[Q] HTC Desire Z On Orange - G2 and Desire Z General

Does anyone have one?
I made the mistake of getting a normal HTC Desire from orange (with its gimped software, no longer able to tether etc)
I lost my Desire yesterday (i had wheres my droid installed but it cant get a gps signal )
anyway, does anyone know if orange have gimped/fiddled with this software on this phone?
I'd say its safe to assume they have, as otherwise im just going to go buy a sim free Desire Z from amazon.
If i do decide to do that, does anyone have the APN Settings that i'll need to make everything work (as i doubt the phone will come supplied with the APN's for all networks)
Cheers in advance

Your sim card provides the APN's required for Orange UK when you put it in the phone.
As for the phone itself, are Orange even selling it yet?
My Desire (Bravo) was stock from Orange, I guess you got yours fairly recently?
You could always root and install a generic rom on it anyway.
But if you can afford it, always get sim free, that would be my advice.

Thank you for your time in replying to my query. Most informative.
I wasnt sure if it was on the SIM or not, Thanks for clarifying that.
I got my HTC Desire stock from orange, which is now running stock orange froyo.
Also, just to add, there are still nice people in this world, my phone was just handed in!!
\o/ \o/

I bought my phone SIM-free from Amazon, put my Vodafone UK SIM in it and it worked straight away, no problems.

I spoke to Orange yesterday (Im due to upgrade)..... I was told Orange do not do the "Z" Desire, only the normal Desire & Desire HD.
I mentioned I can get one via Phones4U, on Orange, but this is a "stock" phone, so basically doesn't have any Orange software on it (which I would probably prefer anyway).
The guy I was speaking to didn't know if they will be doing the Z in the future.

most carriers are not stocking it in the UK for "economic reasons" i.e. basically they don't think its worth the money they are being charged, when for a bit less you have the old desire, or a bit more you can have the HD.

I have a sim free desire z on Orange- so while it is unbranded, the sim card still has a go at changing various things like bookmarks when it gets inserted. More annoying is the orange safeguard internet filter, which I have called to disable several times as it seems to reset occasionally. This doesn't just block nsfw sites, it seems to block all forums too (including this one). Switching to 3 soon.

Vodafone HD2 - Change to stock ROM???

My Vodafone HD2 is set to arrive tomorrow, and I know that because of the way Vodafone are that it is going to be heavily branded (White and Red instead of the nice ice cold black theme).
Does anyone know if i can flash it with a standard WWE ROM.
Will let everyone know how it is tomorrow. Got the last one they had in stock today.
if you are getting a HD2 on Voda tomorrow (like me) it suggest you have bought a strapon contract from a site like mobilephones direct (like me) as Voda does not do the HD2 yet. These phones come with a stock HTC ROM and are not branded at all. I got a hd1 on such a contract which is how I know.
Vodafone got the HD2 from today. My X1 came with very minimal Vodafone branding, so I'm guessing you might be ok.
@ Stoolzo - No my HD2 is from Vodafone themselves. They had it on their website for about 2 days and have now removed it (probably cause i got their last one,he,he). Their contract is really good on it also.
£40 a month, 900 mins, Unlimited text, landline calls & internet, and the best part, the phone is FREE!!!!!

I'm not sure if it will be heavily branded. There was some comment about it in the Vodafone forums, someone asking if the black theme that the HD2 uses would come to the Touch Pro 2. The guy didn't say that the HD2 would be red and white.
My last two phones from Vodafone weren't too heavily branded, so I think we might be ok. I hope so at least. Otherwise I will wait to Hard-SPL and flash the normal HTC stock ROM.
According to our corporate account manager at HTC, Vodafone have done no branding of the HD2 at all. It's the main reason why they have been able to come to market before any of the other operators. From what I'm told, the Vodafone HD2's will also be unlocked.
It's the supposed lack of branding that persuaded me to go with Vodafone, rather than waiting for O2. I hope the HTC chap is right.

@ Bagpuss... He,he now i can finally go to sleep alright tonight and stop searching the net to find out. I know I'm getting the phone tomorrow, but wanted to be ready to try and get any vodafone stuff off of it so i have a nice clean ROM.
Thanks so much for the info, will let you know how things turn out tomorrow.

I spoke to Vodafone last night, and the guy I spoke to also said that as far as he knew, it wasn't branded.
Rock on getting my phone...whenever that is.

Vodafone HD2 vs. Vanilla HTC HD2

Hi - hoping someone with a HD2 from Vodafone can help me!!
I pre-ordered a HD2 from an online retailer ages ago and it arrived the other week (obviously one of the first batch officially into the country).
However, in the meantime I'd also signed up to one on my existing Vodafone contract as soon as I realised they were offering them, as they gave me a good deal (ie. not the £££ handset cost!). Trouble is this one hasn't yet arrived, and I'm today told that VFs expected delivery has been delayed yet again.
My retail supplied one is currently sitting at my house as yet unopened. I was going to chuck it on eBay and hopefully get either what I paid for it or maybe even a slight profit (demand etc). However I'm getting increasingly impatient about my Vodafone one still not having turned up. I'm very tempted to do it the other way round and open up/use the one I've got, then stick the one from Vodafone on eBay when it does eventually turn up.
So my question: are the ones from Vodafone identifiable in any way? Branded? How about even the packaging and/or included documentation - is this Vodafone branded? If it is then I guess I'll just have to wait as I know it'll be harder work to get rid of the Vodafone branded handset as opposed to a retail one; however if not then I might as well with nothing to loose!
Thanks in advance, Simon
I have a Vodafone HD2 and there is no Vodafone identifiable things on it in any way. Vodafone hasn't made any alterations to the rom, well in actually fact you can't even tell you got it from vodafone other than the fact that they also send you a vodafone sim.
I'm loving mine, and it is also is sim unlocked.

Excellent - thanks for taking the time to reply!
Means I can crack open the one I have at home and then just eBay my Vodafone one when it *finally* turns up!!
Thanks again..

Hello Tattoo community! Need urgent advice to potential buyer :)

Hello,
Probably will buy this device tomorrow, used, dont sure ifs its unbranded or Vodafone (Portugal) branded.
I have a question ...
- If it's unbranded (and so on unlocked), there's anything I need to know (something in the firmware), so I can install "anything" I want?
- If its branded and sim locked... it's easy to unbrand and unlock? Should I take a look of something on the firmware?
Really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Tiago
There is no good way yet to unlock the htc tattoo locked to orange uk except from using the ismart sim 2008. Besides the simlock problem, you have a smaller screen than other android devices. So some apps or games might not work properly.. but most of them do. Also you have limited access to the market, that is, you can access products that have been specified htc tattoo compliant only unless you root the device and install the cracked market app. Besides that everything is ok.

I never said it's tattoo orange uk... I said maybe its vodafone portugal tattoo...
smaller screen? what's the normal screen for tattoo ?
he ment its small screen, compared to other HTC phones, most phones got 3+ inches screen, tattoo is 2.8.
about unlocking - its ur rights to try put ur sim card in the phone before u buy it. Myn was unlocked, thought they sayd its locked to they network. At same time - they use same phones for selling as locked to they network with a contract, as same phones for selling it for full price...

I dont want to count with simcard... always had problems with it.
So its not easily possible to unlock and unbrand a tattoo ?
Dude, if I had the chance I would have bought a device which is easily upgradeable to another Android OS or other ROMS (maybe with different OS').
But returning to your issue:
Unbranding shouldn't be a problem (I removed Vodafone Germany branding), but with unlocking there are problems with certain providers. Just put your SIM in first and see if it boots, otherwise I would take another device if the tattoo should be locked.

But if I put my TMN sim card on Vodafone Tattoo, it's suppose to work ?
Not understood what you explained, sorry.
Some carriers sell phones that are locked to them, others sell unlocked phones.
Here in the UK for instance, vodafone phones are not locked and an HTC Tattoo bought from them can be used with any SIM. Ones sold by Orange are locked to them and can only be used with an Orange SIM.
I do not know if Vodafone in Portugal lock their phones or not, the simple way of checking is by trying your non vodafone SIM and seeing if it works.
Unlocking the Tattoo can be done but costs $15 or so I believe (although with the Desire they then charge you another $20 - a very dodgy practice), far better to buy one that's not locked in the first place unless you want to use it on the carrier it's locked to.
You posted a couple of days ago - have you already bought the phone? Was it unlocked? Or have you not bought it yet?

Now I understood.
Here in Portugal, ALL phones are SIM Locked. Unlock goes from 50$ to 150$.
That's why I asked if it's easy to do it by us.
HTCCode.com say on the front page that it costs $15 but people in the Desire forum are saying they are being told that their device costs more - but only after they've paid the $15.

Does anyone know who the flagship network operator will be for the desire HD?

THinking of getting the DHD on my network Orange when i'm due for an upgrade in October and i was wondering if it will actually be available? Does anyone know what the flagship network will be?
Please don't say o2 lol, i hate those buggers.
As far as I know, Vodafone is going to be the "flagship". HTC seemed to be bigging them up a lot at the launch event.
Orange and T-Mobile are getting the phone too, but they didn't get a mention.
O2 so far aren't even getting the phone at all!
3rd party online stores are offering the HD on T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and Vodafone...always best to get from a 3rd party as to not get a crap branded handset!!

Yep, that's what I did with my TP2 and is what I'm doing with my HD
I have it ordered from a 3rd party on Vodafone. I wonder because it will be the first shipment will it have all the Vodafone crap on it or touch wood it will be sim free ??
Depends where you get it from and whether you're first shipment or not.
When I ordered my TP2 from mobilephonesdirect I was first shipment and Voda didn't even have theirs yet - so I got an unbranded one.
I don't know if somewhere down the line Voda got their stock and MPD started selling from Voda stock rather than sim-free stock...
I expect at this stage all stock that doesn't come direct from an operator will be unbranded and sim-free.
I ordered it from here immediately once they started taking orders so i should be in the first shipment - http://www.mobiles.co.uk/htc-desire-hd.html
Here's hoping its sim free then m8
I've just sent Orange an email asking about a release date. I'll post back when I hear something.
I never use a 3rd Party. Insurance is 6.00 a month on Orange. They replace the phone the next day usually no questions asked.
If you buy 3rd party you cannot insure your phone direct. You end up paying about 10.00 a month then if you want to claim they try everything to get out of helping you.
In my experience always buy direct. I know the branding is a pain. Custom Roms get rid of the bloatware. A small badge you can put up with.
If you buy a 3rd party phone the main operator will always tell you to contact who you bought your phone from if there's a fault.
That's where you will start having problems.
Sent from my HTC Hero
I phoned Vodafone about my TP2 when I got it asking if I can have insurance put on through Vodafone rather than via the reseller and they said "Yep no problem" and put it on for me! Not had to use it, but just saying...
That's good maybe it's just Orange. I got a phone from Phones 4 you years ago and Orange wouldn't touch me on insurance. I just like to deal direct because I get really good loyalty discounts.
Sent from my HTC Hero
I know what you mean. When I upgraded from my K800i to my TyTNII Orange were really really great at giving me a good deal.
I actually used to work for Orange about 4 years ago, and I still have a warm place in my heart.
I'm defecting to T-Mobile this time so I can take advantage of Everything Everywhere, makes me feel like I'm getting closer to Orange again.
Orange Care was by and large one of the best aspects of their service. I used it on my old SPV M2000 which I crushed on the day I got it by tripping over a rope fence. Problem I had was that they had none to replace it with so I got stuck with an SEP910i - which was no replacement for the M2000. There was a big scandal about it and the media got involved and in the end I got a brand new M2000.
I would have stuck with Orange for my TP2, but it was going to take a couple of months for it to be available on Orange whereas I could get it on Vodafone instantly, and I was so fed up with my TyTN II that I begrudgingly jumped ship. Not that Vodafone have caused me any problems. Orange just had a bit more of a personal touch. Vodafone is very corporate and don't seem as 'fun' as Orange are.
My work Treo Pro is on Vodafone anyway, so it's no loss
Wow, I ended up talking a lot there.
Orange are not ideal as they tend to mess with the handset too much for my liking. I did mention this in another thread but orange don't seem to have any information on DHD, one of the sell reps even suggested they might not even get it at all!!
mobilphonesdirect.com are quite good they have confirmed handset will be sim free and are offering the cheapest deals. Ordered mine today expected to get it on he 7th October, wait and see.
I'm pretty sure orange will get it since they're merged with T-Mobile. I read that they'll be rebranding around 2012 too. I can't imagine orange not getting it, it would be a mistake on their part in my opinion.

[Q] t-mobile UK logo on Desire HD or not?

I've been with o2 now for about 8 years and to be honest I can't fault their service. However, noticing they won't be offering the Desire HD (I have a Desire at the moment) I have been looking around, and notice t-mobile will be doing some pretty good deals. That, coupled with the recent news you can now use Orange's network, makes it all the more tempting. My question though, being a t-mobile noob, is will they slap a 't-mobile' logo somewhere on the phone? Would much rather have one with no branding but if that's what you have to accept to get an awesome phone and a considerably lower bill.. I'll take the plunge. Apols if this is mentioned elsewhere.
Cheers in advance

I very much doubt there will be branding on the phone itself, like 99 percent no... But if you buy direct from tmob you might have a crappy t-mobile rom on the phone, always best to buy offline or contract at carphone warehouse, or online with mobiles.co.uk or mobilephonesdirect.co.uk
JD
The ROM I can deal with, don't intend to keep the stock ROM going for long but thanks, will check those sites out
I'm 99% sure their won't be any logo. Bought desire from them and there were no markings at all, unlike Vodafone and orange. Only when you boot up the phone then T-Mobile logo appears which is the norm for all network issued mobiles. If you don't even want that then try mobilephonesdirect.com who issue unlocked mobiles with their contracts.
Why do you not get it through this site as they are offering it on O2 if you want to stay with them -
http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/Brands/HTC/b509/n442/p83978.aspx#tabsAnchor
If they say you cant do an upgrade change your number onto a PAYG sim and then port the number across
The regular Desire from T-mobile didn't get any hardware branding. So I assume the Desire HD will be the same
There were only light software branding such as a w'n'w icon on the internet and some deleteable bookmarks.
I am getting an upgrade from tmobile but to be sure i am gettign the DHD via Carphone Warehouse to ensure that it is unlocked/brand free.
