I was trying to test geeknik's StupidFast kernel with JT's Super Clean applied, and I didn't wipe the data. Now when I start up I get force closes on ton's of stuff and I can't even get to ROM Manager. When I try to boot into recovery it does go into CWM it goes into regular recovery.
How do I boot into CWM recovery and recover my backed up root?
android.process.media and .acore keep fcing. I can't even get into my homescreen.
in reg recovery highlight "apply update.zip" and hit home button. In cwm the back button will be select.
good day.
It recovered to the same force closing. I'm trying a different backup. *crosses fingers*
I've tried another backup, same thing. What is happening? D:
I've tried every backup now. Still getting multiple fc's. Did I royally **** up my phone?
Did you flash geeks over voodoo?
good day.
Yes, I did.
You my friend are still up ext4 **** creek. And you need to go HERE and at the bottom of the first post choose the uninstaller matching the version that you are running. Have fun and good luck.

3. turn off phone, take battery out, press volume down while plugging into usb on your pc.
4. make sure odin reads your phone (you'll see yellow box on the left). click pit and open pit file. click pda and open system file. click start. do not disconnect until you see green box saying "passed".
5. flash rest of other files in a same way. make sure you put pit file every time.
6. put the battery back in and turn on your phone. this will take you to blue stock recovery screen. choose the menu option "wipe data and factory reset". this will recover your phone.
The above steps would not have helped him with voodoo. They might have made it worse if he took that route. But his problem is solved anyway.

Hello all.
the other day i installed [ROM] VIPERrom v1.0.2. The install went great, just as any other ROM install I've done in the past. Today i wanted to try my luck with quantum but ran into a road block.
every time i boot into manual recovery mode to run the update.zip to access clockwork i get a very weird error i cant seem to figure out. Google really hasn't
been much help either.
When i hit update.zip i get:
E:can't mount sdcard/dev/block/vold/179:1 (no such file on directory)
Then another error saying the E:/update.zip is invalid or something along those lines.
I want to say this might have something to do with file structure change in viperrom maybe? Recovery is still 2e and i always boot to manual.... The phone and ROM still functions fine, i just want to try quantum or go back to baked snacks or another 2.1 variant for battery life....
I have reformatted my sd after backing up to my pc... no dice
Is a possible remedy to try and flash back to stock di18? Or could that cause issues...? what about odin?
for anyone else who happens upon this problem, just flash back to a stock release with odin.
Fixed me right up!
Thanks for the tools devs!
While you can go the Odin route, a simpler method would be to go to CWM recovery, factory reset at least 3x, clear cache at least 3x, and instead of selecting "update.zip" choose "install zip from sd card" then navigate to the ROM you want. Since you are changing ROM's all together it is not an update.

i had the same exact problem couple days ago.. and fix it the same way as you hahaha.
One thing i dont understand though guys, yall said we can just install from zip where i do not see that option straight up.
All you see is reboot, apply sdcard update.zip, wipe data and wipe cache. How did yall directly go to install from zip? am i missing something?
Thanks!
I think everyone here is talking about the update.zip from the normal recovery.
For me i always have to hit apply update.zip in normal recovery to get to clockwork unless i use rom manager.
Sounds like you guys are talking about the stock recovery, not clockwork. To be clear, clockwork recovery is loaded by powering on the phone while holding the vol. down and camera buttons at the same time. If you are in the right recovery you will see the option you seek!
Sent from my Epic using XDA App.
thanks all for the replies. i was talking about the stock recovery...
Any time i want into clockwork i do the vol d+camera+power combination.
That take me to manual stock recovery where i load an update.zip to access clockwork....
Stock wouldnt let me load clockwork anymore... Odin fixed it but this raises another question for me....
Do i have clockwork set up correctly? Should the button combo take me straight to clockwork?
Sorry for being a noob guys and thanks for the help!
I'm out and about and can't link it but noobnl posted a redirect fix that let's quickboot and root manager take you straight to clockwork. It bypasses the stock recovery thus no need for the update.zip anymore. I think that's what you need...rom manager is supposed to work with it too I believe.

If you have the current version of cw then the three button boot should take you directly to it. Not sure what the problem is, maybe someone more experienced than me will know.
I am having a problem accessing clockwork mod recovery mode, no matter what process i try it consistently takes me to android recovery instead.
info:
samsung fascinate
rooted
Did odin flash back to stock
Did factory reset back to stock
Did software ota update to the following specs:
HV i500.04
M# sc i500
Firmware 2.1 update 1
Baseband S: 1500.04VD101
Kernel 2.6.29
Build SCH i500 DH101
Installed CWm Recovery from market
Installed Asto file manager from market
Installed Titanium backup from market
Opened CWM application
Went through root permissions dialogue
Flashed CWM recovery to 2.5.1.0
Next i clicked on BACK UP ROM which reboots me into Android Recovery Mode and gives me the standard 4 options for the fascinate:, plus it says installation was aborted:
1.After failing to find update package
2. open update package
3. verify update package
At this point i click on the home button and reboot system now.
Next i try flashing a different CWM Recovery version to 2.5.1.1 , 2.5.1.3 , 2.5.1.4 , all resulting in and error message, so i am still using 2.5.1.0
Next i try toclick on manage and restore backups but there are no backups listed even thouigh i did back up Rom earlier.
next i try to install the Geeknik ROM( Stupidfast v1.23(D101) from the Download ROM section.
I click OK to dialogue box that ask do i want to Down Load Rom
The Stupidfast ROM download starts and finishes
Notification bar says download is complete so i click on notification bar and this takes me to dialogue box which asks do i want to back up existing rom and wipe data and cache . i say yes to both and click OK.
Next dialogue box asks do i want tot reboot. i click Ok
i am then taken back to Android System recovery.
No matter what i do in Clockwork Recovery i always end up back at Anroid System Recovery. i have tried all different scenarios -debugging checked.debugging unchecked, clear cache, dont clear cache, back up rom, dont back up rom, usb connected, usb unconnected, Titanium in,titanium out. watched all different you tube videos on subject.
sorry this was so long. i didnt want to miss any answers to any question any of you might have if at this point you want to offer any help. thanks in advance.
You have to flash CWM with Odin before you can use it. Can't just install from the market or ROM Manager
Kevin, Thanks for your response to my question.
i thought i already flashed CWMRecovery from within ROM Manager. it is the first option at the top of CWMRecovery, also it states under that first choice that my latest recovery id Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.0.
If i scroll down to the bottom of CWMRecovery the last choice shows all of the CWM Recoveries. Recovery 2.5.1.0 is listed at the bottom and is the only one i can flash/install.
In both instances it says that i have flashed this version(2.5.1.0) of CWM Recovery.
I will try whhat you are suggesting and thanks again for the help, it is appreciated
Kevin , I followed your instructions and flashed the CWMrecovery.tar file with Odin3_1.3 and everything is as it should be. The funny thing is (at least to me) that the CWMrecovery version that is listed when i am in recovery mode now is CWM version 2.5.1.0, which is the same version that i flashed within rom manager. Kind of confusing but at least i am where i want to be. Thanks again for the help.
Yeah, it's just one of the quirks with the Fascinate. Unlike most devices, just flashing Clockwork with ROM Manager only puts the update.zip on your SD card. Using Odin to flash the .tar file installs the recovery, so both parts are needed.
where i need to put CWMrecovery.tar in ODIN in which section PDA/PHONE/CSC? 1nx
You only flash things in PDA section, doing otherwise will screw up your phone

Im kinda new to all this stuff and just wanted to get some step by step stuff if you dont mind. I rooted my Fascinate tried clockwork mod wouldnt work when i tried to backup after downloading the recovery thing and when i read this you guys said something about Odin so I went to appbrain and downloaded tuxility but now im lost on what to do. Maybe something step-by-step would be good. Really appreciate it! (ps: I know im kinda slow but if you wouldnt mind...)
The stock recovery does not allow us to run unsigned zips. Thus, we must flash the CWMrecovery.tar to patch recovery to allow us to run these unsigned zips. Then you can flash CWM from within Rom Manager.
Follow these instructions from fallingup's thread:

Thanks ALOT this looks really simple the only thing that idk about is how it said to put it in download mode. Idk what that means. Debugging? and do I mount it? Thats all i think. THANKS agian.
Download mode: power off, pull out battery, with Odin open and USB connected to PC hold volume down and plug in USB.
Okay I have been using theunlockr's site in conjunction with xda and droidforums to learn about rooting and such over the last month. I have been rooted for a week or so now and have been enjoying wireless tether and setcpu, but thats about it. I want to do more, ie a custom rom. So I got DL09 Super Clean 's .zip on my sd card, and went into Rom Manager and Flashed Clockworkmod Recovery, then reboot into recovery. I keep getting stone walled here. It says;
failed to verify whole file signature
signature verification failed
installation aborted
then at the top I have the options to;
reboot system now
apply sd card update.zip
wipe data/ factory reset
wipe cache partition
I tried a factory reset then re installed Rom Manager, seeing as super user was still in my app draw I didn't re root. What am I doing wrong? I know you guys hate people like myself but I'm at a loss.

good day.
another quick question. When selecting update.zip from recovery the screen goes blank and the soft keys light up, how long should I have to wait for something to happen?
If you are in CWM recovery (green text).
Back or power = select (home will black screen but tap home again to turn back on)
Search = Back
To flash a rom/kernel/or theme you will use the "install zip from sdcard' option in CWM.
In stock recovery (blue text)
Home = select.
good day.
Your the man! Thanks!
So, I thought it would be great to finally root and put a ROM on my SGSII. That's when trouble started.
I am not new to ROMs. It's pretty simple, really. Well, tonight, I've managed to make myself crazy and I sit here hours later, starting at a reboot-looping SGSII. Here's what I did:
1. Started with a 2.3.4 base model. No root. No nothing outside of stock.
2. Decided I wanted to install the light'ning ROM. Followed instructions to a "T" and all was well. Neat ROM, but a few hours later, I decided I wanted to try VillianROM. So, I installed Clockwork recovery.
3. Booted into Clockwork recovery. Didn't have the VillianROM image on my SD card yet. Thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and format my phone. Chose "wipe" from the menu. Confirmed. Wiped.
4. Went to install VillianROM. Oops, forgot to place the image on my miciroSD card. Now, I have no OS. Phone in reboot loop.
5. Searched XDA, google, etc, found lots of stuff on reboot loops, including warnings not to start new threads here because the fix is simple. Followed said simple fixes.
6. Downloaded proper factory image from here as per simple "don't panic" instructions here for those with reboot loops. Installed following directions via ODIN. Rebooted, and guess what. Still in a reboot loop.
7. No clue how to fix this, I reflashed the ODIN version of light'ning, the same way I originally started this mess, thinking this would help me.
8. No dice. Still in a violent reboot loop. No amount of flashing seems to do anything. All flashes are successful, but upon restart after flashing, bam, reboot sequence for infinity.
I'm pretty pissed as I have apparently screwed up my SGSII in a matter of minutes.
It's still rebooting constantly and I've tried all obvious "easy" steps. Someone please suggest something outside of what I will find when doing a search...otherwise, It's going back to Amazon for them to deal with.
Thanks.

it's not an issue
Install Villain 1.1
to find this rom, goto the latest villain thread, goto the villain forums, and the ROM is there.
install this ROM via Odin and the phone will boot fine
then install the rooted kernel from chainfires thread matching the KE7 ROM
this will install CWM recovery. then copy the ROM of your choice to the sd card and flash as normal

I'm unable to gain access to the SD card, so how can I do this?
"To follow these instructions we presume you already have access to Clockworkmod recovery, and are able to put the zip file onto the SD card, and flash it."
There is no .tar or .md5 file in the Villain ROM folder for Odin to use.
Flash a "_user_low_ship" ROM. For example, the latest KH1 that you find on Samfirmware is that kind of ROM. Normally, just flashing this type of ROM normally without repartitioning should solve it.
If it doesn't, then you need to use the .pit file in the package and repartition. This will delete all your existing partitions and delete whatever is causing your problem too.
Thanks. So the re partition method involves selecting the PIT command in ODIN and making sure the "repartition" box is checked?

It's not different than normal flashing with Odin, except that this time in addition to pda, modem and csc, you select the pit file too, and then click repartition checkbox on the left. You don't select anything else. Then you click start.
Hovewer, I must warn you. I haven't understood the problem you have, and the solution I'm mentioning (repartitioning) while in theory should work, has the potential to make your situation even worse. Repartitioning is always risky and this is your own risk. Make sure you know what you are doing and you are taking full responsibility if you decide to do it.
I'm going to have to re-partition. No matter what I do or what I flash, it reboots constantly.
So, I have the original firmware from samfirmware .tar file for my model, the I9100UUBKG6 (Brazil model). I have also downloaded the .pit for this phone. When I flash these two files using ODIN, it still doesn't work. Reboot loop.
If I am going to reformat, I will need all these files:
PDA - have
Modem - where to get?
CSC - where to get?
PIT - have
Can someone point me where to find the missing two files above so I can do a total flash re-partition? Or can I re-partition with only the PDA and PIT using ODIN?
Thanks.
EDIT: I just followed the guide here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEjTaFg_2Ks
Used the appropriate PDA file from samfirmware. Also used the correct .pit file from samfirmware. Checked re-partition. Flashed. Still in a reboot loop. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. This is what ODIN looked like while running this process.
I'm out of ideas at this point. Just a continuous reboot.
Here is a video of the rebooting. It will not stop.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRWXirjC8uY
EDIT: Well holy hell. I rebooted into recovery, wiped data and cache and it's now working again.
What a nightmare. That is all.

Hello,
first I'd like to say that since the first day, I really....hate my Galaxy S4, this is probably the phone I hate the most actually. This is why I wanted to get rid of this stupid stock ROM (who the hell wants all this preinstalled on his phone ?!)
I flashed it from the CWM Rom manger with Cyanogen Mod 10.1 and it's been stuck on the CM logo since 3 hours, I tried entering into recovery mode, but it boots on the stock recovery.
Please, help me..
You can fix this. You have to reflash stock firmware again since something clearly went wrong and you cant do anything.
1. Download Odin ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539 )
2. Download the stock ROM image ( http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I337 ) Large File. Unzip the file to get the .tar.md5 file you will need.
3. Download and install Samsung Kies (Installs Drivers)
4. Boot the phone into "Download Mode" (From http://www.ninjaromeo.com/download-mode-samsung-galaxy-s4/ for i9500 but same procedure)
Unplug phone
Switch off your Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 Android Smartphone.
Now press and hold “Volume Down + Power + Home” buttons together for a little bit of time.
After appearing Samsung logo release the buttons.
Then you will move on to Warning page.
Read the warning before going to proceed.
As the given on screen instruction, press Volume Up button to enter into download mode.
The you will see the page with Android logo and “Downloading, Do not turn off target!!”
If you don’t want to move on download mode, just press Volume Down button in the proceed page.
5. Plug Phone into PC. Open Odin. Select "PDA" and point it to the large firmware file that you downloaded that has a .tar.md5 extension.
6. Click "Start". This will reflash the stock recovery and firmware. It will retain your Data partition. Odin will inform you when it's done. Then close Odin.
You now have a functioning phone. Yay!
Backup everything you need to back up from your data partition to your PC or a microSD card.
If you want to Flash CM10.1
first run this,CASUAL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297900
It will install TWRP Recovery. Just like CWM but touch. No difference to me has all same features. It installs easier so I used it. It will also root the device and perform the Loki trick to get it to boot and bypass the locked bootloader. RUN IT and follow the instructions laid on in that post word for word and you will get everything working.
So! Now you have a working recover! Yay!. Boot up into Android.
Download the latest CM10.1 Nightly from here. http://get.cm/?device=jflteatt&type=nightly
Download Latest Google Apps from here http://goo.im/gapps
Copy it to your phone. Preferably a mcroSD card.
Reboot to recovery. Go to Install. Select that CM10.1 file and install it.. (Choosing external SD card if you saved it to a microsd). Repeat for the Google Apps zip file.
When done, wipe Data, Cache, Dalverik Cache from the menu in recovery, sometimes under Advanced.
Reboot.

Try the emergency restore / recovery option in Kies. I have never done it but many people have had to after a bad flash. Not sure how you lost your custom recovery. I had issues with a rom I flashed and for stuck at boot but my recovery was fine so I restored my nandroid.
Try wiping your Data partition. Should fix that. Just hook the device up to a computer and copy your stuff off it first. Stock firmware was restored so any lingering problems would be related to stuff in the Data partition. Should be able to boot the stock recovery and do a factory reset which will also wipe the data partition.
As mentioned above you dont need the whole Kies suit. You can just install USB drivers. To make it simple as possible I stated using Kies but you can obtain the drivers elsewhere and install them rather than the whole Kies suit.

I can't even browse files from my computer, my phony is only detected by Odin ATM.
The stock recovery gives me two options: Quit, Download mode.....
