Am I the only who took a huge step back in terms of the quality of word completion prediction when I upgraded from 1.6 to 2.1? I had used the default keyboard on 1.6 and I'm talking about the default keyboard on 2.1 now. On 1.6, text prediction was brilliant. On 2.1, it's like a joke.
Here are some of the things that used to happen on 1.6:
1) When I hit, say, the letter "T" as the beginning of a new word, the list of suggestions I got looked something like this:
to
today
tomorrow
through
time
So, with the most common words, I could simply type a single letter and pick the word from the suggestion list, in most cases.
2) Recently used words were aggresively brought to the beginning of the suggestion list. For example, if I'm entering a couple of repetitions of a phrase like "parametric equalization" into a list, after typing the first instance in its entirety, on the second instance, when I hit the "P" key, the word "parametric" would be the first item on the suggestion list. After picking that suggestion, as soon as I typed an "E" for the beginning of the second word, "equalization" would be the first item in the suggestion list.
3)There were two rows of suggested words available. (At least, it was an option I could pick.)
After upgrading to 2.1, none of that is true! Here's what now happens with the default keyboard on 2.1:
1) When I hit the letter "T", here is the entire list of suggestions I see:

Is this a joke? Where are my full word suggestions? Where are the suggestions of the "T-words" that I've just typed in the preceding sentence? These are not "word completion suggestions"! There's no "completion" to speak of here. These are T9 input options. Is someone asleep at the wheel?
2) I no longer see a way of enabling two rows of suggestions to be displayed. Did I do something wrong in order to cause it to be taken away? Was I bad boy?
3) When I set "Spelling correction" to "off", I lose completion suggestions altogether. What? Since when do "spelling correction" and "word completion" mean the same thing?
So, am I missing something? I didn't see many complaints voiced on this forum about these issues. Am I the only one bothered by these?
I know that a common suggestion such complaints is to switch to using another keyboard such as the HTC_IME. I've tried it. That one behaves almost identically to the default 2.1 keyboard, in terms of the issues I explained above. The sole improvement it provides is that it's slightly more inclined to include longer words in the suggestion list than the default, but only after you type the third letter or so. Not the same thing as what I had in 1.6. Not good enough.
And, by the way, in my case, there doesn't seem to be a way of eliminating spelling correction on the HTC_IME keyboard. I turned off all spelling correction options that I could find. When I type "for", I want only words that start with for- to be shown on my suggestion list. Instead, here are the suggestions that I get for "for" with all spelling correction options turned off:

god
cor
fir
foe
In what universe are those "not" spelling corrections?
Oh and, by the way, thanks for the brilliant idea of wasting the space for one suggestion (the most likely one, actually) by presenting what I have typed myself in the first place. It's not like I could have just hit Space and continued if that were in fact what I meant to type. Which Nobel laureate came up with that one?
Does anyone know of a third-party keyboard that behaves in the way I explained in the "used to" list above? I looked through a few of them, but the details of the behavior to this extent is usually something not covered in the feature lists shown for these or covered in reviews.

Then again, sometimes I need to type in Japanese, so using the Japanese IME works for me.

Hmmm. If you're talking about the built-in Japanese one, I'd be willing to give that a try if it allows typing in English as well.

I'm pretty sure it's a plain and simple bug. I can't understand how it slipped through. It's pretty embarrassing, really. In any case, that's not even the biggest one of my complaints. (That would be the lack of adaptive full-word suggestions.)

I've just tried the built-in Japanese keyboard. I can't thank you enough for your suggestion! Like you said, its behavior is exactly the same as the 1.6 default English keyboard. It's actually an improvement over even that one, in one or two respects.
The only drawback I'll have to live with is the need to press the "Symbol" key (the keyboard mode switcher) twice to return from symbols back to alphabetical keys. (There's a third keyboard layout that I need to cycle through, which is obviously specific to Japanese text entry.) Also, the layout of the "numbers and symbols" keyboard is different, but nothing seems to be missing and it's actually arguably better than the original (the number keys are larger). I'm more than willing to live with this when all of my complaints about the 2.1 keyboard is eliminated!
And here are a few additional benefits I got from the Japanese keyboard:
The left and right arrow keys are back, for moving the cursor.
Four lines of suggestions are displayed when I hit even the first letter of a word. (Woo-hoo!) Not only that, but I can also scroll through more suggestions in that four-line space if I swipe up. (This might have been there in 1.6 but, if so, I hadn't gotten into the habit of using it.) This kind of vertical scrolling through suggestions is much more efficient than the horizontal scrolling in the new default keyboard (as well as in Swiftkey) in my opinion. Instead swiping an entire screen width's worth to see only three more words or so, you can swipe up only two line heights' worth and see two new lines of suggestions (about six to eight words, usually).
There's even a key with a smiley as its label which brings up a list of most frequenly used symbol characters in the same form as the suggested word list, saving me two taps when I need to type only a single symbol. Sweet!
I can comfortably recommend this to anyone else who has the same complaints as me about the default 2.1 English keyboard. I consider my problem solved.
I'm all for Swype. I've used it and never wanted to switch back.

Awesome! Glad to have helped! The only complaint I have about the Japanese keyboard is that four lines of suggestions means it gets in the way of seeing the text box I'm typing in occasionally. It's a good keyboard, I've always found it more accurate than the standard English keyboard as well.
Anyone managed to track down the 1.6 apk of the original keyboard and tried installing that!?
I can't stand the 2.1 keyboard. I've tried loading the Japanese keyboard but I can't find it. How do you get it to load instead of the English keyboard?

Go to any text field that you can edit, tap and hold, pick "Japanese keyboard" from the pop-up list. (This doesn't work in some specialized fields like the browser's address field, but the search field of the Market app is one place where it does work.)

if you havent tried the HTC_ime mod i suggest you give it a chance. i have been using that since before my X10 and i love it. i have far less prediction problems. also if its any advantage: i find it way faster to type with the compact qwerty keyboard when i type in portrait.

It's a lovely, good-looking piece of software, but ultimately just doesn't work for me.
I've tried keyboards on touch-screen devices but ultimately none really work for me - I think my fingers and thumbs are just too big! Also, if you are typing fast you don't really have time to check each letter before releasing your fingers from the keyboard, so the visual feedback is rendered pointless. Typing capital letters is a faff too.
The best I've found has been phonepad. Perhaps a combination of the two might be worthwhile, e.g. a phonepad with visual feedback?
Best SIP outside of phonepad!
Contact Manager is also a must for a touch user!
any1 tried to disable the dictionary? seems like its very troublesome for me as i cant type shortform.

Only became very usable for me with "Enable Suggention" NOT selected.

The whole point of this keyboard is that you don't have to make sure you touched the right key...you just type the word, and if you typed "rgw", it'll change it to "the" because it looks at blocks of letters, almost like t9...you type and in the end the right word should be there...
it's head and shoulders above the kb that comes with any wm phones...

Whilst I agree that this is a good idea, it just doesn't work for me, I'm afraid. I think that I, and perhaps others, tend to type at least one or two non-dictionary words per text/message. I also use capital letters and punctuation a lot and, as I mentioned, I have very big hands!
I'm not saying it's no good, in fact as I mentioned I think that it's a brilliant program, I recommend everybody tries it out and reaches their own conclusions too.
It would be good if there were a way to auto-select the input (SIP) method on a per-program basis, e.g. so that PocketCMKeyboard came up automatically for text messages, but then it was the standard keyboard for other text entry. Perhaps this can already be done, I don't know.

totally off subject but it's "Touch Settings", the program to customise all the programs on the cube/mediahub and weather settings etc. I should change my sig though as it keeps popping up OT. !
I really like this keyboard, almost better than HTK. It would be nice if the period (.) were on the alpha keyboard an not the number keyboard.

It kind of is, just tap & hold the symbol key (lower LHS) and you get the . slide a little to the right & get the other most common punctuation marks.
You may want to try this skin...
I added the period and comma on the main text screen. This works very well for my Touch.

hey I recently bought an HTC touch and came across this excellent software*kudos to the one who programed it* I would like to ask for help in using this. I downloaded it through my touch directly then nstalled it on the phone memory and went to settings and input then selected PCM Keyboard and then ok but nothing happens I'm still stuck with the same old little keyboard help please thanks

I recommend Fingerkeyboard. It is free, highly customizable and does a great job. See my signature for the link. You can create your own layout if you want. I think other users have already made a layout with 5 rows, but if not, you can make your own. It is pretty easy. You can also see my signature for a basic tutorial on editing layouts. You decide what keys you wnat, where you want them, and what characters you want each key to type. If you have questions, you can post them in the Fingerkeyboard 2.1 thread here.

I ready that fingerkeyboard had problems with the HD2, can you confirm that it works well, and what version are u using?
Today i tried TouchPal. it is the BEST keyboard for the HD2 (at least for me).
It is so east to type accurately now.
i agree with Touch Pal i can write extremly fast plus a lower sensitive cab installation is just perfect - at least for me.

one of the reasons that FK had problems with the HD2 is the speed of the capacitive screen. Some people correct that with the lesss sensitive Cab on this site. With FK go to options and delay the two hold times. I've set the left one to 400 instead of 250 and the right one to 250. Now FB works well on the HD2.
Chriss: can you confirm this and also tell us what the left and right one are for???
I installed TouchPal and thought it was pretty naff compared to the standard HTC keyboard, to be honest. I can type faster and mode accurately using the standard keyboard. In fact, this post was written using it!

Sorry guys. I got mixed up. No, I have not tested it on the Leo (I'm still looking into getting one ). I have only read the same reports that you have all mentioned here.

in the options tab there are two response time possibilities, eg left and right one.
I've tried a few of the others now, but still easily prefer the HTC supplied keyboard. I just wish it had the same gesture support as the WM default keyboard.
just another suggestion for a good keyboard for HD2: Cliquick. This also rotates the screen to landscape when pressing the .,123 key in whichever program you're in. You can find it here: http://cliquick.com/
edit: you can also set it to be your default SIP in the option settings.

Now that has become Cliquick. This even switches Word Mobile to landscape when you press the ",.123" key without using a third party sensor app like Gyrator or ChangeScreen. It comes with a 60 day trial and, if you do not want to buy it therafter, you can still use it for a max of 100 chars a day.
Let me throw ShapeWriter into the mix also.
Takes some getting used to but unce you've got it, it's much faster than a regular keypad (imo)

It's a pitty that this is only in English si I canot use it. BTW, it has great resemblance with Dasur's SlideIT. That one is blazing fast and easy to use (and supports several languages), but its main flaw is that it does not support landcsape. In this orientation it messes up the screen and a soft reset is needed. Otherwise this would be my nr 1 keyboard. Now that is Cliquick.

Sounds like the exact problem I have on my Advantage (the rotation issue). I've been the only one to report it, so I'm forwarding your note here as well.
I'll have to try Cliquick. Is this the one where you have to hit the same key several times to get different letters (like hit ab to get "a" and hit it again to get "b" ? Guess I'll find out.
Glad to hear the SlideIT works well except for the rotation issue, so if they can fix it, I'll be very happy.
I have noticed the latest version of Fingerkeyboard refusing to open when my HD2 (Leo) has come out of standby - can't recall what was running just prior so haven't raised it with the creator yet. I couldn't open another keyboard so had to take the battery out on the two occassions it happened.
A keyboard I have been using of late, as it worked well on my Touch HD is Zoomboard
I have tried both slideit and shapewriter and on the HD2 I much prefer slide it, its mainly due to how it handles the irratic behaviour of the capacitive screen, I mean HTC need to fix up its response, in shapewriter the line drawn with your finger tends to be scribbled everywhere missing letters, to much lesser extent on slidit, the keys are much easier to hit in slideit imo. the finger sliding keyboards are the way to go either way, I can type so much faster with slidit and takes only little parctice to get a real knack of it ... slideIT is fantastic
I really liked the way the autocorrect worked on the Evo 4G keyboard. Is there a way to turn that on for the Vibrant?
It would also be nice to have the key pressed pop up above the key when I push it (to verify i hit the right one without moving my eye) instead of just flashing blue under my finger where I can't see it.

Regarding swype.... not to hijack a thread... I no longer see how you add a word for swype to learn like it did previously? Used to, you would just long press and add the word to your dictionary. Anyone know how to do this?
Whenever you type a word in manually and hit space to go to a new word, it learns it. You can access the tutorial in "Swype Tips" in your app menu. It goes over this and other uses. You'll add the "word" "bob4" to the menu in the tutorial.

The default keyboard is swype and to get the autocorrect working similar to Evo, you need to go to settings, then Locale and text, then Set default keyboard and change it to android. If you change to samsung keyboard, you have to enable the auto predict text thing.
I've been trying out swype now though, and I'm liking it.
^^ yeah, I did that.... I guess I'm just used to longpressing and adding words to my dictionary. I have tried to type in a-p-p-s, but I can never get swype to do "apps" for me.

I've searched through the G2 forums and this one but couldn't find the fix I was hoping for.
On my G1, whenever I typed two spaces after a word it automatically put in a period. I liked that. My DZ also does that. Good stuff.
However, when I forgot to capitalize the letter 'i' in a sentence it would magically change it to a capital on my G1, the DZ doesn't do that and needs two keystrokes.
Can I change a setting somewhere? All I have is Prediction in my menu, and I don't like to use that as it created more work for me than it was worth.
Perhaps using the HTC IME from the G1 ROM?
I sure did like that keyboard layout on the G1 (and it's prediction), too bad we lost the top keyboard row of dedicated numbers; it now takes me twice as long to bang out my epithets.

I have turned on the predictive txt, then added I'm to the dictionary. Then when you type im, even though the green highlighted word still shows "im", it will insert it as I'm.
Hope it works for you and isn't a fluke for me, I'll be well annoyed if I have to keep adding it. Fingers crossed.

You were on to something there, and it made me dig...
I prefer to not have the predictive text turned on as I'm worried that it slows down my phone...
I found that in Settings, Language & Keyboard, Touch Input, International Keyboard the Français(Canadian) keyboard was also checked.
Unchecking Français(Canadian) reverted my keyboard to the input I came to know and love on my G1.
The standalone letter 'i' now capitalizes in mid-sentence, and 'im' now converts to 'I'm' after the space key, exactly the way I wanted it.
I guess Bell (Canada) sells these units all across the country and has one default setting to satisfy both official languages.

I would love to know if there's a way to make the text that appears on the upper half of the screen as I write appear bigger? My phone is rooted and I'm using the SE default keyboard.
I would also like to know if there's any application that has spelling correction and suggestion similar to the one installed by default on all blackberry devices? When you type a wrong word it JUST has it underlined and in case you need suggestions you click on that word and it gives you all the suggestions available.

This is not exactly what you are looking for, but I use SwiftKey, free in the Market. It has larger font and it has spell correction. Best of all, it has next word prediction. It learns how you write to suggest your next words. Many times I don't even have to type the next word, and most times I only have to type the first or second letter. I can type emails and post to this forum faster than my pc keyboard. Only thing that takes a bit of getting used to is space bar always takes the suggested word.
