Hey Just got my Z today and it great so far
Only thing i can't get my head around is how to type < and > on the keyboard ?
(Have the Scandinavian model)
I've only found it on the soft keyboard.
Numbers, page two.
Regards!
/Lars
You'd need to use some keyboard mapping to achieve this on the hardware keyboard, I think. Or perhaps get one of the programmable hardware keys to do these characters ?
There is 5 local characters on the Scandinavian Z and in Danish we only use the 3 of them, so can I somehow remap the two keys I'm not using ?

Didn't know about the lack of programmable keys. But yes, you should be able to re-map some of the others. There's a thread over in the dev forum about some keyboard remapping stuff for Scandinavian characters.

If you have the ALT button, hold that down, while "HOLDING DOWN" another key. Letters typically make symbols. J and K are < and >.
Works for me 100%.
Otherwise try FN while holding down J or K or any other key. Try it with shift as well, while holding down 3 buttons, the letter key last.

this worked for my on US G2 pressing and holding ALT and pressing and holding J which brought up 3 extra symbols on touchscreen to choose from, with "<" being one of them. thanks for the info, i originally tried just holding ALT only while just tapping J and it didnt do anything, need to hold both down.
Literally 3 threads below yours on the freakin front page of the forum is a multi-page thread over this EXACT thing:

Lol, I realize that, but it's not like he had to search or anything. Simply opening the G2 and Desire Z General subforum (where this thread is posted) and scanning the top 10 threads listed would have shown the original thread (even has the same symbols mentioned in the title). It probably took more effort to find the 'New Thread' button than it would have to find the existing thread. It's like walking down the street and throwing your trash on the ground *right next to* a trash can.
I have the Nordic model too.. It seems to me, that when I got the new OTA update, the < > ^ etc are finally available through FN + SYM on the hardware keyboard.. It wasn't available before this update

I've done some googlin' and talked to a few different people, but I still can't find an answer to this.
Is there any way to type an up caret (The ^ character) using the physical keyboard? I've tried long-pressing everything, and I found > and <, but not ^! >.<
I've searched and searched. You're not the only person that's missing the caret! There's a big group of us out here.
At least that can be fixed with a software update. I hope it's fixed on that vaporware-looking OTA...

The carat appears in the Android keyboard (not the physical). Press the number key (123) then press the ALT key. The ^ appears where the * was on the keyboard.
You're missing the caret, I'm missing the pipe (|grep "stuff" is made infinitely more annoying when having to bring up the software keyboard for one character).
I am stucking waiting for my Desire Z in the UK, but can't you assign it to one of the custom keys?
The pipe | could become a big issue for me as the main reason for a physical keyboard is for ssh.
I miss having quick access to it, too.
Hold down alt + j until a window comes up. The popup will let you chose the caret key. It's a bit of physical + virtual keyboard but it's better than having to close the phone to type the caret key.
Well the pipes there if you press alt then space see | but no caret. I'm suprised they have these though ≠≈∞±‰†‡ but no caret

Wait, how do you type < and >? I thought those were missing from the physical keyboard and the symbol popup -- had to close the keyboard and go pure virtual to type those.

It drives me nuts there are no '<' '>' symbols on the hard keyboard. When you press alt+space it brings up a popup of extra symbols. Anybody have an idea of how we can make this popup editable? I'm pretty sure its not tied to your IME because it doesn't change when I install a new one or use swype, etc.
I'm not sure where to look on this anyone have an idea?

hold alt+K for ], } and >
hold alt+J for [, { and <
hold alt+L for \
What about a "\"?
EDIT: Ah I see. The same works for "\" however only with the stock keyboard enabled. If you're using swift key, the key you're pressing just repeats.

I thought this was section for brainstorming mods... Where should I repost for better results? Also, alt+L just gives me ')' how do you cycle through them?
Edit: ok I see it is tied to the IME cause switching to a differnt one wouldn't let me cycle through like you explained, switching back to stock keyboard now I can. Guess that sums it up.

yeah I thought about making a little app to do that but hate to waste a quick key for that, although I do have an extra one right now. But I just put in a feature request with smart keyboard pro for them to make the symbols popup editable when pressing alt+space. Hopefully they will do it, shouldn't be to tough.
Just heard back from SmartKeyboard dev and he says the popup from pressing alt+space actually isn't tied to the IME and he can't override it. Still waiting back to hear if he know how to mod it. In the meantime back to the drawing board. Anyone know where this popup lives in ASOP?
I would like the quick keys to be the option. I never use them.
I would like a program or hack to remap the quick keys to something.
one would be switching WiFi on and off.
Perhaps I can find an app in the market that does just that with one click, and i can then set that quick key to that prog?
I'll have to look.
ps. Corylulu, your back down to number 4 again
i think i looked through every alt+key hold combo, but i could not find a ^ ?

Yeah, I know. Really I still consider it number 3 since the 2nd and 3rd is the same guy.
So it doesnt seem as though there is a thread like this for the Epic.
I figured this would be a good place to list a bunch of random things you've found while "tinkering" with you Epic 4G.
Example:
While in Camera mode, if you hit the power button it locks the camera. No buttons can be pushed until you "Unlock" the camera by pressing the power button once more. I figured this allows you to keep the camera app open without snapping random shots, so that when you are ready the camera app is readily available.
This same method works in the video player function...I found this out cus I have a 2 year old that loves to watch his cartoons on my phone. Well he always tends to touch the screen and it usually interrupts the vid (streaming)...so now I just lock the video player (push the power button while video is playing) and now he can touch it all he wants and it wont interrupt the vid!
What else do you guys/gals know about this AWESOME phone!!???
-MaD
I just found out if you workout with your epic resting against your skin, you're risking it might get water damaged.
Here's something:
If you press down on the notifications tab at the top of your phone, and slide it to either the left or right, you can toggle the brightness (if it is set to MANUAL, and you can do this under the phone's settings).

Confirmed. Wow I Just tried this and it's pretty amazing! +11111111
Here's another one that's semi-useful.
This will only work with the stock SWYPE keyboard. Now there are some complications usually when trying to copy/paste text with androids. If you have a keyboard, you can easily hold "shift" and swype across the text you are trying to copy.
Well with the SWYPE keyboard, if you do not want to open up the physical keyboard, you have the option of pressing the "i" button at the bottom (next to SYM) and if you hold that and swype on over to SYM and back to the "i" button, a menu with several different commands will show up. I'm not too familiar with how to use it, but I know it gives you the option to copy/paste, move up and down and select text fairly easy.

No need to swype back to the "i" button. Swyping from the "i" button over to the SYM button brings up the same options. Gives you arrow keys which are pretty awesome to use. Also, if you swype from the "i" button over to the "F" key, it brings up a nice keypad for you to input numbers/symbols.
Also, while on the topic of swyping, here are some other cool things:
If you want to capitalize a letter, you swype from that letter off of the swype keyboard entirely and then continue swyping. So if you wanted for some reason to type CaT, you would swype from the "c" key off of the keyboard entirely and then over to the "a" key and then over to the "t" key and then off the keyboard entirely again.
If you want to hit a double letter, like the two o's in Google, you swype from the "g" over to the "o" and swirl around on it for a second and then continue swyping the rest of the word. The swirling around doubles whatever key you are swirling over.

just swiping from the swype(or i/info depending on your version/rom/theme) key to sym alone will open that layout.
heres another swipe shortcut
start at the swype/info key then swipe diagonaly to the upper right and let go when your past the keyboard layout.... This will open the numerical keypad.
last one it got (that i can think of at the moment)
you can usually simulate a battery pull/force reset if your softlocked by holding cam+vol_up+power... saved me some hassle when i had a hard case on my epic many times when experimenting with roms/kernel/tweaks.
UPDATE:
muyoso has apparently tapped into my brain and beat me to it LOL... and sombish... yeah u can just swipe from the info to the f and get numerical keypad also

btw langers, a little off topic but... have u tried 2degrees free facebook "zero" service??? when i try i get an error saying its not available from my carrier?? Just wondering whether its cos i'm not using my original stock rom
Facebook 0 works for me so you could be right
k thanks for that
Hey guys,
The reason you cant get onto FB 0 service is because you are using the APN internet.
This does not require a proxy and therefore o.facebook cant parse your mobile number to confirm you are indeed with 2degrees.
Try editing you APN and throwing 118.148.001.118 in the proxy and 8080 in the port.
If that doesn't work activate your WAP profile (it'll be called '2degrees') and see if that works.
If youre still having trouble give 2deg a call on 0800 022 022 and they'll sort you.
hope this helps
I'm using internet API and it works fine with no intervention/editing from me
YES!!!
cheers for that, worked a treat, didnt even realise those settings were even there, lol fairly new to the smartphone thing!!
i was using the internet apn as you said and once i switched it to 2deg all was good

No it's not a complaint
Just too eager for a solution of the keyboard cursor mover
Well the good news is, after hours of searching finally found a solution of sorts...the bad news is, it ain't free $3.75. BUT there is a free trial version, with nag screen. I'm using it now and have only been nagged once.
The cursor can be moved via arrow keys which are enabled thru the extensive settings menu.
The arrow keys up, down, left, right sit at the bottom of the keyboard and make editing easy peasy. As u can imagine it does take up a fair bit of yr screen and the keys are slightly smaller but I think there is a calibration setting 4 that.
What I do like is upper case numbers and symbols, so no need to change screens.
Prediction works really, really well 2.
A heap of languages are also supported.
All in all not a bad little k/b, so head 2 the market an check it out. Smart Keyboard Trial.
Oh, btw swype also has arrow keys 4 cursor control if that spins ye wheels!

I think he meant long pressing menu brings up search because there is no dedicated search button.
I'd be interested in a solution for this as well.
I'm inclined to think there is a way to make long press back bring up the KB for rooted devices only, and might already exist from SGS1 complaints. Samsung took a page from Apple, by which I mean they made a form over function compromise.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't get how they made a form over function compromise like you said.
Unless I am missing something, I am assuming there is a field to type in whenever someone needs the keyboard. so what exactly would be the need for a long press on the back button, if you can just touch the field which brings the keyboard up?
Can someone explain to me if I missed something?
Sorry i ment that the galaxy s 2 doesnt have a dedicated searchbutton. Samsung decided to use a longpress on the menubutton as the searchbutton, so you cannot bring up the keyboard with the longpress menubutton. Sorry for the confusion!
And now an explenation for the question "why would you need it?":
If I want to play a HTML5 or a flash game within the Browser, where a keyboard (or only the arrowkeys) is needed, i can't bring it up without the "longpress menukbutton"...
