New D2 owner here....... - Droid 2 General

I'm a brand new D2 owner and got lucky and found this website and was wondering if anyone out here could give me some hints on new things with this phone. I'm really wanted to learn how to root it, but any hints or anything anyone could tell me would be a BIG BIG help

For an easy root, get z4root from the market. You don't need to flash roms or anything until you're read up and comfortable. Also try droidforums for specific help for some problems....lots of updates there.

z4root is the easiest way to go for root. You should also check out various tools and stuff on my website.
www.kimete.com
There's a boot animation changer thing, a script to root, a script to help you overclock your phone.
There's also my blog, kimete.com/blog, where you can check out my ramblings and stuff.
I also have this project I am working on.
www.kimete.com/andy

I'll check those sites out but I was told this site was actually a real good one.

Z4 root is the easiest way, I wold wait before you flash any ROM's and browse the forums here for information. The search tool helps greatly...

What is the major advantage of rooting your D2?

The root process for the D2 has really evolved quite a bit since this link. There are easier ways to go about it. Essentially that method, but with much fewer steps.

The major advatage to rooting the phone is being able to remove system apps that would otherwise take up resources. and being able to apply new themes and new features.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App

How do I learn about that stuff. I did put "Z4ROOT" on my phone but haven't used it any yet. I'm trying to learn more about this stuff before I do anything to my phone because I don't want to screw it up any.

Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY

## I will clean up the code, and UI this weekend: and for those with any doubts: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/1-click-eris-root-app-no-pc-required/
## To those tempted to redistribute my apps, or apps based on my work without permission. This will only result in me using a new obnoxious DRM system. Please stop it.
Preface, This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program.
This is a TeamAndIRC production. The source code is available on request, if good reason exists.
I got bored and whipped this up tonight with ECLIPS3. This will root your Droid Eris running 2.1 with 1 click.
If something doesn't work, don't freak just contact me. Tested working on latest RUU.
This does NOT erase anything off your phone. You can keep you data/apps with this root!
Step 1) download and install this apk
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/erisone010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0
Step 2) Run, read disclaimer, press button
Step 3) Reboot, once rebooted your phone should have Amon's recovery. Yay.
Step 4) Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip that is now on your SDCard, or the custom rom of your choice.
Step 5) Go into settings, and turn usb debugging on. After you have root, please uninstall this app.
Just that easy.
Please come chat with use at http://chat.andirc.net or irc.andirc.net #droideris if you have a separate IRC client.
Credit to:
Eclips3 for spending hours and hours and hours testing my crap. Without him this app wouldn't exist.
TopazAaron for the icon
wag3slav3 for the root method
Amon_RA for the recovery image
erisuser1 for the post that gave me the idea.
and to the authors of flash_image and superuser.apk.
This is 100% legit! Very easy to do. One click. If you cant click one button. You dont deserve root lol!

Very cool awesome work team!
Im already rooted but this should help quite a few who arnt/wouldn't be able to get adb setup or follow through etc.
Seriously, jcase & ECLIPS3, you guys are animals !
Thats awesome! if my eris ever craps out on me and i get a new one i will definitely use this.
Jcase and others; you are amazing
I'm confused about one thing. If it is a try before you buy app, and it is a one-click root app, then why would anyone pay for it? The majority of users only need to root once for the most part, so what's to say that people will download it, use it one time to root, and because they only need it for that one time operation, not donate at all? I can see a try before you buy for an application that can recieve daily use. Bravo nonetheless! You guys think of everything for the Eris!
Guess I will be trying this soon as VZW is sending me another refurb
thanks agin for all the work you and others put into the Eris community

Nice work. Will be rooting my wife's Eris tonight.

Not truly universal as 1.5 isn't supported, but your description does point that out. This is a minor quibble and more of a note for anyone else attempting this on 1.5.

[Q] Startup Customization

So coming from the winmo world and great things like sdconfig and XDA_UC i was hoping that there is something out there like this so i dont have to go and find all my .apk's again in the market and get everything resetup the way i like it. I am also open to the prospect of building roms but i searched and looked thru the development forum a bit and didn't see any sort of tips/tricks/guide. So am i lacking at searching??
First, rooting your phone helps a lot. Then once you've got root, go grab Titanium backup off the market. I reccomend purchasing the Pro key while you're at it. You'll be glad you did. These phones are rediculously easy to root and tweak to be exactly how you like it.

I've found that using titanium and also the clockwork backup (followed by advanced restore of just /data) makes switching roms so much easier with my Epic than it ever was with my winmo phone, so I wouldn't worry there.
With regard to developing, here are two threads that I've saved which have in them some good links:

thanks, i was using titanium backup with my xdandroid build on my tp2, but it always seemed to carry problems over with it. maybe i should forget my fears since this is real android now lol.
thanks again for the links

New Xoom User

Hey, I just picked up my Xoom from Futureshop yesterday. I am in Canada and it is the WiFi only version.
I see there are many threads on Rooting and all that good stuff. My issue like always is there is too much information. I can never find what I want, or be 100% sure it's what I need.
So my first question is, is there a point to rooting the Xoom right now? Are there any useful and good ROMs for it yet? What other reason should I do it, I have rooted and installed ROMs on my Desire for ever now and the only benefit I see is the ROMs and a couple apps, yet I think I am missing a point lol
Second, for my North American (Canadian) WiFi only Xoom, which rooting steps and files do I need/follow? Thanks
Thirdly, excluding the Google applications and Games (because I already have them) what are some apps that support tablets currently? Also, what cool things are you doing with your Xoom?
Thanks.

This thread is definitely in the wrong section!
But I'll answer the first question:
The main reason I rooted was to overclock to 1.5 GHz. I also did it because I know that eventually I'll want to try out a custom ROM or run some other SU apps somewhere down the road. I also wanted USB host capabilities. As far as I know though, there aren't any custom ROMs yet, but there is a custom kernel, Tiamat. I haven't tried it yet, because I've been content with the stock OC kernel.
Oh crap, yea I didn't notice I was still in this section. Sorry, please move MOD.
Thanks for the reply. Overclocking eh? Will that destroy my CPU/device quicker or any other bad side effects?
And link to do that with my version?
Moved to general.
Generally, 1.5 GHz seems to be tolerated very well by the majority of XOOMs. If you notice random pauses, lockups, or restarts, tone it down a little bit.
You will likely notice a little additional battery drain, but as long as you're not on "performance" governor in SetCPU, you'll be fine for the most part.

Screenshot ER is a good reason Lets you take screenshots (no kidding!) without adb. I also have some other apps that need root like Root explorer.
EDIT: You might also want to ask: Why should I NOT root? Sometimes it helps to see both sides but I haven't found any disadvantage.
Ok, so I found this thread which seems to be my model.

One Click Root
The is pretty much the easies way to root your xoom. A one click method, and also unroot it back to stock if anything need to be done, like take it for repair to motorola or the upgrade for lite. It works for both wifi only and 3G. Just make sure you click the correct method for your kind of device.
There is also videos out there on youtube and google with it being done, that's how I got mine done. And more of a visual guy.
Here is the link from here on XDA, good luck. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196
Here is a link to the video I use, these guys have videos on both rooting and unrooting, enjoy fellow Xoom. http://theunlockr.com/2011/03/30/how-to-root-the-motorola-xoom-wifi-or-3g-one-click-method/
Well there we go! lol
Thanks a bunch.
I assume once I am rooted I just install that SetCPU app and play with it?
Best reason to root? Ad-blocking hosts file!
same thing here...wifi only in canada. I used one-click root ... click ok like 15 times and you're done!
one click rooting, nice! I'm new to all this rooting stuff........so that might just push me over the edge!
Other than ad blocking, not really. I haven't root'd mine.
Sent from my Captivate
Yea the part that gets me is the ability to unroot and put back to stock, just in case I need my warranty.
yeah the ability to unroot is the best thing since the xoom. Lol. Cuz you can always go back to original. Just a side note be very careful with that setCPU' it can be useful, and hurtful.the xoom is fast already, but. I mean as other have said, it is safe to an extend, but I would keep it that hight. One becauxe of battery life, and two because it could become an issue. I think if it was totally safe to clock that might, motorola would have been the one to do so, and would have put this device out the as having a 1.5Ghz processor. So just be careful, and as soon as you notice anything not right or normal, head for the door. Lol. (Go back to stock)
A-men.

Do rooting enable the "Market Enabler" app?? and if the answer is yes, do this app fix the problem of the missing apps by hacking the market provider to [US] Verizon??????
It needs root and busybox. Basically, it lets you set your carrier to any carrier you like to fool the market.
It is often used by people who's countries don't provide market access.
Since I don't have a XOOM yet I can't vouch for its functionality on there but I don't see why it shouldn't work.

only 3g
I believe the above comment is correct. And as a side note I think the above app is only going to work with the 3G Xoom, not the Wifi only version. Because of the celluler radio. I have heard that both the wifi and 3g have a radio, because even the wifi version has a sim card slot, due to it being combine with the micro sd card. If this proof to be true, it could be a good deal for use with the wifi only. Cuz that means I pay $200 less. And if it is there, motorola will likely not make it active. But then once the codes are release, folk on XDA will make that dream a reality.
Don't count on that slot working on the wifi model. The important hardware like the radio will likely not he there.
The only reason the slot is there is because its combined with the SD slot and it would be costly and pointless for them to source an alternative socket just for the wifi model.

I had no success with both z4root and superoneclick (both exploits). My guess is that the exploits are fixed in this version of Android.
Gingerbread can be the problem with this apps.
We have to wait a little bit more.

I really really hope so. This device will be 'made or broken' by the community
whats the whole point of rooting as it is aside from stopping some of the pre-installed stuff?
At the moment, that's pretty much the whole point - just to kick some of the pre-installed junk off the device. Altho in time, it could also lead to some other things, like extended menus, options, themes and the like.
However, these things might or might not require an unlocked bootloader to function as well.
With the boot loader unlocked however, you can basically replace the whole System. Even going so far as to install a completely new System like Cyanogenmod, Meego, MIUI and so on.
i guess getting rid of timescape would be useful. any news on the NA version being stock android?
"Timescape" in this case is pretty much only the launcher. Everything else is very much stock. So I don't think we really need to get rid of it. I'd just like to kick some stuff from the internal memory to make space for other things. I for example don't need Fifa or Sims. I never play those games.
I would love to be able to stop all random **** from connecting to the internet. Also timescape and things like mediaserver and postcard i would like to get rid off. Clean install.

To get more control over your device, gain acces to hidden files, change boot anim etc (don't know the file structere of xperia play). Get adfree working so you'll get rid of the advertizing in apps and browser, screenshot apps etc. Push apk's to /system/apps with adb shell (some won't install with the native manager, but will this way (modded apk's)). Overclock without flashing (did this to begin with on my DHD before i got the bootloader unlucked and installed a recovery, so i could flash a new kernel with oc options).
Lots of reasons mate

There is currently no exploit out to root the Sprint Tab on 2.3.4
Super One Click Root will not work, even with GingerBreak, nor will z4root
Looking forward to some sweet progress tho!

Because the topic has been moved
The only thing I was using root for was to remove the annoying startup and shutdown videos. There aren't any great ROMs for the Sprint Tab, and the OEM build is pretty solid, so I don't think root access is a big deal for many users at the moment.

I have not tried it just came accross it. I only got Gingerbread running a few minutes ago.\
Edit: This is for Android 2.3.3 and NOT the current Sprint update of 2.3.4.
I'm hoping for a custom kernel with root and CWM soon, and I'd help expedite the process if someone needs a tester. Or even someone to do all the work (as long as there's some direction, i know i could manage to piece things together and compile it, i just suck with actual pure coding)

I think it doesn't help that sprint's tab isn't very popular and doesn't have the developers like the GSM does. I know nothing about it but I would guess that even though people are developing roms, that finding a root exploit is a completely different animal. I'm guessing since 2.3.4 isn't on a lot of phones yet doesn't help.

Sorry...I didn't mean to bother you. I've been reading some of the GB threads over the past couple days and it seemed to me that most people weren't that bummed about losing root for the time being, myself included. The biggest thing I miss is tethering from the phone.

I'm going back to 2.2 until root is achieved for 2.3.4. I mainly got the tab so I could tether on the go. Having to find wifi while out and about when you want to get online is difficult sometimes. If you're lucky to find open and free, many times they have ports blocked. You can only 80 or 8080. I've got wd live and roku and boxee for Netflix and crap.
im definately frustrated i dont have root. i want to put some apks in system/app and cant through crippled file explorers. also, i want to start pushing out some themes. the SGT has gotten little love and that needs to change. i was holding out on FROYO cause i knew it wouldnt be long till everyone was on GB. ive been talking with DRockstar about getting a cwm put together specifically for the SGT and that should get things rolling.
please give me your feedback.

Not at all. Those are great tools and I will be running them again on my Tab once an exploit is discovered. But for the time being, not having those tools doesn't really affect my day to day use of the device much. That includes listening to Slacker, using Facebook, email, browsing, Qik video chat, Netflix, etc. There are a lot of people like me who like the power that comes with root, but not having it for a few weeks or even months isn't going to kill them.

One of the first things I did with root was adjust the pixel density in the build.prop file so the icons didn't look so cartoonish. If the GB update breaks that and I can't fix it, then it might kills me. With the larger icons, the Zeam launcher doesn't even look right at all.
