Choppy scrolling - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my vibrant, which I smashed , the launcher+ and launched pro 3rd app draw was super smooth. With the mt4g it is very choppy. Is that a gpu issue and is there any remedy?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

This is one thing I miss from the Vibrant as well. I'm not really sure if it's a GPU thing or a touch screen accuracy/tracking thing. My Nexus (HTC made as you know) is similar to the MT4G with choppier scrolling than the Vibrant... so it might be something similar with all HTC phones. The Vibrant was definitely the smoothest android phone I've seen though... (graphically at least)

I dont have any lag in my app draw. I did with the stock draw though, thats the reason I use launcher pro. That lag can ruin your overall impressions of the phone for sure...maybe its a ROM issue? I am running the unthemed iced ROM.
At any rate hopefully it will get better for you all after a few more optimized ROMs hit.

I was running a live wallpaper. As soon as I turn it off the app draw lag reduced by 95%. Yeah the stock sense draw lags regardless.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

So is your scrolling as smooth as the Vibrant's now? I'm not running a live wallpaper but there's still no way my MT4G scrolling in any menu and the launcher pro app launcher is anywhere near as smooth as the Vibrant was...

Liberated Aria FR007 speed?

Is anyone else having the issue of the FR007 being slow and laggy? When I scroll through all my apps, there is a huge lag. And the sliding of the home screens have some lag in it too. Is it just my aria or something that I did wrong while rooting/flashing? If there's a way to fix this, please tell. I really like FR007, but am thinking about switching back to R012. Thanks in advance.

Simply put, even with the stock kernel, no.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the new rom
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Yeah. I did a nandroid backup and then wipe data. And then flashed.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
No lags here. May some service or app working in background?
their is some noticeable lag, the stock rom from att is deff faster but isn't nearly as clean ;(
OP, I had the same problem, ended up going back to R012. I was sad.
I was using CM6.1 rc2 until my apps started closing (dolphin browser hd, Rom gripper, etc.) Then I switched to liberated fr007 and haven't had one issue. The only thing that ever gave me a lag was overclocking widget, live wallpaper, and using an alternative home screen (ADW. Launcher, Home++)
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Yeah it lags for me. Especially if I use Pandora radio
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Try this.
Go to market and get Overclocking Widget.
Put the widget anywhere on your homescreen.
Tap it, grant it SU permissions, you will probably have to tap it again for it to display.
Now on the 2nd slider that says Maximum set it all the way to the right.
Uninstall the widget, whichever method you prefer and the lag problem will probably go away.
* uninstalling the widget makes it where it won't automatically slow your phone down when it hasn't been in use for a while, which means you have to mess with the slider every time you unlock your phone.
** this may also have a negative impact on your battery, but if your like me and charge your phone every night it shouldn't be a problem.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
You shouldn't be using an overclocking widget or setcpu with the stock fr rom- it will result in more lag and unpleasantness than you started with. The stock kernel simply doesn't support over or underclocking.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
It doesn't support OVER clocking or UNDER clocking, but setting the processor works just fine--there is no issues, that's what saved my battery life actually & the phone runs great.
There is no need to set the processor with a third party app if you are using the stock kernel. Hell, even cm6.1 defaults to 600 making setCPU optional. I saw on the other thread that you think developers too often blame apps for malfunctions but I think you will find that devs and contributors are just as sick of newbies spreading misinformation and not listening to sound advice and attributing their own folly to wrongly defamed software. If I were anyone reading this thread I would encourage you to be wiser than I and let this, and other new troll threads die before they begin.

until we get a decent kernal that supports OC, you're just messing things.
I just end up running slower and stuttering in many apps.

[Q] CM7 Launcher pro & scrolling

Is there a way to make the launcher pro scrolling speed as smooth as CM6.1? I had a wonderful smooth as water scrolling between homescreens and in the app drawer, now it runs worse than htc sense.... anyone other noticing this issue?
Hey there im running CM7.0 #17 and I got no problems here running launcher pro. Maybey u should reflash the rom and then see if it's smooth?

Have you tried it with CM6.1?

I had the same problem with CM7. There are a number of people reporting weaker performance with LP on CM7. The developer has been working on an update so hopefully it'll solve the problems but there's no eta.
I switched to ADWex for now. When LP's fixed, I'll switch back for the widgets.
EDIT: The LP developer (Fede) just posted the following: I've just finished fixing the 3D drawer for Gingerbread, it will be included in next update. Also added a fix for the graphic performance under Gingerbread. Hopefully this means will see the update soon!

For me the app drawer is super smooth, at least as smooth as in CM6.1. Normally my Legend is OC'ed @825MHz but even @600 its not doing such a bad job (running build 13). I do not use the 3D drawer but I'm guessing none of you are.

I have no smoothness problems on CM7 (nightly #19) I'm not using the 3D drawer though.
Mines running awesome with 2d app drawer and fancy homescreen transitions.

Mine is running at 806MHz. I'm not saying that it makes 2 frames per second, but on CM6.1 launcher pro was EXTREMELY smooth (like >45fps) even at 600MHz. Now it runs just acceptable for my taste only when overclocked, something between 25 and 30fps I think. Not enough reactive for my liking...
(oh, in the case that now someone tells that TV has such a 'low' framerate and we all think that TV programs are smooth, the legend does not have motion blur )

An interesting development on the laggy app drawer issue

I know I'm not the only one with the problem of the laggy app drawer. When you first open it, it's perfectly smooth. Then, if you leave it alone for a second and use it again, it's extremely slow. It happens on any Acer-based rom, including unrooted stock.
Well, here's an interesting fact: This only happens with a static wallpaper. The issue goes away with a live wallpaper.
Why is this happening? Is it a problem with the launcher or the rom?

Wow, that is interesting.
I have noticed that some people experience this issue, and some of them don't. My app drawer does get slow and laggy, but its more just a bit choppy than anything else. It doesn't really bother me so I never worried about it too much.
To be honest, I hadn't noticed that either. However, based on your description, it sounds like the live wallpaper prevents the cpu governor from underclocking (by virtue of the fact that it's more cpu-intensive, thus requiring the cpu to operate at a higher clock), thus preventing initial lag. Just hazarding a guess, though.
finally a thread about this. Here's what I know. I don't think its the CPU scaling because I've tried to fix this. It still happens even when I force it to 1.4 ghz+ the only rom without this problem is virtuous xoom. And it doenst seem to be the launcher. I've tried swapping them around
stock rooted 3.2 and cant make it happan, using reg walpapper. Did not see on previous versions.
I have seen this on other 3.2 tablets... I assume its a gpu thing or just a bug in 3.2

looks like it is hc 3.2 issue - i wasn't experiencing this on hc 3.1 roms
i was trying as well find out the reason...
only thing what i found out - when the lag is there - killing any of running apss will kill the lag for some seconds as well and the app drawer become smooth again.
tested with quick system info pro.
Its the otherway round for me.......the app drawer lags a lot when i use live wallpaper and lags a little less when i use a static wallpaper....i think it depends on the kind of (live or static) wallpaper used on the device.....

It just always lags for me, but as I said earlier, it isn't enough to piss me off or anything. It's only a slight lag.
Everytime I see lag I just tell myself ics will be open source and one of our fine devs will make this awesome

Curious
I dont have a app drawer that lags but out of curiosity would someone with a laggy app drawer plug in a mouse to their unit and scroll the app drawer using that mouse. See if it makes a difference.
app draw lag
Could you explain app draw lag for me please?

SG2 and Hardware Acceleration

There's no denying that as it stands the SG2 is the fastest android smartphone out now. I don't own one but based on what i'm hearing its crazy fast. My question is with its speed would it benefit from the hardware acceleration that comes with ICS?? Does the UI in this phone running as smooth as an iphone or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus without hardware acceleration? Or despite its speed does it occasionally still stutter in between screens from time to time or jumping in between apps??

I think its just the browser that is using hwa right now, if its using hwa in UI on ICS it would really make a difference. Maybe not in the time it takes for stuff to happen but overall smoothness, wich imo is not there yet
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Hmm....that's slightly disappointing. I was hoping this phone would be just as smooth out the box based on what everyone is saying about its speed.....well thank God for ICS, cuz the stuttery UI is the androids OS main Achilles heel....we'll see what happens
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well - it isn't really the "stuttering" people hate about android. Others think it isn't polished like IOS. Not to mention since it's so new - there isn't a lot of "good" apps for it.
With ICS - it'll take use of the graphic processor for the UI so that the primary dual core processor can focus on the tasks. In gingerbread, the processor is doing everything / and the graphic is only doing games. =/

You forgot HW accelerated video playback and internet browser ;-) Also, you can always download and use stock Gingerbread launcher, which uses HW acceleration too, AFAIK.

Well,as long as you don't underclock the device it's buttery smooth. To avoid confusion,Samsung's TouchWiz is hardware accelerated and it's as smooth as the iPhone etc.But even with alternative launchers it's really really smooth.I hate even the slightest hints of lag/stuttering and get annoyed very easily. With the S2 I haven't been annoyed for a long long time(well, sometimes things go wrong when you mess with the device just too much ).
Gingerbread offers HWA, browser, video processing, touchwiz 4.0 to name a few.
However, ICS is 'supposed' to take HWA one step further and fully optimize our high specs - mainly our GPU.

Htc have hardware accelerated sense 3.0? it's laggy as hell.
Google devs simply didn't deem it necessary, also because not all of the android devices had a decent gpu at the beginning, but obviously all of them had a cpu. They told devs not to do garbage collection regarding this issue, which is imho a very weak strategy. Good that they changed their mind with ICS at least: better late than never, but ofc never late would be better

Not ! Touchwiz is crap sense is awesome and it doesn't lag either sense 3.5 SON
MyTouch HD (Black)
Kernel demonspeed v7
lagfree 1516Ghz - 768Mhz
Edited Build Prop
Beats Audio
Gingerbread 2.3.5
Dark Side Sense 3.3 !
I own both HTC Sensation and Galaxy S2, I put Android Revolution ROM on the sensation and its smooth and fast, even when I downclock it to 800mhz.
I think by default Hardware Acceleration is not enabled for sense 3.0, the rom fixed that and to be fair.. I really like the sense interface and in terms of software, HTC is really ahead and offers better execution than Samsung.
Speed wise, the galaxy s2 is much much faster even when down clocked to 800mhz, I'm on VillianROM 3.0 and everyhing is flying.... I never liked the stock browser, my browser choice is Dolphin Browser MINI cos its fast and no lag and it can download from multiupload sites
I much prefer Sense over TW, it's a very polished ui, while instead TW is a complete mess: the colors are put together randomly and the overall feeling is that it's much less refined and elegant. TW looks like something designed for kids, while instead Sense has more of a business look, which i like much better. What actually stopped me from getting the Sensation is the fact that it actually performs much worse compared to the GS2, and lacks internal memory. I also got used to AMOLED screens so now i don't wanna go back to LCD because it feels like downgrading. But hey, this is kinda ot
Touchwiz 4.0 is awesome.
All videos of sense ive seen are laggy crap.
TW4 adds some nice features, simple to use and is hardware accellerated - just what i want from a launcher.

It's cheap and dirty, but I always set animations to half speed (.5x) and use Nova launcher with the animations cranked to fast. That makes me feel all warm inside.
My advice would be to root and flash a custom ROM such as Parandroid.

How exactly are you defining 'lag' though? I'm on a rooted stock ROM and stock kernel with no issues whatsoever, speed is much faster than any phone I've used before.
I have tonnes of apps installed on the stock ROM. Runs okay at the moment, beautifully smooth
there is definitely lag on the touch gestures. i see it and it's been commented-on in reviews.
eg. when you gesture to scroll or pinch expand there is a momentary delay (fraction of a second) before anything happens. just long enough to be annoying. it's not instant.

That's because of the poor touch screen sensitivity of the phone.

That's not lag, that's just the lack of sensitivity in the touch screen. It's hardware related but if you look at this video from oode (definitely subscribe to him for quality tech videos) it appears that this issue isn't there in Firefox for some reason. As of now I don't know of any solution as such.
