My screen is too bright, what will make it dim below "10"?

Even on the dimmest settings, the Vibrant is too bright for me in bed, where the light disturbs my wife.
It seems that, with root, you can lower the brightness further - at least on other phones. Is there any way to do this with the Vibrant?

The "Dimmer" app will toggle it from your current brightness down to 10 but if you find something that will go lower let me know.

It has an automatic brightness control based on input from the sensor. You may need to disable this in the settings too, but I would think it would be automatically dimming itself already in a dark room.

Right, but that doesn't get dim enough in some situations and the minimum brightness you can select manually is 30. "Dimmer" will take it all the way to 10 but I would like to see something that would take it to 1 or 2.

I agree. It's too bright in low light situations.
If you find a solution please post it.

Try the Screen Filter App from the market. You can get UNBELIEVABLY low brightness. Which means much better battery.

+1 on screen filter. New version now dims taskbar too.

Auto brightness only brightens, never dims

I noticed that the brightness only brightens but never dims back in automatic brightness display setting. I can reproduce this easy with turning the lamp on my desk on and off. It only goes back to the lower brightness if turning the screen off and on again.

Noticed this too but seems to only occur when I use a widget to toggle between Auto and 100%.
If I leave the setting in Auto from within settings then it seems to work. Brightness widgets seem to break the auto functionality.

Hmm, I don't use a brightness widget. The light of the softbuttons go on if I cover the light sensor, but the screens stays in high brightness.

Must be an all around bug then. If you turn the Atrix off and back on then the auto brightness functionality is restored.

This must be an Android thing. My Atrix does the same thing, as did the Nexus One I had before. I've had several (high end) Nokia's that dimmed/brightened perfectly. After 5 seconds, they would brighten (or dim) accordingly. I was hoping Motorola was better at making phones than HTC (the KING of bad battery life). We ALL lose here. Our precious battery life is being drained by the poor execution of a simple function.

This is a stock android thing (problem). Custom ROMs can allow it to dim and change brightness smoothly rather than in discrete steps (Cyanogen).

That's what I thought. I found this free app called "esdimmer". It supposed to be for Galaxy phones, but it's somewhat working on my Atrix. Does this function work any better in Gingerbread?

Well it's good to hear that it's a stock android problem and not the actual phone. I did find a way to get around this problem but it's very limited. You can get the screen to dim by first putting the phone into standby and then press the standby button once again (which gets you into the lock screen). You'll notice that the screen then dims (if coming from a well lit area/room to a darker one).

Brightness reduced when some apps launched

With auto-brightness turned off an brightness turned up all the way, I am seeing the brightness go down when some apps are launched and turn back up when the app is closed. I noticed this today when launching GoChat and then also saw it when launching the stock jellybean web browser. I am not sure but I think this has only been happening since the last software update (T-Mobile USA).
I wonder if others are noticing this and if it is occurring on I9505 models or just T-Mobile models.

Is power saving mode on?

power saving mode = off
auto brightness = off
auto adjust screen tone = off
still the same problem.
I see the thread talking about 33% briteness reduced during web browsing, but this shouldn't be if all brightness reducing settings are off.
And it certainly should be with other apps. My texting app has a dark theme where background = black and text = blue. When this 'feature' reduces my screen brightness when I launch that messaging app with the dark them, it becomes difficult to read.
So they are trying to save us from ourselves... and save their battery bragging rights... but PLEASE SAMSUNG, give us options to turn all this crap off!!
So... maybe I'll have to root and reROM. Just don't want a ROM with more issues than I already have with stock ROM. I hear other ROMs aren't so good with our camera.

No sir, Not always! Sitting here in a bright office with white walls, filled with sunlight and fluorescent light, with auto-brightness off and brightness turned up all the way, turning ON auto brightness reduces the screen brightness by quite a noticeable bit.
I've read this stated a few places that auto-brightness can actually push the brightness up higher than is possible with manual brightness, but under what conditions? It would make sense that auto would select the brightest possibility under direct sunlight conditions, but I just tested it outside under direct 11am sunlight, toggling back and forth between auto and manual (turned all the way up) -- no difference! Auto brightness did not make my screen brighter than is possible with manual brightness turned up all the way.
All.... as posted in another thread, this only appears to be a problem when launching the browser. My problem with GoSms chat was remedied when I toggled back to 'normal mode' (from it being accidentally set to 'night mode' at some point -- oops! why would an app have its own brightness setting? this should only be a global variable).

Screen Too Bright in Dim Ambient Lighting

The screen is too bright for me at home during the night even when brightness is set manually at zero. The odd thing is the phone has a dim mode when inactive that is very dim. Any way to manually access the phones inactive dim back light?

I use this app, 'Screen Filter' during the dark.

If you only want to dim brightness download and try something like Yetanother auto brightness (YAAB) from the store.
It goes lower than stock and had a night mode.

Do you experience brightness issue?

I've noticed weird brightness issue at Auto Brightness turned off and when I set it at full. It is actually going even brighter when is brighter outside and it's getting darker again when going into darker environment and it is making me crazy because firstly I don't want my battery to drain more when using brightness sensor and actually don't like the feeling of brightness going up and down that's why I TURNED OFF autobrightness. Could you reproduce the same behavior?

Yes i have this when dark mode is turned on, Even with Auto brightness off it will still change the brightness when i am outside in the bright sun and it also changes the way the text appears adding sort of black lines on the edges of the letters (to give it more contrast ?). It's a feature not an issue i think it also doesn't happen indoors even when lights change. For some reason it only happens when it's very bright outside.

Yeah, but every feature should have "turn off" button, but Xiaomi couldn't help it with forcing something on us as always...

Under Settings/Display/Contrast & colors try using either Increased contrast or Standard. NOT Automatic contrast.
