I recently was prompted (and subsequently required) to update the Voicemail apk to the newest version. This update adds a voice-to-text feature, however this is a horrible implementation of said feature.
75% of what the person says is transcribed into gibberish no matter how clear the person's voice is, and if they aren't speaking clearly then it won't even come close to matching what they said. It was a good idea Sprint, but the attempt was futile in my opinion as it really doesn't work well at all.
Anyone had any luck getting it to transcribe accurately? I thought it was just me at first, but I tried it on my sister's Epic and my girl's Evo and it is exactly the same quality.
Just thought I would share my experience with you guys.

Good thing it's a free trial then....
I agree that it is a joke.
Even with it being a joke though. Why in the world is it a trial? I mean comon aren't there enough phone out already that use this feature that are completely free to their phones.
What's even worse is that their version works alot better. I can remember some older samsung phones having this feature that worked alot better than this one.

You're fine to update, all it does is update the voicemail .apk. If you can somehow get around updating it I would advise to do so, as the update is a complete waste of space.
You should be using Google Voice for voicemail anyways. It's infinitely better than the voicemail.apk, even if you don't want transcription.

I maybe trading one of my Arrive's for an Epic and was wondering if some of you Professional Epic Owners can give me a little insight into the status of the GPS issue with the Epic after the 2.2 update. Basically, is the GPS issue fixed or does it still take awhile before it gets a lock on you or does it even work at all?
Thanks
I ran both the stock EB13 and the EC05 and my GPS locked on in seconds and was incredibly accurate.
I agree im on ec05 works great doesnt say im in ireland anymore

GPS works great for me. Ever since EB13 (on EC05 Stock), it has been qorking flawlessly. Locks in seconds, and very accurate (with 3 feet at it's most accurate).
I had some GPS issues with DL18 but has been amazing on EB13 and DC05
di18 was bad for me, eb13 was perfect, ec05 was good, but now I am having issues again. Some users are experiencing gps lock issues after upgrading to ec05, some are not.
This phone has a mind of its own.
Mine has gotten progressively better every version. Only time I had a problem was on DK28.

First,...thanks everyone for answering my gps questions. I made the trade and yes, the gps locked on within seconds.
I liked the Arrive. Its a vey sturdy device however it had some things that I just didn't like. The keyboard is very nice in my opinion. But it felt like the phone may slip out my hand everytime I opened the keyboard. I think that that was due to the "tilt" feature for the display.
Another issue I had was that some of apps or better yet the apps that's a must for me, were slightly undeveloped. I know that it takes times for these apps to get all polished up and everything but I just couldn't wait. Many of them lacked trademark features...for example facebook lacked the ability to chat. And other 3rd party apps where not up to par either.
The issue for me was that there were no navigation app like Google Maps. There is a Map app on the phone however the issues with it is that there is no landscape mode, no voice turn by turn directions. The other option is to use Sprints Navigation App, which does offer turn by turn voice directions. However there is No Multitasking. So you can't play your music while using the any navigation app.
I had 2 Arrives and traded one for the Epic. The Reason I stil have one is because of Zune. Zune makes the Arrive a much better device. The ability to stream music, watch movies.videos etc is great. I think its much better than itunes.
If I were you I wouldn't make the trade yet unless you just wanna try something new or until the next update comes out, which ain't suppose to be until next fall. The update is suppose to bring multitasking, flash support and some more other features.

Radio is hugebpart of update
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
and ironically the Radio is the only thing that BLOWS on this phone. The ONE thing they had to do they screwed up on.
In order to build android you have to have the proprietary binary files for the wimax and cdma radio. the documents above prove that update has been built and they have the "new radio" if they are even going to update it. so i would not blame sprint/samsung for the delay, they did their job. google needs to finish with whatever tweaks they are working on and release the update or at least commit the code so we can compile.

I've seen this photo a lot...exactly where is the from (ie. the original link..)?
I'm not sure why a new thread was needed but this delay could be because of tweaks needed for google wallet as that seems to be the big feature coming to the Nexus S line.

I found this at opensource.samsung.com for the SPH-D720. Not sure if means much and still would be nice if they release come source code that they currently have. Either way no big deal, I enjoy my Nexus S and really dont any issues with it. I would like better radio signal but who wouldn't. You could get a phone much worse off at Verizon, AT&T, or T-MOBILE. So good luck to the people jumping the boat. I expect a influx of people joining up with Sprint before Spring and then it will bog down the network. I hope they have a plan in place to take care of that issue that may happen.

I generally set mine to check for updates automatically, and ask before installing . But most people I come across that do not update say " it's because I'm used to it the way it is" . They either do not want to have to learn something new, or they do not want to change the set up. They basically don't want to leave their comfort zone.
I've got mixed feelings about updates. I flash different versions so often I enevetably get the most current roms but I like to see a changelog first if I'm just at the my Apps screen. If there is nothing that makes me want to update then I stick with what I have for good reason. I hate Pandora now because it got worse with every update. Vplayer was once free but they snuck an expiration in with an update. Facebook has always been a hopes raiser and then a let down until this recent format they have now. It still sucks just not as bad. Tubemate and craigslist update so darn often I delete them until I need to use them. Figure that way it really feels like an update and I got to skip a few things they broke fixing something else.

Yeah tubemate has frequent updates, mostly because youtube is making it harder for them to download from it, and since it keeps getting removed from the market for youtube terms of service violations, every time there is an update, they change the apps internal name. This makes it install two different versions, and we have to go find the old one in settings and uninstall it, which is a pain. Oh well, the app is amazing enough to deserve it. It has had so many updates, that I've never had it not correctly work.

I've been up late tonight, and just so happened to stumble across this article over at AndroidPolice. Figured it might interest some people here since it includes our phone.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...e-numbers-gps-sms-emails-addresses-much-more/
Here's the thing, though. They recommend uninstalling the offending apk immediately, which I tried.....Unfortunately that gives me repeated force closes over and over and over while the system tries to run it, to the point where I had to restore to a backup. So what do we do about this?
UPDATE: You can remove HTCloggers.apk...all you have to do is restart afterwards.

Yes and no.
Yes because so many users run Sense.
No because I run AOSP.
Frankly, I wonder how many other serious flaws there are.

Many devs remove these programs and such to remove ciq. I can't find the thread right now, but it reads just about everything. It's so deeply imbedded into the framework.
It reads every button you press on your keyboard.
Every text you send and receive.
Every app you use and download.
The pages you browse on using the internet browser.
It even goes as far to read any spot on your screen that you touch.
This is spyware to the extreme. Sprint and HTC will say its not "spyware" and say its used only for marketing to determine how phones are being used to further develop for the current trends in smartphones. It's very possible they could steal personal info with this. Is it currently happening? Uhh...probably not, but there will still be a lot of paranoia about it.

Some of us haven't forgotten the XCP rootkit that was on some Sony BMG titles in 2005... hope HTC doesnt suffer a similar demise like Sony eventually has of late.
This has been removed from MikG.
This is exactly why I'm AOSP. (that and sub-100MB ROM files)
I read the article too- (I have an Androidpolice/Android Central) feed in my Pulse reader....
I already knew CIQ and such were slimy embedded spyware...but the Treve app- spotted stuff I hadnt deleted already... Sprint sent me a "letter" about bandwidth usage and We-KNOW-what-Your-Doing" ----
I'm not amused by HTC/Sprint's collusion... leaving our bottoms out there in the cold for anyone to do whatever with.....
I bet even money my phones been cloned... sometimes I can't use it for calls .. recently -and I'd not had a single missed call or problem in a year.
I'm not a happy camper.. worried about my credit card #'s and really really am annoyed by HTC sliming us this way...
to the tune- that it'll be an icey cold day in hell before I'd consider buying another HTC phone for anyone in my family- (my family has 3 Evo 4g)...
We are not amused.....

it appears to me that this file has already been removed from MikFroyo. At least, I can't find it...
BTW, you can just remove it using TIbackup, but you'll have to restart to get rid of the repeated force closes. Simple fix, and I've done the same for CarrierIQ as well.
It was removed from sprint lovers rom as well... I couldnt find it at least
I removed HtcLoggers.apk from mine and after rebooting (force close loop) it seems to be working fine. However, is there an old log file still on the phone that can be read by some Spyware app that needs to be removed or does all this data need to come from the logger app itself? If there still is a log, I'm sure it has enough info to still steal my ESN and other stuff.

Ok, but since all of my ROMs, and anderson's Simply AOSP v4 exclude tts and some language files, I'm wondering if its the problem. I don't even think NAV uses the missing files, but maybe they need to be in place.
It uses the stock tts so you may need to copy that back in. Push to system/app. Pull it out of the deodexed stock rom.

Technically, yes since it is missing the necessary support file for the voice. I am surprised that it doesn't have an error message about "tts not installed" or something though. And is it wide spread? This is the first I am hearing about it..unlike the 6 threads on su binaries. I am guessing you are correct and it is ROM specific. Flash the full stock rom deodex and see if that fixes it for you.

Just making sure I understand what fc you're referring to specifically; are you talking about the 'invisible' fc that happens associated with gps where it basically stops working in Google Nav? Or is this a different one? The reason I ask is, if its the one I'm thinking of, it happens in every pre-official stock Gingerbread ROM release I've tried, but doesn't on EC05, and if this is the same thing you're referencing, I'd be pretty confident in saying that a *lack* of TTS doesn't cause it anyway. If its something different you're referencing then...my bad
Well that's what I'm sorta trying to narrow down, I always used TeleNAV on GB. But in Simply AOSP v4 I do see an FC about 1min into NAV, but once muted it dosnt happen. I wonder if someone has/could try the mute trick on GB to see if that fixes "the hidden FC".
I am on Hurricane and use SVOX British Lady and don't get any FC or vibration, EH17 ROM and modem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Interesting....I wasn't even aware of SVOX until this thread. I don't know when I'll have cause to go somewhere long enough to try it (I live about 3 miles from where I work), but I downloaded SVOX plus the 'Victoria' UK voice you mentioned and will try it (on EG22 here) next time I'm going anywhere of more significant length. If switching off of Pico fixes this issue I'll be thrilled, I haven't been able to consistently rely on Google Nav through Maps since EC05.
Yeah, I never used Google Nav because I hated Mrs. Roboto but with the British chick it is more tolerable.
