I have been using a LG Optimus 7 phone from Telus for the past week, and since day one I felt that the back and the search button were a bit loose. There is basically a extra noise other than the clicking, kind of like a piece of plastic chipping, that comes out if I do not press the key right on the chrome-embedded symbol. The same is true of the search button, but to a lesser extent. Basically, the button presses were not "consistent".
I thought this was normal, until I visited the Telus store I bought it from. I tried the demo unit, and it felt normal, no extra clicky feeling. I asked the rep, and he brought a live unit from the back, and the same story, it was normal, and not like mine. So I am taking my handset back and replacing it with a new one tomorrow.
Anyone else experienced the same? If so, I recommend you do not compromise, and take it for replacement or "repair", as it can get annoying, given the sheer number of times the back button is used.
EDIT: I have replaced the unit, and the new one feels a lot better than the last one. I finally understand what some review sites were talking about, when they spoke of the very neat clicking of the tactile buttons.
However, I hate Telus, and their ****ty customer service. I was assured that the unit given to me was a new one. I was too concerened with checking the functionality of the keys, that I did not bother to look at the software. Basically, the handset given to me was a demo unit that was brought from the back to be shown to potential customers, or so I presume, since there was a live account already signed up on the phone, and obviously, I did not get the welcome screen upon first boot. Another anomaly I should have noticed in the store was the fact that the battery was already in the phone, and there was a lot of greasy fingerprints both on the screen, and on the back cover (inside and out). Now I am pissed, and taking the unit back for some "discussion" with the sales rep and the store manager. This was absolutely unacceptable. I bought the phone out of contract as well, so I will not be making compromises simply becuase of the amount that I paid for this phone.
PS: There were two tiny scratches on the back of the phone as well, as if the metal came was dragged on a table or something. Seriously, WTF TELUS!
EDIT 2: So, I exchanged this second handset as well. I really want to love this handset, but Telus and LG are making it extremely difficult. The store rep, obviously frustrated with my second product exchange, made it clear that "this is where we draw the line" on the exchanges. He brought FIVE brand new devices that had just arrived. I tried every single one, and EVERY SINGLE ONE made a different noise when clicking the buttons, some were loose and wobbly, others extremely quiet, but hard to press. Talk about consistency! I finally chose the most solid one that I found to be working well. Yet, after one day's use, the START BUTTON now is quite loose and wobbly. I think I will go back, or just hit up LG on possible solutions.
I wish there were tear-downs of this phone out there, so I could have possibly fixed it myself. I just don't want to be adventurous with the dis-assembly process.
Also, an issue that ALL the phones had was that the LED backlight has a problem at the bottom of the screen. To see this for yourself, put backlight brightness on low, and bring up white or grey screens. It is too obvious to miss...
I really wish this had gotten more attention, as it is a serious problem, so a slight BUMP!
Edit: I will never buy a product with physical front buttons again. Seriously, WTF?!!
And the vibration is also really weak. I was using a Samsung feature phone before, and my whole body would shake on the vibration, but now, I barely ever notice it, even if it is in my front jeans pockets.
Otherwise, I really like Windows Phone 7, wish the updates would flow sooner and faster and periodically to add features though.
And I like the phone. It is solidly built, and has a great feel to it when you hold it. The LCD is also very sharp and has nice contrast. If it wasn't for the buttons, and perhaps it had buttons similar to HTC Desire or something similar, then I would have loved this phone.
I have the same things on my LG. More on the back button than search. It is quite annoying and about the only thing that feels "cheap" on the phone. Seems lika really stupid design when everything else is so solid.
Haven't decided what to do yet. Hopefully the button will wear down a bit so it won't make the clicky noise when it connects to the bottom frame.
Now the bluetooth headset pairing not working is pissing me off waaaay more tho.

I got mine last week - I am little confused about this as well. It does give it cheap feeling. I got a question besides the buttons, regarding vibration - How do i set it to high - Cause I think I have it ON high but I cant even feel it. Seems really weak. IF I am doing something wrong in settings please let me know. Or let me know the settings you have used I will give that a try. I like windows OS but not extremely happy with LG product.
Now the plastic cover on the windows/start button is starting to wear off in one corner. Wont last long for sure.

same boat as you guys I got mine the very next day, BAM same thing button stopped working and your right telus was not helpful at all the call center agent's advice was "well maybe you dropped it." I went to the store and swapped it out this one works well we'll see for how long.

Just picked up a Snap. (Euro model)
The top row keys (menu keys, home, back, etc..) make a funny sound when I click them. They feel very "wrong". It sounds like it makes a click before I actually push it all the way in. So there is a sorta plastic-y double-click sound.
I rushed back to the store and the guy opened another box to compare and that was making the same noise too. He suggested it's new and will break in with time. (The display model was good but it has been "broken in" by a lot of customers.)
(QWERTY part of keyboard is fine.)
I'm inclined to think BOTH phones had a problem and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I had a similar experience with a laptop's touchpad button once and it got worse over time. So this is why I'm pessimistic.
Has anyone else had this problem/issue?

Well it's good to know.... but also sad news because apparently HTC screwed up something.
After using mine for 24 hours the problem was worsening so I just returned it to the store.
I don't know how old is yours (and if it's getting better or worse), maybe you can also return it?
I didn't get another one because frankly I was not awed by the Snap.
Coming from an Excalibur (S620) and based on specs I was expecting to be blown away by the performance of Snap.
But with 3VOLUTION's latest 6.5 ROM on my trusty (and beaten) Excalibur I could not see any improvement. (minus, of course, 3G and GPS)
Maybe I will buy another Snap in the future but going to wait until this hardware issue gets acknowledged/fixed.
PS. It is important to point out, the phone they had on display -abused by a lot of people- was PERFECT. Strange.

Just an update.
I picked up a second Snap a couple of weeks ago. Tried the keys in the store and they were not perfect but almost.
Lately I'm getting pissed off with them again. They are just as bad as the first one was. And I know this is a minor problem - probably not even a problem for most people - but I get so frustrated by it. This damn thing feels so cheap. Cheap crap plastic. My Excalibur is 3 years old but still rocking stronger.

Same with me. I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G and was wondering why this was happening. It's happening on my left softkey button and home button. I'm gonna take it back to T-Mobile on Tuesday.
Yeah I'm very pissed about this. This new phone (second one, after returning first) is just sitting in my drawer and I'm back on my Excalibur. Squeaky cheap plastic is my pet peeve.
Unfortunately I'm through the 14 days return so I'm stuck with it.
I have one of the first HTC Dash 3G's, got it from Customer service before they were even available for sale online or stores, I have no problems with the buttons what-so-ever, no clicking, just smooth presses. I wonder if there was a shoddy batch that went through to some areas.
Try some rubbing alcohol
On my Ozone, I've noticed a bit of trouble with a few of the keys on the top row feeling spongy. I used a alcohol wipe to kind of loosen up the keys which worked great. I also had noticed the battery cover recently started creaking, so I tore a business card in half and placed it over the battery, which tightened that right up.

Now i know why there are less stocks of snap in asia! i have the same soft key problem, even after one to one exchange! am really disappointed with htc on this, not sure how many others have this problem and if there is anything we can do to fix this? maybe even take it apart??? arghhh...

ookba's custom ROM made it a lot nicer but I just could not get used to the device. Yes the keyboard looks great but the overall design is odd (screen too small compared to the whole unit), it just did not feel balanced.
I have a bad feeling about the fate of the "standard" WinMo (non-touch) edition. The new professional devices are getting nicer. They need to get a new finger friendly OS and a proper capacitive touch screen - once they do that, non-touch will go extinct.
I guess it took me until now to see how Microsoft ignored mobile development for so long. What was killer technology in 2006 is just a mess by now.
I still love my Excalibur, I dare to say it was the best phone I ever had.
Here is how I imagine the perfect phone: Blackberry makes the hardware. Ookba joins Microsoft and they release WinMo 8, or so. XDA community builds GUI.
I really wonder how many people are facing this issue... sigh.
So far, it seems its happening all over the world. I have tested and changed 3units. The current one is a bit better ... at least the call button does not creaks as much. But I miss the e71 in terms of built quality. I was hoping there is some hack we can perform to fix this.

I bought my HTC Snap from Singapore. Experienced the same "weird" feeling, but only on the Call (Green) and End (Red) buttons.
Seems to be getting a tiny bit better after using it for a week (or maybe i've become accustomed haha)
Agree with you on the screen proportion thingy. I still love my old E61. Keyboard + Screen was spacious and lovely. Fast forward a few years and this is the best HTC could come up with?

So I just received/activated/started using my new HTC Hero this week, and I really love the phone. Just today I noticed a strange new phenomenon that I hadn't seen or felt up until today. Wondering if anyone else has the issue, because I'm considering returning my phone to get a replacement - I've had it less than 5 days.
My front silver faceplate, where all the buttons are, seems to be a bit loose on the left side (by the Menu/Home/Send) key. When I press down on it ever so slightly, it makes a very quiet clicky noise - similar to a regular button press but much softer. The right side of the silver area also presses down, since it is just plastic, but makes no noise - just the left side.
This makes clicking the Menu and Home keys much less pleasureable considering it almost feels/sounds like I'm getting two "clicks." This is the type of hardware behavior I'd expect after having the phone for 6 months - not 5 days! To make matters even weirder, the problem seems to come and go, and I haven't figured out a definitive pattern to that yet. Should I return it for a new phone?
Anyone else noticing this (or any other type of physical defect) on your Sprint Hero?
I think you are just over reacting... Mine phone also does this and I have had it a month before release without any problem. I think it is just how the button is designed flush with the rest of the other buttons all in one plate.
I believe it's supposed to be that way as well. You're more to welcome to go to the retail stores and check out other Heros there to confirm.

I have 3 hero's in my family. One of them was creaky and drove me nutz, swapped it out at BB. New one works awesome..... I could not live with the creaky buttons. felt like my refurbed touch pro.... ewwww
Swap it out. It may be true that many DO do that but they SHOULDN'T and it represents a defect. Don't be told otherwise. My didn't/doesn't do that, my gf's did and we swapped it out for a working one. Have them open the boxes to find one you like. Sprint phone boxes are not sealed or taped shut, they just open so try till you find one (will probably be the first one you try out.)
I guess what bothers me the most is that it didn't do it when I first got it, I feel like my pressing the menu key too many times is what did it! It seems like a pretty bad design flaw... hoping they don't give me a hard time when I try to return it on Wednesday.

The Hero comes with a warranty. If it's truly a design flaw, then HTC will repair/replace the phone for the length of the warranty.
Like other people here say, all our phones do that, it's not that big a deal. I'm more concerned with the trackball. I mean, there's no way to remove it (that I've seen) to clean the mechanisms underneath. And if any of you remember when your mouse used to have a ball and not a laser pointer, those little wheels get really dirty and gunked up really fast. That's just sitting on your desk, I can only imagine how messed up the track ball will get going in and out of my pocket and being touched by filthy dirty oily thumbs all the time.
I know how bad a trackball can get I just got the Hero after having a BB Pearl 8130 for 1 1/2 years, I don't use the Hero's trackball anywhere near as much but I can see it has already picked up dirt from my fingers I just hope it doesn't turn into a problem like the trackballs on the BB Tour
that is normal, every SPrint hero i have seen does that, but like they said above, you can go to the retail store, (not a privetly owned one, they will make you go to the retail store) and see if it is a 'defect'

I don't have this but my green phone button seems lower than the red one, making it a bit harder to press (especially cuase I have no nails due to biting them like crazy)

The earpiece speaker is really buzzy at louder volumes.
The "magnifying glass" button on the face doesn't seem to do anything. I'm having a really hard time getting any of the buttons to register, like the display unit I dismissed as defective (weird fingers?) but Search seems especially bad.
EDIT the Search button on the hardware keyboard works fine, so now I know it isn't a context thing, really makes me think it is bad now...

Return the device! I switched to Sprint last week and picked up my Epic 4g when Amazon had them on sale for $99. The first unit I received had the exact problems you mentioned; buzzy audio in the ear piece, poor response (if any at all) for touch buttons along the bottom (though in my case the 'Back' button was the main culprit).
I told an Amazon CSR about this, and they even sent me the replacement before I sent the defective one in so I wouldn't be without a phone for even a day. New unit works perfectly so far; it's apparently just the luck of the draw.

You've relieved all my worry. Calling now. No customization/applications/tweaks/etc for the next couple days...
and I already put on a screen protector that cost me $5. SUCKS.
Excellent battery life on this one... trying to kill it so I can do a full cycle, but it's going on 20hrs now (moderate usage + overnight) (so I'm actually TRYING to run it out now...). I assume this is the battery, which I'll swap over to the new one. But there isn't a big variation in power USAGE device-to-device, is there?
WOW! New one is so much better. I was hitting the "working" buttons 1-3 times to make them work, thought I was just bad at it... the new one is WAY better.
Though, I have noticed that Home and Search give a stronger vibration than the other two buttons. There is no way this would be a hardware issue, so I'm not worried, I just wonder if this is intentional or if I am losing my mind.
I know there are plenty of threads about G2 hinge issues, but I'd like to know about your Desire-Z keyboard hinges now that it has shipped.
I've just received my second Desire-Z this morning and it's probably worse than the first one. If pick up the phone, absolutely horizontal, from a table just by holding the upper section, the keyboard just falls half-open. Surely it shouldn't be like this? Mine does exactly the same. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but I'm not very happy with it.
My other concern is that the screen wobbles back and forth when I have the phone closed if I tap on the left and right edges.
I think this is probably a design flaw rather than a specific device problem. You'll probably find they're all the same

Cant quite tell what the angle is in the video.
If I pick up mine by just the top piece then it droops, but doesn't slide out.
If I hold it upside-down by the base it droops, but can't slide.
Whenever I pick up the phone though I hold it by the base, so in normal use it's perfectly fine.
I'm basically assuming that the spring should be just strong enough for the phone to hold itself together (i.e. without the keyboard dropping away at all) when it is gently lifted up from a flat surface. That's the benchmark I would want to see anyway, and neither of mine will do that.
I might take this up with HTC and see what their view on it is - I just hope they don't do an Apple and patronisingly say "you're holding it the wrong way".

I've just sent off an email to superEtrader asking for a refund as I'm not happy.
I hope they take it back without any hassle since their website says I can't return it if its been opened. Someone on here kindly pointed out the Distance Selling Regulations say I can open it and play with it (I have the PDF stored on my PC!), but I don't want to have that sort of hassle.
my phone has the same problem as the video.
Also, the screen slides down when im lying down, holding the phone by the keyboard.
My phone isnt quite a loose as in the video, but it does droop if I pick it up by the top section rather than the base & also if I am lying down and hold by keyboard it will start to shut... I kinda expected to have a loose hinge based on reviews that I had seen for G2 & at this point its only a very minor niggle, so I wont do any return until I find out there are Desire Zs out there that actually have a firm hinge.
On another note, I noticed yesterday that the black backing of the keyboard is a bit bubbly.. Im hoping that the backing wont start coming away down the road... but I guess only time will tell.
I found it hard to do what was shown on video, I never grabbed phone like this before. It never opened on its own even slightly. Also owned TP2 and never held it by the screen. I dont think people would actually ever hold it like that.
No offense to anyone, I just dont see any issues with my hinge. I know it opens when I hold it like on video or upside down, but If I havent read some posts, I would never try it.

The design is for the way we hold and use our phones.. I feel for you bro, but noone holds their phone at the angle your showing this at..

Honestly, at first it bothered, but really, it really starts to make sense for me now how it acts. If our hinge would be stronger, it'd be more difficult to open it and might have us actually break it.
Also, when I hold it while typing, I instinctively put my index fingers along the side of the keyboard/screen (once it is opened) and type with my thumbs. That way, it's impossible for the screen to fold back in closed position.
When I pick up my phone, I really don't pick it up by only one of the parts (screen/base). It's actually quite heavy at 180g and if I don't want to drop it, I rather pick up nicely and firmly.
So, really, after 4 days with my phone, the thing that bothers me more now isn't the screen, but the weight difference between my old Samsung Galaxy S (with gel back) and the Z.
Actually, funny anecdote, while playing Angry Birds, I actually opened the keyboard so I had a better grip on the phone.

I think I'll just keep mine until we get confirmation that better-designed Desire Zs have been produced. The replacement is from HTC and not my supplier, so I should be able to do it at any time during the next 2 years... right?
Mine is pretty solid - I even text in bed and it doesn't fall. I have opened the keyboard once or twice by accident, which is quite funny..
Desire Z on Bell Canada Hinge problem
I have already gone through two DZ's and both have the "weak" hinge. Thankfully mine does not do what is shown in the Video in post #1, thats definitely a defect in my opinion. Just to compare notes on a relative basis here is what mine does.
When the phone is closed I turn it sideways (landscape) lift it from the bottom and then press on the left and right edges with my thumbs. The screen snaps nicely into place. If I then grap the device by the top two corners of the screen and lift it straight up and hold it perfectly horizontally the keyboard drops down. However, if I lift it up at a slight angle the keyboard remains "attached" to the screen. It seems as though there is a magnet of some kind holding it in place.
I instinctively hold it with forefingers and thumb to type much as I do on my Motorola Milestone which slides straight up and down and has no "hinge".
As for lying on my back and typing in Bed if I just hold the bottom portion keyboard along then the screen drops down. HOWEVER that is an extremely awkward way to type for anyone I would imagine.
The question is, did HTC design it to work in this way knowing that people "instinctively" do these types of actions in this way?? I am not sure they conduct such a detailed ergonomic study. There are people that have no hinge issues at all, but unless they apply specific tests as I did here it would be difficult to know if they are experiencing similar problems. If they are doing what comes naturally and holding it as nature intended then they would not deem that there are any problems.

This is worse than the "Is my trackpad wobbling?!" threads on CrackBerry. It's supposed to be loose so you can open it with one finger, according to HTC. If you don't like it, take it back (you can definitely get a refund, since it's only been out like 4 days or whatever) and get a new phone. Seriously. You want a stiff slide, get a Milestone, then you have nothing to complain about.
Bought 2 today, they're (identically!) quite loose. I was really worried before buying that I'm gonna get the 'loose one' but to be honest it's not an issue as it's a very weird way to hold your phone and like others said you instinctively hold the device with your thumb and index fingers as that's where they end up when you open the phone. Furthermore, if opened and held vertically just by the bottom, the top part stays in place and only drops down at ~40 deg angle, so unless you text a lot in bed while holding the phone upside down and holding it just by the bottom bit, you won't have a problem. If I lift it up like in the video (it's actually quite an effort) the parts will separate.
Yeah, mine is the same, but dont know why people are making such a big fuss on it, why not for example make a big fuss on the speaker quality instead?
Yeah the speaker is ****, its the one thing that is crap with this phone...

First off let me say I love this phone, I really do but Motomaker has been leaving me a little sad.
So I started off by getting a 16gb model straight from AT&T since I'm not a patient person but after a bit I wanted 32gb so I sold the 16 and made one off contract on Motomaker.
The first Motomaker phone I got had scratches and dents on the screen bezel and it also looked like it had issues with the fusing as some of the plastic seemed to have gotten well into the screen.
I got a replacement and their advanced RMA was great and incredibly fast, however, the second one I got has a different issue. The power button on the new one doesn't seem to be seated right and sits lower than my previous two as well as being harder to press and not giving good tactile feedback..
Looks like I'm going to have to RMA again once I get the money back on my credit card.
Moto X you are amazing but something with the quality control is a bit lacking.
I had similar issues with my first phone. The power button was seated the same way you described, making it very difficult to actually use. The volume rocker was the exact opposite though, the whole button wobbled within the phone's frame, making it feel cheap. I requested a RMA saying that I wanted to swap colors, and only changed my accent color. The buttons on this phone are much more firm/usable.
I hope whatever issues there are down in Texas can get resolved soon. I really like this phone and Motorola to succeed but QA problems will give it a bad rep.
They didn't seem to care when I told them the damage I think if you bother calling they will change it.
i hope they get it right. mine came in with no issues. so they are capable of getting it right the fist time lol. i totally agree that they have issues though, my brother's veizon pre-order led is not near as flush as the one on my phone.
The Rogers ones I've seen (assembled in China) including mine are all flawless.
The one I got (no customization, Verizon) *works* fine but on the front-facing camera, I've noticed the felt ring is not seated correctly and creeping over the lens a little. Although I doubt Moto would give me an rma, it seems like a manufacturing defect.

I have a t mobile one and noticed it has a small scrape on the bottom back and a few plastic molding issues.
I am actually returning it now since I noticed there's eBay sellers selling black and white xt1058 models that are unbranded for significantly less. Made in China units but I figure I'll save $120 over an american unit and be fine with it. I'm in refarmed area so I don't care about the aws hspa and the non att xt1058 can have unlocked boot loader / no bloatware. Maybe the Chinese have better quality
At least, each time you replace a moto maker device you get a $10 play store credit (unless they fixed that loop hole) and supposedly the return process is easy and if you can float the $650 hold you can get it replaced without any down time.

QA problems? Unfortunately good chance it's because of the union workers down there. While majority are excellent, there are many with "I don't give a crap, union has my back no matter how crappy my work is" attitude.

Maybe not Texas is a right to work state

I know what you guys mean with the manufacturing issues. My rear camera literally has a little piece of Texas in it. I noticed when I pulled it out of the box that the lens had a little speck of tan on it. However it won't wipe off, and closer inspection revealed it was on the other side of the lens!
Doesn't seem to affect the pictures at all though, so I doubt I'll get it replaced over that. But I'm sure gonna bring it up if I ever try! :fingers-crossed:

Mine's not as bad as yours but I have a small speck at the bottom right of the circle. I'm willing to let it go since it's not noticeable except you look close enough and at the right angle under light.

So, my display is going out...:crying: It will intermittently flash on and off for no reason. The digitizer still works, even when I can't see anything I can still feel it vibrating in my hand. This also pretty much breaks Active Notifications. :crying: And Touchless Control..:crying: And twist-to-camera...:crying:
Needless to say, I have a new one coming from Verizon tomorrow. And I definitely told them about the speck in my camera too. The lady at Verizon had the nerve to ask me if I had a memory card for my phone. I told her that unfortunately the designers at Motorola had taken that option away from me. I hope they at least send me some screen protectors or something for my trouble......because I thought I was doing a good thing supporting the workers in Texas.
UPDATE
My display went the rest of the way out last night. This resulted in a useless paperweight that vibrated occasionally. The worst part of it, is that I couldn't use Motorola Migrate to get my old info! Because the screen wouldn't come on, I couldn't see the QR code to start the wifi transfer. HOWEVER, after much anguish and profanity, I managed to get Moto Migrate to connect WITHOUT THE QR CODE!! I couldn't find this method listed in any literature, but it worked for me, and my non-displaying screen.
1) The old Moto X must have the NFC on! That is the key to this. Thankfully, I had NFC on prior to my screen breaking, so I didn't have to blindly try and toggle it on. Also turn it on for the new Moto X
2) If you're like me, and your screen won't work, then you can't see the Migrate app. Thankfully, you can just use Touchless Control to open it. "Okay, Google Now. Open Migrate" Give it 15 seconds and it should be open.
3) In my case, I had to tell my new phone to accept Migrations, and tell the old phone to send them. Settings in the top right corner, and then a toggle button in the middle of the screen. (I just used my new Moto X to judge the rough placement on my broken one, and it was easy)
4) Finally, touch the backs of the phone together, and tap the screen on the NEW Moto X to use Android Beam which pairs the phones and begins Migration of old info!
Note: I got the pairing backwards the first time, and sent settings from my new phone to my old one. This didn't appear to hurt anything, but that's why I specify you make the new Moto X the receiver.
Sorry for the HUGE update guys, but this is important information. It saved my ass, to mention an enormous headache. So I hope that anybody else trying to pair Motorola Migrate with a broken screen finds this post!! :good:
