Is the Fascinate Considered Part of the Verizon Droid Family? - Fascinate General

Is the Fascinate considered a part of Verizon's Droid campaign. Like Droid 2, HTC Droid Incredible, etc.?
Or is it an outlier like the LG Ally?

No. The Droid family of phones should all have "Droid" in the name and none of them have Bing

yeah, they got the raw part of the deal... no bing.

Poor souls.

I actually like the Bing app for some stuff. I don't agree with the decision to make it the default for everything and not give users a way to change it though.

There is no REAL standard for the marketing dept, but the loose consensus is that anything with Bing is not considered "Droid"
But heres the REAL SKINNY: "Droid" is a registered trademark, owned by George Lucas and Lucasfilm LTD. To use it in naming a phone, you must pay a licensing fee to them. Samsung and LG decided not to. Its as simple as that. To Motorola and HTC, carrying the "Droid" moniker is well worth it, as many people have now synonimized "Droid" with, "top of the line Verizon phones"

Its actually a phone that is a high end Vzw exclusive makes the Droid category. Because the Galaxy S is not an exclusive its not a" DROID".
Lg is flooding the low end of the market. Even Motorola has the new citrus that is not a Droid because it is entry level.

The DROID 1 and DROID 2 aren't exclusive. There are GSM models of both of those available, the Milestone and Milestone 2.

Actually not at all to start a fight "Droid 1" and "Droid 2" are absolutely exclusive to Verizon. That actually makes those exclusive if only by name. Although you can get the exact same GSM phone it is called a milestone. Even tho it isn't branded by "Droid" it actually is, in a way because "Droid" is more or less a certain type of phone with android OS. So although it isn't branded Droid and is not actually in the Droid li e technically speaking you could say its part of the "Droid" family. Either way it's better than any of the Droid phones, minus a little frozen yogurt.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

The Droids absolutely are exclusive to Verizon -- it's just that "exclusive", to U.S. carriers, only means exclusive in the U.S. market.
It's just like how AT&T markets the iPhone as an exclusive -- yet it's also available on a number of providers outside the U.S.
American carriers aren't competing against European or other providers, so all that matters to them as far as "exclusivity" goes is the U.S. market.

Depends, on the particular contract that they sign, and who is retain the publishing/marketing rights for the phone. Whoever owns them pays for them. But it makes more sense for it to be VZW

Verizon vs. Sprint Version

I just read the Verizon Droid version of the Hero will be coming out on the 6th.... Now my question is if the Sprint version is any different from the Verizon version.... are they identical? I know maybe a few physical differences, but what about internally?
Thoughts?

Verizon has a past history with neutering their phones, for whatever reasons, I'm assuming cost is the biggest one.
For example, the Touch Pro for Sprint came with 288MB of RAM, and the Touch Pro for Verizon only had 192MB of RAM.
While I haven't seen the internal specs for it yet, don't be surprised if they do something similar with the Hero, since they are already really chummy with HTC.
well the verizon phone is the motorola droid, there's already a lot of specs out for it.. all in all its a beast, but its on verizon, and I don't like verizon's attitude of locking everything down
I think the phone will do well, but its not by HTC so there's no sense ui, and it comes out of the box with android 2.0 (so hopefully we'll get it soon then too)

The Verizon Droid is a Motorola phone. The Sprint Hero is an HTC phone. They are completely different animals, but both use Android as their OS, but the Droid uses Android 2.0 and Hero Android 1.5 (though Hero will be getting an update to 2.0).

hero vs. hero
The Verizon hero is just about the same as the Sprint hero. The hardware is different, like the touch sensitive buttons. It's called droid eris also. And price wise Sprint is cheaper than gettin the Droid or the mytouch 3g on T-Mobile, just saying.

Indeed: With a 15% discount (from my job) on Sprint, I'll save ~$1300 on a family data plan over the course of two years, as compared with a similar plan w/ required data additions on Verizon. Even without the discount, it'd be a ~$900 difference. DROID's nice, but it's not worth that much more (especially without an equivalent of xda-dev), and it's definitely worth spending the extra money upfront for the Sprint version of Hero/Eris...as long as Sprint covers your area well.
Other than the touch sensitive keys, the Droid eris and Sprint hero are the same. Verizon is selling it for 99 but the monthly bill will be adding that 80 dollar difference in no time.
And why does everyone keep talking about the Motorola Droid. He's asking the difference between the Sprint and Verizon hero.

anyways, is the sprint hero the unanimous decision here? being that the service area is in good standing with where i live for both providers?
I would say its all in preference. You can ask 100 people this question and get all different answers, lol. My personal opinion is Sprint(which I have) because I personally think the plans are better and cheaper and from what I hear Verizon tries to screw you every which way they can. And I know they used to gimp the HTC phones, I know they did with the Touch Pro. To each there own as they say. Everyone will have different opinions, one thing for sure though is this phone kicks ASS!!!
im with sprint 110%
i am extremely happy with what i get from sprint
sprint has taken a major turnaround and now they are an awesome company
and its only gonna get better with time and all these new phones coming out
I thought the Eris (Verizon) also has a proximity sensor and the Sprint version does not.
I'd say choose your Hero based on the network as there is not much of a difference...I can't complain about Sprint here in Denver (especially when I'm up in the mountains...Sprint has all the major ski resorts covered in 3G goodness!)

Sprint always does this they get a big flagship phone but then they let them get long in the tooth or a they Target to take on another phone, also they really bank on that phone instead of diversifying
Examples
HTC touch
Samsung instinct
Palm pre
And it looks like the evo will follow the trend atleast it was spec'd decently well to start instead of being DOA like before
I think Sprint is banking on this echo more than they should

When HTC announces new phones, expect Sprint to get rebranded versions months later (see: EVO, Shift, Hero).
seems like sprint always focuses their attention to one or two phones
I wish Sprint would come out with one really nice new phone already, like the evo, but updated to be high-end in the newer market...
The best device, it seems, that was announced by HTC is the Flyer. That looks pretty cool.
and when sprint gets a new android whoever knows when later cellsouth will get it
You think Motorola will finally give Sprint some attention? Verizon brought the majority of Motorola's mobile revenue but now that Verizon will probably be spending the majority of their advertising coin on promoting the Iphone Motorola must be switching gears, as we starting to see with the introduction of the Atrix on At&t.
I'm also a little split with my upgrade. I don't know whether to upgrade on Sprint and risk my 4g device becoming obsolete when Sprint adopts LTE, as one of the top CEO has admitted they are considering, or jump ship and join T-mobile.
Whats your guys opinion on your next upgrade?

Sorry about that went really of track . It meant to be a comment on how Sprint next flagship device will probably be a Motorola device and not a HTC device.

[Q] Do you think Samsung is bastardizing their Galaxy S line?

Samsung has the following phones out for Android for all carriers here in the U.S.:
Captivate
Continuum
Vibrant
Galaxy S
Epic 4G
Indulge
Mesmorize
Showcase
Fascinate
Nexus S
Prevail
Gem
Replenish
Transform
Intercept
Sidekick 4G
Acclaim
Showcase
Droid Charge
That's a LOT of phones to keep updated, support, and sell. It feels like a Hollywood actor screwing his way through all the LA babes: Not focusing on one and sticking with it. My big problem is that our Epic 4G, still arguably one of the fastest phones on the market, has been sorely overlooked.
Whenever I pull out my phone, people ask "Is that an iPhone?" or "Is that a Droid?" I have to always reply, "No, it's an Android phone." I can't say "Epic 4G", because they'll have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. The iPhone is an icon. The Droid is an icon. However, I feel as though the rest of the Android phones have become too transparent. One could argue that we have a choice now... but do we now have TOO many choices now? Too many choices that even the good phones have become lost in the mix?
Oh, and I didn't mean to call out Samsung, but HTC is guilty of this as well. Motorola isn't too bad, but HTC and Samsung go through phones like water.
Discuss...
I was actually thinking about this the other day. And I agree with you completely.
Honestly i think samsung needs more advertising, i mean they barely had any for like the first 3 months of any galaxy s phones coming out and now there is none..
Oh even tho i hate to say this when people ask me what kinda OS is on it i say android, then there like what?
Then i say droid and their like ohhhhhhhh cause of damn verizon commercials!!!
People only know of 2 types of phones for android and thats all motorolla Droids and HTCs EVO These are the most popular and well known phones cause they have commercials like every 3 min on a lot of tv channels.
I think they need more advertising..
Just my opinion
I agree with you i still feel i have the top of the line phone and still the best hardware of anything out there!! I have all my friends drooling over the epic compared to there Vibrant or Captivie and even iphone people! They are so envious..
Galaxy S Variants:
Captivate - AT&T
Vibrant - T-Mobile
Galaxy S - International
Epic 4G - Sprint
Mesmorize - US Cellular
Showcase - Cellular South
Fascinate - Verizon
Continuum - Verizon
Other Samsung Android Phones:
Indulge - MetroPCS
Nexus S - T-Mobile
Sidekick 4G - T-Mobile
Prevail - Boost Mobile
Gem - Verizon
Droid Charge - Verizon - Not out yet.
Replenish - Sprint
Transform - Sprint
Intercept - Sprint
Acclaim - US Cellular
Its really not that bad. They have 7 Galaxy S phones on 6 different US carriers and the International Galaxy S on multiple carriers. The Galaxy S phones are all very similar with regards to hardware. The other phones fill out different price points. Every company does this.

Be nice if they just made all the galaxy S phones the same with the exception of the necessary radio chips for the respective carriers. Galaxy S would be a much more prominant brand name if that were the case. From Samsung's perpective, you think this would be the way they'd want to go, which is why I think it's the carrier input that is the primary reason for all the differences in models.
So you're upset because the Epic isn't an "icon" like an iPhone or a Droid? Because Samsung doesn't throw all their money into advertising?
I couldn't give less of a crap. I just wish they would put more effort into their software (Android updates, fixing the bugs that have plagued users since launch).

No, not necessarily, but maybe if they made all the new line of galaxy s phones have the same phone across the board(epic, fascinate, vibrant ect...). They have too many differences in phones, some have led lights, some have keyboards, some have front facing cameras ect, it would be more manageable if they only had one phone, across many carriers.
it would definitely be easier to manage. But then people would complain about not having enough choices.
I'm not gonna lie, I wish the Epic was designed a bit sexier. I hope Sprint gets that crazy thin Galaxy S II we keep seeing. I don't want a keyboard...as long as there's another way to get into download mode.
My "complaints" are about the casing though really and not at all about software. I'm kinda superficial. Hah.

You're missing the point: The variety is spread too far and wide. Thus, less recognition and thus longer wait for software updates. You have over a dozen phones with different innards than 2 or 3 phones with consistent innards. That's my argument. I mean look at the Nexus S! It's basically a Epic 4G without the keyboard!

Maybe I am on the recognition argument. I'm just not the type of person who cares if people can name off the make and model of my phone. I get compliments on it (<3 SAMOLED) as it is and even that I could live without.
As for the different innards, I refuse to believe that anything besides a different radio makes for any significant challenges in keeping the software up to date, and the radio change is unavoidable. Keep in mind just because our devs have a hard time with something doesn't mean Samsung does. They have source code for the drivers, detailed specs on the hardware, and of course actual PAID professionals.
The Galaxy S line has sold very well everywhere, and into the millions internationally. So I think Samsung isn't worried about diluting the brand. It doesn't seem to have hurt Motorola and their endless variations on the Droid, and Samsung unlike them doesn't have to pay a royalty to Lucasfilm for the name. XD

They were going to do this anyway. Whether they named all or none Galaxy S is beyond the point. Remember, they also have to sell these to the carriers and I'm sure Verizon and Sprint all want to have their brand recognized. Think of it this way.... Okay yes thats a lot of options. But it is android. People want choices right? Well they get choices. So....No. I say they should add more slower, but no its not to many options. But that is just my opinion.

Seriously though, to be fair, Verizon (thank you previous poster) did market it in a very smart way and that includes the name, so the royalties were seemingly worth it.

Agreed with what everyone said, Sprint has really changed their act with "Truly Unlimited 4G", and a really badass lineup of phones, before it was "ok" network and crappy phone selection, now I see nothing but great things for Sprint. Granted speeds are not close to the thunderbolt its T-Mobile, but on a phone I can live with my 6 - 8 mbps down and 1.5 - 2 mbps up, and even that is supposed to improve over a period of time with their big plans to improve the network and even introduce LTE. Sprint may be the underdog, but I guarantee you its going to change fast. No one has the potential Sprint does - Evo 3D, Samsung GSII, Motorola Photon, iPhone 5, LTE.

I dont see how. VZW has the Bionic coming, the LG 4G phone, they Droid X2, Incredible 2, Galaxy S2, iphone, Droid Charge, Droid 2... AT&T has the Atrix, the iphone, that new 4.5" screen phone, Aria, Inspire, Surround, Captivate, and the infuse. Is Sprint getting more competitive with their phones.. yes but beats everyone.. not hardly. Plus we dont even know what phones everyone else is coming out with in the second half of the year. Who put you on Sprint's second half phone lineup? Pretty spot on. Wrong, but spot on. SG II won't be their last high end device this year, and thinking otherwise is speculation on your part. Sprint and Apple are in talk for a distribution agreement, but that's all I know about it. I'll have to call that speculation, as well.

Verizon android phones,new htc?

So currently I have a tbolt and its on its last leg. Everytime its time for me yo upgradr it seems like its always that transition period where its a while before any great new devices. Well I need an android device now. Not to thrilled about going with a moto device even if the maxx has great battery life. Nexus just doesnt seem well built. The lg spectrum looks good spec wise. Wondering if I root it to get rid of that terrible lg sw will be ok or should I just get an improved tbolt and go with the rezound. I really want an htc one x but mo timeframe vzw will be getting. Opinions on the spectrum? Rezound? Or anyone heard when they will be getting some new top of the line devices

You cannot go wrong with the Rezound.
Best signal of any phone I've ever used.
Development is getting going quicker now since we now have S-OFF.
It's a really underrated phone as it got lost in the Nexus/Razr Maxx craze and now the newer phones.

Totally agree.. rezound is.like a lost treasure. It's easily the best phone on the market. That's what happens with ****ty advertising. Verizon got more money to push the gnex and razor.

When exactly did they push advertising for the GNex? Retailers didn't even know the phone was supposed to be released on the release day. They advertise nothing but moto. I had to go to 4 different stores to get mine because they weren't sure if they could release it. Lol, vzw for ya.

The Rezound is a solid option great form factor. I've played around with the Razr maxx and it's shortcoming is it is a little too wide. I think Verizon is waiting to decide if they will carry the new HTC One X series so your options are the Rezound or the razr maxx at the moment.

You're right! Looks like it is supposed to come out this month.
Verizon's CEO put out a press release specifying that they won't be getting any of the new HTC phones within the foreseeable future.
The Rezound has great development going on with it and is definitely a quality device. If you're getting a phone now it's what I'd recommend. VZ is going Nazi style on their Moto bootloaders so that's definitely something I wouldn't buy myself.
I would upgrate now before they take your unlimited data away.
you can`t compare , HTC - Simply the best !
