i own the EVO and it is rooted running custom roms and my brother has the EPIC im a fan of both phones and im trying to get his fully rooted but am having no success
ive tried all the one click roots and they all say my phone is not connected whether usb debugging is on or off
i tried z4root and i was able to use titanium backup and remove sprint apps so i was kinda rooted with super user permissions
i installed rom manager and flashed clockwork but when i try to boot into clockwork recovery it goes to reg android recovery.i have tried manually entering recovery and it still brings me to stock android recovery
i need your help
thanks in advance for any advice
Are you holding down power, camera, and vol down buttons when trying to boot into CWM?

Restart the phone and the computer. Try a different USB port. Just keep unplugging and plugging back in until it works. Worked for me.

Ok, I have been thrown for a loop and need some help....
I had a Sprint Hero Rooted on 2.1 the .5 sprint update
Tried to run the new update but it kept getting corrupt.
Did a Nandroid backup
So I reverted back to the .5 RUU
Then it wanted me to update to the old .6 update, so I did
Hoping then I would upgrade to the new .6 but it was not able to find a new update?
Wanted to restore my nandroid update.
When I try to boot into the recovery mode I get a picture of a phone with a red Explanation mark in a triangle.
There is a bunch of people on the net that say they have seen or gotten it, but no one says how to get rid of it? So I can not get in to recovery mode at all.
Tried the home+power boot
Tried the volume down + power then home
always ends in the same screen with no recovery.
Tried multiple times to install the .5 RUU
Reset phone
never can get back there to the recovery?
Phone will boot fine into 2.1 and run fine..
Anyone have any ideas, I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks
Did u try placing the recovery on ur SD card and flashing it threw terminal on ur phone

You lost root, as far as I remember the .6 update was to block the corrent rooting efforts that you see around here, thats why the rooting instruction say to go back to the .5 ruu.
The corrupted update your getting is just sprints server being bogged down.
What you need todo is go back and re-root your phone. Dont worry about the update untill it gets released into one of the current roms or until you here that its safe todo without losing root.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed that! I had never tried a backup before root, so I did not think about that. Now I know and hopefully this will help someone that googles this issue, as there is never a clear answer until yours.
Thanks again...
So in closing of this thread:
if you are trying to get into recovery and see "Phone with Explanation mark" image.
it's because your phone is not rooted
So root your phone and it's all good
Also If you ever run an ruu on your phone you can kiss your root good bye no matter what version you do. but if you have nand backups you can reroot your phone and then restore one of your backups since there stored on your sdcard.

Correction: If you see this symbol, it means you don't have a custom recovery image in the phone. You can actually be rooted and still get that symbol if you haven't yet flashed a custom recovery after you rooted. You need to have a custom recovery (that requires root) to avoid getting that symbol when you try to boot into recovery.
Most rooting methods on here automatically include flashing a custom recovery as one of the steps, so this isn't really a big issue....but I just wanted to clarify the specifics of this for anyone else who reads.

Nope once its on there you should be able to hold the home key while rebooting to get into recovery.

only way can get there is through flash clockworkmod recovery then select either reboot in recovery mode or turn of handset and restart with home and power button, what ever flash clockworkmod recovery does to make it work as soon as it has been used i am guessing it is deleted or modified,
i have tried running it then checking files on sd card but cant see anything different

The recovery console isn't on your SD card, it's flashed to a partition inside your phone's memory. So you won't see anything different on your card.
And if you can boot into recovery by "restart with home and power button" like you say, then it's working as it should -- that's how you get into recovery.

just had a friendly member point out what i was starting to suspect the problem lies with the custom recovery being flashed back to stock on every restart, the shell command here
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh this stops any custom recovery on reboot. any advice on what tools to edit or remove
Delete that file when you get root I guess. Our as soon as you reboot into clockwork recovery, flash a rom. Use nfinitefx if you want a stock one
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I always had root that was where the confusion was, what i did not know was the script was running with every boot of the handset and removing the recovery that was there as it was identified as unofficial and exclamation mark could be down to me using many methods to flash i may have renamed original recovery so when it goes to exclamation it is because cant find original recovery whether handset is rooted or not.

would that have worked? i thought about it many many times but as i had never flashed before was unsure how many times phone would reset and if it did before it was installed could i lose my recovery.
on the plus side the 2 months i have spent trying to solve this i have a much broader view of the workings of my handset and without the many members like yourself who take the time to reply and try to help others i would have given up a long time ago.
Brian
I'm sure if you deleted that script a custom recovery would have stuck

In clockwork recovery there is a backup function. Its basically the same thing as a nandroid but it does have a few more features like only restoring your data.

This sound like you are using rom manager to me from the android os. Is this right? If so it also (could be or) sounds like you are entering the default recovery rather than clockwork. Did you install clockwork via one-click or alternative method first?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
One click but I have installed the the one from rom maager..
When the phone reboots from ROM Manager, you need to hold the camera+vol down+power buttons before it starts rebooting.
I tried it already,I just noticed it says android system recovery (2e)
Try turning your phone off than turning on with the three button method. Hold power+volume down+camera. That should get you into clockwork. Lettering should be green and not blue like stock recovery. If it appears blue than you dont have clockwork installed. Try the one click method. It has clockwork redirector which means any apps you may use that has recovery options it'll take you straight to clockwork. Hope this helps.
I have tried that and yes the letters are blue and says android system recovery 2e..is there a manual .img I can flash via adb or terminal emulator I have tried one click that's how I rooted but no luck,I tried rom manager install recovery but no luck.,am starting to miss amon-rec.img but loving the epic so far ..help guys please....the only I can say I miss about the evo is 2.2 but not much

Try the all in one. Its a sticky in the dev section. It roots and installs clockwork with redirector. Or if you can find the one click clockwork recovery alone. Maybe that'll help. Don't ue rom manager so I'm sorry can't help on that app.

It sounds like you don't have CW recovery installed properly. You can't do it from rom manager if you are on stock kernel. Use the newest one click, I think its like version 2.5.5 or something like that. Then boot while holding the 3 buttons. It should bring you to a screen that looks very much like the amon ra recovery (minus the carebear).
Hold down all three buttons until it boots to CWM. If the blue letters still come up then you don't have CWM. The script for the CWM redirector doesn't work properly on my Epic.

Unsure what that means. Does rom manager even install cw? Try the one click. You appear to be doing the right combo to get u to the recovery screen but it seems the default is where you are going to. One click root and cwm with redirector that puppy and let us know how it goes.

Hi guys i just installed this ROM Vibrant_AOSPish_JK2 on my vibrant and all was perfect. Then i tried to condition my battery. Turned off phone with power cable connected and tried to go into recovery mod but phone stuck at vibrant screen. I pulled power cable turned off the phone and turn it on regularly and all was fine, then i turn it off again without power cable connected and it stuck again on vibrant screen. Then i went to ROM Manager and boot to recovery same thing happened phone stuck on vib screen. And now i cant turn it on anymore it stuck on vibrant screen every time. I tired to pull out battery... What should i do? Thanx in advance
Are you using the three button combo? If so and its still not working, try downloading quickboot from the market.

I can't turn on my phone thats the problem... I tried the magic combo without luck... I had busybox installed. Maybe the problem was because i didnt have cwm properly installed. I renamed cwm installation folder to update.zip and that run it from 2e recovery. After that i can access cwm but need to repeat the procedure every time.
Finally i succeeded with Odin to solve my problem. Now im on stock rom again. Only this time i installed cwm 2.5.1.2 trough ROM manager but phone still goes to default recovery i dont know if this is normal? I want to flash to Froyo Rom where i can find clear tested version? Thank you guys for replaying and trying to help

I'm running cwm 2.5.1.2 also, and rooted with froyo+voodoo lag fix on vibrant, phone's running great, just trying to get rid of bloatware right now, my recovery boots fine, I wiped everything then reverted back to stock 2.1 when I had issues then updated through kies to 2.2, ran super one click root, and ran voodoo through odin, got rom manager from market and recovery worked perfect. hope this helps

the problem is, the AOSPish JK2 rom doesn't install busybox properly. You'll have to reinstall AOSPish jk2, then before rebooting, install busybox from the market. then it'll work. (the EXACT method has been described in the AOSPish jk2 thread many time, but hasn't been updated in the op)
I know for the busybox process i did that but something went wrong obviously. I repeated the process and for now everything is ok recovery is working. Thanx for help guys i appreciate that
all of the roots i have tried are out of date and don't work or just don't work at all, superoneclick doesn't work adb doesn't recognize the device etc etc.

thanks man that did the trick! now is there a way to unroot it like my NC If i needed too send it back or is it useless and the manufacturer will know if I rooted it anyway?

ok so I rooted it, flashed CWM but for some reason it messed up my media and I couldnt access my music so I figured I would flash the stock rom back onto it, so I went into CWM and tried flashing the stock ROM but it says no files found when I install from SDcard... now I have no rom on it and it just boots into CWM when i power on.
okay well a couple months ago I permarooted my phone and flashed a custom rom but I can't remember which one I used all I can say is that I cannot do anything no more with my phone in a way because I keep trying to turn s-on but superuser is not letting me because it's basically broken. I try to open up superuser to see whats wrong but it just shows me a white screen. so I find an update for superuser but I don't know how to install it anyway but the clockwork recovery mode way. So I try to reboot into clockwork recovery but my phone just gets stuck in the mytouch 4g screen and never boots into recovery, so I am forced to take out the batttery and put it back in. I need an answer by today hopefully

I think you update superuser in the market. Try flashing clockworkmod recovery from the ROM Manager app, then boot into recovery (if you need to) and see if it works. If not, I have no clue what your problem is. Sorry, hope I helped. Press thanks if I did
Forgot to mention that when I try to flash recovery or anything because super user is not working I can't install clockrecovery or go Into it with bootloader because it just freezes at touch 4g screen

OK. Are you sure you are rooted/S-OFF? Boot into bootloader by holding power + volume down to see if you have S-OFF.

I think the solution is to update super user but I can't update super user unless I'm in the clockwork recovery mode and stuff which I can't get into unless there is another way to update super user because when I open super user it just gives me a blank white screen
