Because it could be harder? Who knows. They could be busy. I have much reason to believe they don't make a killing off of rooting the Incredible. I have customers waiting on it because I flash phones, but I know when they're ready it'll be posted.
Why don't you take on the job of rooting it? Also please package everything in a simple program like Unrevoked. Thanks! I'll be expecting it in a couple of days... So Wednesday. Also I expect you to not accept donations like them. So I'll just say hurry up!
I'm sorry if I come off a little harsh, but your statement kind of does also.

Well that's the first piece of good news I've had all day....
On a side note, since I am new to the incredible, does anybody know where Unrevoked will release it? I assume it will be unrevoked.com but want to make sure I dont miss it.
I see right now that unrevoked 3.21 is the latest, should I just look for a different version number?

With so many people keeping an eye on this, I'd just subscribe to a bunch of threads and eat some pop corn. Also check out their Twitter.
Twitter would be the best to keep track of. I would assume. Cause as soon as it gets release forums will mostlikely be flooded asap so. Either way you'll know
I'm willing to wager it'll be after Thanksgiving before we hear back from the team. I'll happily eat my words if it's sooner, but hey, we're all getting ready to eat ourselves sick soon right!

just google "unrevoked" and their twitter page should be the 3rd link.
Just a thought to try
I thank my lucky stars that I did not take the update but in the same light I have no way to test this, but someone should try to go back and try the first preliminary way ever for rooting the thing and see if they can get ADB in recovery. I say this because I do not know the extent of the download, but I do know that the old method was such a pain that many did not get it and had to wait, some just waited anyway, so give it a whack and maybe the old way will work.
Fixed my problem. Returned the stupid phone under VZW 30 no hassle return, and got a new one, didnt accept the update and now Im rooted.

hello,
i didn't write any of these exploits, just figured out the right order. If you do this, you will be able to successfully downgrade to 3.21.605, and then use the normal un-revoked from there to get s-off, at which point you can follow the other directions posted in other threads to upgrade to the latest OTA and re-root
* NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BORK YOUR PHONE*
here's the basics:
1. get the RUU for 3.21.605 from shipped-roms.com, and extract the rom.zip file from the RUU, rename to PB31IMG.zip and put on the root of your sd card.
2. download the HTC Incredible downgrade package from the cyanogen mod wiki
3. put the downgrade files in your android sdk tools folder, and push them to your phone. you don't need the rageagainstthecage exploit, because we use z4root later on.
Code:
adb push flash_image /data/local
adb push mtd0.img /sdcard/
1. download z4root from the market, and obtain temporary root by running it on your phone
2. connect to the phone via adb, and type:
Code:
su
3. mount system as rw with this commmand:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/null /system
4. follow these instructions from the cyanogen mod wiki (in adb shell):
Code:
cd /data/local
chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image
cd /data/local
./flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd0.img
reboot bootloader
when your phone re-boots, you will have to select to go into bootloader, and then select to apply the update.
it will look like it fails the first time, but it will go through the process again and succeed.
If people need more detailed instructions, I can post more precise directions later.
i just had success with this. cool
again, I did not write any of these exploits, just found the right order to do them in to downgrade from the latest OTA, even with s-on

Nice tip. Figured there had to be a way, but once I got the new phone, using Unrevoked to root was incredibly (hehe) easy. Way easier than the D1 I had before.

This method was posted on Cyanogen Mod Wiki with the disclaimer that its for Inc's with AMOLED screens only it will supposedly brick an Inc. with an SCLD screen.

But Im following a thread on android central specifically talking about the update.zip and yet there is still people bragging about installing the update...and they dont pull it from their phone first-__-
So anyway, please read these instructions before you do anything if you recieve the OTA notification, so the rest of us can have our scoop of FroYo

Dont i have to root to install the ROM?...i dont want to do that
You do not have to root.. the ROM is digitally signed by HTC, so your phone will accept it and install it as though it were the OTA.
1)Make sure your SD card is formatted in FAT32. The HBOOT can't read SD cards that aren't.
2)Take the ROM.zip from the RUU and place it in the root directory of your SD card (the main directory, not inside a folder)
3) Rename it PB31IMG.zip
4) Shut your phone off.
5) Hold down your volume down button and press the power button to boot up in HBOOT.
6) Leave the phone alone. It will go through three scans of the zip file, and say the first two times that an image isn't found, then load the data.. then it will ask you "Do you want to update now?" after it has read the zip. Press the volume up to say yes.
7) Just follow the on screen instructions from there. Takes maybe 10 minutes total. You'll be good to go after the phone reboots and says "Droooid!"
Just make sure to back up your apps first and your contacts. I did this on two of my family's four Incredibles last night. Wiped the apps on both, and the contacts. Same as running the RUU I guess. Just amke sure your battery is at least at 50% charge.
And for the usual legal reasons I must vehemently stress the disclaimer that everyone who makes roots here says: I'm not responsible if you damage your phone. Rawr! (kind of impossible since you're using an official HTC signed ROM that wouldn't even RUN for you otherwise, unless you were rooted).

False. You don't have to run unrevoked forever to get 2.2. You just need it if you want root afterwards. s-on and s-off refers to nand being unlocked or locked. You can run the RUU that is posted here with out unrevoked forever.

while it is not required, a wiped 2.2 phone will behave much better than one with stale stuff from 2.1
even on computers trying to upgrade a windows to the next version inevitably leads to some apps not liking it. the ui is an app, so the same applies.

the whole process of rooting has got nothing to do with the radio, so unless u mess with the radio, u cant really mess the radio up.
rooting is simply flashing a payload-update with the root exploit to the rom. thats it. for 2.1 unrevoked has a one step exe that u run, go get a red bull and its done. it cant get any simpler.
the phones nand has a security lock called S. when its on (S-ON) one can only flash packages that are digitally signed. obviously a payload-update for future roms isnt going to be, so u want to be S-OFF. that is where unrevoked-forever comes into place. once that is flashed on your phone, u will be S-OFF meaning that any future rom can be rooted. it doesnt really do anything else to your phone.
that being said, u dont need root or s-off for the RUU as it is an official and therefore signed package.

Wow that's wrong. The benefit of accepting the OTA rather than a RUU is keeping your settings, etc. And to put a swift end to any debate on the topic (since I certainly don't agree to attend to any incorrect claims to the contrary), please keep on thing in mind:
"Does Verizon now want to start taking 500,000 calls from the technically inept people who just want to use their phones, because they phone is now FC'ing all the time?"
Absolutely not. Same as iPhone. Apple does not want the tech support calls, and NEITHER Verizon nor Apple is telling people to wipe and start again.
I still haven't seen anyone post the update.zip. has anyone else? Am I lookingfor froyo love in all the wrong places?

the phone is not going to fc but some apps will.
most people will just reinstall the apps and use the phone as is.
sounds like you want to be one of those people and thats fine.
the fact is that the phone will run better with a full wipe before or after flashing just like it does with any other rom change.
Ok, So i've spoke with 2 people from XDA Over the Phone today both tell me to do Sdk However I am not willing to increase the risk of bricking my phone. So please do not suggest sdk,

Su (Works)
cd sdcard/Root (I've done it with both the slash in front as well and witout it so do not try and correct me because it dosen't effect how it runs)

So I get the exact same thing as what I see on the youtube videos, Then I go back into visionary and run Perm Root and it will reboot my phone and when I go into Termenal and type Su for super user I get access Denied, I have tryed tons of alternatives and I have verifyed that it is 2.2.1, I've tryed Rebooting it and checking to see if S is off and its not, I'm trying to install the ultimate droid rom in it but since I can't get into recovery because of it not being rooted it wont allow me to do anything,. First, I've used VISIONary r14 many times on multiple Glaciers without problem. It should work just fine.
Second, setting up the SDK is not hard. Whoever gave you the idea that the SDK increases the risk of bricking your device is a moron. In fact, the SDK comes with some *very* useful tools that can help you recover if your phone starts running into problems. You don't need it to root your device, but it certainly won't hurt to at least install the tools/platform-tools (you don't need the entire SDK if you don't want it).
Third, I suggest using gfree instead of root.sh because it does much more. I also suggest flashing the engineering bootloader (instructions in same thread) so that you can use fastboot (this is one of those SDK tools I was talking about). Be careful when you enter that command or you could really screw yourself.
You Dont need SDK... Just download the EASY ADB as it works just Fine. Visionary R 14 Will give you a Perm Root, just use it with terminal emulator it is Easy. The Eng. Bootloader is a must have. You can also use the g free method either one is fine. Always remember that you can Always go back to stock if needed with the PD15IMG.zip.
i've tried the both the visionary and the gfree way and i think theres something up with the root.sh files or something happened to the roms themselves to not work properly though the gfree version worked 100%. and honestly if your not comfortable with ADB pushing then your going to miss out on alot of stuff for MT4G especially if you want to be cutting edge MT4g.

I logged in just so I could comment on this..it annoyed me that much. Being as I use to have an EVO and Sprint, the myTouch was EASIER to root then the EVO and is over all a much more capable phone once rooted. I used gfree and it was CAKE to root my phone...it is now fully carrier unlocked and basically brick proof due to the EBL 85.2007. I've been on the EVO forums (my roommate has one still and I'm his flasher) and there is a crap load of outdated ROMS and mods that if you aren't careful what you are mixing and matching you will end up with a bootlooped phone. Not the case with the myTouch everything here is kept well up to date and accurate. Not sure why you felt the need to post this but it was unneeded and well off topic.

you are correct in your assumption.
The HTC Glacier and Vision have a security protocol in place that will revert the phone back to a 100% stock fashion every-time you turn off the phone. If you wish to do custom ROMs, recovery images, and radio files you must turn the "s-on" to "s-off".

You can try the sh root.sh method.
1a ) download and install VISIONary.apk. Download from here
-Looks like you've done that since you have come this far.
1b) when you run VISIONary make sure both set system to R/W and Run Visionary.sh are both checked.
2) Download the script to the root of your SDcard
This is the file
3) Extract the folder from the .zip and store the folder with it's contents onto the root of the SDcard.
4) Download Terminal emulator from the market
-Link to the market for this app.
5) open the Terminal Emulator and type
Code:
$ su
#
The Dollar Sign " $ " should change to a pound sign " # ". If the Super user program ask for your permission, you'll want to grant it. You're screen should look like the box just above this line.
6 ) Change the directory to the root folder
Code:
# cd /sdcard/root
7) run the script
Code:
# sh root.sh
make sure you do not get any errors.
If you havent you can reboot into hBoot and look for s-off.
i personally used this method to root my phone before i left the t-mobile store when i bought the phone.
I CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE IF YOU MESS UP YOUR PHONE. ROOTING ONES PHONE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS AND SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. IF YOU SHOULD BLAME ME I WILL LAUGH AND POINT.

After doing the above method you're gonna have to reinstall the recovery from Rom Manager. Watch it carefully do not let the phone sleep (I recommend going to delopment check never sleep while charging and plug it into a charger while it downloads.) You have to pay attention because it will ask for SU permissions when it finishes downloading, and it for some reason only gives you like 3 or 4 seconds instead of the usual ten. If you have already tried installing the recovery you may wanna go to the SU App and make sure that Rom Manager didn't get denied premission which is the default if you do not select Allow fast enough.

Make sure to do Nandroid Backups prior to flashing new ROMs. And just a fair warning you might want to install the .85 (engineering) hBoot.

Absolutely a great idea, little nerve wracking to make changes to hboot and radio but very worth it. The directions how to do engineering boot loader are in the ultimate s-off sticky. Confusing at first, but after you do it once it gets easier.

Trade phones back so she gets the new one. Problem solved!
Seriously though, some of these phones won't root with visionary root.sh method. Bad news is if it's not working you will need to try gfree method to root which is indicative of a phone with the emmc chip that is considered to be faulty. For more info search for the thread about emmc chips.

I would be, but it is on the horizon, as there are still some kinks.

Minus the download time, it takes about 3 minutes to root it, because all you do is push the the system file and recovery from fastboot via adb, the flash the update in recovery to enable superuser.

guys, I do not think you understand something about one clicks. They use an exploit to gain temporary root. This allows everything required to be installed to allow root to be permanent. Currently, no exploit has been found to work on the Thrive. That being said, you have to install a boot image that gives you root access. Once this is done, you can add the additional files to gain fill root. So, at present, you will need two steps. One to flash a new boot image (and recovery if you want one to allow easier mods) and then installation of superuser update if there is on and busybox. The devs are working on a single flash to allow this to be automated, but you will still have to have adb working and run fastboot to get this to work. Hope this clears up some of your questions.

And still, if you can work command prompt, and have adb set up via sdk folder, it still takes 3 minutes to push the files via fastboot, and apply the update zip in recovery.

If you mean for the thrive, you just need a adb set up, then flash the boot and recovery via fastboot and the update.zip in recovery.
The hardest part is getting adb and fastboot set up. Once you have fastboot its simple.

Thankfully for us, there were quite enough brave folks that were willing to do just that, else we wouldn't have gotten this close......
But, I am with you and am sitting back and awaiting an more bullet-proof method of rooting.

The only way to get a one-click root is to abuse an exploit. Finding an exploit is not something that happens quickly if at all and it wouldn't be an exploit that is Thrive specific, just specific to whatever version of Honeycomb.
I actually wouldn't expect any exploits to be found until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out and unites all the android platforms. More people = more chance to find an exploit.
Hey guys, so since the latest OTA, we haven't been able to downgrade nor root the shift, if we were on the latest OTA. I've been hunting through methods for downgrading and rooting, but nothing came about that actually worked. Finally having a free mind after my AP Physics exam, I got a train of though going, and tried Indirect's downgrade method, which yes, failed. What happened is when tacoroot tried to reboot the phone, it didn't have the permissions to reboot the phone, and so when the "error" on the CMD wrote that I have no permission to reboot the phone, I whipped out quick root, and did the reboots through it. Using quick root and Indirect's method of downgrading, I managed to downgrade to Android 2.2, and got to root my phone, then flash some ROMs.
Solution:
When you are in the step in Indirect's tutorial where you use the
Code:
[COLOR="Red"]adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --setup[/COLOR]
command, you'll notice that tacroot doesn't have the permissions to reboot, at that time, you have to open lyriquidperfection's "HTC Quick Root v1.1.13" application and execute the reboot to recovery command through it by clicking on the drop down in reboot options, and choosing to reboot to recovery.
When you are at the step in the tutorial when you boot to hboot in order to downgrade, you can use the Quick Root application to reboot to bootloader where you flash your downgraded PG06IMG.zip.
Links:
Indirect's - Root and downgrade for Android 2.3.4
lyriquidperfection's - HTC Quick Root v1.1.13
If any clarification is needed, please post below, this is simply a quick guide to allow people to downgrade and if they choose, root it or flash a ROM. I take NO responsibility in what you do with your device nor when you void your warranty. I take NO credit for neither Indirect's method of downgrading, nor lriquidperfection's application, though I would appreciate a thanks for my compiling this "quick guide" to help you downgrade your device. If you're looking for credits on the method and application, they should be found at those posts.
Good luck,
John
*If you want to flash a rooted version of this update, go to this thread
Just keep in mind you can't flash a new ROM to your phone until you downgrade.
local.prop: permission denied resolution by CNexus: his post
For anyone else who has problems, here's what I did. if you get the message
Code:
local.prop: permission denied
After running
Code:
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --root
Then simply run the following command again (step 2 of Indirect's method)
Code:
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/taco
The problem is that your phone resets the permissions of that directory, so it doesn't let tacoroot execute and do its thing.

Might want to add the Software Number to the OP
indirects method for 2.3.4 wouldnt work for me on the latest ota but lyriquidperfection's - HTC Quick Root v1.1.13 method rooted like a charm. i was running completely stock 2.3.4 latest with the newest hboot and with some force and annoyance managed to somehow trick the new hboot into doing the downgrade to 2.2 and i was able to get s-off/full root again.
if i can figure out what exactly i did ill post it up for everyone but im not entirely sure. it mightve been a fluke.
all i know for sure is after i got root with lyriquidperfection's - HTC Quick Root v1.1.13
i dd the misc.img a ****load of times and then dd the eng hboot a ****load of times until it <------like 30 times in a row each lol, one after another the other.
it forced the hboot to relock the htcdev unlock and accidentally took the 2.2 downgrade (PG06IMG.zip) so i could switch hboots again.
its a helluva gamble but if anyone else has unlocked through htcdev and is willing to gamble on it have fun, if you brick it isnt my fault and i hold no responsibility over it. i think i pissed the phone off and it gave up but it worked for me. it was really a combination of using the lyriquidperfection's - HTC Quick Root v1.1.13, indirects root method, and vicodans method.

Rebooted through HTC Quickroot, pressed the 3 buttons and got the "cache files" error
It gave me the "Android System Recovery <3e>" menu...but then I kinda just pulled the battery instead of selecting "Reboot system now"
Now whenever I try to go through this again to get to the "3e" menu, it just stays stuck in recovery (with the ! sign) after I press VolUp + VolDown + Power
Any help as to how to get to that menu again?

I do not think the 2.3.4 RUU is going to work for you. The issue I believe is that you didn't actually complete Indirects part of the method.
The command " adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --setup " should have gone through before you went any further. I would try starting the whole process over again.
I'll take care of it some time tonight, or tomorrow. Just will have to re-flash stock 2.3.4 to ensure everything is in order and I'll even make a video for it. Text tutorial will come first, when it does.

Thats the reason why JohnnyCakeXM posted this thread in the first place...? Because the command DOESN'T go through completely so you need to use some third party program to do the reboots for you

What he said in the OP was :
" when tacoroot tried to reboot the phone, it didn't have the permissions to reboot the phone, and so when the "error" on the CMD wrote that I have no permission to reboot the phone, I whipped out quick root, and did the reboots through it. "
So unless I'm not reading his OP incorrectly ( which is a possibility ) , the command has to go through. But it will fail to reboot, then you use Quick Root to do the Reboots. Again this is why I suggested a Clearer Step by Step OP. So that the process can be more easily followed, and diagnosed if there is an issue . It leaves a lot less to interpretation.
