Hey guys. Just thought I would post about my experience at Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. 2 of my brothers and one of my brothers girlfriend all own the IPhone in various models and 2 of them have the newest IPhone 4. I pulled out my EVO to take some pictures of the nephews and nieces and they all started asking about my phone. "Can I see that?" "Is that the EVO?" They were amazed by my phone. I showed them all kinds of things on it and they were drooling and I could see the jealousy in their eyes. The IPhone 4 is nice, but in my personal opinion I would rather have a new Android phone any day. Anyway, that's my story and if you have one similar you could share it too. Thanks HTC and Sprint for such a beautiful and breathtaking phone that makes IPhone users drool at the site of it.
Nice pretty cool story

There are some Iphone users who are in the dark about android, and once they see what it offers are hooked. But I find most Iphone users are such for a reason, they just dont know how to use other OS's and dont care to learn, or devote any time to it, the Iphone is just so easy to use out of the Box that they are happy with it, and when you show them Android with widgets and different types of alterations with each manufacturer, along with Home screen replacements, they just have that glazed over look in their eye, and thats when you understand why they bought the Iphone. To each his own.

Oh Ya and to add insult to injury one of the new iPhone 4s had the antenna issues. Dude said it drops calls all the time, but usually when he holds it like you would hold a typical phone. He said he has to try and remember not to hold it that way. Felt kinda bad seemed like he felt the iPhone 4 was a let down.

Having an iphone is like reading the same book over and over, a short book at that. Android is like having an entire library to read always something new.

Literally laughing so hard I'm crying....
God that made my day.
I will be saving this picture and copying your method of delicious hilariousness whenever i get the chance.
A few of my co-workers had the new iphone, and after seeing my evo and it's brutal awesomeness, two of them actually switched to sprint a week later just to get one.
+1 sprint
I have both... I phone 4 and Evo... My evo takes ok pics the iphone kills it, My evo has a larger screen but for some reason the iphone seems clearer, iphone has better games, and video capture seems better.. but MAN THAT SPRINT coverage just kicks a$$. oh and the evo nav and free wifi tethering. not to mention the calendar kicks butt! oh and the music downloaders.. good stuff. All in all I think I need both to make a baby so I can have the ultimate phone!
I was working at new data center being built in North Carolina for Apple (I think the data center was code named "Dolphin"). I was on a smoke break, doing a video chat with Qik, and a few people came over to see what I was doing. They were amazed that I was video chatting with my wife 1000 miles away. A few of them had Blackberry's, some Symbian, and I think one with the Iphone (3?). I was there for 2 weeks, and by the time I left I know of 3 people who switched to Sprint and got Evo's.
The only reason why iphone pictures look better is because they have better resolution screen. If you put both pictures on a pc the evo pictures look way better. Evo rocks.

No way dude don't you know the EVO is the off spring of the iphone and Chuck Norris it doesn't get anybetter. lol
I agree with a_swellguy, there are pro's and con's to each, and I can definitely confirm iPhone pictures do look great, even in low light. Sometimes my Evo pics are very blurry and noisy in low light.
iPhone's battery life is also about twice what we get, and although multitasking is quite limited you don't have to spend as much effort worrying about maximizing battery life with task killers and such. It just kind of works.
The screen thing is kind of a wash, yes the iPhone is higher resolution, but I'd much rather have the extra screen size of the Evo than slightly smaller pixels, I think the Evo's resolution is already pretty dang high as it is and plenty for anything I do.
Sprints network slaughters AT&T any way you cut it however.

I work in the cellphone industry and VERY few people in this industry use any kind of GSM (AT&T or T-mo) service, why you ask? because they suck! I work in the middle of nowhere a lot those that use ATT I have the hardest time getting a hold of them because they are out of service when my Sprint works just fine.
VZW and Sprint have the best networks I have worked on, handsdown. They also have better roaming agreements with the regional carrier to get coverage in the middle of nowhere in the mountains.
I like my EVO and I am glad I am not tied to that POS ATT network (if they really want to call it that).
I met this incredibly hot girl at the bar last night. She wouldn't give me the time of day even though she saw me arrive in my Ferrari and I was wearing a $2000 suit.
Then I was talking on my EVO and she walked up and tugged on my sleeve. "Is that an EVO" she asked? "Why, yes it is", I responded. "AWESOME!", she said, "let's go back to my place..."
God I love this phone! ;-)

i'm surprised how much better the nexus one photos are. i would have thought the incredible camera would be better. maybe all these people will calm down now saying the sky is falling because another phone besides the nexus was released!
I'll take a 5MP camera-phone over an 8MP one ANY day. Actually, I'd prefer a 2-3MP one. The sensor is so small that increasing megapixels will only ruin the quality.
Nexus One FTW!!
The pool shot does show the 3MP difference though. But the rest was obviously on Nexus favor. So you're right, Nexus One FTW!

I hope this article gets spread around the internet. Time for some GOOD publicity for the Nexus One, rather than all the internet whining. Of course, we can't have that, so who wants to bet this one doesn't get reposted 30 times? Unlike the image downsampling false articles etc...
Thanks for posting. Man I love the N1.

All the bad N1 press is really starting to piss me off. I have co-workers coming up to me everyday saying things like "so I read the Nexus One isn't so great after all". I have to remind them that all the articles are written by iphone fanboys.
I couldn't be happier with my N1 and there is no other phone out there today that I want more.
For a bit, I felt the same way every time people say something bad about the N1 based on articles they've read somewhere. But now, I just say, "Yes, go get yourself an Iphone and we'll compare it then" It aint my loss

Look at Justin's comment in that news article. I like the pictures that he took with his phone.
Maybe it was on bad settings, ya know, set lower quality, sharpness and contrast off, or a bad lense... I agree, the nexus takes fantastic photos, but let's not say the n1 is better cause of one comparison... or were falling into the same category as idiots logging the n1, I love this phone also here's my best pic, this is incredible imo....

I'm not saying the Nexus One is better than the Incredible. I just want there to FINALLY be some GOOD coverage of the Nexus One.
So far all it has been is some apple fanboy like boygenius writes about a rumored flaw and it spreads like wildfire, with dozens and dozens of blogs straight up copying the article with slight paraphrasing without doing any investigation at all. (Seriously, take a look at http://news.google.com/news/search?&q=android and you'll see the same article 30 times. The current lame article is the whole "awmagad!!!! no Vorizen Nexus One!!!! Is teh Goggle abandoning thair online-store planzzz as a faylure!??!?!??!!?!?")
I think the biggest source of fault here is Google though, for not advertising the phone through traditional means (television, radio, and in-person ads). It's easy to give bad press to a device that has no advertising to brainwash people (like apple does).
Anyway, what I took from the article is that the Incredible is better, if you take the time to adjust the settings properly to the subject in the frame. The Nexus One is better for blind point and shoot.
I'm just baffled by all the bashing and complaining about the nexus. the official Google forums is horrible with that. I've been in the smartphone world for many years now, and It's just thru th roof with all the whining. I seriously don't get it. is it just amateurs buying this phone or something?
Incredible:
- looks like crap compared to N1
- doesn't have dual mic noise cancellation
- has a weaker battery than the N1
- must have a $70/mo contract minimum instead of better options
- doesn't have trackball notifications
- AND takes worse pictures than the N1?!?! (it's one supposed "strength" over the N1)
Thank god I don't live in a place where I have to be a slave to Verizon coverage...
Oh Nexus, how I love you so
Here's one I took the other night...

I read this earlier really surprised me. I have never used the Incredible for pictures, but just expected it to take great pictures just like my Nexus One does. They must use something different in the sensors or just better build quality. Good post!
Looks as though the N1 just came out ontop of another opponent. So far its been like this. Iphone 3gs > Desire > Incredible > EVO (or galaxy). Kinda like video game boss battles where everytime you beat a boss, the next boss is a little harder to defeat. I can't wait to see how the N1 squares up against the evo and galaxy. Even if the Nexus One does lose, it won't be by much (just like the incredible vs n1). Good times.

I have heard of several phones being hailed as "The iPhone Killer", namely the Palm Pre that I just got rid of. The EVO seems to just about have everything to take that title and actually live up to it. So, what does it take to kill the iPhone and is the HTC EVO 4G it?
Sorry no.
The evo is great, and I am excited for it to arrive, but there are things about Android that need to be ironed out before it can be an iphone killer. My list of things that need improvement for Android to become the mainstream iphone killer.
1. better marketplace experience/apps - but getting better daily
2. better ways to edit/insert text.

3. better way to manage gps, you should not have to turn it on or off to use it. My coworkers Droid sometimes leaves the GPS on when she is not using it. Killing the battery.
4. improve the onscreen keyboard
5. force hardware manufactures to use transflective displays
6. MARKETING MARKETING MARKETING. Why is it that everybody including my mother knows how to use an iphone based on the TV commercials yet most of the general public has no idea what Android is?
Nothing on my list is serious, #6 I think is the biggest problem for Android.
this phone is amazing. but it's size and some of the things will make it a 'niche' product.
i think it's better then an IPhone, but i post on development forums and read blogs, will my mother think it's better? hard to say.
So, what does it take to kill the iPhone and is the HTC EVO 4G it?

Why does it have to be a iPhone killer? Some sort of Apple phone will always be around because there are people that will buy whatever Steve Jobs tells buy and there are a LOT of those people. IMO

It'll be a long time before anything "kills" the iPhone, however I do believe the Evo is doing an excellent job of pushing Apple to continue to advance to keep ahead. It's hard to kill something that's also growing quickly in features and ability.
Ultimately, I think the Cell wars are just heating up and it will be a great time of innovation all around...lots of competition!

1. Froyo 2.2 has a much better updated marketplace and should address that, and as you said, the app offerings are getting better everyday
2. I haven't really had a problem with editing text, but I agree with your number 4 (as does Google). They have stated the keyboard will receive some attention in further builds.
3. Thats what she should do, the GPS is only active when an application is requesting location. It doesn't hurt the battery at all to leave it on, just so long as you dont have an application that constantly pings your location in the background.
Everything else I agree with, however I think the "Droid Does" campaign for Verizon has been successful.
I know several iPhone 3Ga user that have switched and are never going back.

I traded my iPhone for the Evo and so did my wife and we're both loving it.
I think it's unfair to call this phone an iPhone killer. They're two different animals. Completely.
It's like comparing a semi to a sports car. Both are automobiles, but that's where the similarities cease. One is necessary when moving heavy objects, capable of doing multiple things as once, and the other does only one thing very very well. You can get a semi tricked out to do 0-100 in under 10 seconds, but can you take a sports car and pull a house down the highway? No. Again, 2 different uses, each with their own unique application.
I use to have an iPhone, still have one actually, but I don't use it ever since I got my first Android here in the US. Would I say that any Android kills the iPhone? Depends on what we are talking about. And it also depends on the user.
My Dad uses the iPhone. He's not super techy. He's perfectly comfortable only running one app at a time, seeing as he only uses less than 20 altogether. Does he need advanced hardware to make a phone call? Nope. In his opinion, there will never be an iPhone killer, because they've managed to take a very basic function phone, give it the ability to run selected apps on the phone, without making it crash. That's the pinnacle of simplicity for him, and I doubt he'll ever change. And there are literally thousands of users like him out there, who could care less about a phones ability to hook into HDMI, or true multitasking, or how fluid the interface is.
I, alas, am not one of them. I care. A lot. To say one person's preference is better than another is crazy. Example: I have a rather wealthy friend who loves to eat overly expensive food. He loves caviar. I've tried it, properly, 6 times. Each time, I've lost the entire contents of my stomach through my mouth. Does that make caviar bad? Nope, it just makes it not for me, and you'll never see me bad mouth caviar. But you may see me wince a bit when it's mentioned.

I would disagree the Iphone is junk that has a really good marketing team. At least I can plug my phone in and charge it when the batt is low and still talk on it. The Iphone shuts down for five min and the market place is under apples rule that's why cydia had to be made. I don't have a Iphone and never had one but have jailbroken a lot for friends and family. All of witch say they will buy a android phone next after seeing how easy it is to modify. Oh yea it's now on it's fourth Gen phone and it just now is getting multitasking. It took three just to do video EPIC FAIL Apple. There should be a new name it's not a smart phone. It's just a average phone can't multitask can't call it smart.

Yep, I just switched from a 3GS to the Evo and so far, I love it. Like the OP said, the keyboard does suck though, it's just weird and sloppy compared to the iphone's keyboard. Plus, I don't know if it's just me, but scrolling feels not as responsive as it did on the 3gs.
@ this point in time, the way i feel about apple, windows and atnt, Id rather have a bricked hero than support apple/atnt by purchasing anything from THAT merchandising nightmare. I find it sooooo unbeleivable that 90% of the mobile phone users in the world are uneducated TECHnically speaking. To remind you in case no one has: WE ARE THE MINORITY......the ones that know enough to get the most for our money in a device such as this. My hero put away any thoughts i ever had about using my ipwnd ever again after 2hrs of use. OK i lied, its a pretty good wi fi browser....but are YOU gonna throw your old perfectly functioning iphone away? Back to topic....Apple is like a giant plague infecting the (oooh, imma get an iphone because......ummm everyone i know has one?????????) masses. Man we need more android commercials. Im practically one myself. So sad that ppl still have the MOTO DROID confused with the ANDROID OS......ppl are soo dumb, no offense to those ppl. Just stating some facts, and this is in fact, MY OPINION.
I would say the EVO 4G as a great Iphone replacement but not an Iphone killer. There is no need to make an Iphone killer per se. Iphone and the market place they have created will be very very difficult to beat. There are loyalists that won't leave and there are users that don't want to learn a new OS. Android is best served to try and capture the uninitiated.
Heavy texters loves blackberry and blackberry has done a tremendous job catering to them. The new bold 9800 slider will keep their text heavy base of users.
It's good to have this diversity in this market space. I moved away from Iphone as well but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate their products. I really like android and will continue to use it. Windows mobile 7 will also make my list of things to try. Can't wait.
Come on now people. Why people still caring about the "Iphone killer" ideology? The iphone been killed IMO. We know iphone is a simple interface, dumbed down device anyone can use. Yall's EVO, is light years ahead of Iphone as far as functionality. Remember, no restrictions with Android. Iphone OS, u basically can't do squat off tops. U have to hack it. Android is very customizable right out the box. Iphone had its day already. My tilt 2 blows iphone away. The evo and few others with snapdragon, have just changed the whole game up. Especially with Android on the rise so rapidly now. The new wm7 mobile is now basically copying iphone styles and methods. Of being simple as hell and not letting u do nothing customizable or being able to go into the internal system of it. WM hads its day. The Rise of the Machines has Begin. Android

As pointed out, it doesn't have to be a killer. I believe the iPhone and Android phones can coexist in this exciting new mobile world. My friend switched from an iPhone to the Evo and he loves it. But then again, he's a Linux and electronics geek like me, so the phones appeal to us.
The Evo 4G is without a doubt the best Android rendition yet, but there are some things that iPhone does better.
As far as text editing, the new way of selecting and copying text within emails and websites is AMAZING. Being able to easily select the start and end is brilliant.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this. But there are tons of keyboards out there for android. You arent limited to the stock keyboard. Its extremely easy to switch between them as well. So anyone holding the keyboard against google, htc or anyone is just plain stupid (not saying the person i quoted is). Almost every app that comes with the phone can be replaced my a "3rd party" one (assuming htc is the main). So people that complain about an app on the phone is obviously new to android.
I would make a post about this but it would just start a huge arguement/discussion. It seems everyone *****ing about the Evo are people coming from an iphone or just Att in general. I havent seen anyone that complained about something say what alternatives that tried to fix the issue. Its just if the phone isnt what they expected out of the box, they cry about it.
Dont need nothing but swype, and I can't imagine using it on a screen any smaller than this. Is swype even on iphone? Out really is a revolutionary way to type on touchscreen devices.

iPhone was amazing back in it's day it was ahead of it's time and there was nothing else like it problem is it hasn't really advanced much at all since its been around so it will die out eventually. No phone is ever going to kill it though just because it has a huge customerbase already established. People are still using Motorola Razors and other phones some people will continue to use the iPhone forever as well regardless of how outdated it continues to become.
It's definitely lost it's crown though the EVO is undeniably better in just about every way. iPhone feels ancient when put next to the EVO LOL
from http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/epic-4g-review
"So is it the right phone for the job? In a word, yes -- the Epic 4G is a great device. Killer, even. Nothing speaks to us more strongly during the course of a review than finishing it and saying, "alright, I'm ready to buy this thing," and the Epic is on the short list of phones that has managed to do it. More than its Galaxy S siblings, it feels like the Epic has overcome its shortcomings -- notably the forgettable UI skin -- to shine, and it's a phone we could easily imagine using day to day. Only thing is, the EVO is also on that short list for us -- and the better camera, bigger screen, and $50 savings versus the Epic still make it our winner in this 4G shootout, though only by the thinnest of margins. Needless to say, if you need a physical keyboard and you're looking for the one of the most musclebound Android phones money can buy, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it."
I've been thinking about switching over to the Epic but the GPS problems found on all the Galaxy S phones along with Samsung's bad reputation for slow if any updates make me really appreciate how awesome the Evo/HTC really is

But the Evo and iPhone 4 got the same score.
They really aren't as bad as some other news blogs out there (Gizmodo).
How many Epic threads do we need in an Evo forum? Are we going to have a separate thread for the Gizmodo review?
i played with a epic today, i wont be switching from my evo...
Engadget? -- Really? -- They're not even fully aware of GPS problems that are affecting the Galaxy S line of phones -- in short, completely disregard their reviews because -- Engadget isn't playing with a full deck -- don't let your love for HTC cloud your objectivity.
Hopefully I used -- enough.

The Gizmodo article needs its own thread actually...unlike this one..I mean in the Gizmodo article..now don't get a heart attack...only time it compared the Epic to the iphone 4 was to say that the Epic is better at it...when I saw that my jaw dropped....if anyone doesn't believe me read the article...
That said samsung said GPS will be fixed in September..so thats withing the 30 days of the Epic..so if necessary it ca be returned if GPS is a concern.
As for the Engadget review..only reason it got an 8/10 over a 9/10 was due to the 50$ extra..so its not that its a worse phone.it just costs 50$ more...

They amended the review at Engadget after talking to Samsung. The Epic ships with AGPS turned off. Once it was activated, they said things look fine.
Apparently google is requiring this to be off by default now. Must be a privacy thing, because I can't see a logical reason to reduce functionality otherwise.
Most buyers will never turn it on, and will assume their phone navigation sucks.
We see who is lurking in the background:

Considering the Epic *****ing when the evo was released about all the bone headed issues HTC still have not fixed I don't think anyone can point a finger at samsung. The Epic is slated for 2.2 in September and a GPS fix.
Without root and custom roms the EVO, for a power user, is a POS.
Talk about construction issues. Different parts of varying capability and quality. Different screens, different multitouch sensors etc its like they took all the extra parts they had lying around and stuffed them into the cases.
Light leakage, screens lifting etc... FPS fix? SD cards corrupted? Touch input lag? Grounding issues? Thank God for XDA and some updates.
The EVO shipped with far more wrong that the epic. This is coming from an EVO owner. If the worst thing wrong with the Samsung is a GPS issue that will get fixed and touch wiz lag (Which you can remove without a custom rom unlike HTC sense) then they are a few steps ahead of where we were at release.
Also it seems the 1gb of storage may entirely be NAND fixing the app lag from the vibrant and other Galaxy S devices. From Slash gear's review:
Happily, while use of the Galaxy S series was punctuated with freezes and pauses, anecdotally blamed upon the handsets’ use of an internal microSD card for their onboard storage, the Epic 4G seems generally free of such lag.

It's still "Internal SD" from what I can see, we (Captivate/Vibrant) don't have the newer firmware (yet) that eliminates lag when going back to the homescreen or when opening apps.
Got a chance to compare them side by side today and I have to say I highly prefer the EVO, the Samsung has a smaller screen yet the device is bigger and bulkier than the EVO. The UI looks like something designed by a 5 year old with a box of crayons. I guess if you really need a hard keyboard the Epic would be the only route you can take but the keyboard works great on the EVO so I actually prefer the slimmer device rather than a bulky 90's esque slide out keyboard phone. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would want an Epic over an EVO but I imagine some Epic owners feel the same way about the EVO. Regardless there is not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever own an Epic over an EVO The only other phone I might choos is iPhone 4 but with it's tiny screen and lack of widgets the whole thing just seems like outdated technology, I think Apple has alot of catching up to do to win me back from the EVO/Android.

agreed, i played with our demo epic all day today, and honestly, im not that impressed. It is a VERY nice screen, but as stated all over, colors look highly over saturated, and text is grainy because of it. I am envious of the 60fps when scrolling through menus, but thats ALL. Touchwiz is a JOKE. The capacitive android buttons work when they want to, cameras are much lower quality, and the screen is smaller. MY unbiased opinion? I think the epic is better for the GENERAL public out of the box vs the evo. That being said, For us XDA people, The evo is still the clear winner. Ill take my over clocked custom rom'd up ass evo ANYDAY over the epic. GO HTC!

"Oversaturated"? Riiight. I'm guessing those true black levels are highly exaggerated too.
I am within 30 days of return date for my evo and was considering making the switch but the reviews make it easier for me to stick to the evo
With fresh Rom and havs kernel my battery life is fine and I don't really think I would ever use the horizontal hardware keyboard
If it was a vertical keyboard maybe since id be able to use it one handed
The screen is nice but from looking at the vibrant it had a blueish hue I did not care for. Additionally the pentile matrix display made text a bit tough to read from anything but zoomed in levels

Yeah have you ever been to an Iphone forum? They act like the iphone is god's work and every other phone is just trying to copy.
I'm guessing you're comparing the Evo/Iphone.
The camera app actually has many more functions than an Iphone camera. From contrast/saturation/brightness levels to ISO levels, we have quite a bit of customization there. The camera is as good as the person using it.
We also have some camera replacement apps (as well as messaging app replacements and widget replacements and keyboard replacements... )
Retina display is all Steve Job's bs crap. No one cared about pixels until he mentioned it. Have you used a magnifying glass to read text on your phone and find all the pixels?
I'd rather have a bigger screened phone. I don't know how anyone can go from 4.3" to 3.5", lol. I can't even drop down to 4.0" for some of these new phones coming out.
Better cpu? Eh, snapdragon is fast enough on the CPU side.
GPU? Sucks...
But if you're comparing any of the newer phones such as the newer GPUs by HTC and the Galaxy line by Samsung, then it beats the iphone.
App market? We have SOOOO many more free apps... period. I rarely buy apps. The App store is filled with soooo many 99c crapps. Until recently, they have been getting priority with companies. Nowadays, many new apps are built for android/iphone both simply because of the marketshare.
Though I do commend Apple on keeping their product line so simple... they can create the thinnest phone with the biggest battery and everyone buys it.
Other companies need to learn from that. HTC pumps out new phones like no other. Phones get lost with all these random names like Desire, Eris, Incredible, Hero, Evo... not to techies, but to regular users.
Woooah rant. Fed troll. :/
The retina display is so much clearer than super amoled, or any other android screen on the market (right now)
The iphone is so much snappier than my evo, even with me running CM6. Everything on the iphone is faster. One thing i really noticed was how fast photos upload. In order for me to look at my pictures on my sd card, it takes 10 seconds to see one photo (might be exaggerated by a couple of seconds), but on the iphone you click on gallery, and the photos are there.
The app store on mac products also has apps for basically everything. Android is finally catching up..and im proud of them. However, it will take a while before they have the amount of apps that are as good as iphone. I would rather pay 99 cents for an app than not have an option for it at all.
My opinion is that a iPhone is a toy its a ipod touch really with more specs I'd rather have a phone that looks different from. Every apple product all there touch products look the same
To me that's my opinion
Just thought I'd share this story with you guys to give you all a quick laugh :
When I walked into my local Apple Store (I was checking out their headphone selection (BOSE FTW)), a typical technologically ignorant boob of a woman stopped me and asked me if my Fascinate was some sort of new iPhone model, based on its similar looks. I simply responded: "Nope, it's better".
She was looking into an iPhone, and she continued to ask a pantheon of facepalming questions: "What's an Android?", "Does that have apps?", "Can I go on the internet?", etc. I proceeded to demonstrate how the Fascinate was better in just about every category. Well the look on her face after that point pretty much resembled that of a cross-eyed sloth, but she said that she was going to return home and "research" the pros and cons of the two phones.
I'd like to think that I did a good deed that day by prolonging (or preventing) an iPhone purchase and glorifying the Fascinate .
You're all welcome to share any of your own iTard encounter stories here as well!
EDIT: It seems I've been getting a lot of hate for thinking Bose is "ftw". Can someone make a suggestion of what else out there is better? (Not trying to be incompetent, just honestly curious)
Anytime you can turn someone away from the iPhone is a DEFINATE WIN.
1 less iSheep hopefully
Haha that made me laugh. Since we are sharing stories I'll share one of my own. I work in retail and a lady once walked up to the mobile phone booth, looked at a Captivate and said she wanted to purchase one. She kept reiterating saying how she was so glad to finally have it. After everything was wrapped up with the sell she left and went to a nearby AT&T store and told them she got an iPhone and needed to purchase a case for it (cause she didn't like ours). They told her that wasn't an iPhone and she stormed back to our mobile booth and very ignorantly said she didn't want that phone and wanted to replace it with the iPhone even though she used the Captivate and liked it. It's this ignorance of people that have no idea how smartphones work that makes me angry. Apple is good at collecting sheep and for a while that was almost me until I laid eyes on the Captivate that was love at first sight. Ended up getting a Fascinate.
Thread has great potential

Guys, we shouldn't get stuck in simple ideological gridlock. I believe the answer to most things is in the middle, rather than at the extremes. Now then, I love the open modifiable nature of Android. But to claim the Fascinate easily overpowers the iPhone is quite a narrow one sided view. Such a view is really propaganda.
Both my brother and coworker have the iPhone 4. Both are EE's who researched it and not simpletons. The battery life of the iPhone 4 blows the fascinate out of the water. While I get a max of 3 hours of display on time, they easily enjoy 8 hours. This is no small difference, I'm constantly short of battery at the end of the day with my fascinate.
I run launcher pro and get pretty smooth UI animations, however it does jitter and jerk here and there. When scrolling any list the processor is pegged at 100% usage. (Part of battery issue) Now then the iPhone 4 is silky smooth in every way, never pausing or jerking UI animations. It's excellent software design.
Every major game developer praises the iOS development environment. (C/C++) All significant 3D games launch on apple first... then maybe some come to Android later. Who wants a performance game running on a freeking Java virtual machine? OK, so Android can have native code too and ver 2.3 removes some JVM handicaps, but there are 0 games taking advantage of 2.3. Plus the fascinate is still on 2.1. Apple has tons of games that run awesome right now.
I like my Fascinate, but iPhone 4 can hold ground against it *very* easy.
Having had an older and much laggier iphone (3g no s), I can say that the iOS experience then, still is better than the time I have with my phone since i got a nexus one. I liked it better at first because it wasn't laggy, I was just happy with it being snappy. And then I went on the Android market.... SMGDH.... Does it have apps? Yeah... but they suck ass, hard... My gf hasn't downloaded ONE app on her fascinate since I got it for her, and what girl doesn't download apps on an iPhone?! Exactly, ... if there were anything worth downloading she probably would have by now... For me, it's kind of good that android doesn't pull my interest away from the computer and other aspects of my technological life, it is just my phone... I like android because it got me OFF the phone from being on it as much as I was on it when I had an iphone. Flashing roms is fun n all, but SSH'ing into my jailbroken iphone and theming it was wayyy easier, music player was better, and of course the games... i had asphalt 5 then (they have like fkin asphalt 7 now), in 2008/9 and it worked better than on this phone or my friends epic? #fail... I had quake 3 on the iphone and that did not work as well as my fascinate, but either the 3gs or the iphone4 will smash this phone at the 1st person shooters available, and that's what im into. So hopefully they make it with a bigger screen this year, and a little secret... Black people don't argue about which smartphone is the best, the ones that use them, know the iPhone is the best, we just can't afford AT&T's hella crazy plan, but we love to use Evos and Epics on Boost mobile and Fascinates on Cricket =/. I pay less than my homeboy who just got the i4 from the 3gs, (130 - 1 line / 115 - 2 lines) #Winning.

While convincing someone to look into android over ios puts a little money in a better place and technically gives them a better devise, I think its a bad idea. For starters an average person with no knowledge or any desire at all to learn any platform is going to have a hard time with both. either device in the hands of such a person will leave them cursing it.
Right now most people are utterly convinced they want and need a smart phone. For those that can't work the microwave (not an insult at all), neither device is right for them no matter how better android is. I have just recently convinced four people into their smart phone decisions, two of them I recommended iphone, and two android. While I have no doubt the two iphoners arnt going to be happy (as they seem to have a hard enough time with making calls on their feature phone). I prefer them being disappointed in apple.

I prefer to and need to use my phone as more than just a simple toy or entertainment device such as the iPhone. What makes Android a significantly more productive operating system? Three things:
1. Widgets: no need to open miscellaneous app to see when I have an appointment, my calendar is a screen away.
2. The notification bar: its just plain useful: emails, texts, alerts, all at the swipe of finger.
3. Download ANYTHING: I can download virtually any file on the internet and view/edit it as I require - unlike the simplistic PDF viewer and limited email downloading capabilities support of iOS.
Would I buy a 15 year old an Android? No, they most likely can't take advantage of its best features. Would I buy it for someone who needs information without the time consuming glitz and glamor of iOS? Absolutely.

That is funny. And I dislike the iPhony for a number of reasons. But, I believe there are a lot of sheeple out there that need the iPhony, and she sounds like one of them. Clueless about what the different options are that are available to her. No idea what she wants to even do with a smartphone. She needs someone to hold her hand and give her a nice quiet place to be in. The iPhony may offer that better then an Android.
Someone tries to take me by the hand and show me what to do, it is going to involve kicking, and fists swinging, so I want a more open system.
The main problem here is the fact that iOS and Android are, at this point at least, are about even for the consumers with "average" knowledge of computers that have more than likely grown up using them. Anyone above average that likes to tinker with their devices should quite obviously get an android phone, anyone that is below average that just wants a few apps and to make phone calls and doesn't really want much more than a feature phone with apps should likely get the iPhone. Lets face it android is more like a computer than the iPhone is and therefore, is more confusing for people at first and if the person that gets the android phone doesn't even really know how to properly work a computer will more than likely get confused with the android phone more than they would with the iphone
Ahhh, the simple minded views abound. It is possible to admit the assets of other devices without feeling dissapointed in yours. Most people realize this as they mature. People who should get an iPhone:
1) Anyone, techy or not, that is busy and has no time for tweaks and mods, but yet wants all basic smartphone functions to work immediately and perfectly.
2) Anyone wanting all the best 3D games
3) Anyone without constant access to charger. Battery life of most android phones is pretty bad. I don't want a 3000 mah battery mod for my phone, I want it to work out of the box with iPhone 4's 8 hour screen time.
Now then, its no surprise at all that apple sells a ton of these devices. Please stop being surprised or mad that apple is doing so well. Please acknowledge the areas that they accel, and instantiate yourselves as mature humans.
I kept a close eye on the android os when it was first released and I have always loved smart phones. My first was an imported Sony Ericson p800 (the full touch screen in early 2000's would blow people's mind haha). I absolutely loved my experience with the og droid and fell in love with android. However, with my experience with the fascinate, and the overall direction of most carriers to locking down these handsets more and more, I am starting to reconsider staying with android. Lets face it. These software manufacturers, barring HTC, and phone carriers, are all terrible at software and lack any kind of vision regarding user enjoyment. They are all about maximizing profits and "differentiation" Motorola almost went out of business because they suck at software. They have forgotten this and now insist on making their own adjustments to android that just make things harder to use. With the increasing difficulty of getting android back to stock, it is becoming less and less attractive. I believe phones like the droid is the pinnacle of the android experience, an experience that is becoming more and more rare. It seems the nexus phones won't see the light of day on verizon, who has the best network as well. If the iPhone does indeed have the rumored 4 inch screen, I would have to look at it seriously.
So you are a phone elitist talking down on a person that doesnt know about android,
yet you go to the apple store to buy ****ty bose audio products? What a horrible life you must live to have your day brightened by this type of event.

Hey, I wasn't talking down to her. I'm a salesman, and I was simply demonstrating the features of the Fascinate.
And Bose in my opinion is pretty damn good compared to the equivalent in skullcandy or Sony.
Also, I never stated that it brightened my day. I stated that it was a funny experience that I'd like to share with you all.
Hope that changes your tone =/

The Fascinate and Android to me are better because of the iPhone, prior to 2006 all phones pretty much sucked. iPhone changed the game.
I feel that Apple Computers are better than Windows. I received an iPad 2 as a gift and I do not like the iOS 4. I prefer Android....

anyone that i hear around me that desire an iphone i have to ask them why they want it. what will they use it for. Then i show them my fascinate running cyanogen 6.2 and they are blown away. i tell them you cant do this on apple products. period. there is no customization. its either apples way or the highway. For people that like to customize and make the phone theirs in every way i recommend android, but for the douchebags that want an iphone because its an iphone...i say let them be sheep...apples digging its own grave by trying to sue samsung for something apple stole from them in the first place. yay apple...
