My wife wants a Galaxy Tab, but I have a few questions first before I buy one..
She currently have unlimited internet on her phone. Now, Can I switch the sim that comes with the Galaxy Tab with the one She has now that has unlimited internet?
Thanks
As it comes, with the original firmware no. You'd have to flash the euro firmware in order to be able to use it as a phone+EDGE. You also need another sim card from T-Mobile that has voice and data activated.

1.Flash Euro version Rom
2.Insert T-mobile Sim with Unlimited Data plan
3.Done?
thanks
You will only get phone service no internet at all since tmobile is blocking the internet of all tabs running on non web connect plans, and web connect plans can only be on separate accounts not on voice plans

It should be some clarification done. Wifi internet will work with or without Sim card. Btw. the tab can operate on 5GHz wifi which is almost free fron interference.
You can buy a sim card with 7 days data pass for $10 and try. My works with prepaid for voice calling and wifi for data.
Cheers
iPad it is then

The AT&T Tab is released in the US tomorrow, Sunday 11/21/2010.
I don't know if anyone has one yet and was able to make calls on the device.
I also don't know if you can take a regular AT&T SIM and insert it in the Galaxy Tab.
It's a mystery.

It does take a SIM card. The 360 degree view on AT&T website shows the slot is there. Just not yet sure if it is a standard or micro SIM card slot. But, I am 99.99% sure it is a standard SIM card slot. Haven't heard of Samsung using the micro on the device yet.
It is a standard size SIM. I was able to use my SIM out of my Nexus One

Is it possible to switch my SIM card between a T-Mobile smartphone (Vibrant) and the Galaxy Tab or does it have to provisioned specifically for the Tab?
Didnt work for me.

Unfortunately, i can't say about USA and their contracts and activations and whatevers (which is your case), in case of Europe the answer is of couse yes, you can switch SIMs as you wish, as there is no direct link between the SIM card and any device.
Yes you can. I switch between my nexus and galaxy tab. But that's just me. If you can get the data plan from your phone working on your tab then your golden. Don't ask how I did it though.

Negative, in order for the tab to connect using 3G, it has to have a "webconnect" data plan like the usb stick that you use with laptops. This is different from the data plan that the vibrant has. I was in TMo earlier today to buy a Tab and asked, there was a rep there that personally tried to do the same thing. I didn't buy the tab though, I'm not sure if I want to pay for data on 2 devices ocnsidering I may not use 3G on the Tab much. Maybe I'll wait for the wifi only.

On which version of tab? I am thinking to buy the AT&T version of Tablet if I can use my smartphone SIM from X10. I intend to use tablet only with WiFi 99% of the time. But would like to have the flexibility to use smartphone SIM while on travel/vacation.
u should be able too
Europe, Hungary
SIM cards can be swapped freely between the tab and a regular phone. Service limitations may occur depending on the SIM card inserted.
I use my tab as a work phone too, and I've got a data plan with a voice plan by definition a smart phone plan. Works great
I have been reading the unlocking / voice calling threads about the galaxy tab and they are really informative. However, with the thread growing so long and so many different carriers being discussed, I lose track of which version is doing what.
So, since I am buying one today, I would really like to know which carrier would be the best to unlock here in the US. Should I buy the AT&T or T-Mobile vesrion? Does unlocking or flashing one or the other provide better use or functionality than the other?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
JT
^from what i have read on here the tmo version is not compatible at the moment with the unlocks;
hence the at&t version is best in usa; and the bell canada version in CDA..
enjoy!
i would go with att because it will be compatible with Euro 3G frequencies also you will be able to hack to get phone calls AND 3g. I believe Tmobile is only getting voice and edge at the moment...

Because they are obviously more difficult to unlock and are probably less compatible with any other countries network. Almost every carrier worldwide uses GSM, sim cards. So version nor sprint wouldnt be a good choice since they don't use sim cards.

Yes you would! A TMo Tab still supports regular 2100MHz UMTS.

1. Both at&t and tmobiles tabs can be easily carrier (network) unlocked. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and will not work in Europe. Also I am not sure that anybody knows how to switch these tabs from one carrier to another.
2. Another story about getting voice and 3G in the US. So far the best case for using tmobile phone sim presents at&t tab. Tmobile does not recognize this tab and their broadband device and allows for voice calling.
I could have voice and EDGE on tmobile using at&t tab with flashed EUR firmware and bell modem.
'I'm with Verizon's tab in SF, USA. Rooted with 4Zroot.
Using Droid X overclock application (market) on other extra features only.
GV & Skype (mod for 3G), can make calls & receives with both 3G (data plan $20-1Gb) & Wifi plane mode. I hope this helps.

Is it possible to root the Sprint version? Can you run custom roms?
Tethering with my Droid X is working too. I haven't done the recovery yet, waiting for stable version.

I am new to all this and just want to be 100% clear.
If I have a TMob Tab I have to use an ATT sim. If I have a ATT Tab I can use either ATT or Tmob sim.
If I use the ATT Tab with my current Iphone 3gs sim (unlimited everything) I will have full voice and 3g function?
If I use the Tmobile Tab with my ATT sim (unlimited everything) I will full voice and only 2g data?
Im sorry for asking such a simple question but I just want to be sure before I buy a Tab today.
Thank you all in advance.
Att and tmobile are using different frequencies thus 3G won't work if you are not using sim and tab from the same carrier. You can get only EDGE.
Att tab allows for voice and data when using t-mobile sim with voice and data plan.
I don't have knowledge of whether t-mobile allows the same with att sim.

Thanks, that cleared it up for me.
I'd be happy with a TMob tab that had voice and Edge at this point. I'm almost always in WiFi anyway.
I picked up a Tmob tab today, if things dont look up soon I will return it and get the ATT.
Hey guys,
Still trying to determine which brand of tab i should get. I have a work air-card with an AT&T sim in it. Will this work with the AT&T version of the tab? The sim is supposed to be used in the aii-card so as long as it does not report back to AT&T that it is in a device which it was note designed to be in I'll be fine. The air-card plan does cost more than the normal plan, so i don't think they will complain about this, but just thought i would check.
As far as i could tell no it wont work with the aircard sim with the data feature being a bit dofferent from the one you need that att is selling right now which is the smart phone plans for the galaxy tab
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
i believe that the tab uses the micro sim. Not %100 sure.
The At&t tab uses a normal sized SIM card so it'll fit. Your aircard plan will work, but if you flash it to make phone calls then you will get charged extra since broadband connect plans do not come with voice allocation.
I have an HTC One X on At&t that has a micro SIM and unlimited data. Is it possible to just pop it into the Nexus 7 and use its cellular connection? Thanks in advance

Should be able to yes, but for Data only of course.
Has anyone actually tried this yet? I'm on T-Mobile, and if it would be possible to swap my SIM between my phone (Nexus 4 on order) and the 3G Nexus 7, I'd certainly buy the N7. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a clear answer on this.
If AT&T screens out the IMEI it won't work.

T-Mobile is already confirmed to be screening out the IMEI of the Nexus 7.
I do see you have posted in the Springboard forum. In theory the Springboard SIM (trimmed) should work fine.
Any update on At&t cellphone sim working in an N7?
T-Mobile Sim tied to IMEI
I just purchased T-Mobile's prepaid data plan. There's a couple of things. When setting up the SIM, they did require a IMEI to activate the data. Without it, it showed T-Mobile as the carrier on the lock screen but never pulled data. And T-Mobile's SIM rules require that if you do prepay, you must reload/use it as frequent as not having a 90 day window between uses/purchases... otherwise the SIM will be deactivated and you'll have to do it all over again.
Hope that helps.

I think that's because, when you give T-Mobile an IMEI on prepaid, they use that to determine whether they are going to provision you a voice or data line. You can still probably use that SIM in other tablets or maybe even mobile broadband devices. Unclear whether it'd work fine in tablets or phones with IMEIs they don't recognize. They'd probably block it if you put the SIM into a phone they recognize.

The SIM they gave me was specific for their data only plans.
Nonetheless, I think the system doesn't differentiate between types of SIM until it gets activated.
