so i was reminiscing on the past today and recalled this sayno flip phone i used to have back in 2007 before i bought my first smartphone which was the touch vogue. sure enough i looked up the phone and it still sells on ebay. i would never give up my evo but i may pick one up for a spare phone in case of anything. best damn non-smartphone ive ever owned.
http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/sanyo/usa/scp-8400-phone/
what about you guys, what was your best and favorite non-smartphone/pda?
i guess i was just thinking of how obsessive i am with my evo and how much time i spend on the damn thing instead of being with my wife and kids more. the flip phone did everything i needed it too. hell i could even download opera mini for it for the internet.
Sanyo Katana II (still have as backup phone)

Samsung Moment
HTC Evo 4g (Current Phone)
Getting the EVO really let me embrace Android. The moment was such a lack luster device. Glad I was able to sell it on ebay for roughly $200 when the EVO came out.
Lg cu500. Swivel camera was awesome, and took pics and video while closed, and media buttons on front
my previous phones are in my sig, but i have a soft spot for the mogul (i think windows mobile/htc hit it's stride [back then] with that phone) and my hitachi g1000 that was huge, but was my first smartphone, has a 180 degree swivel camera, and can be used as a universal remote control.
I miss my tilt and tilt 2, I wish I would not have sold my tilt 2 on eBay. I told myself if I got the evo I would pay for it by selling the tilt 2.
I often look up tilt 2 on eBay just to see what its going for and then I realized Sprint had a version. It has been tempting to not buy a touch pro 2 as a spare.
Anyways I miss my tilt 2 the most, but my evo is my new favorite and I can't miss something that ibm have. I can't wait to see what this evo shift is gonna be.

Ok, who can beat this: Back in 2003 I had a Nextel i9 flip phone and a HP IPAQ h1915 PDA. I would tether the two together with a datacable so the IPAQ could access the phone as a modem and dial up Earthlink.

I had two, three, or four of some because I'd get bored with what I had and change back to something older. Funny thing is, I never owned more than one phone at a time... Old cell phones? That's a favorite subject of mine - I'll need to be careful not to rant on an on about all the obsolete phones I've owned over the years.
Let's see, my first phone was the Nextel i370:
Not much as far as phones go, but I was hanging out at the bar one day in 1999 and a friend of a friend had one, and mentioned that he got free service as a Nextel employee. Now, keep in mind this was 1999, so any cellphone at all was pretty cool, never mind actually getting free cellphone service. I put my application in the next day and I've been employed by Nextel/ Sprint Nextel ever since
Then there was the i1000+
Again, not much by today's standards, but a remarkable phone from a historic perspective. it was the first phone with a speakerphone, a true clamshell design (you could operate every function of the phone with the clamshell both open and closed, as opposed to the old school flip's at the time, which was merely a brick phone with a peice of plastic that flipped over the keypad), and it was one of the first data-capable phones in the US.
after that I had the i90c, and the i860, but the one I really loved was the PPC-6700:
A buddy of mine constantly called it "Fisher Price My First Smart Phone", but it was the first smartphone I owned, and it opened my eyes to all the possibilities of smartphones and I've been hooked since (and I've never owned anything but HTC since as well). I still get some use out of it to this day - I loaded it with as much music as it's 2GB card will hold and gave it to my son to use as a media player.
I've had the touch pro and touch pro 2 since then, and now of course the EVO, but I'll admit to having a soft spot for some of these old clunkers as well.
My smartphone history:
Audiovox SMT-5600 (Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition, AT&T)
UTStarCom PPC-6700 (Windows Mobile 5-6, Sprint)
HTC Touch (Windows Mobile 6, Sprint)
HTC Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6-6.5, Sprint)
HTC Evo (Android 2.1-2.2, Sprint)
My Motorola Krazer was the best phone i had till android devices (HTC Eris, Motorola Droid, and EVO) it was the only phone all i had to do was switch sim cards and i could use it in U.S.A AND Iraq
I always wanted to make a phone history sig, but I've had so many since '99 I can't remember them all.
A mix of smart and dumb phones(this is probably the last three or four years worth of phone I think..)
Samsung MMA-920

Motorola Q9C

For about a Month now, I've been told by the manager of my local T-Mobile UK store that he will give me a USB to 3.5mm converter for free (the one that came in the box) because mine was broke.
And for about a Month now, they've had no stock of G1s not just in this store but in every store in Birmingham and therefore unable to give me one. The manager told me the G1 was at the end of its cycle and soon to be discontinued.
Anyway, they STILL don't have any G1s in. Furthermore today I noticed that HTC have removed the Dream from their Product Page on the website.
Looks like it has been discontinued and will be replaced by the Mytouch 3G in America (I don't get the press' big obsession with this phone, it's all I read about lately yet it's been available on vodafone here for months?) and the G1 Touch (Hero) in the UK.
IT's a shame, I would have liked them to run both handsets at the same time tbh.
Dream is not being discontinued, it may simply be being dropped by tmobile. tmobile are douchebags anyways -- they shouldn't be debranding the phones since it misleads the feeble-minded into believing that they are the hardware manufacturer and it also makes it more difficult to track products. The Dream has very recently been picked up by rogers in Canada (only one month ago), so it is nowhere near the end of its life.

Precisely. Its at the end of the TMO lifespan. They really wanted the G1 to suck in subscribers and get a feel for Android's popularity. Now that the buzz has shifted towards other devices coupled with the expiration of the exclusivity agreement, TMO feels that it would be better off putting efforts on new/different devices. Business as usual.
This is exzatly why I want a iphone... G1, mytouch, hero, all this ****, they make a phone good going for a serveral months, then just drop it like that..
perhaps tmo uk is dropping the g1, i'm not sure. however, tmo us is NOT dropping the g1, nor planning on doing so anytime soon.

So go buy yourself an iphony. Quite frankly, if once you have the device they stop selling or making it, WHO CARES? If you ALREADY HAVE it, then you dont NEED ONE.

Correct. The current T-Mo US roadmap has the G1 being discontinued sometime in October 2009, and that assumes they have another Android phone with a keyboard to replace it on schedule, otherwise they'll hold off longer.
It's only been out a little over 8 months, talk of discontinuation is way premature.
Ive notice that Optus in Australia (one and only dream provider here) have taken the Dream off their website too.
Seems like the dream is dead.
Apparently the Hero is coming soon to Australia too (carrier unknown) so android australia might pick up.

The G1 has been available for just over a year, even if it's dropped it will have had the same lifespan as every iPhone revision.
Original: June 29, 2007

Yes the 3G is still available, but that's only because there isn't an 8GB 3G S...

almost every phone and every carrier is like that including the iphone, they are on the shelves for about a year then they are removed for the newer ones. if a Tmobile store had the same phones they did last year no one would have any reason to walk in the store except to pay their bill.

then get an iphone.. iphone only last about 1 yr anyways..
but ANYWAYS.. the g1 was just a prototype and used as a marketing device for android...
IMO i am starting to hate the g1 due to the lack of RAM...
i used taskpanel x to see how much free ram
g1: average 40-high 50s mb of RAM which is quickly used up for hero rom users
HTC still has the Dream on their US site. Rogers Canada still presses it and the Magic as 2 of their killer smartphones. The G1 isn't dead yet. Maybe to T-Mobile but the rest of the world still has faith. I completely believe it will be dead by next June (1 year after Rogers release) but it still has some life in it yet.
who cares if the G1 dies or not. the G1 was the rooting god and or savorer of this android community. it made the current roms, apks, themes and what not. it will never die, its just advanced to the current use and ideals of what the future holds. let them(who ever makes material of the consumers) make as many android devices as they want!! it would be great for a better product that can handle "OUR" speed and development. i personally still own a G1 and have my mytouch(now google ION) in hand and love them both as my babies. so i further state that if the production of G1 is dead then ok, I got mine. If not then eh, what more can you do to it that all the super dev's havent already??

It still says T-mobile on the front, and that doesn't go for UK Dreams, they don't say HTC on the side. HTC isn't an instantly recognizable name to average joe, unlike Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericcson ect, so if they see T-Mobile on the front they'll probably think they manufacture it.

They're also picking up in the UK, having the Diamond, Touch Pro, HD, HD2 and Hero released with "HTC" on them has helped.
The reason why they're not easily recognisable is because they've spent too long developing phones and let other companies (mostly network providers) rebrand them, o2 XDA's Orange SPVs T-Mobile MDAs etc etc.
HTC 'Supersonic' to ring in WiMAX on Sprint, Android-style
By Chris Ziegler posted Jan 17th 2010 10:51PM
Exclusive
Remember that mysterious HTC A9292 with WiMAX rumored for Sprint a few days back? Well, take a seat, folks -- we think we've got the lowdown on it here from a trusted source, and it's a bit of a monster:
* Codename is "Supersonic" -- a name we've heard at least once before.
* Feels a lot like you'd expect an Android-powered HD2 to feel thanks to a 4.3-inch non-AMOLED display and a svelte shell. (For reference, the HD2 is 11mm thick, but we don't have exact dimensions here.)
* It's got a kickstand on the back. This wouldn't be a first for HTC; the Imagio on Verizon has one, for example.
* Runs Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI.
* Our tipster saw it in white; production devices could be available in different colors, of course, but white seems like it'd be an intriguing choice for a phone of the HD2's size and shape.
* The phone's software stack is buggy enough right now to suggest that we're not looking at a release any time soon, but we don't have details on the projected launch window.
* It's fast -- Snapdragon fast, it seems, though our tipster can't confirm the processor under the hood.
We know 2010's just begun, but between all this noise and the promise of a legitimate 4G radio on board, let's be real -- we're already looking at a very, very early contender for smartphone of the year. Let's not run into any major roadblocks between here and retail, alright, guys?

I've gotten the bill on time for three months, but what's the S|P program?
its the sprint premier customer.
it makes you eligible for upgrades once every 12 months and you get 25% off all accessories.
you have to have an individual line plan for more than 70$ a month or a family plan totaling more than 100$ a month, pay your bills on time and sometimes jsut be with sprint for awhile.

Either you have to be with Sprint for 10 years or get a plan that starts somewhere around $75-$100/year and wait three months.
I don't suppose there is any word on if it will have 802.16m instead of 802.16e.
I look forward to seeing reviews of this phone. Even on 3G, this phone will be a beast compared to the Hero/Moment. I have my upgrade coming in October, but will see how 2.1 performs on my Hero when it is released.
A beast in more ways than one - it's going to be humongous.

Very true. I hope the Sprint Nexus One rumors are true. I don't know if I'd want a phone larger than that in my pocket. Although, the lure of a 4.3" screen is inticing
I looked at a comp video of SS to iPhone... not that much bigger. When it drops, I'll hit the Sprint store and see if I like the feel of it in my hand. I can always get a holster or something if I don't want it in my pocket all the time. Lol.
I'll wait til it's rooted, but should be eligable in november.
Might wait til it's rooted. But with the Snapdragon, everything should be super snappy from jump. I'll check the reviews vids and play with it in-store before making my final decision, though.
Who here feels that they were ripped off now that a new MyTouch 3G with these better specs is out? From what I've read, this phone is exactly the same as the regular MT3G, but with a better specs. To be honest, I'm just venting anger, but I'd still like to know how other MT3G owners feel.
Yeah somewhat. It's something they should've offered from the beginning with regards to RAM. The 3.5mm jack I don't care for too much since I use my ipod for music. The virtual keyboard also drives me crazy sometimes, which is why I - at first - thought I should've gone with the G1 but now I am holding off for the Motorola Shadow if it even exists and if it even will come to T-Mobile, let alone the US.
Or at least a high end qwerty android phone. The N1 looks tempting though...

I might be getting the N1 after my T-Mobile contract ends, but then again that's going to be a few months, so I'll wait to see what better phones come out.
I feel jipped!!!!!
I wish HTC made only one HTC Magic/MT3G and that was the 32A board. I don't care about the 3.5 mm jack but the extra RAM is what made me mad.
Damn you HTC for making a 32B board Magic/MT3G and damn you t-mobile for being cheap and getting the 32B board version
I don't since I just returned my Mytouch for the new version. Loving the 3.5mm Jack, and it feels much snappier. Now I have to wait for Cyanogen Mod to be compatible with the phone.
C0dy, were you within the 14-day buyer's remorse period or were you able to swap your old mytouch for the new one without any problems?
i just received my, mt3g yesterday and its the older version and i love it. i had the g1 since june and this is so much better.

Have you heard of the HTC Scorpion? That phone is a rumor right now but so far the rumors said that it has a 1.5 ghz processor and maybe running android 2.2 (I highly think that it will be android 2.1) and the best part......IT HAS A HARD QWERTY KEYBOARD!!!!

I was in the buyers remorse 14 day return.
I wouldn't say I feel jipped, but I am slightly disappointed. When I bought the mt3g, I didn't realize there was a difference between them, and assumed it was virtually the same as the others.
After learning about the RAM deficit, I was frustrated, but this is somewhat normal with techie devices. No matter what you buy, something will show up that's better/faster/stronger/etc. Had I known the fender edition was slated to be released, i might have held off for the few months (dunno if I could have held off 4 months, though). Ignoring the 32A/32B difference, it would have simply been for the 16g card and 3.5mm jack.
I still think it's a superior phone to the G1 and my 2g iPhone, and I still love the mt3g, despite it's faults. I don't think I've been this satisfied with a phone in years.
I'm going with Nokia for now on. i seen an E90 a few YEARS ago. (actually 2.... lucky bastards cost like 1 grand) literally like 2 or 3 years ago and i owned android then. The only thing android really has on it is how pretty it looks.
Sorry to say this post has no merit, how you going to complain about a phone out now when it wasn't available then? I use to work for T-mobile and at the time the MY3G was the best phone out, how about them G1 users?
Technology is changing so fast that manufactures are putting out more phone quicker then they use to it the past.
I have been waiting to get a hold of the HD2, guess what if I get it, there is already a quicker phone in the works already to replace that.
The MT3G is good stuff but I'm over it and require something quicker now
Just got this twit from HTC, are you guys talking about this:

They are now 32A boards, right?

Well I'm complaining because they're already releasing another android phone that is exactly the same as the old MT3G, but with better specs.
I know there's been other phones like this, for example Blackberries, but I'm sure there would have been leaked information about the upcoming upgraded phone.
As far as I knew there was going to be a Fender version released, but since I wasn't really fond of the look I decided to just get the white one, little did I know, T-Mobile would be announcing the release of a better MT3G, with the original colors, days after the Fender version was released. If I knew about the enhanced MT3G months before, I wouldn't have bought the one I have now.

Yes, we're talking about that one.

Well, if T-Mobile were to announce a possible better MT3G is coming 6 months from now, that would just be poor marketing. They would not have sold any of the originals. NO one would do that. The fact is, T-Mobile sold you the best, most advanced Android phone available at the time they released it. Complaining about an upgraded version 6+ months later seems, well, just childesh. EVERY phone EVER sold will be out done within 6 months! I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bash, but its like buying a laptop with top of the line everything and then the company releases the same laptop with faster processor, more ram, blu-ray, better vid card 6 months later at the same price and being mad about it, which happens all the time. Its just how it is with technology. 6 months from now T-Mobile will probably release a new Android phone that puts the new MT3G to shame at the same price.

Not really. There has always been a 32A and 32B since the beginning. Didn't Rogers released the 32A in Canada at around the same time that t-Mobile released the first MyTouch? T-Mobile decided to go the 32B route. Don't know why. Maybe it was cheaper. I don't know if the 32A was the most advance phone at that time, but it certainly has more Ram than the 32B.
Actually I don't even know why HTC decided to do the 32B, short of it being cheaper for the carriers to buy.

Oh, I'll rephrase, it was the most advanced Android phone sold in the USA. As for why T-Mobile, and various other carries around the world, got the 32B board instead is beyond me. Could have been origional production boards and when HTC started messing with roms they decided they needed more RAM. T-Mobile kept what they had so they would not delay release of it. That would be my assumption. Lastly, T-Mobile released before anyone else. I think by only a month, but they did.

But still, most Android phones, or phones in general have leaked information all over, and there are those that slip right underneath us. The only leaked information I remember about the enhanced MT3G, with the original colors, is the eBay auction it had a week or two before T-Mobile posted up the phone on their website. I would've at least liked the hinting that a better MT3G was coming out, just to build up hype, like Verizon with the Droid.

Ditto. That's t-mobile for you. However, from what I hear, no one can get a fender to get r00ted. I always seem to hear that they can get touch screen working. On top of that, I don't think most devs are going to pay close attention to r00t them. I'm sure they're working on fixing the touch screen issue, but as a secondary project.
I am planing on getting a epic 4g tourch but wanted to know if anyone knew what it would cost straight up at a sprint store? My renewal is not up until next year. Also does anyone know if i but the phone say off of bestbuy or eBay if the insurance i carry with sprint will cover the new phone? I dont know if it will being as i did not buy it from sprint. Thanks!
P.S. does anybody but me think 4.5inc is just to big for a phone.... Wish it was like 4inc.

My guess would be 599.99 off contract. For that kind of dough, you'd be better off doing an early termination, paying that and getting an new line with an on contract phone.
Not sure about the insurance though. Asurion is a seperate company they insure phones from all carriers.
No I think 4.5 inch is sweet, id like to see a 5 inch!
This is just my opinion here, but if your a year off from getting an upgrade I would wait. The epic 4g is going to be just fine for a long while yet. I've played with a freinds evo 3d and an international gsII. While they're cool, overall I was not impressed. I didn't see a signifigant increase in performance over this the epic 4g, and in some cases it seemed worse. I wuld wait for the 2nd gen of dual core phones or even until quad core....but that's just my 2cents. Good luck in whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll be an awsome phone.
From cellblock D
I plan on doing this at 14 months so I don't have to wait a full two years to get the promo price. While it cost 75$, the phone price will go from full price to the 199$. Still saving a few hundo.

i was trying to figure out the best options for upgrade as well. I have the best buy insurance so maybe my epic will take a tumble and then i can sell a brand new epic online and use that cash to buy a SGS2. However I was a little disappointed in the video i saw on engadget. They showed an epic touch next to the original SGS on att, they appeared to be the same thickness. Wasn't the big thing suppose to be the incredible thinness of the phone? hmmm

That's because they added in WiMax. So i would rather have the phone be 1mm thicker and have wimax.
The epic touch is gonna be sprint's thinnest phone anyway.

Insurance will cover your phone regardless of where you got it from. I bought my epic from Craigs List and it was covered.

To me 4" to 4.3" is about as big a a phone should be. I would love to keep this phone.. but i am starting to think CM7 (stable) will never happen lol
i think 4.5 will be fine because it has a small bezel too. but you are right nick, anything bigger than that is just crazy. Start feeling like we'll be the guy on hot tub time machine with the old school big ass phones
Love that movie!
When I just talked to Sprint this week, everyone said contract buyouts have been completely removed from their systems. So no regular rep can do that even if they wanted to.
Just a heads up.
You can definitely buy your phone off contract.
Itsjust not as easy as GSM where all yu do is connect your sim card and you're good to go
You have to call sprint after you buy it and get it activated with all the codes on the sticker and then it'll be tied to your account.
It also doesn't effect upgrade eligibility. So if you buy off contract and you're due for an upgrade, you can upgrade, keep the new phone in the box and just use your gsii as your main and sell the upgrade boxsealed to recoup a few hunneds

OK, so I'm not sure how long this deal will stick around for, so if you want to take advantage, hurry on to AT&T.
I recently got my HTC One from AT&T, still during pre-order. I had signed up for the HTC deal where you could send in your old phone and get at least $100 back. Well my proof of purchase did not include the IMEI number, so I headed on over to AT&T and asked them to reprint the purchase order with the IMEI (which they did), then the rep told me that AT&T also has a trade-in program and that I could do it through them. I said "what the heck, give it a try and tell me how much I will get for one of my old phones (Samsung Galaxy Captivate)". He said $24 + $76 bonus on this new special program we are running, for an even $100 for my old Captivate. Sweeeeeeet! Went back the next day with my old captivate and wifes old captivate, rep told me $9, so I explained there's a new program and that the rep the previous day said it would come out to $100. Sure enough I got $100 for each of the phones for an even $200. The catch is you can only spend it at AT&T, so I applied it to my bill, it will stay there until the $200 runs out.
HTC One on pre-order with a 2 year contract $200
Trade-in two old phones -$200
HTC One for free in the bag. I love it.
Just posting this so someone else with an older phone can take advantage.
Ya... All companies offer a trade in like that.. Nothing special
Thanks for the info.
I went to AT&T last time to order one, but since my 2 year contract has not ended yet, I decided to pay full price. The manager told me no, he can't sell it to me full price because this is a hot phone and only available to people who sign a 2year deal. So I left and bought the dev edition on HTC website.

Actually the thing that makes this special is the 100 dollar minimum. They will buy a blackberry curve for 100 bucks. That's a hell of a deal. That's why they tried to offer him 9$ the first time. I think this is a thing directly from HTC not really just at&t.
yes most companies do offer that... but $100 for a captivate?!.... Yes it is something special.
Also, I don't believe this is an HTC thing. I was able to get $100 for my wife's old captivate and she didn't even get an upgrade.

I bought mine online a week ago. Do you think I could walk into a store with the receipt and do the same thing? It just seems easier than the HTC trade in (which I might also do anyway since I have a Captivate and an iPhone 3GS).

Stop spreading false information.
I did a side by side data test with the one at the at&t store and the numbers were the same.
Taken with my HTC one dev edition at the store:

He's right dudes. I work at RadioShack as the assistant manager. You definitely can't even think about getting $100 for a captivate at the shack. I really would take advantage of this deal...pretty dang good to me. And I've been in the business for quite some time.
