I have official 2.1-update1 firmware on my Hero GSM.
I tried both Androot 1.6.2-beta5 and 1.5 - both say that cannot root my device.
Any ideas?
TIA,
Vitaly

thank you! so there is no magic one-click solution?
I had the same problem once my phone had come back from HTC for service.
I found that the method on the VillainRom website worked very easily:
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?99-Rooting-the-2.1-HTC-Hero
Hope this helps!
sorry, looks like my browser did not refresh and someone had already replied...
the solution is almost as easy as "one click", just involves using your PC a bit.
Good luck

Damn, I have read so many guides and ways to root my Android, but sincerely, they are so different I'm not trusting on any of it. Does anyone know how to correctly root the HTC Hero with Linux? Most of the guides are for Windows, and the one for Linux have some parts missing.

Hi, there's several rooting methods available. They depend on your installed ROM, and which version it is. The three main are
- FlashRec (for 1.5 ROMs)
- Goldcard (for 1.5 ROMs and 2.1 OTA'd phones)
- New PossibleGSMRoot.zip method posted for 2.1 ROMs
The first and last should be possible on Linux, although I'm not familiar on Goldcard method in linux
download rom manager from the market, then scroll to the bottom and flash alternate recovery

Ok that sounds great, I have 2.1, but I don't know anything about my rom or if it's an OTA'd phone. Could you explain me, and show me a guide for both goldcard and GSMroot?
Thanks.

how did you get 2.1? did you download it from the web or did you get an over the air upgrade? or did the phone come with 2.1 pre-installed? if you got it through a over the air update your pretty much out of luck as the goldcard method only works on windows and the flashrec method only works on certain 1.5 phones, if you got it from an ruu from the web then you could try the GSMroot method, if your phone came pre-installed with 2.1 then Im not sure if the GSMroot method would work or not but it would probably be worth a shoot, the GSMroot method can be found here:http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
oh and instructions for the goldcard method and the flashrec method can be found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253&highlight=goldcard but as i said flashrec only works on certain 1.5 roms and goldcard only works on windows
I installed it as an official update from the phone. I know there's a method to downgrade, I can get a computer with Windows so I could try goldcard. Or could I try the GSMroot?

if you updated from the phone itself then your best bet would be the goldcard method, the GSMroot was designed for people who upgraded using an RUU file, It may still work though, but I haven't seen anyone confirm that.

So you're saying that I should get the computer with Windows and try goldcard, right?

Yes, that is the method that is most likely to work correctly

Ok, then I think I'll try that.
Thanks!
The ruu method works fine as well, even if you used ota.
Tested over at the VillainROM site btw.
Was just about to make a thread just like this. I'm from Finland and updated my Hero using OTA. After updating I've read so many articles about why I should root my Hero. So ever since I've been trying to google a comprehensive guide. But I always ended up in a dead end or a guide intended for CDMA Hero or something else.
Now I finally have rooted my Hero with PossibleGSMRoot.zip method
Thank you so much.
I have to unroot my Aria.
There are a million threads about unrooting (most of which are outdated) and the rest don't work on macs.
Any advice?
I have a mac and I used unrevoked 3.2.1. If you google unrevoked its the first link...then there's a picture of an HTC aria, all you have to do is follow the simple directions and in one click you're aria is rooted without any problems at all. It's so simple. I don't use linux or know anything complicated about phones or software and this worked great for me. Good luck. There is a thread here also called rooting unrevoked one click. Take a look for more answers.

The OP was asking about unrooting using a Mac, not rooting.
I used that to root my phone.
Now I am looking to UN-root it.
Thanks, you.
Hi, this is my first post. I bought a wildfire as my friend had one with mod7 on it, which looked smart. Didnt realise until after I bought one that the wildfires running android 2.2 seem impossible to root! After reading lots of bullsh*t threads I thought it was impossible. Until i finally managed to root mine and install mod7!
You have to get s-off to start with, which i did at my local market man, who used his XTC clip. I believe, like it or not, this is the only way at the moment to s-off a wildfire running 2.2.1. Once this is done i followed this guide which downgrades to 2.1 then roots the wildfire using an old version of unrevoked, then upgrades to 2.3 rom. Hope this helps someone else....
-- you'll have to google as im not allowed to post links...
google "security xploded wildfire jailbreak"
and the top link there should be the security xploded website with the guide i followed.
Sam
Sorry, but, using an XTC Clip on the 2.2.1 Wildfire to get S-OFF and then Root is a process which was known a very long way back. The sticky thread here shows it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939801
What people want is a free software based solution, much like Unrevoked for Android 2.1, which is yet impossible.
Ah well, this is the only technique which i could ever get to actually work!
I want to root my phone, and am new at this. Where can I find an EXTREMELY simple youtube tutorial on what to use to root my MT4G running gingerbread 2.3.4. Any suggestions? If so, please email me at mytouch4g2011 (at) gmail (.) com
Thank you very much in advance.

I don't think there's a way to root 2.3.4
Maybe Gingerbreak? But never seen it.
Or you could use the PD15IMG.zip to go back to FROYO then use the other two methods to root like root.sh or gfree.
I too am new at this, however I have been told you can't root if you are running 2.3.4. I've heard it will be weeks but again, I'm new and am going by what I've been told.

I don't think you can downgrade back to Froyo from 2.3.4 either. I tried and it stated the software was older that the current version.
Please, try searching before posting additional thread on the subject. There are 3 threads each day with the same question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Title says it all...Finally thinking about rooting, but I dont know it its possible yet since I got the 2.3.4 update. Can someone point me in the right direction please? All the posts I found are kind of old.
Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206930 must have S-OFF before you update to 2.3.4 or you will have to downgrade to 2.2 turn S-OFF then patch again to 2.3.4 then root...
Damn, no other way huh? I don't feel like downgrading, guess I'll wait till there is another way...lol. Thanks for the response!

Desire Z 2.3.3 ROOT
Hi,
I am using EU version of G2 (desire Z) with htc official gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM. I am also new in this so downgrading to 2.2 isn't option for me. Does anybody knows if there will be some simplyfied way to root desire z 2.3.3 (one click root or something like that) somwhere in near future.
Thanks for reply!

Well considering that there isn't even a reliable one-click root for the 2.2 release (and even farther from one-click for the European version) I'd highly doubt that you're going to see a one-click for the 2.3 release any time soon, if at all.
Just because you're new doesn't mean that downgrading isn't an option for you! Just do your research and follow the detailed guides and you'll be fine. It may take some time for you to build up some confidence to do it, but when its done you'll be glad you took the time to learn a lot about the device as you learned to root it the hard way.

i'm afraid there's no other way for now, you have to downgrade to older version which had root method already.
Not a temproot? I think I have seen a topic for temproot of G2, but no responses from anybody who has tried, so I don't want to be first to try.
I wish only to remove annoying ADS, all the rest is fine with 2.3.4.
Because you said that I might have to wait a long time to get one click solution I have decided to give it a try and root my phone:
firstly I have downgraded my software with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
and than root it with this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision
and than install Virtuous 2.0 ROM with Rom Manager
I had no problems and everything works nice now.
But still I would like to change some things on my phone and I hope someone could give me some directions how to do it.
1) firstly I would like to delete/hide stock battery icon from notification bar becazse I use ZDBox to monitor battery. I have found this tread on this forum but I am not shure if this method works for Desire Z with this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740502
Does prhaps anyone knows how to do that with Virtuous 2.0 ROM on Desire Z
2)secondly I would like to ask you which ROM do you suggest to try out.
I really like how MIUI ROM looks like and how much free RAM you get with this rom but as I was reading comments about it it seem that there is no landscape orientation in this ROM. Does this issue apply only for launcher or are systam apps like sms app or email app also only in portrait mode.
thanks for answers and ideas

1) you can use the uot kitchen to create a theme with whatever battery icon you like.
2) i would suggest cm7, by far the best rom in my opinion, fast and stable and always have the theme chooser to change it up. if your looking for a sense rom though i would go with the synergy port.

as stated before you will need to downgrade it. its pretty easy to do as long as you follow the guide
