Why do people say use root explorer? - Epic 4G General

It's console vs X thing, DOS vs Windows. Whatever people prefer.

It's a matter of convenience. You can go wait in line for concert tickets or just roll out of bed and order them online when they go on sale. One way saves you money, one way saves you time. Either way, you still get to see the show.
Root Explorer is certainly more idiot-proof. I use it...just cut and paste the files I want removed and stick em in a backup folder on my card. I've done it both ways, and the reality is that I am just a bit too lazy to spend the time doing it manually.

Well probably because it was an old method used on android phones and people got used to saying it....
That said, doesn't terminal emulator require 2.2? (cause I rememebr looking for it in the market on 2.1 and couldnt find it)

I just downloaded it now on 2.1.

[Q] trick the market

is there a way to trick the market to make it think my phone is a better phone? what i mean is, can i make the market think im running say, a droid x, or an incredible, since thats htc, so i can download apps i wouldnt normally be able to? i remember back when i couldnt see angry birds and it was the worst, it would be nice to be able to see every app, and try out the higher end ones that the developers leave us out of.
i seem to remember something with a build.prop file being changed but i can't find anything about it
Android app devs exclude lower end android phones because, they can't run their app at full potential and that would take away from the experience of using that app.
but with a rooted and oc'd phone i would think theres a way to do it, and run them fine
Sent from my FroShedYo V10-ERIS using XDA App
if you google [app name].apk you can find many apps.
It's not always about CPU speed or rooting, many of the limitations of this phone app-wise seem to come from the version of ARM processor it uses.
You can only push the poor eris to do so much.
As the above poster stated though, google the apps you're looking for. You'll find downloads pretty easy (aside from paid ones), but just because you find them doesn't mean the install will be successful or that it'll run properly/at all.
I would like to see if many of the apps would work though, there are some paid apps that I really could use.

Download Eris Market Fix in the Market and run the patch. After rebooting you should be able to search for any app.

that was the first thing i tried, and it has been working for most apps, but theres still a few paid apps i can't see ie:splashtop remote desktop, some of the paid keyboards, etc
any other ideas? i really dont want to pirate an app someone worked hard on
You need to also keep in mind that the X, Incred, Fascinate, ect. have a higher resolution. The Eris wont be able to run apps designed for them downloaded from the market simply because the resolution is different. You would have to upload the apk's to your computer and actually port them to the Eris.
as for the build.prop... you'd want to find the following line: "ro.build.fingerprint="
i've provided two (2) examples below... first being from an HTC Incredible running a 2.2 ROM... second being from a stock Eris (2.1 ROM).
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys (Incredible)
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/htc_desirec/desirec/desirec:2.1/ERD79/185970:user/release-keys (Eris)

Just bought an Atrix.

This is my first Android phone. I've previously owned the iPhone and a BlackBerry. I've sense ditched both for this Atrix. It's about a week old now.
I was heavy into jailbreaking my iPhone and modding it to how I wanted it to be, but this Android stuff is confusing the hell out of me. I just don't get it. I need the most remedial breakdown anyone can give me. I've been searching the web for days in and out trying to find something.
People have some really great information, though! That's how I came across this site. I hope to find more answers, although my mind almost exploded when I read through this thread.
Anyway, how do you like your Atrix? Any tips on making this device my own? I still feel like I should be back with an iPhone for whatever reason. LOL. It feels I'm too late to step into the Android world. I should have jumped on with the G1.
Oh, and any remedial breakdowns of rooting is welcomed! LOL!
Check out the ginger break thread for a nice break down. (really easy)
Enable swype (long press text entry)
Inquire about freezing some of the bloat with titanium backup
Start exploring the market
Download some emulators and play classic video games from the ol childhood
podcasts if your into that thing
Flash! Go to browser settings and change plug ins to (on demand) for quicker browsing and flash at your disposal!
Wait until you get uncapped upload speeds.. Oh man are you gonna love this phone!

First you are going to need sbfs and rsdlite in case something goes wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you will need android sdk. Installing this takes awhile btw.

you might also want to learn some basic adb and busybox commands.

then you can root your phone with that thread you posted. If I think of anything else, I will post more.

I have no idea what these instructions mean when they're telling to extract certain things in certain places, open certain things, install apk sbf and abc. Exaggerating, of course.
It's been over 7 hours and I haven't gotten any clarity.
Moved from iphone 3gs to my first android (Atrix) also.
I gotta tell you modding jailbroken iphones is very easy and very limited compared to Android phones. Even a stock outta-the-box android phone.
It's probably something like "want even more customizations = more work" for you with an Android.
Gold luck.

Man, I've noticed that! I thought I knew a hell of a lot when it came to this stuff, but this Android rooting has made me realize that I'm somewhat of a novice. It's never taken me this long to grasp some computer stuff.
I also think it's because I bought my Atrix at full retail price and I don't have insurance. (I have a dealer line with AT&T. They made me provide my own phone.) I don't want to waste that much money if I brick my phone.

I'm going to keep reading and reading because I was referred to gingerbreak before I registered here. That's actually how I got on this site. It seems solid, I just have to figure it out. Reading up on terminology has made it clear to me what an ADB is. I just don't know how to use it.
Question: When I open this ADB file in the SuperOneClick zip, it opens a command prompt, displays some words and junk, an then disappears.
What am I supposed to do with this?
(I'm currently browsing this thead. I just don't have enough posts to post there.)

That is why I like using the adb from android sdk. Never liked doing it from oneclick even when I had a captivate. If you have android sdk, you can open a command prompt and cd to adb's folder and use the commands there. You can also make a bat file to make it easier.
If you don't know how to make a bat file, use notepad and type this
@echo off
cmd /k "cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
and save it as .bat
Note if you have 64 bit windows, it will be program files (x86)

Rom integrated ad blocking...

Im running chris41g(?)s modded stock, and I was wondering if there was a way that I could integrate the awesome adblocking of the big roms myself... messing with i GUESS putting together my own rom, and this is the one thing of all I am missing the most. I guess I am getting old, just want a simple rom theme-wise, but love the tweaks... anyone wanna help? Trade secret? If its something relatively simple like using 7zip and changing a value, or something to adb push, I can do it... just dont know what method you use, and would love to be able to just do it myself. Gonna hit up chris to throw it in his rom, but id like to do it myself too... any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
You could include adfree app in the system/app location of the ROM. OR, you can use K0nane's method (which I am even unsure how it works.) ha

I hope that this isn't starting point for blocking another services on rooted phones (like whole market)..
Seems like some bad logic... They don't want you renting a movie if your phone is rooted, since you might pirate it. However, you would think if one is technical enough to root their phone (or even know that it is an option), they probably know enough to pirate a movie without paying for it in the first place...
Something tells me this isn't Google's idea. I think they've had their arms twisted.
Wonder how an internet connection can tell phone is rooted .

What he said. Movie studios and record companies are a money grabbing greedy lot who will do anything to continue filling their pockets.
I highly doubt this is Google. It goes against their ENTIRE WAY of thinking/operating.
Google don't encourage rooting, but they certainly don't condemn it - because that's one of the joys of open source development.
Google "making" this decision is like Apple, forgetting to patent one of it's products/possible products...and we all know that will never happen!
As (below/above/previous post said) it has to be legalities with the studio companies.
I don't think it's possible to detect you're rooted. If you have root, you have full control over your OS, so you can make some app think it's installed on non-rooted device. No problem, really.

It's easy to detect root if OS will let you detect it ;-) E.g. you could look for "su" command or Superuser.apk, but it should be possible to hide them for specific app. Also it should be possible to crack an app, so it won't look for root at all.

Yeah. I'm also sure you could move su to another name, and refactor Superuser.apk to use another app name. Then you could create a symlink for su to the new binary, and use a service or daemon to remove it when a particular event occurs.
Or, they could simply be checking ro.secure, which is set in the initramfs...

[Q] My Xperience with PLay

Ok guys. Just got my Xperia Play 2 days ago. Mastered the iphone os and want to explore the android os. So far my main question is what is rooting and why I should root my phone, what benefits I will have for doing this. On the iphone for example i had free games that usually you have to pay for (don't mind paying) and themes.
I'm looking for users opinions not links on some google searches. that i can do myself.
Also looking forward to get psp games on the play.

rooting is nothing like jailbreaking, and it has noting to do with warez, people root to gain read/write access to the /system/ directory on there device, this allows them to run apps that wouldnt ususally work on there device, it also lets them remove bloatware (preinstalled applications) and theme there android, rooting is usually a precursor to flashing custom roms too
I also am very new to android but am learning fast.
I've rooted my Play (Used gingerbreak, DEAD EASY!!)
I've paid for the full launcherPro, and also placed a request on their forum for the feature of locking the phone when you slide the phone closed.
However, I have NEVER used a custom ROM, and I am very skeptical. I had a Samsung Omnia HD i8910 with Symbian, and I flashed new firmwares to this because Orange just didn't update the damn thing so I unbranded it.
I have also removed some bloatware with a file manager app (plenty around) whilst having root access.
I also have app2sd to move apps to SD, but I have to admit only a handful have gone on to it. I have not yet done the adb command to default all future apps to SD.
I am keeping a close watch on this forum for any sign of updates/upgrades/custom ROMs. I like the idea of new themes and faster phone, but I would hate to lose ANY of the original functionality, I would feel robbed.
This is my first android phone too. Was unsure about rooting at first but im glad i did. After rooting with gingerbreak (took like 40 seconds) I installed titanium backup (no need for apps2sd, the phone itself can put apps on the sd and the stuff the phone cannot move, Titanium backup can e.g The preloaded games, now under 1mb instead of 30mb). Removed all the crap from the phone using the safe apps to remove thread. The phone now runs faster loads more ram.
If i was to give a reason to root. It would be adfree from the market. Best app ever. Hated ads on the free apps and i have not got a credit card to use on the market (yet lol)
Its seems though if you update to 2.3.3 you cannot root anymore. Google has fixed the exploit used by gingerbreak.

iPhone jailbreaking allows you to run custom software (kinda like homebrew emulators and such) not originally designed to work on the iphone.
Rooting as mentioned above is not this.
Custom software can run on Android phones without the need to root. All those emulators etc will work on any Stock Android phone.
Android phones give you read/write access to sd card directories. Rooting basically gives you root (phone memory) read/write access.
This is useful because it allows you to install custom roms on your phone (sort of like customised versions of the operating system), get rid of bloatware (for example, i deleted all my vodafone pre-installed software which was basically crap) and more excitingly overclock your phone.
Installing new roms and overclocking will require extensive programming knowledge, but luckily the guru's on xda normally produce their own versions which us mere mortals can download and use.
No custom Roms or the ability to overclock the Xperia Play has to my knowledge been released to us yet. YET.
For now, root your phone, install titanium, get rid of bloatware, partition your sd card, and move all your games to your sd card to free up as much phone memory as possible.
Change your sd card cache size to 1024 to improve phone speed.
And wait for the custom rom and overclocking goodness that im sure will be available within the next few months.
Hope this post helped, i too was a complete noob and just picked a few things up along the way from reading here and there
edit - Rooting is safe for a noob to do. Other stuff such as installing roms can brick your phone rendering it useless if you do not know what you are doing. READ THOROUGHLY before you do anythingslightly advanced. And sorry to say, but there are no psp emulators that i know of. You will not be able to play PsP games. Sucks, i know

You can move unmovable apps to the sd card by using link2sd, which will only work if you partition your sd card.
There might be other ways, such as manual commands, but i've never tried that way.

Link2sd is diffrent, it moves the .apk's to an sd-ext, then creates a symlink.

What are you talking about? I just thought it was funny how they call it gingerbrake but it is not jailbrake. You people have no sense of humor at all.
I do contribute here and androidforums. Gee you people need a valium or something.

Thanks for saying this. I have been using titanium for a while but never knew it could move un-movable apps to the sd card.
The way i found out how to do it was batch moving in the menu you bring up with the menu button.
Appswap (paid version only) claims that it is the only program on the market that can do this. But know i know different !
Thanks
i just long hold the app and click "move to sd"
