Wifi Calling uses plan minutes?

So I installed one of the two 2.2 builds out, and Wifi Calling works. It says that is uses the plan minutes. Is this correct? If so, what good is wifi calling?

It's for if you are in an area that has no cell reception but you have WiFi, yes it uses minutes.

Ok thanks for the info. That sucks, wish you could use wifi calling like VOIP

Skype works on the 2.2 builds.... it's still an annoyingly crappy app, but it works.

Lol...that will never be released by any cell carrier. Tmobile just wants to make sure you have the ability to use as many of your mins as possible.

This is how the uma wifi calling on my blackberry worked. I don't see the problem with it. You're still paying for a minute plan, and someone's paying for the internet you're using to make calls. There's rarely a time where I'm in an area that can get high speed internet service but not cell service. I do see the usefulness though, but it's not quite as cool of a feature when it uses your minutes.

And I was going I to cancel my cell plan and only pay for data

Personally I love it and was really hoping it would come to the Vibrant. The reception at my house is spotty, so this will help immensely. I'm glad that it's a free add on, and they're minutes I would have been using anyway so no big deal.

Ahhh, I thought it didn't use your minutes aswell. I thought it was just like the blackberry uma... oh well.

UMA on my blackberry always used minutes.
If you have a T-mobile USA plan and you are in Europe connected via Wifi, are your plan minutes counted as if you are in the USA or are you charged international minutes?

Last time I have read about it, it was free. People stopped talking about it, since T-mobile did not support the feature anymore.

T-Mobile used to give you the option of paying an extra $9.99 per month for unlimited Wi-fi calling. They took that away so wifi (or UMA) calling uses your minutes. It is still helpful to me for overseas or certain areas that have spotty T-mobile coverage. I travel a lot and it comes up. Which is one reason I've held onto my old blackberry for when I travel. Now that the Vibrant is getting this feature I can finally ditch that thing.

i use and pay for a no contract unlimited plan, Since then my recurring costs are a constant 75 month. That really is not that much, unless you are really really broke. I use this phone for EVERYTHING and 75 month. I do like the wifi hookup I have used my phone in reverse to call (call on my computer using tethering) and that works very well. But I just did it to make sure i could, BTW I called out of the country........ and still 75 month

Do you have to have it enabled during? Like If I'm at work and I have bad cell reception, should I just turn it on? I guess I'm asking is there some automatic way to switch back and forth?

Looks like if you leave it on, under connection prefs you choose "Cellular Preferred" which calls will route through wifi if there is no cell service...

How would this work out in another country? If I travel to say Europe or Australia and have a WiFi connection can I call from my US number to other US numbers? Can I receive calls to my US number?

Yes. Basically wifi essentially becomes an US T-Mobile tower.
Wi-Fi calling/UMA is one of those features that make or break a phone for me. I have ZERO T-Mobile service at home. My current main phone (BB8700) has UMA so I get perfect reception in my house, top floor or basement.

IMO, it would count towards your data usage so it should cost if not on unlimited plan.

Even with the unlimited plans, T-mobile requires the tethering feature to be added. As was stated before, it's free until they catch it.

Tethering is extra on top of unlimited data.
Change your user agent on your computer to android, ie mobile, or iphone,etc etc and you are good to go.
I have not been caught yet. I did receive a txt before I changed user agent though.

I been using tethering on my phone since day one and I have never gotten charged for it. I use it intensively. It will use data though. You gotta watch out for the 5gb cap.

Wireless tethering is included with the [MyTouch 4G] phone, per 2 T-Mobile reps, one who checked in to it after I told her what I had heard from the first. I asked her to annotate my record (case, ticket) Just In Case. 2 different reps said that tethering was not included, and was an extra cost. I didn't press them as I was calling about something unrelated.
I have tethered without charge and without problems before and after rooting/installing CM7. I don't tether much, but never hesitate when it is handy. My total usage is well under 5GB/month, FWIW.

They are right, but it's just like GM cars come included with ONstar but it'll cost you. There is no switch or button they can push to allow the tethering to continue after the message comes up unless you have the feature added. You can ask for supervisor, supervisor's supervisor, etc. but it's an automatic system programming. Before last December there was no tethering feature but it was also against the terms & conditions of T-mobile to tether and still is in there but now they have the feature.
Some people have found changing the user agent ID as a solution, don't know but using it regularly can definitely lead to the message and there's no options after that but to quit tethering or purchase the feature.

I've been tethering for the past 2 weeks now because I just moved into a new place and haven't been able to switch my internet over just yet. I haven't seen any changes in my bill, nor recieved any text messages from T-Mobile regarding tethering charges. I'm using CM7 and no other tethering apps. I haven't changed any user agents except on my phone's browser, and I changed it from Android to desktop. So far I've used 33,152.81 Mb (a lot of netflix streaming) according to the T-Mobile website. Although I've been throttled, it's not too bad because I'm in a 4G area and still getting around 2 Mbps.

if you are seeing 2Mb download speed you are not throttled. Throttled speeds are around 56k, or about the same as EDGE.

Well I recieved a text message from T-Mobile that I have been, and I usually get around 4-6 Mb at my new place.

they haven't tethered you yet then. according to their TOS, tethered speeds are around EDGE.

Yup. I pretty sure it's because I'm using CM7 and not the official stock app. Either way, this is just my temporary setup. Once I get my internet up and running I won't be tethering too much. It's nice to know that I can though.

Tethering has been enabled on my phone since I got it, without it even being rooted it has the wifi hotspot option, and I don't remember there being an extra charge on my bill for it...and yes it works fine.

I don't know where some folks are getting there info. T-mobile does not charge for tethering. I tether every day on my Mytouch 4g and never been charged for tethering. Ive been doing this since Jan.

Where do I find this TOS? Because like I mentioned before, I also use my tether everyday, and for hours! I dont get charged any tether fees. My data usage does go down hill though.

Ns4g international use

Has anyone used their NS4G phone outside the country for calls, txting or data?
I believe I can make calls using wifi but never have before unless at a comp using GV, and then it send the call to me marked as private. Is there another way of doing this with GV on your phone?
So tell me your story and what you had to do or how much it cost you?

Groove IP should work for over wifi, if your cell number is integrated with Google voice though, I believe it won't work. I could be wrong but when Sprint started to allow this I called in and asked about which international rates applied they told me sprints rates not the super low Google voice rates

GrooveIP works well overseas using a wifi connection. You will also get your GV texts on the GV app as long as you have a wifi or a mobile data connection.

You can roam in some countries too. You have to contact Sprint to turn on international data roaming if you want it though.
Last time I went to China I turned it on just in case an emergency came up that I needed to make a call or was lost and desperately needed data.

Sure. I use mine in Canada all the time. Sprint's Canada Roaming Option is cheap and everything works fine.
I've used it in Mexico but it costs an absolute fortune.

What prepaid carrier provides the fastest & the most stable data?

I have GNote and have using Straight Talk with not many problems.
but lately, the data connection seems to be much less stable than before.
It shows the data is connected but it doens't seem to be working. so I have to turn the date off and back on then it works.
So, I'm wonder if any other people having the same problem with ST?
Which carrier do you think that is the fastest and the most stable?
Straight Talk? Simple Mobile? Net10?
(Oh, and I've seen that Simple Mobile now provides $50 unlimited talk, text, & 3G/4G Data. Has anyone tried this one? How's it?)

I was having the same issue with ST and most times it was so bad I couldn't load up fb or even connect to Google services.
Luckily my mom has a plan on at&t so I was able to add myself to that with no contract for almost the same price..
Data works fine now and I was on at&t network when I was with ST.

[Q] Wi-fi calling?

I'm not sure if this is possible yet, but how do we get wi-fi calling onto the N4? I am on T-Mobile and am interested in using this feature since my reception at my apartment is not the best. I bought my N4 from the google play store if that matter.

There is no support for tmobiles Wi-Fi calling. However, there are several apps like grooveip which do the same thing and work well. They integrate with Google voice.

I don't have my N4 yet -- still stuck in Play Store limbo -- but I've been testing GrooVe IP on my LG G2x in anticipation and have been very pleased with it. It definitely has better call quality than wifi calling.

Have y'all been using GrooveIP with just wifi or have you tried 3g as well? I tried it over 3g with my old Infuse but it was horrible. Hoping that if it's better with 3g I could switch back to t-mobile again.

My problem with is with Google voice. I don't want to use something else for WiFi calling that uses Google voice. Right now I have Google voice on my Epic 4G (virgin mobile) and it is awful for texts. I don't know how people can stand it. I would definitely pay for t mobile WiFi calling. If we don't have it ill probably do att straight talk for the signal. Would prefer T-Mobile value plan with WiFi calling to get good signal everywhere the is WiFi and the faster 3G speed.

Just over wifi (I have the free version for testing, which only supports wifi). When my N4 arrives, I'll probably buy the paid version and at least try out the cell connection.
