Has anyone tried firefox on the D2. I used on my vibrant and evo and it was a mess, but i see with the new beta it takes up less memory. Im just curious if anyone has used it on D2 and how it performs?.
firefox on my d2 was horrible and didnt have flash support. lag lag crash crash and even when it was my default explorer, the webkit always opened when i hit a link.

Sounds about right. It made my evo seem like a super-turd lol.
Well, guess ill wait to run it. The idea is great, execution just not right yet. Thanks for the reply
Shot from my level 60 crossbow of awesomness!
I've been running it for a couple weeks and it's ok. A bit laggy. Like the builtin sync.

I wanted to just check out the "improvements" made. I cant type numbers or capitals with the physical keyboard.
OMG
What a disgrace! Mozilla better fix this thing. Nothing works and i cant get it to anything without it crashin
I'm not sure what you are seeing, but I have no issue typing in firefox. Caps, numbers, symbols...
Broken flash and laggy performance are my only issues. Have been using as my default since last release hit.

I cant even sign into facebook, it crashes and if it doesnt crash it says connection was interupted. Im uninstalling, same as ive done on my evo and vibrant. Its got a ways to go before i can use it daily
Runs OK. I like it mainly for access to my bookmarks on my laptop. I use Dolphin as my main browser, although I am checking out a few others. I can't get Firefox to run on my tablet; the window is dim and the keyboard will not work.

It's still in Beta so not everything is going to work right. It's being tested and improved. So if everything doesn't work that you need just stick to the stock browser until a Final version is released.
I don't care for it, I'll stick to the stock browser...

I have the Sprint Hero, and used the stock rom for 5 months,
DC 2.05
DC 2.07
and currently fresh rom 2.0, The keyboard lag is rediculous on this thing, and one of the worst keyboards I have ever used. The lag makes it unusable..
I have installed the 2.1 HTC IME keyboard, the 1.5 stock HTC KB, and the same one on the droid eris. Nothing helps.
The droid eris' keyboard works perfectly for some reason and for the hero, it sucks. It seems everyone will comment saying
"Mine doesn't lag"
If someone cannot come up with a possible fix, can someone please explain why their is lag on the HTC KB.
you might consider using xdas
lotsa options :-D
not sure if its more lightweight and less lag, and i hate to say it but...mine doesnt lag and i have no explanation
try regawmods rom. he has a black keyboard, its pimp. i found that while i dont experience LAG per-say, when compared to his, his was much more RESPONSIVE.
I'll join in. Mine has lag and I couldn't figure it out. I just installed Fresh 2.0d today to see if it's different. So far... no.
I agree with you, mine did lag. I'm using Sushi rom and the black htc keyboard is very responsive. Also, the AOSP keyboard never lagged one bit. I love it.
I'm running Fresh 2.0d. I'm also using Better Keyboard from the market...and I have no lag. The only time I will notice lag is if the phone is recieving a call while I'm texting, or if an app is installing after download. Aside from that...I'm not noticing a lag.
I also keep my phone as clean as possible. I clear text messages once a week, often clear my call log, ect.
Its mostly the messaging app i've discovered. Try pushing this to your phone. It will give you the stock android 2.1 messaging app which I love, and it is much faster
I started using the beta from swift key and it works nice.
i have to agree. the keyboard lag pisses me off. i can't take it. turning off vibration helps which i dont mind and turning off sound helps but i do mind that. i would really like sound on this.
The 2.1 IME keyboards and the XDA keyboard both lagged for me. Luckily I only have to deal with it long enough to install Estrong's file explorer so I can slap Swype back on. I don't have any lag in Swype.
You could try the non-haptic keyboard here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660506
For me it's not just text messages. It's everywhere on the phone. I will be in the web browser and typing in an address and i will take the e and it sits for a sec then a 3 shows up. Or, I will type and it will pop in the letter, but I can't hit another letter for another second or 2. 1.5 wasn't like this, but I can deal.
Does the better keyboard from the market have the voice to text option? I've been using that a lot lately.

I have the HTC Mms .apk that came with Fresh 2.0, but I am a noob, when it comes to the adb stuff, could you please or someone explain how to install the stock 2.1 Mms.apk , I will give it a shot and hope it works.
I hate to say this, but the one thing the iPhone has over this is the KB. I am not an apple fanboy, I prefer android. But the KB lag makes the phones only input method virtually unusable.
1.5 was like this also. everything i tried has a keyboard lag. better keyboard is ok but it lags also.
every keyboard lags for some reason.

the stock keyboard lags also. don't even bother but it is close to better keyboard in performance. i wish there was a way to boost protity on the keyboard apps.

I dont think increasing the priority will help, but download Auto Memory Manager from the market.. Go to running processes, long hold it, and increase the priority or just say never kill, gives it the highest.

I turned off Vibrate when typing and I don't lag one bit, prior to doing that I lagged a ton.

Yes........
I have also experienced EXTREME lag in most of the 2.1 roms out right now. Esp. DC and Fresh. Turned off vibrations, turned off sound, installed every keyboard I could find including AOSP and it didn't help. The lag was all over the place too just like others reported - not just in text messages or email.
Then I found a fix...
A rom without Sense. So far it's the only thing that has worked for me (other than reverting back to a 1.5 rom - yuck). Ic3 and MatrixROM both have 0 lag and run beautifully for me. Haven't tried the newer Sense-less roms yet.
Hope this helps!
I'm having a problem with the web browser.
Basically it keeps closing when I click on a link. Example, right here on the XDA forum when I click on one of the threads the web browser just shuts down & returns to the home screen. I had it just a day & took it back to the shop & they swapped for a brand new one.
Got home tried the web browser & it did exactly the same. I've not loaded any apps its straight out of the box, set up wifi & fire up the web browser.
Also I changed the UA string to desktop but it doesn't work either. Got no problems with my HTC Desire or the Dell Streak.
Any others having the same problem. Looks like I might have to return it again tomorrow.
I have experienced this too a couple of times. I found deleting cache data and cookies then also disabling plugins in browser settings seemed to fix this. Not a major issue.

Same here.
Strangely enough it only happened here at xda-devs but doing as you say cleared the issue and it's been right as rain ever since.
What does disabling plugins do? Does it stop flash from working? And how about the UA string, why won't it stay in desktop mode?
Thanks
As far as i can tell disabling plugins doesn't appear to do very much. I noticed YouTube videos will stop playing in the web browser (but will play in YouTube app perfectly fine) and that's about all. Flash support in this version of the browser is so minimal that it is barely worth having or switching on.
I have no idea about the UA string.
i had that problem on a nexus turned off my locations by wifi in settings and worked fine.
OK I've returned the phone for full refund at the shop I bought it from. I'm going to give the Galaxy S a final chance though as I will buy another from a different shop. I'm thinking it could be due to fact that the previous shop stock was from a dodgy batch of phones.
I think you'll be disappointed, sounds more like a software issue than a hardware one and I cant believe a batch of phones had a software flash go wrong like that. What id like to know is if this is just a Galaxy S thing or not? As I thought it was the same browser on all eclair phones.
I have a HTC Desire aswell. The web browser on the Desire doesn't have any of the issues I'm seeing with the Galaxy S. The problem I have with the Desire though is the external speaker volume is too low & tinny, but most significant is the pink tint when on the lowest brightness setting (I use the phone a lot in dark conditions). In saying that I noticed that the Galaxy lowest brightness setting is still much brighter than the Desire.

In what way?
I'm using it over the default browser and love it.
Ok, my browser (both the default one and Dolphin HD) shuts down randomly back to the main screen. Usually it's preceded by a single vibration, followed by three quick vibrations before it happens. This happens regardless of what website I am on.
I didn't have this issue at all on 2.1, and to be honest I really wish I hadn't bothered updating the phone as sites loaded and ran quicker on 2.1. Wondering if you guys have any ideas.

The vibration pattern you mention are indicative to a Force Close procedure.
Clearly something is interfering with the Internet App.
What happens after a reboot?
It's the same after a reboot. I rebooted it this morning before coming into work. Later in the morning I was on the internet on my phone and the same thing happened.
edit: I upgraded via the reg-hack to force Kies to give me the update. The JPM firmware is onlly for nordic regions, I'm wondering if maybe the proper European firmware will solve the problem...

I would say it looks quite good that you have a problem with the ROM.
I would put the correct ROM on your SGS and if Kies is problematic use Odin.
There is a great information link on how to use Odin to upgrade a ROM at How to use Odin to Upgrade the SGS to Froyo.
I used it and it worked a breeze.

Dolphin, skyfire (i really hate this over hyped crappy product) uses stock browser engine. So, on froyo they perform as the default browser. Browser on froyo sucks badly. I browse quite often and got a few fc (vibrates.. phone unusable for seconds, that happen when an app FC in official froyo) or simply self close. Plus how much resources eats (cpu + mem).. simply pathetic. Eclair browser performance was way better..

That's just your opinion and you are quite entitled to it especially if you are experiencing the problems you mention.
Mine however performs without a hitch. It's quick, reliable and does exactly that as I ask of it.
I used to be able to open 8 tabs of mixed web pages (blogs, news, Facebook, etc) and could queue them all up, read them one by one, and close out & switch to the next tab when I'm finished with one.
I used to be able to do this without any slow downs or reloading of each page when I switch to it. In addition, my phone would not become bogged down.
NOW when I do this, I have to wait for the page to reload when I switch to it. This only happens when I have over 2 or 3 tabs going at once and even then, only when the webpages are relatively content-heavy.
Ok, ready for the b*tching? This is AWFULLY PAINFUL when I've queued these pages up right before entering a no-service area like a tunnel or the subway. My ancient G1 used to behave this way but I always thought that was because it had half the RAM of this phone, so it did that to free up memory for other running processes/headroom.
This is by far the biggest disappointment of the JI6 update and I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or can suggest a fix.
Note, my phone is bone stock and one of the reasons I loved it so much was the browser performance - now, the browser performs horribly.

I've tried other browsers in the past, but was always happiest with the stock browser.
Regardless, I want to know what happened to the memory management after the update. It would never attempt to reload pages if I had multiple tabs going but now it does.
What I meant was, have you tested to see if other browsers are behaving the same way as the stock browser after you updated to JI6?

No, I haven't, but I dont specifically know how they performed before the update with regards to multiple tabs and page reloading, so it wouldn't tell me much about what the update did.

Maybe not, but if they behave better than the stock browser does now that you've updated, that's what counts, right?
Well, I just opened up 8 tabs of different websites and was able to switch between them with no problem at all. Nothing had to reload for me. On stock browser with JI6.

I have tried clearing the browser cache, tried other browsers, kill the native task manager app, tried stock froyo, Bionix V, Ginger Clone and Axura, and the browser always behaves the same way. If you switch to another app, when you come back to the browser, it starts to reload all pages (very annoying). It feels like I'm back using the mytouch 3g.
Back when the Vibrant (and the galaxy family) first came out, this didn't happened. 8 tabs (I could live with 4) that were always there waiting in the same line where you left off.
Any ideas
I updated my phone yesterday using the update.zip method via the SD card and I must say I am very annoyed with what it's done to my great phone.
Everything on my phone is now super-laggy and it's driving me crazy. I could deal with this issue if it was isolated to one issue but everything is SLOW:
Screen Rotation is slow and sometimes the wrong layout, wtf?
Power button is slow to respond on wake, about 2 seconds.
SMS list takes a few seconds to populate, new msgs just sit there with a blank screen.
Navigation through the menu's is also slow and laggy.
I've wiped my phone after the initial upgrade and still it doesn't improve the issues I'm having. I haven't checked out the GPS or other features yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they had issues too.
Major thumbs down. With the constant Froyo talk around here you'd think something miraculous was being released, what a pile of ****.
I don't have any of those issues. Did you wipe before you installed? I noticed that when I installed it didn't touch my /data partition, once I saw that I went bck and did it again.

My suggestion would be to use the rooted with clockwark tar. I was having some strange issues to after doing a .zip update and flashing the modem through Odin. Upon an entirely clean install from Odin it seems much better and my GPS came back.
There ARE a lot of quirks with Froyo. For one, the screen rotation is slow. Also, the browser has checkerboards all over the place.
With the browser, if you want the text to reflow, you have to pinch to zoom in to your desired size and then double tap the screen for the text to reflow and fit the screen. I kind of like that feature myself, but it took me a while to figure it out.
Why are people still using the stock browser anyway when there are better alternatives out there? I use dolphin ever since I had my moment running 1.5.
As far as the rotation, I have no issues with that anymore with DK17 or DK28
I flashed my phone with a zip and it had issues with browser checkers and slow rotation. I flashed my sister's with the full .tar from briefmobile. Hers doesn't have these issue.

Dolphin is horrendous looking and it takes up half of the screen with its useless junk UI. Stock browser destroys Dolphin.
My point is there are other options then the stock browser, which browser you use is a matter of opinion

Flashed rom
wiped 3x, wiped cache, and dalvik.
Flashed rom again.
I use Dolphin HD and its the best i've used imo. Easy swipe for bookmarks, make it fullscreen if you don't like extra "junk ui". Tabs, ability to download audio from streams, skins and addons, you really can't complain. I've noticed the stock broswer doesn't let u change the uAstring?
So..
I just slid my Epic into my $40 SAMSUNG Multimedia dock looking forward to rocking some tunes out on the home stereo using the line out they told us on that little peice of paper in the packaging would work when Froyo is released.
Color me SHOCKED when I hit the play button and music played... Through the phone speaker and not the line out.

Agree i too using Opera Mobile since it can download anything.
Only negative is no Flash in Opera yet.
It's because that Google hasn't open the Android 3.0 source code.
but it seems that Opera Mobile support HTML5.
Yeah, the update gave me problems, it is sporadic and hard to track down. When it occurs the pages fail to load properly, and I have to force the program stopped (application manager or task manager) to restore it to a functional state.
But, when it is working, it is a very nice update...
Same for me...I tried the Dolphin beta and had all sorts of issues where the pages wouldn't load any more. I uninstalled it and went back to the stock browser, which is working pretty well since the update. The previous Dolphin HD version was awesome.
Yesterday I installed the newest released version of Dolphin HD and am sharing it's use with the stock browser. It seems to be working okay, but I haven't done much surfing in the last day or so.
Update
Go the Dolphin home page and under the goole search bar you will see "page loading disturbing you now?". It appears this issue may have been addressed with a new beta. It has worked for me but I have only been using it for a short while.
