Can anyone try to get Amon_RA going for Epic 4G? We need something better than Clockworkmod. Sometimes, I have to wipe 3x to get a proper wipe of the base system. I can provide hosting for the files for who ever wants to do this port.
Attention Amon
+1 for Amon RA Recovery. Its always been a staple of this thing we do. I do like clockworks data restore feature and i bet Amon has cooked something up wich is similar.

You might wanna try asking Forcytos. He did some really nice work on the recovery image for the Moment, which seemed to have more features and a better reputation than Clockwork.
Send Bart a message and ask him to. We have contacted him numerous times and he just is not interested in the Galaxy Line "german" I Even offered to send him an Epic to work on still no go. But as I said put some pressure on him show him people really want it and maybe he will actually listen. But as it stands he has stated several times NO!
Somene needs to port it to all the Galaxy S devices.

Has anyone come across a compatable version of amon ra's recovery yet. Clockwork is godd but I like amon ra better?
From my understanding... Amon Ra is no longer being developed for any platform... but that statement is based off something a heard a month or so back... so take it as you will...
Never say never. The source code is out there and plenty of people like the Amon_Ra recovery including myself. Heck if I can up to speed I may take a crack at it myself although I still have a lot to learn before I feel confident enough to work on that one. I am sure there are folks who are willing and able to take it on. Just give it time.
Ya I really wish AR recovery would come to are vibrants, only time will tell.
I feel that Amon's recovery was the best, I hope someone ports that to this phone
don't they all do the same thing?
I may put up a ubuntu VM for this. Im on a mac. So it makes it hard to use the rom kitchen and do things.
but, anyone on linux could port this. using the tools.
Love AR on my MT3G can't wait to get my Vibrant so would really love it if I could use the sameish recovery.
+1
Have it on my g1. Quick, simple and convenient.

I have Amon Ra Carebear Recovery on my MT3G Fender
I think we should hold him at gun point.
I'll be straight up honest here. I freaking BOUGHT clockwork mod recovery and it NEVER worked on my G1. So, yeah. Hate clockwork and very worried about having to use it as the sole recovery...

why the hell would you buy it? its free.
This is my first Android phone, and CWM Recovery has been working flawlessly for me.
I should research what AR recovery is
Nice way of reviving a thread from 2+ months ago....
And clockwork can be bought for premium features + supporting the dev
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I bought as well.
A bunch of the Android community has this idea in their heads that everything should be for free.
If I feel a dev deserves it for their app, I'll buy.
Back on topic tho... On my G1 I also always used AR recovery and loved it way more than the Clockwork I have to use now on my Vibrant. Tho I have to say that I've not experianced anything bad with it, I just was use to AR and loved it back in my G1 days
Is there anyone working on getting amon ra's recovery working on the epic?

I would love to see amon ra on the epic, I had it on my hero and I like it so much more than clockwork.

I'm the same way! Clockwork Recovery is fine and all, and it gets the job done well enough. But I'm only using it because its the only option available.
I swore by Amon_RA back with my Nexus. I LOVED the fact that people made themed/different colored versions of Amon_RA and it was just better formatted/layout/buttons then Clockwork.
I, too, would love an RA-Recovery as it is so much cleaner than clockwork.
Anyone know what would actually be involved in making this happen? I'm guessing a version from another Galaxy S would be a good start?
I know NOTHING about making this work...just curious if their is any kind of update? Devs anyone working on this? God I hope so

This has been answered a hundred times. We, over at ACS, initially attempted to make this happen. The port was above us as our devices are so different than any htc device. It essentially has to be rebuilt from source. We even attempted to get the creator involved in order to help. The problem we have is he lives in europe. Obviously with the epic being cdma, there is a problem. The device is not accessible to him. Amon_ra is more than likely not going to happen.
That's to bad too. Amon Ra is so much better then clockwork. But at least you guys tried. Thanks ACS
Nice 6 month old zombie thread.
i had clockwork mod but wanted to try amon ra so i flashed it and now cant get rid of it.. anyone know how?
you can use rom manager to flash the latest CWM recovery or if you have the recovery image file you can flash it via flash_image with adb or terminal emulator
the command would be something like
flash_image recovery filename.img
Keep Amon....there is NO good reason to use Clockworkmod.
IMO Amon is a better choice than CWM. I have seen lots of issues with CWM and Rom Manager while Amon RA has had fewer and seems to do a better job. If you are certain you want to switch, go here and follow the directions to get CWM 2.6.0.1

The only evidence I can provide is the number of times I had issues with installing roms and had major problems. As soon as I switched to AmonRa all the problems disappeared. Some say the AmonRa clears Dalvik and cache much better. Give it a try.... you can easily switch back and forth.

That's a good point. If you don't mind, I'll share a couple things from my limited experience:
1. Amon-Ra allows you to select which partitions to wipe, making flashing new roms much easier and more intuitive.
2. It allows you to select which partitions to include in nandroid backups as well
3. CWM is no longer backward compatible with older types of flash package scripts. I don't entirely understand this, but I needed to flash rooted OTA 3.70 a few times and had to downgrade my CWM.
Sadly, I'm currently unrooted because of a new phone and the stupid GB OTA update. My own stupid fault, but I'm jealous of any custom recovery at this point...

1) you can format any partition in CWM
2) you can choose advance restore when doing a nandroid restore
3) this is well explained in Koush's thread regarding amend vs edify scripting
i understand where you're coming from tho, & i'm sorry you have an unrooted device... i'm not sure how i'd handle that if it was me lol
however on the flipside
i was just vaguely making a point that perhaps all these people who claim Amon_ra is sooo much better are often times the same people who claim they've wiped cache/dalvik 18x & are still having problems.
i personally have no problem with either recovery, they both do exactly what they are supposed to. its quite disrespectful to Koush who is an awesome part of the whole picture. Without him supporting & creating CWM for the crazy amount of devices, where would we all be right now? Not to mention he's a huge part of cyanogemod & for everyone to say his recovery is garbage isn't kosher imo.
its personal preference & honestly none of this has anything to do with the OP & the question he had lol
i mean no hard feelings about anything i've said, so i hope nobody takes offense.

Sounds reasonable to me. I never figured out how to do those things with CWM, but I was new to rooting at the time and eventually switched to Amon-Ra
By the way, did the person who started this thread ever figure out how to get back to CWM? Doesn't CWM have PC36IMG.zip that you can download and allow to flash?
Only reason I ever switched to Amon's recovery is for the older script support, and really I don't even use that unless it's for a theme for a rom or something. I'm just too lazy to switch back to CWM lawlz.

No problem. I was just confused, lol.
Lots of other people have done that... I was "out of my mind" for a while, but it looks like I'll be able to root it again very soon!
It's Dominos Pizza vs. Pizza Hut. Everyone likes Pizza, some like Pizza Hut, most like Dominos. You can't fault either side, but you can't realistically just proclaim your preference is better either.
I used CWM for awhile, I like AR better. That's just me, and for some reason, most people agree. I really don't think it's a case of the blind following the blind.
Most of the heavy hitters use AR. If for no other reason, that's good enough for me.
I just rooted w/Captain_Throwback - Unrevoked version, and everything checks out.
I am now interested in trying out the various ROM's out there, and was just wondering am I just restricted to the ClockWorkMod development, or can I venture out into the unknown/related to ClockWorkMod development choices...???
Cwm is just one recovery. I personally use amon ra. Most roms are signed and can be flashed with both. Just a matter of preference really.

Signed or not doesn't matter with amonra. You can flash both. Its cwm that needed signed roms. Although that might have changed in the last two years since I've used cwm lol.

At OP, you said you used captain throwback method and unrevoked. I'm surprised captains method didn't include amonRA out of the box,...I know he strongly advises amon,... as do pretty much all of us on the Evo forum.
As to what you can flash, like THREESTRIPEBAND said, you can flash any rom in the Evo forum. I know I've looked at Sammy forums and was a bit confused because the rom title would specify it's a CWM ROM or Odin ROM, which I don't understand what your recovery has to do with your ROM, but it ain't like that here. (Maybe it's a kernel or signature issue when dealing with sammys ? )
Anyhow, you got tons of choices here. Happy flashing.

It does'nt matter if a rom or any other zipped file is signed or not, when you want to install it,the reason for signing is a digital signature a developer puts on his developement,so noone can edit it and say its theirs.

For me when I tried to do a nand restore and reboot my phone like usual it kept sending me to the bootloader. so I tried turning off the phone then turn it back on still sent me straight to boot loader. Flashed a rom rebooted and didn't get sent to boot loader..hmm

flashed this afternoon have been working fine for me for a few flash fixes and what not so far
I flashed this version over the old version and when i went to restore a rom,it sent me to the bootloader, then i tried it again,i got stuck in a bootloop, since im the kind of person that doesnt give up easy,i tried it again and it finally restored my rom,i booted back into recovery from the rom and the damned recovery went back to the old version, now how is that?Too weird,i think ill just stick with the older version for now.
Diablo, just a thought, doesn't the newer version of ra allow for backup of recovery? (I still use old ra 1.80). If so, did your nandroid contain recovery?

Yes and no.
I didn't post this on xda yet for a reason, so it would be good practice to ask the person doing the work if they want it shared broader first.
That being said, the issue with restoring has to do with the flash_image binary possible getting wiped if you're doing wiping before your restore. (<-- that's not the case)
If you just restore, it should work fine. I've pulled it offline for now until I get it fixed. Thanks. Also, if you want to help, please provide me some feedback on the rootz thread for now.
you guys should really be respectful to developers and not cross post stuff without even asking. sometimes there's a reason "why" they don't share here first. i think you just found out why in this case. is it really THAT hard to send a pm? it's not like you made the discovery of the year or something by doing this. instead you've caused people to probably have problems with their recovery that could have been avoided had you NOT put this thread on here and copied over smelkus zwiki link before HE was ready to do it himself. have fun.
