Hi all,
Picked up my Galaxy tab today from CPW, simply because they seem to be doing the best deal at £469 with a memory upgrade to 32GB
Just a quick question...I've seen that the UK Galaxy doesn't seem to like full sites, only mobile versions. I've been told that updating to the JK5 release fixes that - is this the case?
If so, is it a case of simply flashing the one file and making sure Re-partition isn't selected for it to work? I don't want to brick my brand new device, but I'd like it so the standard browser likes full sites rather than having to download a third party one.
Thanks all,
Try downloading Dolphin HD web browser and setting it up to desktop mode.
Not only does this browser perform better, it also has more intuitive features, IMO.

Trouble is you can't get into sites like full desktop BBC iPlayer with this approach. The only way I managed to do it (and I tried pretty much everything) was to flash to a later ROM.
Regards,
Dave
To be honest you would need to use three different browsers to get complete experience. stock browser is pretty slow.

Agreed, I mainly use Opera, Firefox and Stock. The latter because it supports flash, Firefox is well, Firefox, and Opera is quite slick for some quick surfing.
Guys - how do I select desktop mode in the stock browser?
I flashed from JJ3 to JK5 and it's still showing the mobile version of the site. How can I change it? Thanks
Ok - well no joy there then. I'm flashing JJ4 then will apply the JK5 patch to see if that works like it did for Dave.

You need to enter "about:useragent" in the address bar and select the Desktop useragent.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave,
started flashing this way anyway in case it caused issues going from JJ3 to JK5 rather than JJ4 - JK5. I'll let you know how i get on
UPDATE: Thanks Dave, all up and running on the iPlayer!

Does a modern html5 site like this http://sammystodos.brandonaaron.net
works on Nexus One or Desire?
It seems that the browser doesn't support standards as much as safari on iPhone..
Chrome is by far the best browser on the market, followed by Opera.
Eventually they will merge everything that desktop's Chrome can do into Android..
But so far - yes, that website works fine, except for editing the fields that you added. I assume that can easily be fixed by tweaking the site itself.
I can confirm that its working on the nexus one with to stock browser.

Which "Chrome" browser are you speaking of? I see a couple that say they only replace the logo, but none claiming to be anything different than the stock browser.

Can you actually type?
I tried it on the Desire browser and it looks exactly like yours, but I cannot type. Holding the Menu button to bring up the keyboard doesn't work either.
Checking the checkboxes and using the trash can icon to delete items do work.

Why rewrite the whole thing of they're both based on WebKit and Chrome obviously has awesome code.

How is it better?
It's Fennec, which can do everything Firefox can do, including making use of the desktop addons, and it supports Flash 9.4
This will be an ongoing problem with HTML5.
"how does it look on this browser ??"
This is what people dont get about Flash. You have complete control over how everything looks. You dont have that control in HTML , everything is still browser dependent.
Not saying this cant be ironed out..but the impression that a <video> tag is going to solve HTMLs shortcomings is silly. As it stands the browsers are already divided over codec support.
Hi guys, i wanna take advantage of this thread to now more real-life web browsing issues.
How well works this sites on the N1 or HTC Desire browser? (without adding any ad-hoc apps)
- www.facebook.com (does the chat work?)
- www.youtube.com/html5 (how well run the html5 video)
Can u compare them to a normal web browser or iphone?
I'm having a problem with the web browser.
Basically it keeps closing when I click on a link. Example, right here on the XDA forum when I click on one of the threads the web browser just shuts down & returns to the home screen. I had it just a day & took it back to the shop & they swapped for a brand new one.
Got home tried the web browser & it did exactly the same. I've not loaded any apps its straight out of the box, set up wifi & fire up the web browser.
Also I changed the UA string to desktop but it doesn't work either. Got no problems with my HTC Desire or the Dell Streak.
Any others having the same problem. Looks like I might have to return it again tomorrow.
I have experienced this too a couple of times. I found deleting cache data and cookies then also disabling plugins in browser settings seemed to fix this. Not a major issue.

Same here.
Strangely enough it only happened here at xda-devs but doing as you say cleared the issue and it's been right as rain ever since.
What does disabling plugins do? Does it stop flash from working? And how about the UA string, why won't it stay in desktop mode?
Thanks
As far as i can tell disabling plugins doesn't appear to do very much. I noticed YouTube videos will stop playing in the web browser (but will play in YouTube app perfectly fine) and that's about all. Flash support in this version of the browser is so minimal that it is barely worth having or switching on.
I have no idea about the UA string.
i had that problem on a nexus turned off my locations by wifi in settings and worked fine.
OK I've returned the phone for full refund at the shop I bought it from. I'm going to give the Galaxy S a final chance though as I will buy another from a different shop. I'm thinking it could be due to fact that the previous shop stock was from a dodgy batch of phones.
I think you'll be disappointed, sounds more like a software issue than a hardware one and I cant believe a batch of phones had a software flash go wrong like that. What id like to know is if this is just a Galaxy S thing or not? As I thought it was the same browser on all eclair phones.
I have a HTC Desire aswell. The web browser on the Desire doesn't have any of the issues I'm seeing with the Galaxy S. The problem I have with the Desire though is the external speaker volume is too low & tinny, but most significant is the pink tint when on the lowest brightness setting (I use the phone a lot in dark conditions). In saying that I noticed that the Galaxy lowest brightness setting is still much brighter than the Desire.

In what way?
I'm using it over the default browser and love it.
Ok, my browser (both the default one and Dolphin HD) shuts down randomly back to the main screen. Usually it's preceded by a single vibration, followed by three quick vibrations before it happens. This happens regardless of what website I am on.
I didn't have this issue at all on 2.1, and to be honest I really wish I hadn't bothered updating the phone as sites loaded and ran quicker on 2.1. Wondering if you guys have any ideas.
My baseband is I9000XXJPM

The vibration pattern you mention are indicative to a Force Close procedure.
Clearly something is interfering with the Internet App.
What happens after a reboot?
It's the same after a reboot. I rebooted it this morning before coming into work. Later in the morning I was on the internet on my phone and the same thing happened.
edit: I upgraded via the reg-hack to force Kies to give me the update. The JPM firmware is onlly for nordic regions, I'm wondering if maybe the proper European firmware will solve the problem...

I would say it looks quite good that you have a problem with the ROM.
I would put the correct ROM on your SGS and if Kies is problematic use Odin.
There is a great information link on how to use Odin to upgrade a ROM at How to use Odin to Upgrade the SGS to Froyo.

Dolphin, skyfire (i really hate this over hyped crappy product) uses stock browser engine. So, on froyo they perform as the default browser. Browser on froyo sucks badly. I browse quite often and got a few fc (vibrates.. phone unusable for seconds, that happen when an app FC in official froyo) or simply self close. Plus how much resources eats (cpu + mem).. simply pathetic. Eclair browser performance was way better..

That's just your opinion and you are quite entitled to it especially if you are experiencing the problems you mention.
Mine however performs without a hitch. It's quick, reliable and does exactly that as I ask of it.
Any way to make it happen? A lot of people he websites i've tried are giving me the mobile site and it's getting on my nerves.

Unfortunately, you will have to do this after each reboot of the device. This has been an issue from the earliest versions of Android and Google seem to be incapable of finding a solution to what on the face of it seems to be a relatively simple problem.

Dolphin Pad seems to be a bit better about remembering this...although some sites still insist on loading the mobile versions, at least it seems to remember the setting once it's set. It's a good browser anyway, I keep going back and forth between the normal browser and it, can't decide which one I like better. Both are good.

What are you talking about? I set defalt browser to desktop a month ago and it still shows as desktop.
That's not the same thing - that just renders in desktop mode. Sites can (and some still) redirect you to an m. version. The difference being major HTML/CSS /JS(Q) etc. Optimization for mobile browsing is still a concern for a lot of Web developers.
You can set to render Desktop but the sites that check mostly doesn't care what you have it set at. If you don't meet its criteria for a Desktop browser they will redirect you to a m. version (IF they have that functionality in place - not all sites do)
EDIT***
I'd also like to add that the the UserAgent setting not being permanent is in all likelihood a Honeycomb bug. Nobody can get it to stick using the stock browser however it works flawlessly on 2.x OS versions.
I just went into the browser settings, under advanced, changed to desktop and I don't get the mobile sites anymore.

my vote to Opera. have been using it for a while on phone and iconia. Love it. Dolphin and stock are good to though.
dolphin hd on phone. most every thing else is crap. but when it comes ro my iconia, opera is almost flawless and doesnr end up hanging like dolphin and stock. and it seems to handle flash a lot better. with other browsers id have to set flash to on demand. with opera I can keep it always on and keeps running smooth. the tabs/windows are also a lot better to look at
Opera with flash and stock.
I think that opera mobile is great for thios tablet but it's lucking the option to change agent ;(

Still boggles my mind that Samsung manufactures the best screen displays in the industry then dumbs us down to mobile only displays with no ussragent settings option. (the Verizon Charge is the only Samsung device I know of that does have these options).

You need to root and have ClockWorkMod on your Note to flash those files.
Here is the link on how to root and install CWM5. It's a long read but basicly you download the root programme, the correct modified Kernel file, extract the kernel into the root programme folder (do this 2 times until you get a zip file), then let the programme do the magic (takes 2 mins).

Thank you.And does it also support the text reflow which is not working properly in the stock browser?,I am using the Opera but relutantly mainly for those two reasons.
I have another reason idon't use the stock browser.
You can't have the buttons that let you adjust the text size to the screen as much as you want.
At first i was convinced that it was a mistake on my part, but no, as hard to believe as it is they dropped something as essential as this, they did.
Could someone post firmware specific browser links?
I am for instance currently on XXKKA.
Yes, reflow would be very nice. I use Dolphin HD but reflow doesn't work there either. Rotating the display triggers text reflow though...

why you guys not try firefox? reflow, user agent, plus the powerful adblock plus!
The reflow in stock works once...many third party browsers I can double tap a number of times for continual reflow.
The zoom icon allows continual reflow also but it's not available on stock.
