This update.zip will flash clockwork recovery, overwriting the need/ability to use the stock recovery folder with command in it.
For advanced users only.
v.8 Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?dvleg4oatkfxm7w
The credit for this all goes to Bekit for the biggest step forward on the Gtablet, and obviously Koush for the custom recovery to begin with. Roebeet packaged this update.zip.
Instructions:
1) Unpack download to root of sdcard. (Internals /sdcard, NOT /sdcard2)
2) Start tablet while holding volume + and power. (Let go when you see text come up saying entering recovery)
3) You will see a short installation and it will reboot.
4) Check the install by powering off, the powering on with volume+ and power
5) You should be greeted by a menu with Clockworkmod at the top
i have been using clockwork on my gtablet for several days now. it backs up and restores just like i would expect it too.
well done as usual.. props for all involved.
Works great no problems at all !!!
wishlist:
1. add SDCARD2 to the mount and storage section.
2. ... wait that is it.!
Should I be able to take this file and rename to update.zip, put it in the root of "sdcard" internal space, put the recovery folder in root directory too and then boot up with power + volume up to install this?

Or just extract the zip file supplied in the first post onto the sd card. Everything will go into its place. Then boot from recovery using power and volume+.
So, if I place the cwm update.zip and recovery folder in the root of sdcard (internal), then when I boot into recovery, CWM will show up instead? Just want to know if it really is that simple. Also, if I want to flash a new ROM (Like the zpad one), do I simply place the update.zip from that rom anywhere other than the root of "sdcard", and flash using CWM?
One last question, if I delete the CWM update.zip, is it like CWM was never placed on my g tab?
Am I the only one having trouble getting cwrecovery on the root of sd card? cant get this to run. i am a visual learner and reading how to do all this is helping me very little. if anyone would be willing to do a video or reference me to a link so i can learn to do all this, i would appreciate greatly. this is very frustrating tab stock!
hey this might help you get it installed..
plug your gtablet into your computer, then on the gtablet, click the "enable usb storage connection" button
then on your pc, open windows explorer, and open removeable drive F, the letter may be different for you.. it should show 13gb free on it, and there should be an android folder and a dcim folder.. that's the root of the storage inside the tablet.. it's the same as sdcard.. unzip the clockworkblahblah.zip to the root/top level directory of that removeable drive. then turn the tablet off. and then hold down the volume + button while powering it back on, it should install the clockworkmod recovery manager.. that's about it
jw52637 don't feel bad... I'm a visual learner as well.
uncola,
I followed your instructions and I saw the update install on boot up. Now I'm lost. I expected to see and application named ClockworkMod Recovery or something like that... but I did not. How do I know it is installed and how do I use it to back up my stock ROM? Also, do I remove the "update.zip" from the root directory or just leave it there?
Sorry for the questions but I want to learn how to do this so I can stop bothering you guys.

ClockWorkMod Recovery is the recovery system...so you have to boot your tab into recovery (hold volume + and power the tab up). If installed, you'll get the ClockWorkMod Recovery instead of the stock recovery system. You can make backups, do restores, install .zips, etc... from there.....then "reboot" the system to boot back to your normal system.
Thanks tcrews. I moved the update.zip from the root directory to a saved directory then rebooted holding the volume + key and it booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery. I chose back up and everything seemed to backup fine.
So if/when I install another ROM and I do a restore to the ROM I just backed up I should be right back to where I was at that time. I have used Titanium Backup to back up all my applications and settings and know I would have to restore them also.
I'm just wanting to understand how I can get back to "stock" so that I can get the automatic updates from Viewsonic.
Well i just tried it all again, and all worked very well. Thank you very much
Ok, I'm totaly new to this so please bare with me, having some troubles with my G tablet NOT booting so I cant access it through Windows to install CW to fix my tablet. How can I get the Files on the tablet? I can get it to attempt recovery but no luck. PLEASE help. I'm pulling my hair out here.

There is a physical reset button inside the device, or you can try ADB.
I cant get the recovery image to find update.zip
I have clockwork recovery gtab-cwm-v08 installed and renamed to update.zip in the root of the internal sd but when i boot into recovery it goes to the android screen then shows a triangle with a exclamation point, then reboots normally!
I rooted with z4root 1.2.1
I have superuser permission so am rooted!
Unrooted then rooted again figuring this might help!
Tried a few different clockwork recoveries
have no idea what the problem is! if anyone has any clue it would be appreciated!

Had that happen to me. What I did was run the CWM again into the gtab. Next reboot I had CWM insgtalled and working.
Hope that helps
CWM 0.8 is the one that I used and is working for me. I have the gTab w/the "original" partition scheme, and installed it by the original gTab update process.
If you're using newer CWMs I've read posts in the CM6b4 thread that newer CWM version seem to be causing problems for some people.
Also if you have a "newer" "batch" gTab w/a different partition map scheme you might want to check what the latest info is on the IRC channel, #tegratab on freenode IIRC. Might be quickest to ask for help there anyways, as it sounds like this probably isn't your problem.
Is it possible to flash roms directly from Rom Manager without having to start via recovery?
My question is because I cant start my phone in fastboot, recovery, bootloader etc. The screen turns all black if I try anything.
So in Rom Manager there is an option "Flash Rom from SD-card"...pretty much the same that you can see in recovery from clockworkmod. And if I click on it, then I can wipe data and cache also.
Is this a way to flash roms for me if I cant make it to recovery or start the phone in fastboot?
Yes you can flash roms directly from ROM Manager, that is how I do it atleast
nice, will test this! if it doesnt automaticly boots in recovery for the flashingprocess? Or does the rom manager creates a own recovery maybe?
It boots into Clockworkmod recovery I think

Yes it did! and cant boot into that!! Really this is a annoying thing for me!
And I cant run unrevoked again either because I cant boot into HBOOT, so cant install the android bootloader interface. AAAAHH!
Try installing a recovery from rom manager. If there is some problem with the original recovery, it might help. This works by placing the recovery image as 'update.zip' under your sdcard and rebooting. That will her flashed and HOPEFULLY you will have a working recovery.

Ensure you have the update.zip directly under your sdcard and go for a normal reboot. It should flash it and take you to recovery mode.

Have that, and have tryed different versions on the recovery, still only black screen for me when trying this!
Have you tried pressing the power button when in the black screen? I was caught unawares when the recovery mod boot and stays in the cloclworkmod image and not go to the options. I have to press the power button to reach the recovery mod options. I have run out of ideas, sorry.

Thanks for the effort! Have tryed it like 100 times, but cant make it into recovery! Have to take the battery out and restart the phone in normal mode. Thats all I can do, and have tryed all different ways to make it into recovery.
(from rom manager, voldown+power), restart-->recovery, restart-->bootloader)
same results every time...maybe works if I get a new battery or new sdcard or something!
Hey there, i did the oem unlock and flashed clockwork recovery and super user. Everytime i reboot my phone the clockwork recovery is just gone., Im coming from an evo so im used to holding the volume down button down at boot with the power button..can i do that to get into clockwork on my Nexus S?
Thanks, alright now how do i boot into recovery without using rom manager? like on my evo i would hold volume button down and hold the power button.... doesnt seem to work on the NS4G
hold volume up while powering up. will take you to bootloader screen, then select recovery option.
Okay after installing clockwork recovery using rom manager when i go to the recovery in fast boot and select it i get the little triangle with ! in the middle of it and a little android\
Edit: It seems like each time i flash it, i can only go to it once, the next time I go to it i get the triangle with the ! in it.
this happened to me too. take out the battery to power off, then power back on and boot, then reflash clockwork via rom manager, make sure you go to all clockworkmod recoveries, make sure you flash version 3.1.0.0...then launch bootloader again.
took me flashing recovery via rom manager 2 or 3 times for it to stick.

No i didnt. Every time i reboot it just disappears D:
also, did you try booting into recovery from the rom manager app after flashing? i was able to boot into recovery via app and fastboot.
update: i'm now getting the exclamation mark while trying to get to recovery. when i reflashed it one more time, i'm able to boot into via app and fastboot again. there's obviously something wrong with cwm recover as its not sticking all the time.
I have it working now.
Using this
BE SURE TO FLASH CLOCKWORK MOD FROM ROM MANAGER AND DO THIS IMMEDIATELY AFTER WITHOUT REBOOTING
At this point you have root, but your phone will continue to replace ClockworkMod Recovery on reboot. To prevent this, do the following:
1) Reboot your phone, and download the app "Root Explorer" from the Market
2) Open Root Explorer and navigate to the "etc" directory.
3) Tap on the gray box that says "Mount R/W"
4) Tap and hold on the file "install-recovery.sh" and rename this file to "install-recovery.sh.old"
5) Download the app "ROM Manager"
6) Open ROM Manager and choose "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". At this point you are all set .
I was just going to post that for you xD
Glad to see it working!
cool, glad you found it. idk why my recovery was sticking most of the time w/o that hack

Hello, i dont know why, but i formated all things in clockwork recovery (boot, system, data, cache, sdcard, sd-ext).
I can run on phone, but it turns to blue and pink collor off screen.
I tried to install rom with pink screen but, it just no install, just showing a pink screen and nothing.
Do you have unlocked bootloader (which software had had before)? If you have unlocked bootloader you can just put the image files in it and you will get recovery so you can install a custom ROM. If you have locked bootloader then you can try flashing offcial software...

Open clockworkmod, go to advanced, there choose reboot to recovery, and try to install it again.
I Noticed that there is a little bug that restarts the phone sometimes in the middle of the install if you don't reboot to recovery another time from inside the CWM-->advanced.
The bug also sometimes shows sdcard contents corrupted and gets fixed if you choose "reboot to recovery" option from CWM-->advanced.
I do this procedure every time before installing new rom in the latest geno cwm 5.0.2.7 recovery.

So apparently I have two different versions of ClockWorkMod Recovery on my Droid X. ROM manager says I have 5.0.2.0, but when I reboot into Recovery (via ROM Manager, or manually) it boots into CWM 2.5.0.8. I can then Flash the 5.0.2.0 zip, and use it normally, I just can't boot directly into it. I recently got a replacement Droid X off ebay because my screen developed a huge black blob in it, but it didn't have the same CWM weirdness going on..
Is there any way to get rid of the 2.5.0.8? Everything works correctly once I flash into 5.0.2.0, but it would be nice to be able to get there directly.
TIA

Both work, just you can't Restore backups made in 5.0.2.0, using 2.5.0.8.. So ever time I want to do a Back Up, or a Restore, I boot into Recovery and it loads 2.5.0.8, then I flash 5.0.2.0, then run my Back Up or Restore..
It all works, it's just a pain..
