the reason to root the nexi

So, for my sake, and others considering to take the plunge, what are some real benefits of rooting? I have had my nexi for 6 days now and I need a real good reason to root, because as we all know, it voids the warranty. Agree?

Custom ROMs, certain apps that require root/su access, and custom themes. Whether those are real good reasons or not is up to you.

just a quick question, ive read the tut on rooting the nexus, what i do not understand is can u only do the root and not the rest of it, as it says to install this image then recovery, as i do not want to put custom roms on, is this possible,
sorry new to android, been windows mobile for so long,

Alright so another question for you my good man, how easy is it to achieve root? Because I literally had the hardest time on my magic. It got me so heated that I never tried again. And now in the tutorial for rooting it makes it sound amazingly easy.

unlocking the bootloader does NOT give you root, it simply ALLOWS you to root. Root access is part of a custom ROM (a modified kernel I beleive). You can leave the stock ROM on and just install the superboot image on top of it to get root access (see modaco's thread in development section).

The easiest way would be to unlock the boot loader, then flash Armon's recovery, then flash Modaco's rooted stock ROM(he made a rooted version of the stock updated ROM, no changes other than the root).
It should take about 10 minutes total if you are experienced and bang it out... being new, probably take about 20-30 minutes since I am sure you will be double checking along the way.

If you already have the full update flashed, you don't need to do the radio again.

wow. thak you. i'll have to dive into this a little bit later. hopefully it'll be easy.

by the way... do you have to have the Android SDK installed for this to work? because it says to type different commands in, but into what terminal..?

zach, I was in the same boat as you, and I was looking for an ultra-noob friendly walkthru for rooting. I found youtube to be the best source, as you can see the process on someone else's phone first. I was shaky reading even the walkthru on xda forums, but youtube cleared it up. Just google "nexus one root" and you'll get a boat-load of videos.

Oh man I didn't even think of that. Thank you so much for the idea.

The big reason I needed to root the phone was TETHERED access! Both wired and wireless.
I travel a bit, and more often than not I cannot get a decent WIFI signal, or I am in someplace that requires me to pay for access (like a hotel). Almost EVERY hotel in Las Vegas for instance requires you to pay for internet access.... but with tethering... I am golden and surfing the web for free.
I also use SetCPU for profiles for when my phone is sleeping, charging, etc. I can usually squeeze out a little more life in the battery this way. Also... CacheMate is a great tool (especially if you are not using Apps2SD) for recovering extra space.... it's a "root" required app.
If you are a App-o-holic.... and NEED the extra room on your phone... you will want or need Apps 2 SD... .. and will need to have root access to do this.
Hope these suggestions help.

Some of my favorite things about rooting are Cyan's High-Mem Kernel, doubling the memory available, Tethering, Themeing(I can't stand the standard notification bar), and setting my clock speed to stay between 998 and 768. If you think the Nexus is fast now wait till you get High-Mem and change your CPU Clock settings.

Can't decide if I should root my atrix or not

Hi there,
I am debating if I should root my Atrix or not. I checked out few posts and they seem a bit complecated. Also, I found this article saying carriers will track down rooted devices and restricted services.
By the way, can I still install some of Motorola o/s for dock stations? I have a multimedia and a car dock.

No one will track you down and restrict you. And it's very safe to root.
Just for apps like Adfree which kills advertisements, this is reason enough for me to root! Not to mention super helpful things like customer recovery to back things up, the ability to sideload (install non-market apps if you're on AT&T), etc.
Android is quite open source but rooting opens up another amazing realm of extremely essential apps.

I will take your word for it then! Just kidding. Would you be able recommend any good root techniques on the forum? I think there are few methods and am not sure which one is the best.

I say root it. I rooted mine and i love it this way. I had mine for only two days before I rooted it. I was a little nervous at first and felt that i really didnt want to do it, but the benefits were too great with a rooted phone than without a rooted phone. I am on the AT&T network and i hate it when someone tries to tell me what I can't do with something I purchased. Trust me when i say that you are going to want software that is not in the market as well.
And... I really, really love the fact that I don't need to be docked to use my WebTop.
Again... i say root it.

Gladroot. It's the easiest and can enable tethering and sideloading as well.
You must be on 1.2.6 to root. You can run their first script which will root it. You can then do AT&T's download and run their second script which will root that too. BOOM!
It shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes.

Well... there was that one thing where AT&T is supposedly locking out, or might be locking out phones that have been determined to be rooted. But the fact of the matter is, if they do that with absolutely no reason other than the phone being rooted, i'm sure you'll see a class action lawsuit about it since rooting/jailbreaking a cell phone is legal now according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The only reason i can see them disabling service is if you root it, and use one of the alternate methods of tethering, and wind up using a TON of bandwidth.... well over what anyone would even remotely do on just the phone if they didn't have any tethering package or way to tether. Then you'd basically be using their networks in a way that could be deemed illegal. But there's no issue with just rooting it to use applications not approved by the carrier or phone manufacturer.

Would you want to be admin on your own computer?

I think rooting is a must. The use of sideloading alone is worth it. I would hate to not be able to use the Amazon Appstore, Ive really come to like it.
One thing to mention though. The Blockbuster app detects root and wont allow content to be purchased because of DRM concerns. I dont know if this will be a problem with future apps.

About to get an atrix, Any suggestions?

i'm probably going to get an atrix tomorrow and wondering what the first thing i should do as soon as i open the box. i'm not a 100% android noob. i have rooted and flashed my galaxy tab and I9000m and understand the basics. but i have a few questions like
- Can i Disable Moto Blur or should i?
- is rooting the same as most other devices, debugging mode/super one click etc?
- safe apps to freeze with titanium backup(list or link)
- is 2.3 coming or is it already out?
- is it worth it or should i wait?
- other personal problems or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
- not too important but how are the stock headphones? is there a remote similar to HTC and Iphone or no?
- and call quality through them if known would be nice too.
- and can i use any 3.5mm headphone or is it specific to moto?

I can answer some of these but not all as I'm sort of a n00b.
Is rooting the same? Yes, pretty much.
2.3 out? It's not out yet, but in a few weeks.
Is it worth it? Well I am an ex iPhone 4 user, and it's pretty worth it! I am going to be honest though, without having a case, its a you know what to not get scratches even when taking good care of it. Also the build feels cheap if your coming from a more solid phone. this phone is ALL plastic, but its the stuff inside that counts. Also just miss my iPhone 4, lol. it's all i was used to for 3 years.
Personal problems, some apps like facebook dont check in properly, more than 70 percent of the time it doesn't work. GPS is among the best i've seen however, locking on almost instantly. umm camera quality sucks, but the phone is pretty consistent with flash and plays pretty awesome . fast fast fast phone. it has its quirks though, however if your an android user and know what its about, it's probably the phone for you!

Rooting requires downgrading firmware then upgrading to maintain root, iirc.
GB will be released soon no eta though.
Bootloader bypass is being worked on as we speak, 2nd init is working but needs roms.
Right now is the time to get this phone, with the devs working on so many solutions to Moto and Att's lockdown the potential of this phone is incredible.
Also with Netflix coming soon and the qhd display it will get even better, however the yellows on this display seem a little greenish, and has miffed a few people, but I really don't pay much attention to it.
The only problems I have seen is random reboots, all from apps not optimized for this phone.
As far as camera quality, IMO it is the best camera quality I have seen on a phone and that include the iphone4, video is great, the only thing it lacks is stock camera customizing i.e. lens effects, more color options ect., easily rectified with apps.
This is the best phone I have ever owned and would recommend it to anyone looking for something for in a phone.

1. Yes you can, prob comes down to personal preference.
2. No. I am very happy with the GladRoot method. Do this BEFORE you accept the OTAs.
3. I dont know of a link or have a list sorry.
4. Its coming. Dont listen to everybody anybody in the forum who thinks a few peoples speculations are fact. The fact is Moto has NOT given a date for GB on the Atrix.
5. Its worth it!! Join the party.

Unfortunately u cant bcoz its more than a skin.. its entrenched within the OS. However freezing apps like Social Networking which are from Motoblur and installing a Lanucher gets rid of most of the problem. You can definitely root. Gingerbreak works flawlessly.

-You can disable motoblur by installing a pseudo-rom (i suggest gingerblur) or by using third party launcher (i.e. launcher pro) and freezing motoblur through titanium backup.
-Rooting actually is kinda the same(ish). You don't have to root before you ota. You can ota to 1.83 and use gingerbreak to root it. Use this link to install gingerbreak on you phone, http://atrix4ghacks.com/atrix-4g-hacks/how-to-root-atrix-4g/ then run gingerbreak from phone to one click root.
-Gingerbread is coming out in like a few weeks. You can check out the gb preview thread in android dev.
-its worth it
-um it doesn't come with stock headphones, but they sound just as good as iphone with any headphoens.
-call quality is good
one issue it has is that it kinda gets warm (or hot if using for a long time), especially around the bottom portion. oddly it doesn't get nearly as hot on the lower back of the phone as it does at the lower front glass of the phone.

I wouldn't do anything other than root and enable sideloading. Be sure to get the Amazon marketplace for the one free app a day. Most are garbage, but some (like the Nuance FlexT9 keyboard are great. I think Motoblur is fine, despite what many say. Decide for yourself if it really doesn't fit with how you use it. I just chose not to add my facebook account. It works fine in my experience.

There is currently no exploit out to root the Sprint Tab on 2.3.4
Super One Click Root will not work, even with GingerBreak, nor will z4root

The phone call function is even more important for me, but seems no replacement of original phone*.apk from other devices is available now.

The only thing I was using root for was to remove the annoying startup and shutdown videos. There aren't any great ROMs for the Sprint Tab, and the OEM build is pretty solid, so I don't think root access is a big deal for many users at the moment.

Edit: This is for Android 2.3.3 and NOT the current Sprint update of 2.3.4.

I'm hoping for a custom kernel with root and CWM soon, and I'd help expedite the process if someone needs a tester. Or even someone to do all the work (as long as there's some direction, i know i could manage to piece things together and compile it, i just suck with actual pure coding)

I think it doesn't help that sprint's tab isn't very popular and doesn't have the developers like the GSM does. I know nothing about it but I would guess that even though people are developing roms, that finding a root exploit is a completely different animal. I'm guessing since 2.3.4 isn't on a lot of phones yet doesn't help.

Sorry...I didn't mean to bother you. I've been reading some of the GB threads over the past couple days and it seemed to me that most people weren't that bummed about losing root for the time being, myself included. I could definitely be wrong, which is why I said "I don't think". Again, sorry if I bothered you with the post.

The biggest thing I miss is tethering from the phone.

I'm going back to 2.2 until root is achieved for 2.3.4. I mainly got the tab so I could tether on the go. Having to find wifi while out and about when you want to get online is difficult sometimes. If you're lucky to find open and free, many times they have ports blocked. You can only 80 or 8080. I've got wd live and roku and boxee for Netflix and crap.

im definately frustrated i dont have root. i want to put some apks in system/app and cant through crippled file explorers. also, i want to start pushing out some themes. the SGT has gotten little love and that needs to change. i was holding out on FROYO cause i knew it wouldnt be long till everyone was on GB. ive been talking with DRockstar about getting a cwm put together specifically for the SGT and that should get things rolling.
please give me your feedback.

Not at all. Those are great tools and I will be running them again on my Tab once an exploit is discovered. But for the time being, not having those tools doesn't really affect my day to day use of the device much. That includes listening to Slacker, using Facebook, email, browsing, Qik video chat, Netflix, etc. There are a lot of people like me who like the power that comes with root, but not having it for a few weeks or even months isn't going to kill them.

One of the first things I did with root was adjust the pixel density in the build.prop file so the icons didn't look so cartoonish. If the GB update breaks that and I can't fix it, then it might kills me. With the larger icons, the Zeam launcher doesn't even look right at all.

I just got an Iconia for Christmas and love it to death. Seems like the perfect tablet for me.
I see a lot of stuff on this forum about rooting however and I'm curious what the practical benafits to rooting are. I origionally had planned to route the iconia because I heard it didn't support netflix but the netflix app seems to work fine on my device so I'm happy there.
There were a lot of things that made me want to route my phone (Samsung Epic) such as the desire to tether other devices to it and get rid of all the Samsung, pre-istalled BS and Touch Wiz which made the phone run slowly. Those considerations don't exist here as Honey Comb seems to be plenty fast and there doesn't appear to be many BS additions from Acer.
So, with all that in mind, what exactly does one gain practically by rooting the Iconia?

I rooted my a500 so I could connect to ad-hoc networks and use ntfs drives.

It is a very personal question in the sense that there is no one, single reason why people root. I for example rooted because I needed ad-hoc wifi, otherwise I could have well survived without rooting. Once I did root my tablet I did of course install CWM so I can take a full backup of the whole thing -- better safe than sorry, as they say -- and tried a few different ROMs too, though I then went back to stock as it was the least buggy.
Just ask yourself: is there anything I need root for?

I think I root for a few different reasons.
ClockworkMod for nandroid backup and other things.
Titanium backup for app/data backup and easy bloat remove/restore.
AdFree
overclocking and other performance adjustments
Cifs/Samba support - I have 3 androids with share links on my PC desktop for drag-n-drop file copying without wires.
Root explorer of course.
Drive mount seems to need it.
Oh and theming - I like to theme and make small code changes.

Essentially, if you need to ask that question, you don't need to root your device....
You'll know when you need to...

What does that have to do with the fact that I found all the custom ROMs I tried buggy?

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I was all set to root because I heard that Netflix wasn't functioning on the Iconia and rooting was easy.
Now I find that Netflix works fine and apparently I shouldn't have let my tablet update when I first turned it on.
Guess I'll leave my Iconia alone for now.

Did you try to get help with the buggies? People are pretty helpful around here. I'm running Honeylicious Icy something and it seems to be perfect so far.

One word really - titanium - there is just no better way to make a full backup.
But having said that - with all the rumors of ICS withing maybe weeks - rooting may not be such a good idea right now ... most OTA updates do tend to have issues with rooted devices.

i root for:
cwm recovery image
optimized roms
titanium backup (altho my stuff is mostly cloud so this is just a bonus)
while i understand why people say only root if you have to, if you've made your way here i'd suggest you do it anyways if only for the clockworkmod recovery while more or less makes your system unbrickable. when you start looking at custom icon packs, gps, wifi and lag fixes, optimized filesystems etc. it gets a lot more appealing.
thanks to those that tirelessly work out the kinks in the process for us.

Havent seen a reason yet to root my A500 as it does everything I want, possibly if I got a wildhair and wanted to install a custom rom. On the other hand I bought a Kindle Fire and I rooted it and had a custom rom installed withing a week, primarily to make it more like my Acer.

Unbrickable? I keep seeing threads of peopleeho havd just bricked their systems while trying to foot. It's the main reason why imhesitant to root.

I just got mine and always thought I would root it, but I don't see the point yet.
I rooted my Evo so that I can remove bloat, increase battery life, and most important wirelessly tether with my tablet.
The battery life on my tablet seems amazing, honeycomb seems fast and the bloat doesn't bother me as much.

i rooted and installed thors rom, its awesome.
No real reason either, I just know from past experience every device is made more enjoyable with the right rom.
Plus with ics coming soon ill have to be able to backup my data to survive the upgrade.

I find out About Rooting (or unlocking) before I buy any device
#1 Freezing Apps (like Deleting, only safer -Titanium Backup)
#2 OverClocking to 1.5 Ghz and still being stable (up to 1.64)
#3 Under clock (216,245 mhz) (saving battery life)
#4 fun to be "ABLE" to tweak out something.
#5 Example : -a new trick to get better Wi-Fi or 3G Signal, or better GPS (you'll need ROOT to edit system data)
KNOWING that you can always get back to stock in under 5-7 min (if you have to bring in device)
Leaves you a better question.

Well bricking your tablet is normal when you try to foot it.
Sorry just made my laugh.
Maybe you should use auto correction.
Or maybe I should keep trying to foot it and see how many attempts I need to brick it.

I just got this tablet for Xmas, well the Packard bell one but from my understanding there the same. I still need to root mine. I've heard that you can connect a ps3 control if your rooted. Is this the only requirement?

With that said..
I think if you have to ask WHY ROOT your device.. My Question is what Does your device not do that you need? And will rooting the device solve this for you..
its risk vs benefits . the oldest Android Question in the book .. Should i foot.. or should i not foot...
