Hey everyone,
I have the EVO 4g, and I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to consider rooting. The risks are a little scary as I would rather not get pooched and have to pay out the butt if something were to happen to my phone. So.. I'm wondering, should I root?
What are the benefits?
What is the best ROM in your opinion? Best for battery and function (meaning, I don't want to have to turn everything off for 30 hours of battery life). I'm currently using Launcher Pro Plus and I love it. Just wondering what my options are and what the XDA community thinks.
Why root.

Rooting now is very simple, it is no longer a complicated process that will take you 30min. I was in the same mind frame as you before I rooted, but I have to tell you that it was a great thing for me. After seeing the difference between my phone (stock HTC EVO) and my friends rooted EVO (running CM6) I was blown away. Rooting basically gives you complete control to customize you phone. I then rooted my phone and went straight to CM6 (Cyanogen Mod 6). It is fast and has quite a few options that you just cant get without rooting. There are quite a few apps out there that are only available to the rooted phone. I also was not a big fan of sense, or the huge boat load of apps that Sprint had installed on my phone and was able to get rid of them when rooting. The only advice I can really give to you is to explore the XDA Forums, see the benefits of each ROM, and all the words that you dont know, find the definitions for and things will make more sense. There is a lot of nomenclature here. I am currently running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS1. It is a sense based ROM with a different theme. I hope this was helpful.

Thanks for your response!
I have a couple of questions for you (or anyone else willing to answer):
1) I know rooting voids the warranty, but does unrooting make the warranty functional again? Can they tell that it's been rooted before?
2) I've been reading around and I've seen people simply go to unrevoked on their EVO, then root that way within a few minutes. I've also seen people connect it to their computer, install drivers, etc. Which is best? Are they the same basic principle, but one doesn't take as long?
3) I've been looking at Myn's TPT and I really like it. But I'm wondering how many hours I could get out of the battery using that rom. I'm also wondering what the best way to update that rom (when an update is released) is?
Thanks again! I look forward to getting the ball rolling and getting all the awesome features that my phone should include in the original pricetag!

Rooting with unrevoked is just a simple way of rooting. All the commands are entered for your automatically rather than manually using a comand prompt to flash images etc.
Alright, I did it. Used unrEVOked, and so far so good. I'm sticking with stock 2.2 for now until I can do enough research on quality ROM's.
I do have an additional question though..
I purchased SetCPU, but I've noticed that I can't "overclock" above 998mhz. Why is that? Isn't the processor a 1ghz? I wouldn't really consider that overclocking :-/
How do I get pass that so I can actually overclock it a little?

Only certain kernels allow you to overclock. Most custom ROMs come with custom kernels that allow you to overclock. You can also flash different kernels over a custom ROM. Just make sure that particular kernel is compatible with the ROM you are using.

Not pointless; there's the other 99% of the Aria users who would benefit from the 2.2 upgrade on the Aria. Of them probably 95% don't even know there are different versions of Android, but anywho...
My wife would be included.. I don't mess with her laptops, phones, etc, unless she needs me to, and her Aria runs great as is, but it'd run better on 2.2
does anyone know whether it's possible to use the Froyo firmware from the OTA update and flash it via a PC?
I'm using an Optus Aria (Australia) and I'd like to have Froyo, but would also like to keep it as stock as possible.
I think it's going to be a while before Optus comes out with the Froyo update.
Alternatively, is there any way to trick the phone into thinking it's an unbranded phone and then allowing the OTA update?

This may be a stupid question, but that's been posted on XDA? If so, I'll find it myself, no worries; however, I was just curious as I just got a root Aria off of eBay for simply playing around with Android hacking, etc.
Just didn't want to take the risk of bricking my everyday phone or screwing something functionally to the point where it works but is annoying.
Hi everyone, I'm located in Malaysia and I've just begun downloading the Froyo update via FOTA. I'll update this thread once the installation is complete.
For anyone interested, my Aria is stock 100%. Not rooted ever. My intention is to compare 2.1 and 2.2 on the Aria and see if there is a significant difference, although App2SD and Wifi Tethering are already good enough reasons to switch......
I'll post back again.
Well, I've updated successfully to the new Froyo. The experience wasn't bad or anything. If anything it was simple and quick. Once the update was downloaded OTA, the installation only took 3-5 minutes in which the screen would stay on for the most part (displaying a "syncing" icon of sorts). I did have a problem with the installation once it was done, the HTC Sense couldn't boot up. It just kept force closing itself when it couldn't load. To fix the problem I had to do a hard reset (this is why you should back up your data prior to updating). Once that was done, I was navigating my Aria with relative ease.
What are the changes I've noticed so far? Plenty! If you're like me and have never rooted your phone, you probably would've missed out on a lot (just like I did). Here's a list of what I've encountered so far.
1) Wallpapers for the "Lock-Screen" is no longer separate from your Home wallpaper. Might be a bad thing for some but I never really cared for it anyway.
2) Live Wallpapers are SUPPORTED now! Something I've been looking for a while. Now I can use timester on my Aria.
3) It has all the usual 2.2 updates like Wifi Tethering, App2SD, App Sharing, etc. Not lacking anything there.
4) New HTC Sense widgets (so far I've spotted a new SMS widget which is a lot nicer than the "Rolodex" widget)
5) Comes with Google Voice search, Google Navigation, Google Car Dock, New Gmail app and a host of other things.
In terms of stability, well its an OEM released ROM so I doubt there'll be any problems.
Well that was just my quick run through on the 2.2. Definitely worthwhile the wait and I'm glad its out now.
So how do I apply this to my stock Att aria??

Well I'm officially an idiot (yes, it has been said before ), but the Liberated Aria Froyo ROM is from the Gratia and on Froyo.
Yes, that's pointing the obvious, but I'm sure people may have missed that (I clearly did, though I had no idea how/why... ).
So when this does come officially, rooting is lost? Or is it just a matter of time before a new method is developed?

Guys, Just use the liberated ROM. The new hboot will just screw your rooting process over. OTA updates suck anways. AT&T bloatware.

I used Liberated Froyo for a few weeks, but it was a battery draining, laggy, slow, gimpy WiFi-d piece of junk. Use CM! But if you like Sense, I don't know what to tell you. I would NOT recommend Liberated Aria Froyo.

Me neither. But after a research I realized that it becomes slower because of the Live Wallpapers, even when you're not using them. I installed the LW zip on the stock rom and it became slow. So that's why the FROYO rom is the way it is. If someone could disable that I believe it could run a lot faster.

I don't want to play the devil's advocate... but I wouldn't talk so down upon a great ROM since I have had no problems with it being slow and laggy, no problems with the WiFi (on both kernels), and my battery lasts just as long as it does with CM6 (about a day (18 hours) to a day and a half without a charge, depending no my overall usage) with a fair amount of e-mails and texts coming in, calls everyday, and moderate gaming and internet usage (I have WiFi set to sleep every 15 minutes, mobile data to turn on when WiFi is off, both GPS and network locations are on, background data and automatic syncing is also on)....
Maybe I'm lucky? ...
So while CM has it's quirks and advantages... don't just shoot down the other ROM...
EDIT: Oh, and I don't use SetCPU to underclock when sleeping.

rooting is very easy, i rooted mine a couple of days ago and flashed a custom ROM today
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/15/universal-android-rooting-method-visionary-method/
There are plenty of guides in the development section. I only rooted mine last week, after having been completely new to the android system.
To give you any advice, it would be to read around what you have to do before you actually do it. For a first time user, it could sound complicated, but it really isnt.
Also, I would go for LeeDroids custom Rom and kernel, they run immaculately.

The benefits of rooting your phone is a much faster phone and improved battery life, and much more other stuffs
the main benefit is the possibility to run apps that need special privileges... you should do when you want to run those apps. rooting by rooting is pointless...

I want to root my DHD, however I need to downgrade my phone to 2.2 from 2.2.1. Is it possible to do it on a Mac?
Any help would be great!
@eiKr, there is a whole thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
i really don't know, since i don't use a mac...
@niks_5in, type "LCD density" on the market and you will know what i meant! =oP need to say, i don't see any bad side effect in rooting, but since you came from iphone, you should read a lot on dev section before make any kind of change in your device...
I was on the same boat as you...
Today I decided to root it and what a difference!
Should be possible on a mac since there are osx versions of adb and fastboot available. Think there is already a pre extracted pd98img.zip available for download from the downgrade guide thread.
You don't need to run any windows exe for the downgrade.

Someone Swyped my idea.
Most benefits has already been brought up, but one big benefit is to have full control over your device.
And I will soon flash the phone for the first time, just waiting for wid0w to set up a rom flashing tutorial (hopefully today).

Is that like using a higher resolution display on the phone? Can you show us a comparison?
+1 to LeeDroid 2.0.0 although you're best to look through the many available to see which one might suit you best. They're all pretty stable.
PLEASE remember that this is your choice though, nothing to do with the developer of the ROM if it goes wrong. There's plenty of information about how to do it so you should be fine! I successfully got root, s-off, recovery, and have flashed loads of different ROM's with no problems.
Be warned though that as someone else above said, it gets ridiculously addictive, you'll be checking for updates all the time!
Benefits of it for me is that I have control over my device. I got mine in the UK through Orange and there was a load of "bloatware" on there which I would never use but couldn't uninstall. Rooting and a new ROM solved this plus when a stable gingerbread ROM comes out, I'll be at the front of the line for it rather than wait for my service carrier to provide the update!

Yeah you can change the DPI in the boot.prop. Ill get some screenshots of my Streak up when I get home.
Yeah, I rooted mine because of those preinstaled applications such as stocks, filckr or news which i never used and they still kept running in the background. You can also make your DHD even faster by OC (+30% of CPU performance - safely), make the speaker louder so you can finaly hear it. Most (if not all) of the ROMs available are also faster and smoother than the stock and they should improve your battery life. However it is not my case, cause since i flashed the new ROM (Core Droid - nice eyecandy and super smooth) i'm still playing with the phone and sometimes i have to recharge twice a day
Its thruth that you can brick your phone for good, but if you carefuly follow instructions on this forum and think twice, its 100% safe (or 99.9999% at least).
Just one advice that might prove useful and i haven't seen it here on the forum. After flashing a new ROM, do not erase the instalation .zip filefrom the SD. Can be useful if something goes wrong, especialy if you dont have a card reader
just search for "visionary"
its a one click root tool
Yea I used Visionary and it's was very easy
Recently sold my iphone 4, and decide that I might give an android phone a go since I am seeing some fantastic development in this community.
One of the most intriguing yet confusing subject is flashing custom rom, with so many different custom rom around, I was wondering how you guys decide which one to use, consider that there seems to be quite a few excellent ones around? Or its just simply a matter of preference like choosing a theme?
I also very keen to see a custom Gingerbread ROM on DHD, since I have read that 2.3 will never be release for this device most likely, can anyone give me any insight of upcoming a practical version of 2.3 base custom ROM?
Sorry abt asking some many question on my first post
Thanks
I can only give you my two cents regarding my your first question.
personally i've tried Android Revolution and LeeDroid
LeeDroid is fast but i didn't like the custom animation and bootloader(i still want a stock looking phone) so i opted to flask AndroidRevolution so far so good it's fast and has excelent battery life!
I see.
Can you give me an idea how the custom improves the battery life practically? may be some facts/statistics as well?
I notice leeDroid and revolution can overclock the phone CPU as well, is that safe?
BTW, I see this terminology "S-OFF" a lot, what is that?
Thanks for your quick reply
s-off stands for "security off". By default your phones rom memory is read only or "security on". Basically s-off will allow you to read/write to the rom memory and install custom roms etc. There are two types of s-off.
The first is radio s-off which will allow you full read/write access to the flash memory and skips the security check when flashing radios to allow you to downgrade as well as upgrade your radio. This type of s-off is also unable to be removed by flashing an official update. Because it cannot be removed except by deliberate action it is considered a must have. Having said that you cannot actually flash a radio without the second type of s-off.
The second type is engineering hboot s-off which replaces the bootloader itself (like the computers bios) with an enginering version. It is often referred to as simply eng hboot, eng s-off etc. This type of s-off does not allow downgrading of the radio and will be wiped out if you flash an official update to your phone. The advantage of this type of s-off is that you will be able to use fastboot commands from the bootloader. Ironically without fastboot you cannot flash radios so in the end it is reccomended to get both types of s-off.
Personally I use the Leedroid rom with his custom kernel 2.06 and its awesome. I don't have the transition animations. I have also heard good things about ARHD but havent used it since the early days.

S-off stands for security off, the htc bootloader comes with certain security measures, to make parts of the nand chip read only! By making the device s-off, you can write to these partitions, letting you flash custom roms, custom recoverys and modify the /system partition.

Personally I would recommend using CyanogenMod ROM's the CM team put a huge amount of effort into stability so the roms tend to be very usable as a day to day ROM without the bling (and attendent cpu loads) of the fancy UI's ala Sense. Cm6.1.3 is the latest stable release whilst if you want to give gingerbread a whirl try cm7.
BTW although what you say about 2.3 is undoutably true do not worry as I am as sure as can be the dhd will see 2.4 and subsequent releases.

I'm not happy to see you, that's a Desire HD in my pocket.
I'm making a guide which should be out tomorrow regarding flashing custom roms.
I, for one, opted for revolution and I love it. It's stockish, it's fast, it's way better, excellent battery life
I just rooted my DHD and would also like to know what rom to get. I would want it to be Gingerbread-like because I like changes. But Android Revolution HD seems so popular, fast etc it makes it really hard to choose. Is there a comparison of those two somewhere? Pros and cons? And which rom has the best performance in games for example?

you must to know that you can change the transitions and opening scene... =o)
to be honest, i stick with what most people flash... the rom is more tested, and even if you are a really unlucky guy and got problems with, it's more easy to get support, and find people with same issue.. =oP it's always nice to think about it when you are a noob, like me! =o)
in the case of leedroid and revolution, i tested both... decide between a bad and a good thing is easy, but decide between two great things is pretty hard, the decision is taken about trivial details. i won't say what i got cause it's pointless... you really should try both (and even more if you don't be satisfied neither! =oP

It seems that is it not possible unless buying the IME unlock code from the network or third party website.

The only disadvantage of rooting is that your warranty will be void -but that is easily reversed. You shouldn't flash the official OTA (over the air) updates either - as they will disable your root possibly for a long time, but don't worry , as soon as an official update is released: It will be in ROMS within hours.
Market is unaffected - you can find apps that require root on the market!

If you decided to root you're phone, Look also @ the MIUI rom.
It brings the best features of IOS,Android and Samsung Bada together in a very stable fast Custom rom!
Ey up fellas. I was gonna start my own thread, but this seems to be just what I was after
Coming from a Dell Streak which is an amazing device, mostly due to the work of DJ Steve for his custom ROMS. But I can't deal with the constant resets and sticking touchscreen, which has nothing to do with the software, its happened since day one. So I've decided a Desire HD is on the cards
The missis has a DZ but I havent put any custom ROM's or s-off'd it, so I'm a newbie in the Desire family area! But I've messed around with the Streak a lot and countless other WinMo 6.5 phones so I should be ok.
One question: I'm getting the DHD second hand. Say the guy who had it before me has updated it OTA to the most recent offical ROM, would this mean that I can't S-Off it? Or is there always a way to get custom ROMs on it etc?

Hello XDA-Dev members,
When the new Android 2.3 update first came out (it was months ago) I didn't update because I searched Google and I heard really bad comments about it. I'm still on Android 2.2 (3.70.751.1), Kernel version (2.6.32.17-gee557fd), Baseband version (2.15.00.11.19).
Is it worth it updating to the latest version? What features am I missing out on?
If you want to root, then dont update. If you dont care about root, the update to gingerbread didn't really give the phone any new features, but updates are put out for a reason, to solve problems with the phone.
Better battery live!

there is nothing that you can do to better battery life than flashing a custom rom, even the crappiest rom battery life wise out there is better than stock, in fact i can say my battery longevity did drop for me going into suckbread, i despise it and this is coming from a guy who never wanted to root in the first place, it adds nothing significant to it save for a new facebook app and some minor changes wich you probably wont care for anyways

I'm a root user and i'm not going back to stock.
Root, root and root some more. Like buddy said above even the worst built rom out there will have way better battery life than what Sprint is putting out. Your one of the fortunante ones that can still have the option to root, why you would take a crappy OTA beats the hell out of me.

I appreciate your quick response. What can I get by rooting my EVo 4G? I know I should search here but there are too many threads and I'm just wondering if you could list some cool apps or things that can be one with a root.

lots of nice Titanium Backup features, SetCPU profiles, ability to modify your phone however you want. not to mention, with s-off, you can flash roms and kernels (which bring unprecedented battery life, responsiveness, and added features).
If you're still on 2.2 with 2.10 hboot then root it and get S-OFF. Then take the ota and see if it is what you want. You will be S-OFF so you can go back if you want. The real problem is upgrading before you acquire S-OFF...don't do that.

hello xda-dev members,
when the new android 2.3 update first came out (it was months ago) i didn't update because i searched google and i heard really bad comments about it. I'm still on android 2.2 (3.70.751.1), kernel version (2.6.32.17-gee557fd), baseband version (2.15.00.11.19).
Is it worth it updating to the latest version? What features am i missing out on?

Yes you should search. And the reason there are so many threads is because rooting can brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing. If you are going to root, make sure you read as much as you can handle to know what you are getting into. Make sure you understand about getting into recovery, making nandroid backups, flashing roms, flashing kernals, flashing radios, etc. Because once you root, everything has to be done by flashing. When sprint releases a new radio, you cannot simply update it like you would when you are not rooted, you have to backup and flash it. Things like that you need to read about and understand before you root.

Umm, no, if you root, then accept the ota, you will be s-on.
another benefit of being rooted is that you can use the wifi hotspot free. that alone will save you $30 a month. and although there is always the chance of bricking you phone, it is very rare if you have any common sense at all. and youtube has plenty of videos to show you exactly what to do.
Best root app ever . . . Adfree!
that is the only reason you need to root.
