Last questions before jumping :) - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I have an english o2 HD2.
So the ROM is too old to be used. So I need to install a new ROM with a new Radio
My plan is to use
ChuckyROM GTX + CHT 1.8.5 - 23128 ~ 2.10.1
Radio 2.12
question 1 : at this stage my HD2 is no more under warranty, correct?
question 2: I can still use it as a "normal" HD2, correct?
I dont want to start the "best build" war but I am looking for in order:
Phone (I am still using it for calling, incredible)
Microsoft Exchange push email
fast Internet (wifi + 3/4g)
GPS
SMS
Apps
the rest would be nice but not important
Camera
MMS
BT
I tried to look at the different builds but it seems difficult for a newbie to compare/find the correct one for him (NOT THE BEST, just the one for me)
Also when everything is done (and hopefully work) I can still use either WM or Android.
Question 3: if both are sync with my exchanger server, I can have email/contact etc on both OS?
Question 4: If I read correctly, SMS are not shared between OS?
thanks a lot

[iPAQ-91x June 2009] BR is back! WM6.1 (21042) and WM6.5 (21815) updates

I've released a new build - 21820 - fixes most problems. Get it!
News:
Montecristo's fix for WM6.5 hardware keyboard issues.
Coming in July version of WM6.5:
- updated to build 21820
- keyx's suggested A2DP fix
- Montecristo's keyboard fix
Hey y'all,
Bet you didn't think I'd get this done before my earlier WM6.5 ROM expires at the end of the month, eh? WM6.5 build 21815 is the newest leaked build and is RTM quality; it has no known expiry timebomb.
I present to you the following June 2009 releases for the iPAQ 910c/912c/914c Business Messenger:
WM6.1 21042br0609 (cooked last-minute without testing - anyone?)
WM6.5 21815br0609
Both ROMs feature HP's newest firmware base, meaning increased max volume and other fixes. I have removed the following OEM junk:
- Cyberon Voice Commander
- iPAQ Tips, Help & Support
- HP Photosmart Mobile (and screensaver)
- Snapfish uploader
- HP custom IE homepage
- HP Today theme (and other customizations)
- Google Maps (old)
- Goolge Search (old)
Also the WM6.5 releases remove:
- iPAQ DataConnect
(...since the new WM6.5 AutoConnect feature does the same thing)
Both ROMs contain the following little additions:
- NumBattery
- GPS Viewer
- Backlight Controller 0.9.5.2
Once I get around to making some new OEM packages for my favourite freeware apps, I'll bundle those in the "m" series next month:
WM6.1 21042br0709m "motherload" - pending
WM6.5 21815br0709m "motherload" - pending
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLASHING:
1. Get a microSD card sized 2 GB or lower (SDHC won't work) and format it with regular FAT filesystem. Copy my FLASH.DIO to the root of the card. Insert card into your device.
2. Put your device into SDLoader mode by holding VOLUP+OK(button on right side) and pressing RESET. Make sure your battery has a decent charge (over 50%) and isn't connected to any USB charge or sync cable (or else your device will just go into RUU mode).
3. Watch the magic... SDLoader will check the file integrity, flash to your device ROM, do a clean reboot (can take a minute longer than usual) and then go into the "Welcome to Windows Mobile, tap here to continue" stuff.
4. If you run into any problems, repeat steps 1 through 3 with a FLASH.DIO that has worked before (i.e. you can make one from HP factory ROM update using Paloma's instructions posted here)

welcome back, god Ben!!!
just flashed Monte's rom yesterday, so maybe flash your one bit later~
the 91x is truly becoming unbeatable among all the qwerty wm phones!!! rock on!!!
WoW!
Great job! I'm using your WM 6.5
I've just a little problem with the Titanium Weather, doesn't work :S
No weather icons at all. Any suggestion about that?
just running on your 6.5 now..
first impression? damn good!! (it also my 1st experience using 6.5)
oke here's some glitch i found :
-everytime i type using keyboard there is some delay in somewhat the same like i type using a keypad on my 610.. and it's kind a annoying to me coz, sometime if type an email address(or a sentence) after i type @(or a space) and i continue to type without waiting the half-underscore disappear, the cursor came back again to the first word of the sentence (or after the @) when the half-underscore is disappear. for example i always typing [email protected] but this problem giving me result [email protected] (if i type mail fast enough).
- and the capslock or function indicator near the keyboard is not showing at all
- the device is restarting my itself. here's the condition : i'm pushing the cpu clock to 624mhz (PHM), using wcdma network, and loading google using IE6.. and the device is going off...
another condition : every setting is normal, i watched a movie on coreplayer, and got an incoming call... and the device went off instead of freeze..
but despite all the problems above, i still enjoying your 6.5, but the device is becoming less productive...
ohoh,, can you give me a solution how to change screen orientation without restarting the device?
and once again i'm thanking you very very much for you Ben..

I couldn't get it to work either, and thought it was something I was doing. Hmm. I'll look into that.

The keyboard is buggy for me too sometimes; I have no idea why. These OEM packages are taken directly from the new HP update. Has anyone experienced this behaviour on any other 91x roms? I also can't explain the capslock/numlock indicator... it is a DLL that I am still including just like the stock ROM, but maybe it also relies on stuff from the HP Customization package?
Device restarting itself... that has not happened to me and I've been running this ROM for a few days now. Are you sure your battery connection isn't loose?
Can anyone else confirm these issues and/or confirm if they are present in Montecristo's ROMs? I think he tends to take his SYS directly from the keyx kitchen, whereas I'm usually porting a release from Da_G or somebody else on ppcgeeks.
Hi,
I'm using your ROM, I haven't that problem!! Keyboard is normal!
I solved the problem with the weather, was a server problem with accu weather!!
hey BR,
Yeah, the keyboard bug is present in Mc's ROM too ... I'll give yours a try, I like your style!
Cheers,
John

Thanks. I just tried out mine and the keyboard was fine... but I've experienced that from time to time, even on the HP Factory roms. Maybe HP still needs to work on their keyboard driver a bit?
I am glad you've returned! OEM hp which building are you using?

I'm using the OEM extracted from HP's most recent ROM update, BIOS 1.20.09 (21 May 2009)
...but I removed a number of files and registry entries to take out most of the HP branded stuff. Feel free to use osnbtool to extract my ported XIP from 21815br0609 if you are planning to build your own 21815.
Hi Ben!
I'm looking forward to trying your WM 6.5 build for the first time (first time using a cooked ROM, actually!) on my 914c, but I noticed that you mentioned using BIOS 1.20.09. When I clicked through to the link to the HP website, this was listed as being compatible only with the 910c, with SKU ID FB168AA#ABA.
My SKU ID is FB052AA#ABB, would installing this ROM cause any problems? The latest OEM firmware HP have for my model is 1.01.01 dated 28th April 2009, yours is more recent but I'm not sure if my phone will run with it.

I'm not sure... but I think you should try, since I'm only updating the OS portion of the ROM anyway. If things don't work out for some reason, you can always flash back to your own Factory ROM using either DNW or the SD Loader (Paloma has posted on this); somebody reportedly flashed a 61x ROM to their 91x and was able to get it working again that way.
My assumption thus far is that there are no hardware differences between the 910c, 912c and 914c that require specific OS roms.
Okay, I'll try it out later on tonight and post here if/when I manage. Thanks!

Hmm. 1.20.xx is only available from hp for the 910c. For the 914c the latest update is 1.01.01. The legend is the same for both updates: "fixes keyboard lockup issue and audio quality"
BTW, Montecristo does not recommend to use the 1.20.xx version of his ROM, he still uses 1.01.01 (which seems to be more compatible).
He uses SYS folder from keyx 614 kitchen but boot.rgu from HP 1.01.01.
Once more, if you want to fully update your phone (Modem part, Bootloader, etc) go to this thread, works fine:

It's great BR is back in town for more cooking!
I am still figuring out how to modify the hardware keyboard layout using the registry. No success. Only AEKmap (ae.inc.ru) seems to help...
hi
first I must say tnx 4 the rom and 4 your work
I have tested your rom and I have some issues
1 I-go8.3 will not load up (stop after installation –need sr 2 releases but will not load at any way)
2 keyboard, have issue unlike anything I have seen
sometimes if u type a dot then a letter the cursor will go back one step
(I think there is like t9 dll or something that gets in the way)
3 rom is real nice (good looking ) but a lot slower if compared 2 Montecristo
expired rom (u have more apps/plugins but looks like it is more then apps difference )
4 sometimes rom freeze
5 sometime tmail will not open and u will get sounds like stuck recording (DJ iPAQ) sr will stop this sounds and then u can enter tmail o.k.
6 I use opera mini as main explorer don’t know way but u cannot log into forum (like xda …) at all website I have tested user name will be o.k. but password will not enter the field (stay blank)
What I must point out is that radio connection and auto data setup is great
igo and opera mini are important apps 4 me
do u have a fix 4 this issue or know a way….?
Tnx 4 the rom I like it
BR,
6.5 is running smooth, thanks! I have tested every 6.5 release out there and unlike Erezyad I haven't noticed major speed differences between them. My 914c is heavily used for both business and private.
I like this release a lot as it is the most vanilla, neutral and well balanced.
Thanks again,
John

I have no idea what the issue with i-go and opera mini is; I don't have i-go but will test opera mini. It is java (as you know) and should be more or less isolated from the OS, so that's really weird.
The keyboard issues... might possibly be a result of me using a 910c-specific OEM base while you have a 912 or 914, but I doubt it. I haven't experienced the jumpy cursor lately, but I can tell you that I used to get it once and a while, even on the default HP factory ROM. Montecristo and I both use the keyboard driver/files supplied by HP, so I don't know what the problem could be. Personally, I suspect that we're encountering a physical hardware defect in these units - wherein errant d-pad keypresses are being registered when you press other keys sometimes. Try disabling word completion and word suggestions - I've found that improves performance a lot.
I'm not familiar with the ipaq dj (what is that?) and the tmail problems you describe.
As for the overall speed of the ROM, you are right that I have included almost all SYS packages from the generic WM6.5 installation (except for Autoupdate, SampleMusic, SQM, WelcomeCenter and WindowsLive). I think keyx and Montecristo (who just uses whatever SYS is in keyx's kitchen, I think) omit Enterprise, IPSECVPN and Transcriber. I kept those in because they actually seem useful for some people. However, I think my ROM has a bit less of HP's junkware than the others'. To me the biggest impact on speed is free RAM, and you can keep nearly 60 MB free on my build if you terminate running programs.
I have considered releasing an "l" series (as in "lite") that omits Enterprise, Entertainment, IPSECVPN, Themes, Transcriber, Skybox, Skymarket and Widgets... it would be ruthlessly pared down. But then again, I don't take donations and I'm not really interested in a whole lot of cooking of ROMs that I wouldn't personally use. I expect WM6.5 to be a bit slower than WM6.1 because of all the added glitz.
Bottom line: other than fixing bugs that can be reproduced by others (and aren't just due to the OEM drivers or OS, which are beyond my control), I'm not going to compete with Montecristo for "fastest ROM" or whatever. If the 910c vs. 912 and 914 OEM base thing turns out to be a big deal, maybe Monte will cook for 912/4 and I'll stick to the 910c.
Thanks for the feedback!

Not as yet - have downloaded it just now. Will try it out tonight and get back to you.
I have spent the last 3 weeks - since I purchased my HTC Touch HD - on getting Telstra to give us the right to use a stock ROM. It seems they may at last be starting to listen to their customers.
In the meantime I have been using my old and trusted SPB Mobile Shell; Weather; Wallet; GPRS Monitor; Keyboard; Time and Backup. Took a long time to set it all up again and get rid of the Telstra stuff.
Although some of it was useful and I do like the look of the TOUCHflo 3D - I just didn't want all the Telstra Overkill - seeing as I purchsed the HTC outright.
What a surprise to now see Telstra come to the party. LOL
Cheers
i've tried it can't say i notice anything really different....might just have the fixes built in...same old keyboard etc
I tried it and found the following differences
1) HTC Weather tab (only major cities so sort of sucks but the animations are cool)
2) a few different internet connections defined including 'telstra enterprise'
3) couldn't set up my over the air activesync to my corporate email. Kept on telling me the modem settings wouldn't let me connect. After a number of fustrating phone calls to HTC and Telstra I worked it out myself. When you go into the options for the email account after setting it up there used to be an advanced button where you could set which internet connection to use, this is no longer there. Instead where you define which options to sync (email, contacts, calendar and tasks) there is an options tab, under this is a connection tab which has 'dedicated' by default. Changing this to internet fixed the problem.
3) new Telstra email service seems to be on this rom, for $7 you get 1000 emails from telstra mail, hotmail etc. However attachments are only free if you use Telstra or bigpond mail.
It seems a little bit faster, although not that much.
Internet seems to be quicker as well.
I gained an extra bar of signal strength.

Can you upload this rom for sharing? Thanks!
can't download
Can you tell me why I can't download this rom?
When i type my device S/N HT92RKD01786,
system answer is "Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device."
When i open htc site for my country (Poland), there is no rom update in this year. Can I install this rom , if someone upload it?
Tried it - very disappointed
I tried it out last night and was very disappointed - yet once again.
The Weather Tab is now available but I still could not find the Customize Tabs location or application. Nothing else changed much on mine. I live in the "Next G" network area - so going from 1 bar to 2 bars did'nt exite me too much.
Telstra - shame on you for degrading such a perfect piece of equipment.
Ohh well - back to SPB - seems that one does work well and allows me to change whatever I like. Maybe not as good looking as the Touchflo app but at least I can customize and I don't have TELSTRA in my face the whole day.
Fuxik - I believe this upgrade is only available to the HTC 8285 "Telstra" branded model. Believe me, you probably don't want this one if you already have a working "Stock HTC ROM" installed.
Again guys - very disappointed in Telstra. Why aren't we allowed to have a stock ROM ?? Does Telstra think we are all "dummies" and can't find our way around a mobile?? Or are they afraid if we don't see them we may not use them (haha)...
ROM is in the base directory of the FTP site, couldnt seem to put it anywhere else
Battery life seems to be a bit less with this ROM
Can't change the home screen on touchflo, can assign a different picture but it doesn't pick it up
Seems to turn itself on every now and then for no particular reason
Drop downs in SPB Mobile and Phone seem to have stopped working
Opera browser paints itself about 1 cm to big sometimes and you can see the top of the bottom buttons but cant hit them.
Same here Nossac
I've also found a few issues with this new Telstra release.
Battery life is definately shorter now.
I was never able to change the picture on the "Telstra" home screen from day one. Last version had same issue.
Still cannot find the so-called "Customisation Button".
I ended up not istalling SPB Phone as it kept conflicting with the Telstra settings. But not having any issue with SPB Mobile Shell 3.0 (as yet)
I'm in the Next G zone and am now having an issue with the Internet Connection. My phone now seems to want to connect to HSDPA instead of 3G - It takes longer to download anything because of this. Telstra won't let us change the Connection Settings. They are pre-set.
What a joke.
Will be calling Telstra today to see what to do next.
Still NOT happy Jan!! LOL
Not being able to alter the background annoyued me so much I ended up putting Mobile Shell back on
I have SPB Mobile, Phone and Time all running nicely.
If only they would release better Mobile Shell widgets...
My phone has always gone to H when doing data then kicks back into 3G after is has finished. For some reason I thought that is what it was meant to do??
Even my mega battery is down to 40% at night now (new ROM + Mobile Shell) is a bit of a killer, it used to only get down to 60%

Having a couple of questions about the HD2 - also considering flashing!

Hi there.
I have owned the HD2 for about a month. I find it difficult to say for sure whether I like it or not - it diffently has a lot of both pros and cons. But since I am not looking to give a review of the device I just have a few pressing questions that I have not been able to find the answer to while doing alot of reading in these greats forums.
1. I have problems with both stability and lag. Could a possible ROM switch to say "energy (the newest version)" fix that?
2. Are the custom ROMS considered better than the stock ones - or is it mainly just because it is fun to be able to completely mess around with your phone?
3. If I choose to switch to energy's latest ROM is there some way for me to get my Danish T9 dictonary to work on the ROM - I have not been able to find the answer to that simple question while reading through those almost terrifyingly many pages contained in the thread for the energy ROM!!!! Found something about Chinese or Korean input... not helpful!
4. A side question: Is there a way to disable the function in HTC''s sms program that makes it able to input a different letter than the one pressed? Say you I have have pressed "e" but accidently released it on "r" making it type "r" instead of "e" - annoying the hell out of me.
Right now I am using my HD2 together with SPB Mobile Shell 3.5.4 - the change of interface alone has seemed to reduce lag - but of course the Mobile Shell is not as "connected" as HTC's Sense interface, and I miss my music player and twitter integration :/
Hope you are not going to get a stroke or brain bleed because I did not RTFM enough
Thank you for your time reading this
From my experience with cooked ROMs, it seems like some are just as stable if not more so than stock ROMs whereas others can have more problems... You'll just have to try a few and see which one you like.
Cooked ROMs are nearly always faster than stock and they usually have much more up to date versions of the various system components and programs.
The main reason I decided to flash a cooked ROM was to get the updated TMOUS camera drivers which fixes the overexposed effect that made the LED flash more or less useless. I'm using Dutty's V6 Hybrid at the moment and it uses a different bluetooth stack. I can't tell you why but it does make music sound better (when using a bluetooth headset obviously) and it's much faster than my old 1.44 stock ROM...
I hope those examples show why cooked ROMs can be so amazing. Just be careful not to flash a stock ROM with the latest SPL from your microSD card or you'll be stuck with it...
I prefer tweaking the default rom. This is not to say that the cooks don't do a good job i just prefer not to get too extreme with the custimization. I do tweak the registry and i have installed a different spl and updated the radio. It's also been overclocked and so far i'm very happy with it (at the end of week 2 of ownership). The tweaks and the overclock combined with the 3D gfx driver that you can get from here have solved the lag and speed issues with all programs except for the messaging application.
I've also installed several applications including SRS WoW HD, a WM 6.1 style task manager, WIFI remote access and phm regedit. I've also updated the facebook application and dropped a copy of office mobile 2010 on.
At the end of the day the choice is yours. My phone is as stable as a rock right now and never crashes although i must say it wasn't but i found, like most people, that the problems were caused by a particular program. In my case it was a slightly dodgey remote desktop client that it turns out i didn't need anyway. It's also feels as responsive as my very expensive desktop pc (specs below).
The issue you mention with text messaging could be solved by decreasing the sensitivity of the touch interface or (and this is what i do) rotate the phone to landscape mode and type like that. It makes the keyboard wider and a bit easier to use. You could also get a foldable bluetooth keyboard.
What route you take is entirely your choice so if you think a custom rom is the right route to take go for it. There are some many out there your not going to be short of choice so it may be worth exploring more than just energy's roms.
Thank you very much for your answers
Well, I predict that if choose to flash some custom ROM, that i will spending alot of time trying out the different ROMs of the different chefs, but then again, i do not feel completely satisfied with the way my device is running now.
I have actually recently flashed back with a stock ROM... Tried to install some different radios so that I would get better reception, but I was no different. Plus i didn't think flashing radios was as "dangerous" as flashing ROMs How can i check if my device has been "locked"?
I also think that I have narrowed down the problem with the lag (not the instability) to when the facebook integration of my contact is downloading new info (every 2 hours right?), lags horribly for about one minute throughout the whole menu, actually, every time it accesses the internet to either update tweeter, face or check for email, it lags!
I am hoping these things can be overcome by flashing a new ROM, if that is even possible for me now :S
If you have reinstalled a stock rom you will probably need to install an unlocked spl again. To do this you'll need to get a copy of hspl or hspl2 (look in the rom development board). flashing the radio is less danagerous to a certain extent but i advise you have look for customruu there is a version that is configured not to wipe the device after install. I would post a link but i'm out and about and all my resources are on my desktop.
The lag you experience with the facebook/twitter integration i haven't experienced as i don't use it but i do have an exchange server that is configured with direct push and i don't have any lag with that. It may be worth you looking into the 2 tweaks sticky threads and implementing some of them. I would also suggest that you have a look for the 3D gfx driver and netrippers LCS which will allow you to disable the processors autoscaling. You may find this illiminates the lag. It certainly did the trick for me.
Unless you use a ROM with the TMOUS camera drivers you might as well not have a flash for taking pictures in dark settings. I spent quite some time just playing around with my old stock ROM too but in the end I gave in because of this issue...
Flashing from the microSD is the safest way to flash anything just make sure that you're battery's fully charged (to be on the safe side) and it's not a stock ROM with an SPL included which would overwrite your HSPL.
Here is a question based on your last comment, Neo, and i'm only asking because i noticed an image was over powered by the flash at around a metre distance. is it possbile to install the tmous camera driver on a stock rom and if so where do i find it?
I found a thread with a link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5866852&postcount=13) but it fails to install on my stock 1.66 rom and looking at the thread many other too. Although that thread reveals - consistant with neo's comment - that the driver is included in many cooked roms based on the tmous 2.10 (and above) rom
Okay guys. Thanks for the tips. I guess I will have to install HSPL again and this time try to flash Energy's ROM. Don't know if it has the new camera drivers, or if it has those nice bluetooth drivers (I have noticed the voice quality is not very good on my bluetooth headset).
3D GFX and that CPU program, check!
Guess I will also try that "Slide to Unlock", saw it in a youtube demo and it had many more features than i originally thought... nice!!!
So if I understand this right, flashing a stock ROM with the stock SPL does not remove the ability to install HSPL again? But it is just annoying having to install HSPL all over ?

------ Got Bad Battery life in android? I can help!! ------
after being given the idea by JW, i have done extensive testing with various radios using current widget. I can confirm that the worst radio you can have for battery life in android, by far, is 2.15.xx and 2.14.xx
With radio 2.10.50.28_2 or 2.08.50.05 i am getting a constant 6/7 mA in standby, even with wifi still active and around 100mA less useage when phone on and being used!
you can download them here:
2.08.50.05 - is here
2.10.50.28_2 - is here
flash them in bootloader, boot to WM (you may need to reset your date and time - flashing radios sometims changes it, then boot to android and enjoy!
If you are looking for an older version than the above, please browse the root of our FTP available here http://cleanex.htcfanboys.com/

Dear Gavin, thank you.
You are the man
and as mynamesteve said, Christmas has come early
Thanx .... giving it a try ..... Greatly appreciated ......
Just booted up after flash. Amazing speed, everything seems working 101%, probably the best ROM ever made for the HD2. Will test further and report if any issues found.
Still running ancient Radio 2.08.50.08_2, should I update?... to wich one?... (yes, battery life sucks with this one but it always has and I doubt any radio will improve it much...) Does it need to be a Radio ending in xxxxx_2 or it doesnt matter? Any feedback on newer Radios or what's the best one?
Gavin... U know it Simply perfect!
Cheers guys! Keep the feedback coming, and let me know of any issues you may encounter!
G
For Ultra, the LeftSoftKey registry (ie HKLM/Software/HTC/manila/HomeLSKPath) didnt work anymore. This did not happen on previous Ultra. I was trying to map it to "\windows\taskmgr.exe"
Welcome back Gavin! We missed u!! Wish your GF for a quick recovery!!

[Q] What is ROM?

Hey everyone,
I've bought my HD2 about a year ago and using it happily, but as I understand Im not using its full potential, so as a clueless person I want to ask you what the f is a custom ROM
You see, as Im using my phone Ive loaded a lot of stuff in it, like Cookies Home Tab, BsB tweaks, Comic Reader, Garmin, SlovEd, Java aplications, tons of games...And I of course contacts, calender notes, alarms and so on... What happens to programs and other things after ROM update.
My main question is; what happens when I load a new ROM to my HD2? Are there any risks? How much time would it take to update it?
---
Hardware: CPU: QUALCOMM(R) 8250B 1024MHz - RAM: 576 - Flash: 1024MB
Software:
OS:5.2.21892
Manila: 2.5.2.20121412.2 (I also dont know what this is)
ROM: 2.13.531.1 (90963) WWE
Radio: 2.10.50.26 (This one also seems to be important somehow)
--------
PS: My phone was bought from US T-Mobile, I unlocked SIM lock to use it here...
you should be slaped for this question! it is an insult to everybody here!
We have an old saying: "Teach me a letter and I will be a slave for you"
And another: "It's not a shame not to know, not asking is"
rom is the os.
manila is the interface created by htc (you can use the same rom and not use manila - it will look old school wm.)
updating is easy.
it is completely restarting your phone - everything will need to be re-installed. people do it as it is a) custom, b) no bload, c) lots of good tweaks, d) faster.
check out the roms thread and just look around. you'll get a sense of the flavor of what people use. i used energy roms; they always rocked wm. stable, fast and easy to use.
now, if everything is fine and you are 100% happy i suggest not changing unless you have a strong desire. it is okay to just use what you have. i had custom roms as the original rom quit on me. never looked back.
cheers.

Custom ROM is basically the OS Windows Mobile 6.5 by other developers.
Now the architecture of the OS remains intact but developers like tweaking it a little to boost performance and replace stock applications with new ones that people need.
For instance in the default Tmobile Stock Windows Mobile
you can only have 3 quick links on the home screen
however I use Dutty's Latest ROM (use search on XDA) which provide me
4 quick links (tweak)
also his ROM has all the latest applications released by hTc which sometimes takes quite a long time for the stock OS to come with.
