[Q] how do i fully brick my epic? - Epic 4G General

i got a replacement coming i told them i dropped it and it wot come back on... i was stuck in download mode and tried odin on my win7 and a friends xp pc for hours and gave up and payed the 120 bucks for another epic overnight... bad thing is i went to my other friends house and odin worked on his xp pc....i dont want to smash it but i need it to not come on again...

Odin a tar for a different galaxy s phone. Or flash a zip through clockwork from another phone. Or halfway through odin unplug the phone.

There are instructions you can follow when you get your replacement also call and tell them and send it back in the package they give you
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

but 120 isnt refundable right?

Why the hell would you go through insurance for a bricked phone anyways? The ONLY reason you go through Asurion is for complete board destruction (three or more pieces) liquid damage, fire damage, loss or theft. The Sprint store handles EVERYTHING else for free.
As for bricking your phone, Asurion couldn't give two ****s either way. You paid, they sent you a phone. You could give it a toilet dunk for all they care.

i didnt think they would since i voided the warranty... glad i know now for next time

two probs with phone

My phone was rooted and running a lag fix and was working fine untill i saw a cool theme that i wanted. I tried to flash it but it bricked my phone enstead. I was able to get it back buy following some instructions using odin. I got it back but without avitar, sims, and media hub. Now it also restarts over and over when i have my wifi on. I turn wifi off and it stays on. Is there a fix for what is going on? and is there any way i can get back avitar and the media hub. If not im going to take the phone back. Its not rooted anymore so it should not be a problem. What kinda of warrenty does to phone have i bought it the day it came out?
you get a one year warranty against factory defects. just call t-mo and tell them your phone keeps boot looping. they'll send you out another one in no time

Maybe people should take responsibility for their actions instead?
Can I just go to tmo store and get a replacement or is it something I need to call on

If you're past the two week grace period you can go into a store, but they will just order one for you there. Even with insurance they won't hot swap you at the store.
Use Odin again and QUIT MESSING WITH YOUR PHONE. Why are you all encouraging the op to get a replacement?

You would be committing fraud which is a crime. Anyone who advises you how to do it would also be committing a crime.
How about you ask how to fix the problem and I'm sure people well versed in Odin will walk you through the fix.
Thanks for helping to drive up the cost of the phones, much appreciated. You VOIDED the warranty by rooting it, deal with it, not expect the rest of us to subsidize your phones.
do people not read disclamers? the devs clearly tell you that your phonw might blow up, so take responsibility for what you do to your crappy phones and man up.

people REALAX. I went to tmobile and told them what i did and they said the root that i had done DID NOT MESS WITH THE WARRINTY. And that i should have brought the phone in before doin anything to it. I have INSURANCE and I will get a new phone tomarrow. Now the guy that helped my had the same root on his vibrant and that he would not have done it if it did mess with the warrinty. So I come on here for some help and you guys toss me under a bus. I never said i was going to LIE TO TMOBLE i would not do that. I still had to pay 130 bucks any way.
Yea, so suck it you war mongers. LOL
Sent from my Vibrant using the XDA app.
Your friendly neighborhood tmobile hacker boy may have taken it back but the policy has always been very clear that rooting your phone will void your warranty. Regardless of whether they took it back or not, the fact remains, you broke it and you want someone else to eat some of the responsibility for your actions.
I told them that i was the one that messed it up so i did not lie to them. I filed a claim with the insurance and they said as long as the type of root that i did was a small one that even though i messed it up there concearn is the warrinty of the phone. its not like all of you are these saints. I did nothing wrong. The insurance could have declined the claim but they did not they just said that i problably should not do it again and that if it did happen again for the same reasone that they would reject the claim. So i did not have any friends at tmo or the insurance. So im all done with this now. Beside all of you have rooted any way so let my say that i hope it does not happen to you.

[q] sprint service rep messed up my phone!

so I took my epic to a sprint store to get a new screen. got it back and turned it on. found out they deleted a few games and my task killer. and for some reason, my phone could not get an service whatsoever. it says I am in roaming with no bars and I know that's wrong because I get full bars in my house. also, I cannot send or receive calls or texts. after n hour on the phone with sprint, they couldn't fix it and they finally just switched my service to an older phone. I will go to a sprint store at a current date but I'm on vacation and don't have a chance to go to the store.
so, any ideas what mightve happened? and ideas how I should go about talking to sprint to get this issue fixed?
thanks in advance.

We will need to know more about the phone. Are you running stock ROM or not? Are you rooted? I am guessing that since you took it into the store that you were running it stock and unrooted. Give us some more details and we might be able to be more help.
It looks like you might need to factory reset, but you can d/l a backup program to save all the .apks for the apps you have gotten from the market, or you can root the phone and get a better backup program. I would not recommend using clockwork recovery as, I believe, it will back up everything and might just restore the phone to its unusable state. That being said it couldn't hurt to try Clockwork recovery and if you just have to wipe the phone again you can.
It's really annoying when you take a phone into Sprint and they just make matters worse. One time I took a phone it for an issue with the screen and they actually broke the screen further and then refused to figure out a way to fix it.
I'm rooted and I'm running the latest epic experience based off of dk28. was not able to odin completely back to stock before taking it to the store. they never said anything about it being the wrong firmware.
when I returned home, it was too late to actually do anything about the issue, so I called tech support. the woman worked me through some tests and nothing indicated what was wrong and therefore there's no solution to it. she finally just said that its a hardware malfunction, which it could be. only way to get that fixed is to go to the sprint store whenever I'm able to, which might not be for a while.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah I don't think it's a hardware issuer personally. If you haven't tried wiping the phone and starting fresh that would be my first step. The fact is that if it's hardware you will end up with a fresh phone anyhow, so why not factory reset the phone and see if it fixes the problem...also maybe uninstall the last few apps you downloaded. They might be messing with your radios.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Did they choc the screen? If stop I guess it's possible that they messed up your radios at thst point.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I actually think this is a hardware issue. Better flash back to stock before you bring it in for any issues or they can deny your replacement. Sprint corporate repair centers have advanced testers specifically for signal related issues and without an antenna it will fail for sure. You may want to explain the issue started when your screen was replaced.
When they replaced the screen they may have screwed up the antenna internal. Generally, a tech will not do anything with the firmware/software when they are fixing hardware so I am not sure what happened with your apps.
Also, the part was likely harvested from another phone... If they brought the antenna from the other phone it could be defective (which is possibly why it was there to harvest from). It's also possible that your antenna is not actually in your phone.
wait I thought if you were within your first year they had to give you a new phone anyway?
I would definatly be raising a stink! Look you paid good money for the phone and hopefully you paid for insurance. dont let them give you second rate service. Go ask for a new phone and just transfer all your stuffto that one.

As stated above, odin to stock, and ***** till its resolved. IDK if another sprint store is an option, but that can help, also calling into tech support and getting an appt with the repair center seems to help. Was just in today and should be getting a 'replacement' Monday, I have a purple line of what appears to be stuck pixels along the bottom or left side of screen. First sprint store, the brilliant techs tried to tell me it was a 'cosmetic flaw' and that they could fix it for 35 bux, knowing I have TEP... got home, called in, tech support guy was really cool, and also noticed that 35 bux applies to people w/o TEP, the only way money would be involved would be water, loss, etc... got an appt for today, and yeah... hoping the replacement is new... but whatever. Anyways, you have a 500 dollar phone, don't take any BS... the first guys even said to call sammy for a warranty.... idiots.
thanks for all the replies.
part of the tests included doing a factory reset. and that didn't work. I can't believe that doing a repair could completely mess up my phone even more. of course I'll ***** and complain until I get my way. I'm used to it with sprint.

They probably didnt reconnect the antenna. I had to get my 3.5mm headphone jack replaced on my epic and when the sprint rep handed the phone back, I went outside and couldnt get any signal whatsoever. I immediately took the phone back and the rep reconnected the antenna in a matter of minutes.

Definitely could be a simple issue with the antenna being plugged in. If it was reset already then its likely not software BUT... they will not replace it if it needs to be replaced if they notice that its rooted.
I had same issue after camera button failed. Antenna wasnt put back on properly. I had crazy signals.

Wrong. Sprint doesn't HAVE to give you a new phone. Its a fix/replace policy and if you don't have insurance it will cost you $35. That's a recent policy change. You can go through Samsung if your looking to excersise your one year warranty...but good luck on a rooted phone.

I will disagree with you, I do beleive that within the first year of you buying that phone they have to give you a replacement, But I will research this further and post my results.
I'll help with the policy, If you don't have a service and repair plan, or TEP, then they will charge you 35 for a repair, regardless of if the phone is in warranty or not. 35 bucks includes everything except board damage, phone coming in the store in two pieces, or liquid damage. I.E. something that can't be repaired anyway by anyone, I.E damaged beyond repair.
If you have the service plan, then you don't get charged the 35 bucks.
If the store can't fix the issue, they order a refurb phone that usually shows up in one/two business days at the store or to your house, your choice.
The only time you get a NEW phone is when you've had the device for less than 30 days, you can return it any time in that period or get it swapped out for a new one if there is a issue and the store can't fix it. You can return it for any reason as well during this time.
Anyway, like everyone stated, the issue with the phone is that the antenna is probably not hooked up. It's at the bottom of the phone, and is connected with a cable that has two connects on it, one at each end, at the antenna and at the main board. One or both of them is off the phone, and that could be fixed by anyone with a screw driver and a butter knife in about 5 minutes.

Well that stinks if i buy a almost 600 dollar phone and say 2 months goes , if they send me a refurbished , im gonna raise a stink.

Phone can't go into download mode bad keyboard, Sprint Service center giving me BS

Hey guys, please help, my keyboard 2 W S Z, that whole roll of keys stopped working and down volume key just suddenly stopped working. I can't go into download mode anymore, don't have TEP, I wanted to get it fixed at the service center, that guy said when they open the phone they said there is liquid inside, what a bunch of lying bastards, when I told him I am very careful with this phone, never in contact with any water, he said maybe you used the phone when it's raining and got water inside, I don't know, can't help you. these F**king guys really pissed me off, he gave me the phone and went to help some guy who wanted to buy a cell phone lol, spent less than 30 sec with me, didn't offer any help, just wanted me to buy a new phone for 600 bucks.
What can I do now?
If they put the message on your account that your phone has water damage you're SOL. however it sounds like they didn't give you much time which is in your favor in this case, call Sprint customer service and say that you went into the store and were ignored when you told them you weren't interested in buying anything but only wanted a repair, ask to be escalated then request that they send you a replacement so you don't have to take more time out of your busy schedule to deal with incompetent Reps whose only interest is making a sale.
Careful...it only takes 30 seconds to check to see if the water damage label is triggered and if there is water damage Sprint won't touch the phone. If you get somebody over the phone to send you a replacement they'll see it on the phone you send back and charge your account for the replacement phone. Water damage seems like an awfully good explaination for the type of problem you're having on the phone...it's just like if you dump some coffee into your keyboard on a computer certain keys short out and stop working. I know it sucks but it makes a lot of sense to a 3rd party looking at your phone.
Why buy a $500 and no insurance (tep) then expect sprint to give you help?

soliciting a bribe isn't cool at all.
FYI (to the OP) most CSR reps can add this to your account for you for no extra cost (beyond the monthly premium). I had a rep add it to my wife's line (temporarily) so that she could to the "4 bad phone swaps to get another device" thing.. she had to do that dance to get rid of her intercept and she now has a transform. The guy on the phone w/ me (at the time) said that any CSR would be able to do that for me.
Don't pay a guy from XDA w/ 3 posts to add anything to your account that you can add w/ just a phone call.
Just sayin'
Not true. You can not just add TEP at any time. It will get added but quickly removed when Asurion checks the account and see it is not within 30 days of purchase or S&R fee.
And more than likely (being a Sprint Tech myself) you did somehow get your phone wet because keys going out is a usual sign. I'm sorry if you felt disrespected at that store but they followed the policy which is what we have to do. As soon as LD is found on board, we flag it and the rest is handled through Asurion (every carrier uses them).
But since you do not have TEP, you are kind of SOL. At that point you can either buy a new phone for full retail or use upgrade if available. Or try and find an old phone at home or from a friend. Or check ebay or craigslist places for people selling Sprint phones with a clean ESN.

Warranty is through Samsung and doesn't cover LD, physical, lost/stolen. TEP is well worth it. And if you want to use your warranty, your right you can. Ship your phone to Samsung and wait for them to determine what was wrong with it. It should only take 4 weeks or so.

For $1k bet, I'll post a screenshot. I'm telling you that they did it w/ my wife's phone 2 months ago. We opened our accounts In Sept.. You're calling me a liar ??
I was up 4 levels from the dorks that answer the phone when u first call. I escalated to that person's supervisor, then tech support level 2, then that person's manager. THAT person added the equipment protection plan for the remainder of the month, then credited my account the price so it was free.
I swear I'll post screenshots. That person even told me that any CSR can add it at any time.
Please get your facts straight.

I have the samsung epic with viperrom synergy flashed to it. I haven't been able to flash back to stock since I flashed synergy. My epic isn't recognized by odin or my windows machine in download mode or with usb debugging checked at all.
My phone fell and my screen cracked.

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? I had mine corrupt themselves not to long ago, or try a different computer?
If not, use these drivers...
32-Bit Drivers
64-Bit Drivers
Also, after uninstalling the drivers, navigating to their Registry entries and deleting them is a good idea too, it's located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Samsung>USB_DRIVERS
As far as them covering it or not, probably depends on the representative you come across, I ran into one who roots and repairs/modifies hardware when I've recently had to get my Epic replaced.

They no longer repair your phone. They have a new program called rapid exchange. They take your phone, give you your battery and SD card, order your new replacement, and you pick it up in a day or two. If you have an old Sprint phone you can use they will activate it for you or you can get a loaner but have to leave a $150 deposit which can be done with a credit card so you never see it.

I work at Bestbuy. Yes it covers it. Doesn't matter what's wrong with ur phone. Any damage to ur phone is covered. Its coverage above the manufacture warranty so.under manufacture if u messed with the software or even dropped it for that matter, it is not covered so Bestbuy offers accidental damage coverage that does cover any damage to ur phone software or hardware related even if it was ur fault. If u took ur phone into Bestbuy and ur phone is unrepairable then they will exchange it out on the spot. My advice is if u have the protection which u would be paying an extra 10 dollars a month for then break it. I know it sounds crazy but trust me I work there so I know how it works. It must be broken to the point to where they cannot repair it. Drop it in water and step on it or something. Take it in and tell them that it fell in a puddle and got stepped on. Remember if u are not paying 10 dollars a month then u do not have accidental coverage but if u are then I would reccomend breaking it as I described. U can even call for confirmation and ask them if u have the protection and it dropped in a puddle and got stepped on will they cover it. They will tell u yes, guaranteed. I sell black tie all the time and I know whay it covers.

My Best Buy said they just do Rapid Exchange whether it is software or hardware. I was told if I say it is broken then they believe me. They were ordering a replacement for me for the PRL issue without even looking at the phone. By the time I got to the store Sprint fixed the issue on their end. No need to destroy a phone that can be reflashed and refurbed.

It is a new phone minus the battery, sd card, charger, cord or docs. Just a new phone and back. Black Tie guaranteed new replacements, no refurbs.

So sprint does this? I'm picking up my new phone today because my other one bricked and I really don't want a refurb.

No, Worst Buy does it if you bought their insurance, Sprint will give you a refurb unless they explicitly say it's new.

Best Buy Black Tie insurance.
Do you BONSAI?
I have the Best Buy insurance on my phone and I must say I will eventually use it.
It's nice to know that there's always a backup plan if my phone dies out on me from giving it "too" much attention. hehe
just an update, so I dropped it off with GeekSquad and they did rapid exchange my phone. I should have my phone today. That is 2 days after dropping it off. Not a bad deal.

I sell black tie all the time and I know whay it covers.

it actually doesnt cover full enclosure in water. and u dont get a new phone right on the spot. all phones get sent out to the service center. if thats your pitch for selling black tie, then your store is screwed

They no longer send it off to a service repair center, it takes about 3 days to process the information and then you're given a newly refurbished phone. Yours goes off to get repaired and added right back into line.

Tried to do the right thing

Phone got bricked last week flashing an all in one zip.
Went to sprint corp store for help. Store manager was cool and didn't trip I told him what happened.
They couldn't restore it either.
He put a claim in to asurion right in the store he reported phone as lost. Said if you get it figured out call them to stop the claim.
With the help of a fellow Xda member restored it using adB commands sweet.
Called asurion to cancel the claim they wouldn't do it now I have 2 sgs ,3
Which I'm sure they will block the other ESN asap.
They wouldn't stop the claim and charged me $150.00
I actually cannot change the phone status to found or whatever.
Moral delima what should I do? I'm using the first sgs 3 the new one is on its way via fed ex.
I guess I'm stuck paying the $150.00 won't even let me return phone.
I'm wondering if asurion is simply an underwriting company.
And another insurer actually pays the claims.
If anyone knows enlighten us all.

It is a relatively widely known fact that Asurion has an ABSOLUTELY NO REFUND policy on deductibles. The manager should have known this, and I would suggest taking it up with him.
The phone that you reported as lost now has a blacklisted ESN and can no longer be activated on the Sprint network. Your best best is to sell it or keep it as a WiFi/Music device. Consider donating it to a developer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanks for doing the right thing! Too often people use this as a means defraud.
Asurion CAN unlist your phones esn as not lost or stolen and stop the claim..but they wont tell you that and you cant ask them to do it.. a Sprint manager has to call them write a report and explain what happened to reverse the process. I know because I've had my phones esn stolen before and a Sprint manager Rep had to contact Asurion to remove the ESN block but I couldnt call them and tell them to do it myself..

Perhaps they can't deactivate it... just prevent it from being activated again.
But, if you can confirm that it hasn't been deactivated (maybe that same manager you talked to can look?) then I would sell that other phone. You tried to do the right thing, those guys wouldn't play ball, so f$&k 'em. No skin off their back anyway.

At this point what you do now is receive the phone --> find a buyer --> sell for 150+ --> profit --> ??
LCD and digitizer are worth more than $150 . Part it out to someone who broke theirs.
