Wacky button illumination - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got on Saturday my exchange MT4G and realized that the illumination of the 4 buttons doesn't turn on all the time. Are these buttons also controlled by automatic brightness? Means they don't illuminate when it is bright?

Yes, they will turn off if you're in a bright lit area.

Good to know. Funny that I wasn't aware of that on my first MT4G.

Hardware buttons not lighting up

I'm running DamageControl's 2.06 ROM. When I start up phone up from standby, the hardware buttons as well as the trackball underneath the screen do not light up.. Is there a fix for this?

are you in a brightly lit area?
They will only turn on in darker areas due to it being controlled by the light sensor.
Oh yeah alright, when I cover up the light sensor, it turns on.
Got it, thanks for the help though!

Auto brightness

Why does it randomly stop working? Or, right before the screen shuts off, insted of dimming, it brightens? I can be in total darkness and if i close an app, it goes to 100%.
I experience that as well. It's quite annoying.

I've found that it simply doesn't work
The auto brightness sucks. When it's in a completely dark room, its too bright. When it's in direct sunlight, it's not as bright as it COULD be. Annoying.
I wish we had the brightness notification slider like the vibrant but till that comes out I have been using the power control widget works fine for me.

Part of this may have to do with "Power Saving Mode" under Sounds & Display..
It says it analyzes the image on the screen and adjusts the backlight to save power.
I've noticed when I'm on a screen that's majority white pixels, the display will dim regardless of the light in the room.

I agree with that theory.

Keyboard Light

Hi all,
I was wondering if there was a way to force the keyboard keys to stay lit up until you close it. It seems to be cutting out mid type.
Thanks.
It turns off when you it's bright enough in the surrounding area. You can flash cyanogenmod and set all the brightness settings.
Thanks,
I guess I was hoping to be able to control this manually without having to flash a different rom.
At this time its not possible to control it manually from stock froyo. Maybe in gingerbread?

do you have it set to automatic brightness? I noticed my keyboard turning on and off while typing and the screen dimmed and brightened with it. Turned off the auto brightness and hasn't done it since.

Turning off the auto brightness hasn't made any difference to me on my DZ. The backlight for the keyboard and capacative buttons seems to turn off and on quite often for no apparent reason (badly calibrated light sensor ?).
has anyone tried covering up the light sensor with a sticker or something? lol idk

That would certainly work, you can put your finger over it and show how it's the light sensor doing it. Probably not the best long term solution though

notification light?

i saw a white light on the bottom corner on my xoom;s screen. is it for notifications?
Depends on how you hold it. The notification light is a white (supposed to be tri-color) line next to the Verizon logo.

right. i'm just confused as it rarely comes on. i think the only time it came on was when i was playing wordfeud with friends.
isn't it suppose to come on when i get IM or email or something?

My light pulses White every 2 seconds or so when I get an IM on Gmail Talk. Edit: Only when the screens off, btw.

Here are the steps I took to learn this information:
1) Read the labels on the film taped across the front of the Xoom's screen as it came from the box, where it's pointing to NOTIFICATION LED
2) Read the user manual
3) Use my common knowledge and history of using mobile, connected devices to understand that a blinking light means something new has happened or arrived on the device.
4) Post a question on the forum
I think this is my first post, but I gladly use it to point out how newbish you are to have to ask this question on the internet.

Thanks for being a jerk. You may also want to make sure that you have notifications turned on whatever apps you're using.
Top light to the left of the camera
There's another light, just to the left of the front-facing camera. Does anybody know what it does?
The light to the camera's right glows when the camera's on. But the light to the left doesn't seem to do anything yet. (And it's not listed in the manuals nor on the plastic pull-off screen protector.)
Judging from the iFixIt take-apart photos, I'm guessing it will light up when the Xoom is running 4G.
Anybody else know more?

WOW thanks for your reply!
1. the label was taken off by the verizon employee when it was activated so i don't know that there was a sign that pointed to it.
2. the user manual did not specify where the notification light for apps are only for the charging light.
3. i know it is used to notify if something arrived but like i said it DOESN'T light when i get IMs even when the screen is off.
4. it is posted on the forum!
thanks, but i don't need your sarcastic answers.

I'm fairly sure what you are referring to is a light sensor, for automatic brightness adjustments.
I actually had sorta the opposite problem in that I had the notification light going for seemingly no reason. Checked all apps and no notifications on bottom bar. Reboot solved but made me wonder what was up.

If you can't see the notification light it most likely has to do with your screen brightness. I thought mine was broken when it was so faint, so i cranked up the brightness and sent myself a test e-mail. When the screen was off the notification light pulsed incredibly bright, i turned it down repeated the test, and the notification light was really faint. Hopefully they can change that to where it's always bright no matter what the brightness of your screen is set at.

I assumed the notification light is only when the screen is off. Why do you need it when the screen is on? You can see all notifications in the lower right.
Also, lets not forget the notification light on the BOTTOM center of the tablet in landscape.
It only comes on if the device is OFF... its a battery charge light. Its 2 or 3 colors that change depending on the charge level.

What I'm saying is that the brightness of the notification light when your screen is off depends on the brightness your Xoom is set to. If you have your screen at 100 percent when its off the notification light will be very bright. However I had my screen quite dim and when it was off ans I received a notification, the light was almost nonexistent. You can test it for yourself. Its something that is hopefully fixed so that the notification light brightness is independent of the brightness your Xoom is set to.

Oh, I am sorry I misunderstood. I tested it at lowest brightness setting and the notification light is just as bright as full brightness for me.

The reboot actually made it work. It was driving me nuts. Lol
The batery on this thing is so good, I haven't turned it off till I got it yesterday.

Yeah, mine works now too, weird, I rebooted it so there must have been something wonky going on, but everything works now.

Lowest brightness level turns off screen

I noticed this when I was out Friday night at a dark bar as I was lowering my brightness so I wouldn't be blinded by the screen while texting. I lowered the brightness all the way down, and the backlight essentially turned off; at first, I thought the phone turned off sporadically so I turned it back on...but it turned out that the screen was on, but the backlight was off.
After some more investigating, it seems like this is a hardware issue as I did a complete hard reset and the problem persists. Strange, but my replacement should be shipping sometime soon. Has this happened to anyone else?

Accidentally gave you a thanks Lol. Mine doesn't do this, when I go to the wick settings, tap brightness, and slide it all the way down it just gets dim, doesn't turn off.

Yes, but I didn't realize this since I was in a really dark bar. When I got home, I played around with it and noticed that sliding the brightness all the way down to 0 resulted in the backlight turning off, and then the screen turning off within seconds. Very strange behavior.
Just something that I wanted people to be aware of so they can get their units swapped out.

Nope, stock everything. Locked bootloader, unrooted.
The screen actually doesn't turn off I found out. The backlight is off completely, but the screen stays on for the preset amount of time.
