I'm finally getting to the point where my internal card is filling up, and looking to get a 32Gb Microsd, but would like to get a decent one. What i want to know is, what is the fastest speed the Atrix can transfer data at? For example I dont want to get a class 10 if the fastest the Atrix can transfer is at a 4, just to keep cost down.
Thanks
I have Samsung 32GB class 10 and it works about declared speed.
A class 10 would definitely work however i would personally not shell out the extra dough just for a little faster transfer speed.
High class sd cards are really aimed at professional cameras to have speedier photo shooting.
However some olders phone that have mods that mount their filesystems on the external sd (to bypass the small internal memory) made everyone want the fastest sd cards to get a little increase in performance as a side effect.
Seeing this is not the case for the atrix a normal card would do well enough in 99% of the cases.

I disagree. If you use your card for media, as many do, the transfer speeds do matter. You'll cut your transfer times more than in half with a Class 10 over a Class 4...

I agree. Transferring a lot of pictures, music, movies... does matter. Also, better cards is useful for HD recording, loading data, games content... and price is not that higher.
thank you all, class 10 it is then, since amazon have some very reasonable deals this week!
While what you guys have said may be true, i still personally did not feel much difference.
For example my class 4 sandisk would write at 8 (or more sometimes) and read much higher than that. Also, i never really found myself in such a hurry when transferring things that the 2-3 mbps would make the difference.
I've also heard of a few cases where my friend's class 10 would go corrupt or randomly deleted but i assume this has more to do with the brand more than the class, i never stray away from sandisk and never had these kind of problems, a personal recommendation if you will.

Previously I had Apacer class 4 with terrible write and bad read performance so Samsung class 10 make a huge difference
Ya I just switched to a 33 gig class 10 from a 16 gig class 4 and it was worth every penny I transfer a lot of music to and from phone as well as pictures and it made a world of diffrence

I am thinking about purchasing a 32Gb microSD for use with my galaxy S.
My concern is that, is this too large? Are there any bad side effect like it being too slow to display picture/start up scann/run applications?
Which brand? That's probably more important for the speed than class (a class 2 Sandisk is often as fast or faster than a class 6 from a lesser brand).
The capacity of the card shouldn't affect the speed during most situations. However the phone does scan for media each time it is turned on or after disconnecting from USB connection (Kies or mass storage), the amount of time this takes depends on:
-the amount of media stored on the card and
-(probably) the read speed of the card.
Note that class rating is minimum write speed - so it's not a great indicator of real-life performance.
Also note that some too-cheap-to-be-true cards are actually smaller capacity cards that report larger capacities to fool the customer.
BTW where are you getting the card from (I want one as well ).
Hi flamingpitofhell,
I am looking at Sandisk as well and most likely get it from their online store. I am trying to find more information whether it is worth the trouble.
I don't think Sandisk sell class 6 cards (yet). Buying from their online store's also more expensive than online retailers (I can get one in Australia for AUD155, which is ~USD137, cf their RRP of USD200).
thanks for the pointer. will look around for local stores here in Thailand.
Which city in Australia are you in? I studied in Perth more than a decaded back.
I'm in glorious Melbourne mate, haven't been to Perth yet
the only LEGIT 32GB Sandisk available right now in the market is only Class 2
if you read anything else, it is FAKE, specially from eBay
wait until the other microSD manufactures start pushing out 32GB on class 4 or class 6 before buying.
i'm using 2x 16GB Class 6 until the 32GB class 6 becomes available.
I'm using Class 2 32GB card in mine, its fine.
Its slower when you're transferring to the card from your PC, but for most people thats only particularly problematic the first time (loading music collection), after that you'll not really notice a difference in the phone (the read speeds are basically the same, and the phone can neither read nor write to the card faster than a Class 2 card can cope with). You can see it in the benchmarks taken post-mimocans fix - Class 2 cards are no slower than any other Class within the phone.
Grab one now and be happy.

Where did you get yours from and how much for. I`m interested in getting one myself.
Thanks
my local stores already carry the real Sandisk 32GB class 2
too slow for my taste, i like to run Apps from the SD card, also use it as a SWAP partidion to prevent the LAG problem people complains about, it's a very easy fix

i wonder what would be better a 16gb class 6 or 32gb class 2...
is it worth sacrifising double of the memory for the speed?

it depends what you are trying to do
if it's just to listen to mp3, then Class 2 is fine
if you want to run games, software, watch movies, use it for SWAP drive to have no lag, then minimum a Class 6
Class ratings don't really seem to have too much of an effect on real world performance: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1468705. Just discount the last result from the SGS (it's most likely mistaken for the internal SD).
i rather trust my experience coming from PalmOS + WinMb where real life situations using a class 4 or slower cards, made a huge word of difference when launching applications from SD and watching movies from SD
funny enough the numbers reported on that topic shows SGS i9000 to have the fastest speed even using the same card that got lower speed on the other phones.
which seems to point out it's directly proportional to the CPU speed, and the multitasking software running in the back end.
however as you see on those test itself, there are speed differences between class 2, class 4 and class 6
the same class # can not be compared to another class # of a different size,
if you imagine a hard drive, the bigger the hard drive the more layers/disk area it has to read, the same is true even for static SD cards.
however as pointed on those test Transcend usually has the fastest SD cards in the market, that's why i always buy that brand for performance, using a 16GB Transcend myself, waiting for the 32 GB class 6+ to come out
Adata has 2 lines, the performance line, and the standard line
if you want speed get the performance SD cards
Kingston and Sandisk are mostly standard speed, they don't release much performance level SD cards anymore, but they do have lots of those on USB sticks.
I tried my Brothers Sandisk Class 2 32GB and it worked perfectly.
Granted it's not as fast as my Sandisk Mobile Ultra Class 4 but that card flies anyway.
Certainly for recording your large movie files taken with the camera it's no different in speed than using the built in SDCard on the phone.
I have no problems watching 720P video on my phone. I have no problems launching applications either.
So much misinformation...
of course there is no problem, the issue here is getting the top performance, any SD card will work just fine.
it's just a matter of how fast/slow are you able to torelate
The only time you will notice any difference in speed is when transferring data to and from the card.
However, when you have double the space of other cards to consider speed should not be a deciding factor.
I'm already looking to get the Sandisk Class 2 32GB card. It will store all of my work files normally kept on my Laptop.
My Sandisk Class 4 Mobile Ultra 16GB will be my spare ~ should the larger card fail...
Thanks for the information s everyone.

I have the 32GB sandisk card and works perfect. I have a 720p mkv file and my music on there. Playback was superb for the video with no noticeable lag. Mind you the card isn't anywhere near full yet. From my limited knowledge of sd cards, they put data on the fastest part first so the fuller it gets the slower the card is likely to get..
My plan is to put movies and songs on the 32GB file and reserve the internal 13GB for capturing video and taking pictures on the phone.
will the 32gb mirco sd class 2 be fast enough to run apps off the sd card without problems?? or should i sacrifice size with speed and get a 16gb class 4 or 6?
yes its plenty for this handset. many many many people already have theses cards in the droid and the evo and all have had much success with it.
Works fine for me.

I use a class 10, to reduce the current draw. If I were to run it a maximum speed it would be limited by the heat it would generate. So in affect it would be limited by the current it consumes. Not talking about leaks, but overall. Slower sd's are also limited the same way but consume their limit at slower speeds. Since the faster cards are limited (maxed) at higher speeds they consume less at slower speeds, because they are rated at uamps/read/write.
Engadget posted about a class 4 just the other day, due to my post count I can't link. But kingston does have one, even though it's much more expensive. If you're running out of room I would suggest only keeping vital media files with you, and using subsonic to stream anything else.
i wanted the extra space so i can use the phone as an ipod since my zune crashed
Class two is damn slow, I did in fact notice a good speed jump with my class 6

Got my 16gb on eBay for around 28! It is probably class 2 but I don't care lol
I bought one of THESE class 6, 16gb microSD cards, and it seems to be pretty good. No problems so far.
I'm using a class 2 to run apps off of and its plenty fast (also cause im to cheap to buy anything better lol)
Yeah class 2 should be totally fine

tkirton recommends at least a class 4 for Dark Tremor. My G1 would crash on anything less than a class 6 when running apps2sd but that phone is a bit inferior to this one. Not sure if Google has a recommendation for Froyo a2sd.

CENTON 16GB CLASS 6

I got kingston 32Gb micro sd card for less then 40 on ebay from us seller it is class 4. It reads at 9mbs and it write speed is at 4 mbs.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/24/the-surprisingly-seedy-side-of-microsd-production/
I just got an "advertised " centon class 6 card. It seems a little quicker. I can't tell. Anyone can shed some light on this?
Maybe because the card is empty and doesn't have thousands of files on it, like my previous one does, might have something to do with something.
using a faster card will impact the performance slightly. Any time the phone has to go to the SD card to read something (opening apps, pics, videos, etc.), the faster it can read it, the faster it performs.
Is it necessarily noticeable? Probably not.
not a placebo at all, If you had let's say a Class 2 or class 4 sd card and you get a class 6 you can tell the difference.
I changed the stock card for a class 6 and I can tell the diffence as when you view pictures or play music.
For recording and watching video and copying data would benefit from a faster card. With video, you can get studdering if the card can't send and receive data fast enough to keep up with higher bitrates. If you have a card that reads two meg a second and a video that plays at almost four, the card would probably be the bottleneck.
On my old phone (moto backflip). Using aps2sd and swap on the sd card I noticed a difference. I went from the stock card to an 8gb class 6 and then to a 16gb class 10 and noticed a difference each time.

Glad to hear this as I just ordered a 16GB class 10 Patriot card from amazon, was only 35.99 Beats the hell out of my current 4GB class 4
The class of a card is based on write speeds. It could still have bad access speeds which wouldn't do anything to help performance. Random access speed is the spec you care about for stuff other than taking pictures or video. I would look up tests people have done on the card before buying and get one with fast random access speed. There is no easy way to know other than benchmarks people have done. For example I have a 2gb class 2 card that works with a few emulated games(castlevania por in particular) that even a class 6 gives problems. Also it only matters when you are accessing your SD card of course.
I haven't noticed any increase in performance with a faster sd card. The only thing I noticed is a lot better is HD video recording. It can now record HD video without stuttering like before.
How much does the class rating of an SD card make a difference in a phone?
New Egg has a great deal on a 16GB Class 4 card.
I have a class 4 card now, but I've never used a 6 or 10. So I don't know if there's a whole world of performance I'm missing out on.
I run Cyanogen so I do have a considerable amount of APP2SD action going on. But I don't otherwise write to the SD card a considerable amount. Don't take a lot of videos....don't transfer 4 or 5 GB worth of music everyday. Nothing like that.
Visit Wikipedia or Google for the transfer rates and think about how much I/O you will be doing. The more stuff apps and data you store on your card the more important the performace and compare that to what experience you have.
Being used to sticking a stick in a USB 1.1 slot and groaning at old computers, so I tend to divide by 2 when judging such things. E.g. if it's 480m/b, I make the expectation off reality being closer to 240m/b. Can't complain about MicroSD's much since my current handset has a freebie 2GB >_<. I assume it's class 4 but it is fine for me, and most of my stuff is on it.

Take one thing into consideration: class of the SD card means nothing, if the device's own transfer (specifically, write) rate is too slow to utilize it.

Well that's a good point.
I have no idea what the write speed of a MT4G is. But I've had a Class 4 card since I bought the phone and it seems to work nicely. I've never said "Man I can't believe it's taking this long to save this file!"
So I went for the $17 special on New Egg for a 16GB Kingston card.
Search micro SD card 16gb on New Egg. It's the cheapest one. Brand name. Free shipping. Can't go wrong there.
No point in getting a class 10 unless you transfer via this usb adapters.. I think the mytouch stops at like class 8. Not worth it unless on sale. You can live with a couple seconds of wait time

I agree, I wouldn't go any higher than a class 4 or 6 for a phone. I have a ADATA 16gb class 6 and have never had any problems with transfer/read/write speeds

I have a Class 10 card, but only because I transfer files to and from my computer on a semi-regular basis. I used an 8GB microSDHC Class 4 card in my previous phone and one time I found myself needing to transfer a lot of data off of a computer. All I had left on hand was that Class 4 card with its SD adapter and it was horribly slow in my SanDisk MicroMate adapter that I typically use in conjunction with a 4GB SanDisk Extreme III SDHC card as a flash drive.
I agree that you're not going to get much more out of the phone itself beyond Class 6.
Sorry if this was already asked but I tried searching. What type of class micro sd card will I actually benefit from? A samsung class 4 32gb is out there for a good price but if the tablet will actually take advantage of a class 10 I would get one of those.
for the most part it will not. Except in moving large files to and from the card.maybe playing movies from the card.but even movies are OK on 4.6 class cards..if you could run apps or have there data from SD card then it would be a big improvement. I have used a 8 gig class 4 and now have a 32gig class 10.can't tell much difference other then when pushing roms and other large files to my tablet over USB.
I would say get 6 minimum but if you have the cash faster is always better. Just don't go out and spend the money if you have a class 4card.
Im sure you will hear diffeent from others.
Not really. I have 5 sd's, and no difference between class4 and class 10.
Up to a certain size that is. Anything more than 16gb, and I would move to a class 10.
Rumor has it, that you can run a 64gb. If you partition it with Partition Magic.
I think it depends on what you are using the card for. I don't think it is the tablet that would take advantage as much as a particular app that would. If you were using apps that required fast read/write access to the card (and you were actually using the card as opposed to the internal memory) then the faster card would be best. Keep in mind that not all class 10s are the same so also make sure to look at some of the benchmarks for the different cards. I know in terms of photography and hd video captures that a higher class card really does make a difference...but that is just an example of a real use application.
Hope that made sense.
