them a try you won't regret disappointed.
Try Misfits Speedy Port. Pretty stable with Sense 2.1. I'm making a rom based on that one that is stripped down, but not allowed to post dev forums yet

What are you gaining over a stock evo, though. Compared to this?
Years ago the phones were slow and bloated. You could install custom ROMs and actually notice an increase in speed.
With the phones coming out now they are already fast and if you root to look for a speed increase you might not notice much. You will notice all the bloatware gone though.
For a stable ROM I would look for a 2.2 Calk ROM or ones like that. They may not have been updated in awhile but that's because there isn't much to add or change. Everything works.
What about myns?
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
See I don't understand why the call them "release [clients?]", and then release a "full version", even when the full version is still buggy with devices. I stayed away from CM7 for that exact reason until they finally got the full version up. Once I stuck it on i was enjoying it so much but the bugs are just too annoying to deal with anymore. Can't even show off with it because of them popping up at the dumbest times and then it's like yeah so much for that awesome phone hack. I might go try myn's again or CM6, not sure. I just want the stock apps gone, and I want a stable environment. Speed is nice too. Being unique is nice, when it doesn't have huge drawbacks.

The more and more I think about it I don't remember having too many issues with myn's, so I may try that out again. Not sure. Is there any way to get that gingerbread lock off/on animation? That is something I'm really after, along with the gingerbread keyboard too.
On the sense side, I've found Koni's elite series III to be flawless...I'm currently running ava's ginger sense and haven't had any real issues with it either... can't go wrong with either of those.. just my two cents..

No smart phone to date is bug free. Cm7 stable is best in my opinion and that 3g/1x bug you speak of isn't a bug but cm7 actually giving you the accurate data speed in the area you are in.
What recovery are u using amon 2.3 wipes fix most issue.when flashing like crazy I haven't had any issues with the roms . Sense or cm7 work fine. Try Elite 3 , Kings out of this world. Um to many to list. Always do a full wipe when flashing new roms.

I know there isn't a "bug free" ROM or phone. But in terms of crippling bugs, CM7 at the moment for me is horrifying when I'm trying to show it to others especially.
As for the 3g/1x bug it is very real, and it's the worst. I get 1x for no reason inside my house and outside on occasion, it will then switch back to 3g if I restart the phone, or wait [sometimes an absurdly long time] until it fixes itself. I've not had that issue with any other ROMs, stock evo, gingerbread ROMs, or anything of the like. I've reflashed completely fresh with and without the GPS fix, with savagedzen and stock - no difference. Maybe it's just my phone, regardless though, there are so many people asking for help on different areas of CM7 it makes me not want to bother because it is not a truly stable rom for Evo for a lot of people. The battery charger bug I can deal with, mine lags to high hell when it's on the charger - that's something I can fix within an instant and not have it bother me. As for the 3g/1x, the random app mini freezes, the lockscreen not wanting to come on sometimes unless I hold down the button much longer until I restart, and other things of the sort, i cannot. It's not worth the flashy menus, and really the battery life is nothing near a froyo ROM, not even close. (I don't expect it to be).

I use amon 2.3 as well, and I always full wipe after storing a backup on my comp (complete full wipe)
I played with my friend's stock unrooted evo yesterday and no joke, the thing randomly rebooted in my hands while doing nothing special at all.
With that said, any rom here is more stable than stock, but try SavageMod 1.2.1, most stable 2.3.3 I've tried.
I have to endorse Koni's. I ran it for over a month, until I flashed Giger today to pay with 'til Koni releases v.IV
It's not overly themed, perfectly smooth and everything I needed to work did fine, and not one FC the entire time I ran it.
The setup in my sig is how I had it set up. The only difference now, of course, is the ROM
I like sinister for stability, its V4 now and I can't think of a single issue with it.

I always like ava's ROMs for fast and stable - Z4 isn't quite their yet, but give Z3 a shot.
No GB on/off animation mod as of yet, but you can add the GB keyboard to any ROM. There a quite a few diff ones from the themes and apps forum.
Gotta jump in here for some input...
If you just strictly want Sense, I was always a Myn Warm Two Point Two guy.
If you can't live without the screen off animation, Deck's Gingerbread is by far the way to go. Yes, it is built from CM7 to an extent but Deck really does a great job taking care of problems. There is a stable 1.0 and beta 1.2(x). Everyone likes CM7 because its popular and known, but honestly after using CM7 for awhile and then jumping to Deck's rom I will never look back.
If you want to remove the bloat from a stock sprint rom don't forget that you can always just do it by removing the apk's from your system with root explorer or through ADB.
How to through ADB:
--adb remount
--adb shell
-- cd /system/app
--ls
-- Once all the apps show up, you just type: rm <insert the apk name here.apk>
--reboot your phone and BAMMMMM!

For those looking for a stock GB, like we had stock Froyo on Fission.

I suggest checking out Apex. The search function is down for this forum, but I check this site pretty regularly and I don't recall any significant notice about this rom. No, I'm not the dev, no I'm not claiming to be. I just wanted to share a link to the rom for those that are frustrated with not having GB because they don't want blur, semi-blur, or don't like other GB Roms. Give Apex 2.0 a try. It's a completely vanilla GB, and this guy has done his homework on it. If you want something stock like Froyo Fission was, but for GB, check it out.

Wow
Installed the Apex rom today and it's really very nice. I like the spartan interface and the fact that you can just add on what features you use.. No issues at all so far after about 8 hrs use. And I still have 70% battery after playing with my droid 2 all afternoon. Phone is super-fast and still have root and Netflix!
I did download the stock boot animation and reinstalled. The Apex boot animation was a little too obtrusive for me.. Some may like it though.
Glad to see someone getting some mileage out of it. I've yet to get the wireless tether for root users to work, but apparently that's a common thing with GB. TBH seems to have a patch for it, but I've yet to track it down.
Cyanogenmod 7
Try cyanogenmod 7. You have to be on froyo to flash it and the rom doesn't has the blur framework and is a true AOSP rom.
