Sorry for sounding silly but is there a way to use swype as on-screen keyboard and still have prediction on the hardware keyboard? BTW thanks for all the good and hard work.

With the on screen keyboard?
In ConnectBot, this is accomplished by pressing the trackball followed by the letter i.

This is just for that app though, correct?
Is there a way to do it in any text field?
The leaked betas of the swype keyboard had a fourth keyboard with tab/up/down/left/right/page up/page down/etc. However, that seems to have been removed.
Just depends on the keyboard.

Is there any way to input a Tab into any text field with the Standard Android keyboard or the HTC keyboard ?
Swype actually still has the tab key.
If you swype from the info key to the sym key you'll get the functions keyboard which includes tab, up/down/ctrl/etc.

HAH!
WOW! How in the HECK did you find that out??
I did the entire tutorial and it never mentioned that. Swipe from the Swype key to the SYM key... How in the hell do they expect people to know that???
Anyway, I am mostly wanting this for the terminal to autocomplete file names. Unfortunately, swype isn't too useful in terminals... Switching keyboards back and forth is a pain (I used Swype for a few weeks, didn't like it).
I'll do this for now, but if anyone knows a way to do it with the normal keyboard, I'm still interested in that information!
[Edit]: Just tested it in terminal. Yeah damn that is annoying.
cd... tap cd on screen... few letters... swype to sym... tab... abc... few letters... swype to sym... tab, FFFFFFF
is there a better keyboard for the HD2? I tried using swype, but it's not the same as the android version I had on my G1, and I tried using the stock keyboard, but I must have fat fingers because I can't type too fast without tons of errors. Are there alternative keyboards (not swype) that I could use?
Just to know, have you tried the version of Swype from the 2.13 ROM?
It's a pretty substantial update and performs much better than the previous release from the 2.10 ROM.
resco keyboard pro
I think you get a 7 day trial period before it ask you to register it. The keyboards skins are available for download online off their site.
TouchPal 4.0. I love it.
I was actually surprised to see how bad HTC keyboard is on WinMo compared to Android (Hero, specifially).
I tried swype, but it's got a learning curve.
The problems I have with HTC keyboard are not so much due to the keyboard itself, but the language filter sometimes makes some strange suggestions or sometimes it won't suggest words even though you missed your keypress by one key, which is odd since the Hero was very good at word suggestions.
I notice the problem is with the English dictionary because, when I switch to Spanish or Italian, it works perfectly.
My other problem is more hardware based. Since the HD2 has no trackpad, HTC keyboard has those horrible arrow keys, and they couldn't have worse placement. Very often I'll miss hitting the spacebar and hit either the arrow keys or the "v" (most often the "v").
Typing in landscape mode is again akward because of the arrow keys, they're on the thicker side of the device (more bezel at the bottom), so you have to stretch your hand to type, and very often too, I'll hit the t9 button on/off trying to hit "A", same goes for typing "l" trying to hit "enter".
You'd think that on a device with such a vast screen real estate, missed presses would be a non-issue.
it always coming back to the xt9 mode..
TIA
start using some other keyboards like soft keyboard, better keyboard etc
I just bought my elderly dad an iconia. He's been typing away in Vietnamese with a keyboard and an onscreen viet symbols on the viewsonic gtablet.
The problem is honeycomb won't have an onscreen keyboard pop up if you have a usb keyboard plugged in. Please help me. Is there anyway I can enable both the physical and soft keyboards so he can type Vietnamese symbols?

I haven't tried it, but I would try tapping and holding the input field and see if a pop up menu comes up with the option of showing the soft keyboard?
I think you can push the up key on the tablet to bring it up, theres also settings i believe for the keyboard.
Is there any keyboard for WP on HD2 with directional keys like in winmo? It is hard to navigate or even edit without arrow keys... Or even better Swype keyboard...
