Okay so I downloaded the ota and install it. When the phone boots back up it just says update failed. I am rooted, but that is it. Any suggestions? I tried twice.

My phone booted up, but once bored it gabe me the error. Perhaps when I tried to unroot I messed something up. I deleted some of the sd card files associated with the root

I'm in the same boat.
I used one-click to unroot and it said it was successful but Titanium Backup was still able to get root rights. Not sure what to do here.
When ever in doubt, SBF - Back to stock 2.1
WARNING: ONCE YOU APPLY OFFICIAL FROYO 2.2 YOU CAN'T USE THIS METHOD ANYMORE
Thanks for the reply dr. I rooted but stuck with 2.1. Would that method do anything for me?
Using Bootstrap? If so, delete /system/bin/logwrapper then rename logwrapper.bin to logwrapper. I did this and it worked.
I was not using Bootstrap.
Currently attempting to fix this by reinstalling all of the bloatware that I uninstalled (per this: droidxforums.com/forum/froyo-2-2-news-rumors-wishes/7471-froyo-2-2-ota-install-issues.html).
I thought I had backed up the apps before uninstalling them with Titanium Backup but I was unable to restore them and it seems that it only backed up the application data and not the applications themselves before uninstalling. Funsies. That was an unroot, re-root, unroot, re-root carousel that I never want to go on again.
So... I went here (chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/516/) and downloaded all of the apps that I uninstalled, put them onto my SD card and then used Root Explorer to paste them into the system\app folder because I'm not so good with the command prompt stuff that you all use (if you do use this method, make sure to click "Mount R/W" at the top to get into read/write mode otherwise you can't paste into the system folder... took me way too long to figure out).
I've manually installed all of the apps while the OTA downloads (for some reason no 3G at the office) and will report back once it's finished and I have either Froyo, another failed attempt or a bricked phone. Exciting, no?
More fail. Will update with any useful information.
Yea i can't install it either

I just wanted to say that this worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much.
Looks like I installed the wrong versions of the stock apks (516) and using the right version (604) did the trick.
GL to anyone still having troubles.

my epic is rooted with one click but im trying to install roms but cant.when i get to the recovery screen and try to flash it says..E:failed to verify whole-file signature..E:signature verification failed..im useing rom manager im i missing something
Did you have clock work mod, installed, and when you reboot with rom manager are you making sure you are holding power, volume down, and the camera buttons down until clockwork appears. Samsung stock restore is blue in color. Clockwork is green in color, well mine is at least. You want to make sure you are in clockwork and click CHOOSE zip from sd card. NOT install zip from sd

Thanks ill give it a try..thax for the qwick response
No problem, I had the same problem my self. I thought recovery was clockwork no one tips me clockwork was green instead of blue so I thought I was already in clockwork

It took me a while to realize that I had to find the downloaded rom in the download folder on the sd card when I first started.
Posted via XDA app on Epic Experience 1.2.03 ROM with Phoenix 1.45 kernel
it worked nicely..ya thought i was missing a step, got it now.....thanx again...
Yeah that's the step most people don't really point out. They just say reboot into clockwork

Does anyone know if z4root is compatible with the Epic 4G? If so is it as good/as safe as the 1-click root method?
Why not just 1-click root it ?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I did use one-click root personally, but I've had other users on another forum ask if they could use this as they wanted to root without using a computer. And I'm always open to another root option - just wanted to get the developers' opinions on it.

Strange, I just tried it on my stock Eclair too but didn't work, it got stuck "running the exploit". It changed once to "saving file" but it returned to the previous state and just hung there. I forced rebooted my phone (aka take the battery out) and tried it again, no luck for me in the end.....

Easy, worked like a charm.

Need a little help here so I don't screw up.

Rom manager will not work on the stock kernel on the epic- I wish that Rom manager included that in the support notes- you need a custom kernel - your best bet is to install noobnl clockworkmod
Thanks for the tip. Off to try noobnl clockworkmod.

I have tried EVERYTHING to get into ClockworkMod with no luck. At first I tried rom manager and when I found out it wouldn't work I uninstalled it and downloaded tried to use one click and the 3 finger method and no green :-( I'm positive I'm rooted because z4 said I'm rooted, I can take screen shots, I have setcpu, I have titanium backup, root explorer, you get the point and the are all running without problems. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? I am the first to admit I'm a total "noob" as you all call it when it comes to anything involving technology but I want to try and theme. I also had previously tried one click root on both my windows pc and my pc running linux. I'm sure I'm just missing something obvious lol.
PS yes I have superuser and it grants permission when running root apps also I sucessfully installed busybox if that matters...I'm just dirt duh der I'm sure
I already backed everything and returned my phone to stock again and that didn't help. It gives me the same message at boot up as the poster above if it matters

I had this problem as well. I ended up having to download and use the super one click root method that has clockworkmod recovery built in. make sure you have the sdk installed and place the unzipped one click folder in the tools folder of the sdk. Also download the correct drivers for your computer. I originally rooted with z4root and was in the same boat as you, you can check out the thread I started to get the answer just search ( can I flash froyo beta with out root or clock work???) Shouldn't be to hard to find. Good luck. If you need any help pm me.

I gave up. I just wanted to get better battery life and have more options for customizing but it isn't looking hopeful at this point. Both of my desktops and my laptop had some issue causing me not to be able to install ClockworkMod. I am not computer savey and for sanity reasons I said **** it.
I'm sure ill get a hair when I'm not fed up...
Is it normal that when my phone is in usb dubugging that it pops up an error and won't allow me to connect my usb to a computer? Its a new thing. Everything is backed up on 2 different computers so I think I'm going to try and return my Epic to stock. Maybe that will help, maybe not
Thanks again for trying to help

So I bricked my phone. This time couldn't recover. Warranty replaced it, got my replacement the next day. I've never had a problem rooting before, but this time I can't seem to get anything to work. I'm wondering if they sent me a phone with some type of root protection, if that's even possible. Please help, this really sucks. Tried Superoneclick repeatedly, different versions. Univ Androot doesn't support Sammies (at least not ours). Z4Root doesn't work. Tried Oclf and in the recovery menu I get E:signature verification failed Installation aborted. What do I do?
Last resort (well, actually first resort too): flash adrynalyne's clean rom... That has root built in...
of course you need cwm working to do so....

Hmmm
Ok, I have only previously installed CWmod (once rooted) via Rom manager. Now, not having root, I dl'd cwmod_v08 and dropped the recovery and update.zip on my sdcard. I reboot, holding volume up/volume down. I select apply sdcard:update.zip, and I'm still getting a signature verification error, just like I got when I attempted this via OCLF. I read online that it is a problem with Android System Recovery <3e>, and to revert to 2e to remove the signature verification, but I already show 2e. WTF? I'm about to retrieve my hammer and root this piece Thor-style!
Haven't used Odin, but I guess it's time...
First off, lol @ the Thor thing.. haha
Second, yeah it is definitely time... just make sure you are flashing just the adryn_cwm_recovery4 ( something like that) file in the guide in this thread xP
And make sure you use pda, not phone....
If you still can't get it working, just ask here....
Also, before I'm done... i highly suggest not flashing a full dump in Odin.... just saying xP there is a corrupt version out there ( not on purpose)

Ok, I'm using Odin 4.28 and it looks different than all the vid tutorials I'm finding...cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar is on my desktop, but when I hit PDA and try to select it (the tar file) it says "Invalid Image Type"...
Newer definitely doesn't always mean better xP i suggest downloading another, older, version...

Ok, DL'd Odin3, it seems to be working better...What did you mean by you recommend not flashing a full dump? Sorry, still learning this stuff...I appreciate the help...
The link is bad for the update.zip file in the *Official* Clockwork Recovery thread. I flashed using odin3 and it seemed to work but when I attempt to apply the update.zip My little android turns into a caution sign-holding android error screen. Don't know if I did something wrong with Odin or if the update.zip files I am able to find online are wrong for loading clockwork with this particular recovery image (the tar is the image, correct? lmao) Help! Please! I'll send you good vibes and spiritual cookies!
Lmao, i love you xP
I would say first trying to push all of the soft keys and see if it pops up then...
That has happened to me before, and I didn't know what was going on either xP
Try that though... If not, then yeah... Your Zip is bad... I'll upload mine

im going to try it in a sec, but just two questions. one, isn't this just to change your boot logo? and do i need the continuum pit.pit file?
Yes, it does give the ability to change the boot logo... But when doing it, i noticed that after flashing, the stock recovery does this weird thing where it wipes everything, even when normally it won't... after that, it worked again...... Just know you will loose your data But whatev's
and no, not necessarily..
If that doesn't work, which is probably won't, then reflash the stock recovery, then try the cwm v4 adryn recovery, then try the stock kernel, and then the system image, all in Odin... In that order
oh, and cobitts15... Your dumb... always do a nandroid backup, even if its something simple...
and you are using the wrong Odin... try doing a wipe from within the stock recovery, and if that doesn't work, then download the RIGHT ODIN and flash that file... then go through the steps easily found within the development thread and get cwm working...
can i use heimdall instead of odin? i have a mac

Define "doing stuff". That could be anything, like constantly tapping the volume button scrolling through one screen, or playing with the mounts and formatting options. The more detail you can give about what you were doing, the easier it will be to solve the problem.

Only problem now is that my 3g or wireless doesn't work, any ideas to fix this?
can you go to settings, about phone, and tell me what is says for baseband?
si400.0.6v.dl17
Hmm... I would've thought that was going to be blank....
Well, all I can say is to try flashing the clean rom in cwm, and do a user wipe...
And it wouldn't hurt to first try to reactivate... Go to dialer and type in *228 then when you hear the lady's options choose 1...
Try that first xD
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
I tried to do the re-activate thing, still nothing.
I'm getting a replacement handset sent to me for free but I wanna try and see if I can fix this before I send it back just for experience sake so at this point if I brick it trying new things I don't care because I got a new phone.
So if anyone has any experimental ideas let me know
I had the same thing happen to me a month ago, but it hung on the verizon screen instead of the samsung screen. Seems our stock dumps don't contain the information to do DNS resolving. If you notice, the WiFi and 3G are both out, because you can't get DNS to work properly. I feel like if we bindiff the dumps with the actual phone we could get an idea of where we can't get, but i guess our problem is actually accessing the part we aren't getting.
