I've only owned my exec a couple weeks and already I notice the pivot hinge loosening.
Has anyone tightened theirs? If so, any tips?
Get in touch with HTC and see if its warrantied.
Likely just needs something tightening.
Altho I work in a customer service department for a laptop repair workshop and they would likely accuse you of having bent it the wrong way and class it as "Accidental Damage".
In which case you'd be getting a bill for a hinge (£12) and labour (£130).
You may find HTC are a little nicer than my lot tho. Hehe.

I don't have a loose hinge yet, but I'm sure we will all be at that point eventually. I noticed two small screws on the inside of the hinge (underneath the screen part) when you twist the screen half way around. I wonder if they do anything useful
I've noticed those screws as well. There's also a single screw on the base side. The base metal piece is the wiggly part on the non-screw side (right).
I'll wait another day or so to see if anyone has tried this yet. If I don't get a response, I'll hold my breath and give it a go.
If it works and I end up tightening my unit - great.
If not, then I've just made a very expensive mistake.
Either way, I'll update my post here with the results..

HTC warranty the product unless a third party warranty provider is nominated - which is very unusual in the first year tbh.
Normally you return to the point of sale and they will either repair it or replace it themselves and bill HTC or send it back to the manufacturer.
In this case the product is less than 28 days old? So in the UK you would be covered by the Sales of Goods Act 1979 and entitled to a repair or if you so choose an exchange. This would probably also be the case in some form or other in the USA, but I suspect since this was a product originally intended for the UK market (and if the seller was British) you would be bound by this law.
Since you're in the US you will likely have no warranty with the retailer ie. o2 since large companies often operate warranty services within the borders of the nation it was originally purchased in and never beyond.
So you're best bet is to contact HTC - whom are an international company - and they will assess the claim and arrange shipping to and from either a) an authorized local repair agent or b) back to the main repair and warranty facility in whichever country that is.
As far as I am aware you should definately either contact the point of sale if a large company and enquire as to the repair service route or just skip them compeletely and go for the manuafcturer.

There doesn't appear to be one for the USA.
I'm sure there is but its likely going to be a case of shipping it back to Dubai or wherever anwyay so ping them some mail and see what they say.
Either way you must act quickly and keep a record of all correspondence.
In the UK we call consumer rights 'statutary rights' and the electronics world often goes far far beyond these in terms of warranty repair/s.
The only caveats are often companies assume that since you arent asking for or invoking your rights on a certain issue that they don't need to inform you of them.
YES, I have opened mine up & can give some insight. firstly it's all very robust and safe to open the hinge on the base side (have not opened screen side). it'a ALL metal - screw, plate u can see, & chassis screw goes into - so little/no danger of loosening things by unscrewing.
u will 1st find that the single screw on the base side may be half a turn loose. tightening it with a jewelers screwdriver will make a hug defferenc4e. possibly same benefit screen side but there r more screws there so I doubt it.
if u undo screw, base pops out as it hooked at one end, and thus only held by this 1 screw. u will find a nice, strong, ropey cable linking 2 halves - NOT a ribbon that breaks the moment u open this up - so safe again.
next, u can bend the plate slightly so that it sits lower in the middle. this makes a huge difference to screen looseness or play when in position. it's like tensioning a bow.
so, all very easy and safe FOR BASE SIDE. screen side looks way more delicate & hopefully someone will update this thread with similar info.
I found that when I dropped mine a few times, the screw came loose. a bit worrying cos it means a thread miust have skipped. but now I know that if the screw ever strips I can get it re-tapped by a jeweler and a new screw put in. there's enough chassis 4 this I think. please let us know how it goes.

Unfortunately it's now past closing time at HTCEUROPE, so I'll have to try and call them tomorrow.
I tried to take the pda apart and concur with Craigie regarding its simplicity. The wiggle in my Exec comes from the pivot and not the base plate with the single screw. I tried to remove the lid side plate by unscrewing the 4 screws that hold it, but it cannot be removed w/o spreading the plastic housing which holds the LCD. Scary.
There are 2 additional screws which bind the plastic housing (can be seen w/o taking anything apart). There are also 2 rubber inserts at the tip (tried, but can't pull out). So, my theory is that by removing the 6 lid screws and these rubber inserts, I'll be able to separate the plastic halves and remove the metal plate. Again...SCARY.
I'm hoping there's a screw which tightens the pivot. From what's visible it is made up from a press fit washer and a bent spring washer around a metal shaft. If there is a screw, it's on the side I can't get to. If there isn't a screw, then it's got to be another press fit washer used to hold the assembly together. I can use pliers to squeeze the opposite washers toghether if I can get to them.
If I have to, I'll send it to HTC. But I'd rather try and fix it myself to save the time lost and expense. Granted I should stay away from coffee or any other caffinated products before I do.
Just seen this posting by "stot" selling a replacement screen for the Universal, he gives a link showing instructions for stripping down the Universal, any help with tightening the hinge?

When I did open up the screen there is no inherant way of adjusting the tension of the spring. It is basically a rivet with a curved washer that gets squashed and provides the tension.
Only thing I could suggest would be to squash the rivet section on 2 sides with a pair of pliars, or vice grips may be better so that you can set the pressure, i.e. close the vice crips and adjust them so that they are snug on the edge of the rivet, open them, adjust them closed evvver so slightly and then close them on the rivet. This will basically put more tension on the washers.
Its from the school of smack it til it works but its all I can think of.
Ill put some more pictures up of what I mean on that link shortly.

I think it was the swivel action some were interested in any suggestions to tightening that mechanism? Photo's would be good too, or is that one a case of squash it with pliers too?

I've gotten as far as spliting the lid from the main section, but I was afraid to split the lid in half in order to get at the metal plate. No more.

Hey,
It's easy tightening the hinge! Mine was lose, and when I say lose I mean basically spinning 360 degrees! So what did I have to lose... nothing. I took my Exec apart.
When you rotate your screen.. to the right of the light sensor and 'Xda Exec' text there is a grey metal panel, with a small standard 'phillips' screw in there. Undo this one screw, and the metal plate will lift of. In there you will find a thick cable that connects the screen and the hardware keyboard. Simply twist the wire up a bit (you'll understand what I mean) and then put the panel back on, screw it up, and the screen will be tight as it was new..
I have started to notice that the hinge is starting to get lose again - wait there and I shall do the above proceedure again (undo the metal plate, unwrap the cable, wrap it back up and screw up) - oh look it's tight as brand new.
Don't worry about loosing anything whilst un-screwing you exec, NOTHING pops out!

That's a brilliant post Pete. When my hinge comes loose I will not have any fear about following your instructions. Luckily, the missus is an optometrist, so she has plenty of tiny screwdrivers, etc. Maybe I can get her to do it, that way if she breaks it, it's not my fault... :wink:
replacement Screen Help
I read the post and I thought someone said they have a link on where to buy a replacement screen for the HTC Universal. Can someone help me... I drop the device and the screen cracked Lcd.
Please, its been about a month since the earpiece on my wizard died and i can't find the part anywhere! I found one damaged wizard on ebay which sold for $400 with a damaged screen! obviously a fradulent buyer but the seller hasn't replied yet.
So if your wizard is water damaged, smashed, or simply inoperable i need this one part to fix my earpiece. Also my brothers wizard's speakers are blown so it'd be great if i could get a hold of those two.
What i need is the ribbon cable which connected the main board to the top sliding half of the device. Its a ribbon cable attached to a circuit board on both ends.
Please i really need this so i can bring the phone part of my wizard back to life.
PM me if you know where i can get this part or if you have a damaged wizard.

I've pm'd u, but does that mean your earpiece is broken as well? Cuz what i need is the ribbon cable that powers the earpiece, LCD, digitizer, softkeys, and everything else on the front half of the device. So if yours is broken then probably won't help mine out much.
i guess so. If you need an intact (front) then mine won't help--due to the fact that the "cal answer/hangup " buttons do not work.
The damaged one i bought off ebay came in today, swapped the parts out and now my earpiece is working again!! i'm so excited!!
Now i have all these parts lying around if anyone needs anything send them my way. The parts i got are:
The main board
Camera
Vibrator
Main housing (except for the front its really banged up)
Antenna
Keyboard
But no battery cover, didn't come with one.

hey fone_fanatic, wondering if you ever experienced your Wizard creaking when you press down on the front faceplate(below the call/end buttons)....seems to come from the hinge right under the the right soft key (the one connected to the keyboard), only thing is it only makes noise when the keyboard is closed and my keyboard is not loose at all(nice and snug)....just wanted to know if you might know of a fix for my problem, would you recommend me taking it apart or just sending it in for a warranty repair or do you know if it is pretty easy to somehow shorten the gap between the front face and the keyboard?.... appreciate the time.

no, mine doesn't make any noise when i press down there. well there is a noise but its coming from the battery cover. if your device is under warranty, i suggest sending it in if it bothers you that much. the reason being because when u open it up your bound to break a couple of clips which might make it worse.

don't worry about the card, its one of those advertisement cards you get in the mail syaing your pre-approved or whatever. i always keep those cards and use them with taking devices apart.

The reason i bought it the this one with the damaged lcd is because i couldn't find the part i needed (Rigid Flex Board) anywhere so i swapped my broken one out with this one. So if i was to put this back together not only would the lcd be busted but the earpiece won't work also the speakers would be blown (sold good speakers to a friend). Also the front case is heavily scratched/dinged, looks like someone smashed a brick on the phone.

Not sure but I'll will warn you that taking it apart even after removing all the screws is a huge pain, it doesn't just come apart it's still snapped together all the way around.
I didn't worry about mine because it was already apart for warranty repair (and not put back together right, left a gap, which is why I took it apart).

Let me tell you without the freak nails (or some special tool?) getting that plastic off is a pain. I used a tiny screw driver and worked at it for a while.
I've opened mine and there are some kind of paint at the tip of the screw (see the picture below). I don't know if that is for waranty propose but i think it is not, because let say if you take your phone to a service center, they take the screws off, the same thing happens, the paint is take away. So there is no way for them to note it.
But there is a bigger problem ) I'm sure when you try to take the scews off, you will damage some of them. So there will be a clear sign that you opened you phone.
And finally I recommand you to take it to a service center if it is under waranty. It is pain in the ... to open the back plate.
The blue material is 'loctite' type stuff to help secure the screws from loosening, not related to any kind of 'intrusion detection'.
What is your reason for wanting to open it anyways? There's not much to do in there except break it and possibly void the warranty.

Hi, can you tell me where can I get some replacement screws?
I've got an issue with my camera (black blurry dots on pictures) and i opened mine and cleaned it up but the problem seemed to be a hardware one.
Now i have to take it to waranty for them to replace the camera. I'm looking for replacements screws cause I rounded and scratched mine and you can clearly see it. There is no way they gonna accepts it for waranty like that

Hello folks,
I had a chance to work on my friends arc who bought a Rogers version and dropped it. He had it totally mess on the case and needed the full housing replacement.
I hope that doesn't happen to anyone. I didn't take any photos but I am trying to explain everything as it was to help anyone with this.
General Note:
- Anywhere you got stuck, watch some X10 Disassembly video
- Be very gentle to your phone in this process
- Besides all the screws the rest of the phone is put together with glue(Sticky Back) and snap(plastic for main board)
- Using this information on your own risk as I don't take any responsibility if anything happens to your phone.
Instruction
1) Remove the back battery cover. Thats the easiest part
2) Need star shaped screw driver[Trox](I bought the set for $5) there are 4 screws like that and two which opens with phillips screwdriver(tiny) This is what I bought
All the above we all have seen them
3) After removing the 6 screws remove the front fascia of the phone with a guitar picks, something skinny but sturdy*
* I recommend not using anything other than rubber or plastic in the whole process.
4) Main board is snapped in with plastic to the body which easily can be opened.
5) Little board on the bottom is glued(sticky back @ top) which you can remove with pulling little hard but make sure you don't break it.
6) Majority of the wire you see connected to mainboard can be discounted (snap in wires)
7) Removing the screen: from outside of the phone (like you are looking directly to screen like you normally do) you need to put something under neat and raise up the screen. This part has glue as well and its hard to lift but I did it and it should be possible.
8) if you are doing a full housing replacement, then there are stuff here and there that you need to remove and re-use it on the new housing(Like 3.5 mm jack, HDMI lid, etc.)

Thanks for the clarification. I was also suspecting since this area gets damn hot when playing games and even at charging (sometimes).
So seems like they move the CPU from behind the battery in X10 to near to the camera in Arc .
Can I change only the front faceplate around the screen without removing the mainboard? How easy would that be? I want to change mine to Misty Silver as Rogers only carry the Midnight Blue.
Also, for glued parts, do I have to glue them back on the new housing?

Glue part, they are more sticky than glued. You just simply stick it back where it was.
Where is the silver face you found?
This is retarded from them...
Digitizer and screen(one part) are sticked to the front face. In order to for your to change the faceplate only(front) you may have to go through the whole process because the wires from digitizer are going through a big hole to the main board. You don't want to mess around with $700 or $800.
Inside, everything is small. really small. I thought I totally screwed up the whole thing. Technology has gone forward alot since I was a kid putting radio together.

Yes, there are two board one above battery and one below batter @ bottom of the phone
On top is the main board
on bottom is the board for hard keys.
Nicely put together but they could have done a better job there....
Are there three parts to the housing? I assume there is the front plate, middle housing with the chrome, and the battery cover. The mainboard should be in the middle with the chrome. So I can't just detach the screen front the front plate? What is holding the three pieces of housing together? The six screws?
There are silver housings on eBay from time to time. Though, blue is a lot more common.
Three pieces. Back battery cover which is nothing.
Then there are two main pieces.
Chrome which is more like a holder of the fascia.
If I remember correctly, the front Fascia is the one holding all the board on it including that metal look piece(aluminum probably)

anyone know where i can get the tiny screw driver? I cant seem to find the correct one. they are either too small or too big.
how easy is it to replace the front cover, ive cracked the top of it and chipped a bit out the side (surrounding the screen) i presume it'd be simple enough. And does anyone know where i can get a good quality/genuine front cover replacement?

I bought the screw driver here at local tool shop. Home Depot sells them.

You can find the whole housing between $30 to $40 but the front cover is that actual main piece that holds all the internal components + the screen.
If the crack doesn't bug you much, I would not do it since you have to replace the sticker behind you battery as well, which is not easy to peel off + you have to take the screen off the old front fascia which is glued and kind of hard to take off.
Downside of the whole thing for me was the sticker. I have to find an alternative for this problem.

Basically im gonna rip it open tonight and attempt to fix my micro usb charger port, phone isnt being used i have a sgs2 now, so its no hassle if it dont work ill claim on my insurance, so looking for tips and advice on what to and what not to do when taking this beast apart please.

The only thing I encountered with my TMOUS HD2 is that one of the four torx screws that you have to remove to get into the unit has a "VOID" sticker that is exactly the size of the screw head and it came apart when I attempted to remove it. I don't know how this will affect an insurance claim if you pursue this yourself.
Also, pay close attention when moving/pulling wires. You have to put them back in the right order and pathways so that the phone closes properly. The volume up/down button is also a bit tricky when reassembling. I found it easiest to place it in the housing and keep it level so it doesn't misalign when putting the housing back on.

With the VOID stickers if you are extremely careful and steady handed you can remove them with a toothpick. What I did is take a toothpick and run it around the edges of the stickers to kind of loosen it up. If you are very careful you can kind of push the sticker around a little just enough to loosen it up then you can get the toothpick under it and pull up the sticker without tearing it. Just take your time it is not that easy but it isn't that hard either.
Aww man bsbokc, I wish I had you around when i worked on mine. I tried with a safety pin and I guess it was too sharp and it just tore right through it. I didn't think to trace the edge, I simply tried grabbing an edge and pulling across it. Fail.
A little heat might help soften the adhesive too. Just not too much to damage the phone though!

I personally won't do anything with heat with my phones. But since I am posting here I guess I will ask you guys a quick question so I don't have to open a thread. Do all of the TMOUS HD2's have just one void sticker on the bottom right hand screw or are there two stickers each on the bottom screws?
I have a phone I have to send into HTC and I pulled one sticker from my myTouch but I thought there were two stickers on the HD2 can someone please look and tell me?
Just follow the videos carefully and pause often. Make sure you have all equipment and take
your time..

I've worked on mine and two of my friends' TMOUS HD2s. It's always been one void sticker on the bottom right (volume button side).
The simplest way of taking you phone apart.... Get a credit card... American express proffered because it is hard..... Use a rzor blade and remove void stickers careful.. Open scrues gently... Makesure not to leave any mark on the screw...... Take the credit card and force it in the joint on the right side of the headphone part... Then gently push borax from battery compartment area.... Also help you self a bit by prying the lcm with the credit card... Once it is out a bit... Do same thing for other side... Don't slide it to the other side... You may damage you head phone..... Once it is out a bit from top... Slide the card the sides until it opens up... Warning don't. Slide near the keypad.... You might damage the copper connector for antenna. And whether phone is out... You volume key will pppout too :F

Well guys I got it apart and back together,
little damage to the case trying to open it as it never went back together properly when it was sent away last time.
I would say, make sure you have a stiff plectrum (guitar pic) so much easier
take your time,
and if you get stressed take a break.
I got it all back together again, couldn't get a new micro usb connector on as the main board is screwed.
