Hi there,
I'd like to flash my phone back to stock because the volume up, 1, Q, A, FN, Shift keys are all not working. However, it looks like the first step in flashing back to stock is "enable download mode by holding down #1 and Power"
Well gee, that's impossible now . :-/ I was hoping to bring this into the sprint store to get a replacement... however when they see me running the Viper rom, I'm not sure how willing they are going to be..
Any ideas ?
Well my idea is this if you don't already have the insurance ... add it. Flash the stock rom threw clockwork and a kernal that doesn't interfere with the boot logo, then they won't even check in store if u go in for a keyboard problem.
But if you wanted to go all the way, break off one of the copper battery pins where the battery snaps in so the phone won't power on. Or apply a super small piece of scotch tape to them, and make sure its postioned where it can't bee seen easy, and the phone doesn't power on. Then go to the sprint store and say the phone will not turn on and for the past week or so before my keyboard keys bla bla bla have not been working.

Yeah I have that too, are they going to give me a fuss if I have a different ROM on it?
Well go figure........the keys are now working again......sigh. I didn't try to fix it at all on purpose.
I would odin back to stock and still go. To sprint store for replacement. And at my sprint store the guy didn't even power it on when I complained of screen wobble, or check for sd card. He just went to back room and grabbed another one. I suppose every store is different though, depending on how they follow rules.

I just got mine replaced for one of the battery contacts breaking, for reals. So it's not an unheard of problem . They didn't give me any hastle, though they did try to turn in on.

That's how it went when I got a launc day hero that had the EvDO Rev. 0 bug and I went to trade it in for a "with google" hero. He just took I and went to the back and got an unopened box and handed it to me lol. He didn't even bother to take the sdcard out until I said somethiing lol

I think you can use the command adb reboot download to put the phone in download mode.

... this is insurance fraud.
You can use clockworkmod to flash the stock di18 rom. After that, you can use clockworkmod to flash an update that restores the stock recovery. Both files are posted in the development section. I did this when I exchanged my wifes phone (the usb connection was broken so I couldn't odin) and didn't have any problems.

i know there are like 20 other bricked vibrant threads but mine is a unick question.
alright so i called t mobile like 3 day ago. and i told them i had a phone witch would not boot into recovery threw the key so they send me a new one. so the one i had at home i tried to unroot but some how i ended up bricking the phone. the problem with the phone is i cant boot into recovery since my phone is hardware lock. and when i tried to plug the phone to the charger it would start charging and the freeze on me. and also when i turn the phone on it would show me the vibrant screen and then it would go black and the key lights up, help and dont show me the booting s screen after the vibrant screen it goes black. and would i have any problem if i send this phone to tmobile bricked even thought i called for a hardware defective phone.
Try crying. SRY... meant searching.

can i just send the old one back. it was ok before i tried to unroot. i have a new one but as you read i got it because i told them i had a hardware defective phone.
If they have already authorized the swap, you are good.
Tmo is very root friendly. Two of their top app picks this month are setcpu and ROM manager.
I've swapped out 2 phones that were rooted with them without a hassle. The last time I swapped my myTouch, I didn't even bother taking Froyo off it. Not a peep from them.

no problem. I was scared to death when I took my Vibrant in the first time. I re-paritioned the internal SD instead of my external. This was before I was ok with Odin and within HOURS of buying the phone. The guy took a look at my phone and asked me what I did to it. I told him and he promptly grabbed me a new phone. He swapped it out in their computer and said "See you tomorrow!"
I <3 Tmo.

You're welcome.
So i accidently bricked my phone trying to update my modwm to the newest froyo one.
Now I keep trying too odin back to stock but it wont work. Ive bricked before and used my laptop and it restored but now it doesnt work on my laptop nor my desktop. They either both say the device is unknown or it connects and when I try to flash it either freezes on file analyses or param.
Im going to go to the sprint store later today and try to get a new one. When I try to turn my phone on i get the little phone arrow computer sign. Do you think if I tell them that my phone froze so I took out the battery and that happened they will believe me? Idk how much of rooting the sprint employees know. Should I deny everything?
You will likely need to tell the tech that you had some bugs (force closes or something) and tried to do a reset through recovery mode and ended up with a non-working phone. Techs will likely know a bit about rooting and roms, especially if they have their own android phone. They also know that rooting and 3rd party roms void your warranty and they are supposed to deny claims where the phone was running 3rd party roms.
Can they tell if I rooted it just by the phone to computer sign? I went to a sprint store earlier and they told me to go to the corperate store because he didnt know what that meant.. Also I bought it from bestbuy so if sprint doesnt cover it would bestbuy?

Bestbuy won't cover it. And if you plan on exchanging the phone, you'll have to go to the Sprint Corporate center. I bricked my phone the other day and it was only a $35 exchange for a new Samsung Epic. I only had to wait a day for a new one. They won't give you a new battery or SD card, so make sure to hold on to those.
Sorry about your phone.

I don't think it would matter, truthfully. If the computer doesn't recognize the phone to begin with, putting the phone into download mode won't have any effect.

Different usb cable maybe? If sasha101 can get into download mode the phone isn't bricked and there is at least still hope. Maybe re downloading odin and other files as well. Just a thought.

I usually have to rotate between the different pits (512, 513, 528, and no pit) before I can get it to succesfully flash, so this is something you can try.
I would definitly try a different cable. I wasn't able to use odin to load 2.1 and in fact I bricked (I think). Tried 2 different cables and tried someone else's pc. NO go. Went back to the best set of directions I had found, redownloaded all the software needed, borrowed my wife's cable and started over. Everything worked like I was told it should. I really believe I had cables. Will try to find a new good one for the next time I try Odin.
Good luck and Marry Christmas.

Umm.. if its not recognizing your phone you either didn't download the drivers; or they didn't install right. So.. (re)install them..
If this doesn't work its your cable; you'll need a new one.
Also; android isn't bricked until you can't get into download mode anymore.
Just because it doesn't boot doesn't mean its not bricked.

Had a little water damage on my epic last week. Everything ended up working ok, except the power button kinda 50/50. Got some more rain drops this afternoon, and power button is worse. It's in a bag of rice now.
Anyway, kind of annoying with the power button issue and was thinking about taking it to sprint. Guess it's $100 swap if I have insurance? What if I took it in with my friends battery (I think the water detector is on the battery?) Kinda want to be honest though...
Do you have the option to switch to another phone... say the Photon? Would you rather have a Photon or another Epic?
Get my upgrade/rebate like next month also, so what's coming down the line? I used to be a "gotta have a keyboard" person, now I sometimes think I'm hanging onto the past.... old school.
Thanks.
I'd still go with another Epic at this point. That's just me, though.
Gs2 is where its at

I wouldn't do the battery swap, because there is the swatch on the battery that indicates that it has water damage, but there is also one inside the phone, and they will check for it.
On that note, I have water damage on mine too, and I am seeing if I can find an evo or something equivalent for around $100. That way I will have a different phone, and the esn on my epic won't be deactivated so I will still have a backup.

Got the ROM on, but lost root so no way to reboot recovery. Good enough I'm sure.
if you want to stick with the keyboard, i'd wait for the epic2. otherwise, gs2 all the way. (or nexus prime if you can to wait.)
Call sprint and tell them if you can get an advance exchange, they'll ask whats the problem explain briefly tell them your buttons sudden stopped working and they'll send you a refurbished one in the mail for free, since your paying TEP. I did it that when my capacitive buttons stopped functioning now i have a "new" epic. if you get turned down, hang up and call again.
This is a no brainer ..... go for the Echo !
But really .... Wait for the SGS2
Today, during the day I tried to unlock my phone but the screen didn't come on. I kept trying and nothing. I pop out the battery and put it back in and the phone automatically turns on (it did this every time i took out the battery and inserted it back in). I can use it just fine but i can't lock it either. Only way I can get it to lock is wait for the screen to timeout and i can only unlock it by awaking it through the charger or USB. I decided to go into recovery and the power button does not work in there as well. I'm currently running a rooted Evo with the Kinged Shooter ROM. I also have insurance. Can the power button just be busted or stuck or can this be related to software? Any suggestions as to what I can do other than taking it to a Sprint store?

Go back in time and grab a version of your phone without the button issue. Don't worry about paradoxes because you'll just be creating an alternate timeline.

No he means get the stock rom in pc36img.zip format and place it on the root of your sdcard. Then pull your batteru and hold vol down as it powers on. Then the bootloader will read the file and ask you if you want to apply the update. At that point you will use volume up to accept it will flash a stock rom back onto your phone. This is the unrooting process no recovery access is needed to perform this

It will only work if you were rooted prior to revolutionary. If you used revolutionary then you will need to find the thread where the guy modified the hboot to s-on his phone. I would link it but I'm on my phone. I will link it tomorrow if you haven't found it by then.

If you just want a workaround, I believe tap tap app might work for you. You can set the proximity sensor to turn the phone off/on.

I believe I used unrevoked one click root to root my phone so i'm thinking I can unroot it. When I unroot it, does the Splash screen go back to the white splash screen? I'm asking because I currently have a black splash screen and no matter what ROM i've ever flashed, it has not changed back to the white one.
I do have a few questions for you or for anyone else regarding repairs and replacements, if I have TEP the $8/month insurance, does that also cover repairs free of charge? I saw that their is repair insurance for $4 and loss and damage insurance for $5, I don't believe these options were available to me at time of purchase unless my $8 insurance covers both. Would I have to unroot for the repair or for a replacement if I am paying for insurance? I'm just thinking well if i'm paying for insurance and not using my warranty, rooted or unrooted should be fine, someone correct me if I am wrong. I know that undoubtedly I will have to take my phone to a Sprint store to have this issue fixed or replaced if I want to continue flashing ROMs. I'd just like to be prepared for when I do take it to Sprint.

If you have insurance, a repair that doesn't require replacement of any internal circuitry is free IIRC. At most it's like $35 bucks. From personal experience, I brought my EVO into repair centers twice; the first time they replaced my screen for free, the second they gave me a replacement battery cover and didn't even ask for my phone number.
The guys at my local repair center are pretty kick ass. Actually almost everyone at their stores except one that I've been into in San Antonio are pretty cool. The sales guy who got me to switch to Sprint in the first place offered to give me his email address so he could share tips on Android since I was a new convert at the time.
Yea you will be ok. The repair guys will take care of you and if they are cool like the ones by me I let them know I am rooted and they dont put me through the ringer. Just unroot it or if you can just take an OTA update if it allows you too and that will take care of unrooting it for you
My launch Evo power button is starting to crap out as well. It works for a stretch then doesn't respond, and its kinda recessed into the body of the phone. I'm trying to hold it together until the GSII comes, and I'm using the app No Lock as a work around. So Sprint please hurry with the release, thanks.
So i'm looking at different threads to unroot and i've been reading that i need to run the s-on tool (which I can't because I can't select it in recovery) from unrevoked and then run the RUU. Some say to just run the RUU. Which one is it? Also, I would like to unroot to a stock rom where I can still use the unrevoked one click root and not revolutionary if possible.
The manager at the local Sprint store here says they are allowed to repair rooted phones as long as it's not software related. So with it being a repair for the power button, you should be fine.
Have you gone to the store yet to see what they can do for you? You're acting like they are going to call the police on you if you bring a rooted phone in there. They are not in the clouds of what can be done with Android.
Typed on my CyanoSavaged SuperEvo.
I've been having the same issue on and off for a few months. Sometimes the power button will not work at all, other times it will, and sometimes it will only work if you press it VERY lightly, if you try to press it normally it will take it as if you were holding it down and the reboot menu pops up. When it decides it really wants to act up it drives me crazy. I'd have to set my screen to never turn off.
I was hoping I could just keep from throwing my Evo into a wall until the GSII comes to Sprint, but then I found out that the upgrade is off full retail price and not a 2-year contract price, even though they make you sign another 2-year. And I'm not about to pay $500 for a phone.
So if it keeps doing this I guess I'll just take it in to get serviced, I really don't think they will care if it's rooted as long as it's a hardware issue.
Hi all, so I went to flash Franco kernel on my n4, and I clicked on nexus 4 kernels, but somehow ended up going to the page with the gnex kernels, and flashed that instead. I didn't realize that till after I bricked my phone when I went on my friends phone and then checked the page. Idk how that happened that I was directed to the gnex kernel page, but I was. So anyway, I hard bricked my phone and wondering if There's any way to save it? It won't even boot up, or go into bootloader mode, or anything. please help?? Thanks!

It doesn't turn on? What did you mean? Do you see the Google logo when you press the power button? Try holding volume keys and power to get to fast boot.
Try downloading the drivers from the pdanets software. I think they have a Mac version which will enable you to use fast boot on Mac. Go to Google factory images page and download the nexus 4 image. Unzip it and use flash the boot image by using the fastboot command : fastboot flash boot boot.IMG

Not to sound like an asshole or anything but to be completely honest, I kinda hope Google doesn't replace that phone of your for free. You messed it up by not double checking everything twice before clicking that confirm button when you went to flash a new kernel. You knew that if you messed up your phone is dead. But now Google has to shell out a new phone because YOU messed up, not Google.
Gonna ruin it for people that actually did get a defected device...

Not cool. You need to fix this yourself.
What were you thinking flashing stuff to your phone but not having the ability to use fastboot and other dev tools? If you're going to intentionally gut out the functionality of your phone, have the tools and willingness to deal with problems! This isn't Google's fault, don't leave them with the bill!

how can i double check something that doesnt have a device model on it? it simply says "Franco.kernel nightly r-number.zip", i dont know how i managed to end up on the gnex kernel list, when i specifically clicked on nexus 4 kernels. that was beyond my control, its not like i made a stupid mistake on purpose. i double checked everything, making sure i was on the right xda page, and i downloaded a zip file not an img file, etc, i did everything i could do, yet little things slip

Post the url you click that forwarded you to the gnex page. I'd be willing to bet that it says up top in orange, something along the line of "gnex>android development>gnex kernels"
Did you read the comments of that thread?
When you were in TWRP/CWM, the name of the file didn't hint at either gnex or nexus 4? It should have, if I'm not mistaken. There are always few ways to double check the file you downloaded.

k everyone calm down. I am sure all of us made that stupid mistake someday. None of us are perfect humans. We learn from mistakes. At least thats what we are suppose to do. Anyway, glad it worked out for OP.
So...it won't turn on at all? Did you someone flash a bootloader or something?
Maybe JTAG it. Hire somebody who knows how to use that technology and you could get it restored.

I`m calling google to tell them not to give a free phone to that guy! He should be charged every penny for the new phone!
Not to troll the OP, but man I'm seeing these threads all the time now and it's seriously annoying and down right fraudulent!
If you buy a new car, drive it off the lot and wreck it five miles down the road while breaking every traffic law known to man, you can not bring the heap of metal and plastic back to the dealership and demand another.
YOU voided your warranty! YOU flashed third party firmware! YOU improperly flashed third party firmware and bricked your device as a result. Do not blame Google, Franco, or anyone else for YOUR mistake!
Google has no responsibility for your device now, they guarantee that it works from the factory in the condition they sold it in. Once you click 'Yes' in the bootloader to unlock your device, you're on your own should you screw up... That's what that message is telling you!
I, for one, enjoy getting a nice phone at a great price. People like you are the reason carriers and OEMs charge $600+ now! Take responsibility for breaking it... Perhaps next time you should read, then when you think you know enough, read some more!
Spoiled children...
