Is it possible to tweak the camera so the shutter and image recording (save to SD) are much quicker?
My brother's Fascinate is slightly faster than mine, but both are pretty slow compared to, say, the HTC Incredible (I have one running MIUI).
Just curious what it would take...
I have the fascinate & my wife has the dinc. I've noticed the opposite - my camera is faster than hers. Have you played around with the settings? Do you have the stock SD card?

Yeah, I have played with settings. I have the stock card and the camera is really slow, slower than my brother's Fascinate camera. Weird.
Wish it was a lot quicker like the iPhone 4 camera. I wonder if that's mostly due to software?
Do you have any apps that are hogging the CPU? Do you have the same apps as your brother?

The stock SD card is your main issue. It has a 2MB/sec write speed (class 2), vs photography standard 6MB/s write speed (class 6). In other words, the stock card is cheap garbage meant for storage, not speed. Buy a new class 6 or better SD card. The phone memeory is likely class 2 as well, so make sure you save to the SD, not local storage.

Anyone know what type/size SD card works the best using Android. I'm currently using an older Kingston 4GB and it flies. Haven't tried the stock 16GB CLASS 2 version. Any differences in speed with the stock 16GB (ie slower) or should I invest in a Class 4 (what size for the best performance)?
There is one easy way to find out. Copy the contents of the card you are using to your 16GB class 2 and see how it runs. It will probably be fine. I run an 8GB Kingston Class 4 with my Android Build and it works pretty awesome as well. Still a little quirky, but it's worth it.
What do you mean by quirky? My phone was quirky as well running android off sd, until I found the right custom rom and the right android build. Freaking love this phone now. Flawless.

It was quirky with hastarin 8.4. Dropping data connection, slow wake up, etc. Running 8.5.1 kernel now and it rules. Battery life still isn't great but if I turn off data when I'm not using it, it runs at 3ma and the battery lasts more than a day. Heavy use on data kills the battery however.

I know the differences between the classes, but I'm more concerned about how the speeds effect some what I do on the phone. Currently I have a 16gb Samsung C2 that I took from an Epic. It seems to be working ok, just nothing to write home about. I am thinking about getting a 16-32gb c4 or higher. I'm just curious about what gains I would see
*would the camera be any quicker?
*I assume the gallery would be quite a bit quicker, can somebody verify?
*I use my phone as an mp3 in my car, would the lists load faster? as a player its just fine but it takes a while to load all the artists/albums, which is annoying when I am driving. I thought those were indexed but would a better card help that?
*any other daily activities that would see a direct effect?
I searched, but most people just asked questions I already knew. Thanks

I have a 16gb class 4 and I haven't noticed any significant increase in speed from a 8gb class 2 card both were from sprint don't know the name of them yet

Class 4 cards will record HD without any hiccups. Class 2 skip all day long, because they can only right at 2mb a second which is far to slow for HD.
thanks for the info.
I just put a 16GB Class 6 card in my Evo and it more than doubled the write speed and more than tripled the read speed. I had the stock SD card that came with the phone. I believe it was an 8GB Class 2 SD Card.
I do alot of flashing of new ROMs and such, so the increase in write speed is very noticable when copying files to the SD card. I use to hover around 1.9-2.0MB/sec and now I'm seeing 4-5MB/sec write speeds.
I just got an "advertised " centon class 6 card. It seems a little quicker. I can't tell. Anyone can shed some light on this?
Maybe because the card is empty and doesn't have thousands of files on it, like my previous one does, might have something to do with something.
using a faster card will impact the performance slightly. Any time the phone has to go to the SD card to read something (opening apps, pics, videos, etc.), the faster it can read it, the faster it performs.
Is it necessarily noticeable? Probably not.
not a placebo at all, If you had let's say a Class 2 or class 4 sd card and you get a class 6 you can tell the difference.
I changed the stock card for a class 6 and I can tell the diffence as when you view pictures or play music.
For recording and watching video and copying data would benefit from a faster card. With video, you can get studdering if the card can't send and receive data fast enough to keep up with higher bitrates. If you have a card that reads two meg a second and a video that plays at almost four, the card would probably be the bottleneck.
On my old phone (moto backflip). Using aps2sd and swap on the sd card I noticed a difference. I went from the stock card to an 8gb class 6 and then to a 16gb class 10 and noticed a difference each time.

Glad to hear this as I just ordered a 16GB class 10 Patriot card from amazon, was only 35.99 Beats the hell out of my current 4GB class 4
The class of a card is based on write speeds. It could still have bad access speeds which wouldn't do anything to help performance. Random access speed is the spec you care about for stuff other than taking pictures or video. I would look up tests people have done on the card before buying and get one with fast random access speed. There is no easy way to know other than benchmarks people have done. For example I have a 2gb class 2 card that works with a few emulated games(castlevania por in particular) that even a class 6 gives problems. Also it only matters when you are accessing your SD card of course.
I haven't noticed any increase in performance with a faster sd card. The only thing I noticed is a lot better is HD video recording. It can now record HD video without stuttering like before.
I'm finally getting to the point where my internal card is filling up, and looking to get a 32Gb Microsd, but would like to get a decent one. What i want to know is, what is the fastest speed the Atrix can transfer data at? For example I dont want to get a class 10 if the fastest the Atrix can transfer is at a 4, just to keep cost down.
Thanks
I have Samsung 32GB class 10 and it works about declared speed.
A class 10 would definitely work however i would personally not shell out the extra dough just for a little faster transfer speed.
High class sd cards are really aimed at professional cameras to have speedier photo shooting.
However some olders phone that have mods that mount their filesystems on the external sd (to bypass the small internal memory) made everyone want the fastest sd cards to get a little increase in performance as a side effect.
Seeing this is not the case for the atrix a normal card would do well enough in 99% of the cases.

I disagree. If you use your card for media, as many do, the transfer speeds do matter. You'll cut your transfer times more than in half with a Class 10 over a Class 4...

I agree. Transferring a lot of pictures, music, movies... does matter. Also, better cards is useful for HD recording, loading data, games content... and price is not that higher.
thank you all, class 10 it is then, since amazon have some very reasonable deals this week!
While what you guys have said may be true, i still personally did not feel much difference.
For example my class 4 sandisk would write at 8 (or more sometimes) and read much higher than that. Also, i never really found myself in such a hurry when transferring things that the 2-3 mbps would make the difference.
I've also heard of a few cases where my friend's class 10 would go corrupt or randomly deleted but i assume this has more to do with the brand more than the class, i never stray away from sandisk and never had these kind of problems, a personal recommendation if you will.

Previously I had Apacer class 4 with terrible write and bad read performance so Samsung class 10 make a huge difference
Ya I just switched to a 33 gig class 10 from a 16 gig class 4 and it was worth every penny I transfer a lot of music to and from phone as well as pictures and it made a world of diffrence

Hi, I'm currently thinking about popping an SDcard in my xplay and was wondering how fast the slot runs at?
I was thinking maybe I will be wasting my money getting the fastest card on the block if the slot speed is slower than the SD card.
Also am curious in the difference in speed of the internal memory compared to the fastest speed of the sd card.
If anyone has any info on the above would be grateful for your input.

I've just borrowed an SDcard out of another phone (Samsung evo (yellow)) and benchmarked against the internal SD card and got the following scores:
External - (read) 34.36MB/s, (write) 20.0MB/s
Internal - (read) 89.76MB/s, (write) 53.35MB/s
Has anyone found an SDcard that is as fast as the internal?

I don't think there are sdcards available with the same read/write speeds as internal. On my old moto g with LP ROM I always installed big games to my sdcard using apps2sd and the only difference i noticed was that it takes a little longer loading an app.

I was just looking at the benchmark results database for the "a1 SD benchmark" app and there are a few submissions that encourage me to think it may be possible with a card like the Samsung Pro series which can do around 80r/70w MB/s. Only thing that has me wondering is whether the card interface would be a bottleneck?

It also depends on the phone I guess as to how much speeds it can reach.

Just Popped a Samsung Pro card in which is rated as 90/80 and an only seeing 54/21 so am assuming the sdcard interface is neutered in some way compared to some other higher end phones.
Anyone else noticing this performance ceiling?

Not neutered - All SD card interfaces are slower than the actual memory built in to the phone, this is right across the board for all phones. It's a known bottle neck that's a fact of life. That is the biggest thing in favour of more memory in the actual phone. I'm not a gamer but I have a ton of apps installed on the SD card and don't find any negative impact on day to day use. That said if I could have bought a 32 or 64GB version of the Play I would have instead of the 16GB version.
Your never going to see the tested speed in the phone equal the SD card out of the phone.
