Meaning behind various COM# in Odin? - Vibrant General

Hey everyone-
I've been curious about what specifically the different COM modes mean in Odin while flashing roms onto the vibrant? I know that COM6 is generally what u wanna work when using Odin with the vibrant, but I've flashed numerous roms when Odin has shown other COM# messages. Anyways, I was just curious if anyone actually knew exactly what each one meant, just wondering? Thanks in advance.

I think that is what port you are using. Try plugging into a different usb port and it should change. Ive mever too much worried with the numbering and have never had any problems.
You should be able to turn on and off whether a certain port is set to high or low power via your computer settings, that is the only thing I can think of that would make a difference. I have also heard that the usb cord you use can make a difference. I know when I first got my phone odin was impossible and I do think that was due to the cord as it had a hard time making a connection and ended up corroding the micro usb port on my phone. After I cleaned it and switched to a cord that fit the phone better all of my problems went away. I also know someone else who got a cord like that from samsung and it had trouble connecting so he sent it back and and his new one has not had any trouble. So if you have a particular usb port you use whether its 5 or 6 etc. if its been working fine it should be ok. If your using windows it will usually tell you whether or not the usb you are using is high speed or not, which is what you want as that translates to better flashing, charging, and everything else. Sorry for my rambling, hope that helps bobofosho.

Most operations that involved firmware mockery are performed via serial connectivity, since you have a USB interface, there are OS calls made to perform USB to serial conversion - and in essence turning the USB interface into emulated serial interface COM port (communication port).
Did I bore you with details? You asked for it, I hope I answered it.

Tried all that mate, ........ At least I learned to flash from the memory card last night LOL,......... seriously though think its broke, its doing the same on 3 different computers with different leads and a flashed a new rom too
Out of curiosity is it charging through usb? I understand you get a connection error but does the status light turn red to indicate it's charging?
Hey
Not sure if this is relevant.
Im using Windows 7 and found that when I plugged my device in, the driver would fail.
If you went START => Printers and Devices, you should see a "storage device" with an exclamation mark. If you right click properties and uninstall the driver, then unplug and plug the HD back in, it picks it up and works till you next remove the device.
This happened with me constantly till I flashed my phone with another ROM, now it seems to work fine???
Hope that helps??
I have exactly your same problem; I've tried with three different computeres running or XP or Vista without any luck; hard resetting my HD several times, changed ROM but with no luck at all; USB now seems to be able only to charge my device. Searching with google I saw some others had this problem but still was unable to solve that issue.
Hope someone will provide us the INSPIRATION to make it work again!
well sounds very much like it's a hardware problem
as in the type one can only hope to fix by replacing the usb connector from the pcb
This likely won't fix your problem, but it's still worth a shot. In the PC to USB menu (different places depending on ROM), I believe the default (especially in the new roms) is set to activesync. This might not play nice with certain PCs that don't have the drivers and maybe aren't allowed to dl new ones. So try to set that to the Hard Drive/mass storage option and see if it helps (no drivers necessary then).
Good luck
thanks but already tied BUT with no luck....dead....only charge available....I even tried deactivating the charge device when connected option, the option work but not the connection......
Ive never had this problem with my HD but have had the problem with many other USB devices, usually its caused by a corrupted USB Driver Stack, and the usual way to fix it is to uninstall the driver and reinstall it, if that dosnt work i would suggest this:
1) Plug in the HD
2) Find the malfunctioning driver and unisntall it
3) Uninstall ActiveSync
4) Install Active Sync
5) Try the HD again
However, because this is happening to multiple computers have you considered the fact that your port on the HD may be dirty, use a cotton swap with an alcohol based cleaner (you can use acetone, but be careful not to touch the plastic parts of your HD it will probably eat it).

USB Problems Since Upgrade to 2.2.1

Since upgrading the Galaxy S to 2.2.1 which I absolutely love - must faster than anything previous, sleek, really well done, I've just noticed for the first time that my USB doesn't seem to work.
The computer sometimes sees it but just says the device is malfunctioning, the phone sometimes sees the PC and gives a menu for "ask on connection", but Windows just does not know what this device is at all.
Suspect I may have to reinstall the drivers fully in Windows, remove it completely and try again, if it actually showed up as an unknown device in Device Manager.
I do need to try another PC and cable just in case, but this is what Im having at the moment in Windows:
USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

Factory reset the phone, but the USB port still is not working. Charges fine, but don't connect over USB to the PC.
Can it be in debugging mode. Try to switch between mass storage and kies.

This may sound dumb, but it could be the USB port acting up (loose connection). Try wriggling the cable around or use a different port.

Right, I've tried all available USB ports, two different computers, two different OS's. The phone just does not register a USB data connection. It only recognises AC charging according to the logs.
I think I have a broken USB port on the phone as if I jam the connector in at an angle on the phone, it sometimes registers the data connection but its far too unreliable.
Development mode don't work, Kies, Mass Storage etc... anything. Nothing works.
Factory reset doesn't make it work.
I can't even flash a new ROM as the phone is not detected in download mode.
I've got the phone booked in at a Samsung Service Centre now. I've seen a few webpages referencing corrosion. I tell you what though, this phone has been protected way way more than my old N97. I've had so many phones and not one has suffered from "corrosion". So let them just try and say it's my fault. Im ready for em.

Definitely trying that first - thank you to all the people that have been doing the investigation.
It sounds to me like Samsung have got a bad batch of USB connectors that should be replaced under a factory recall.
I don't use mine in a shower, or sauna, or anything like that, I don't even use it in the rain.
The closest it gets to any humidity is being in my shirt pocket from time to time.
Im going to get some meths or something like that and some thin paper and see what I can do with that. Im just off to Homebase!
there are similar problems on the galaxy 3 series where usb suddenly stops working. the following solutions seem to work there:
1. dial *#7284# to open "PhoneUtil"
2. in USB section, switch to modem, and then switch back to PDA
if that doesn't work: reboot into recovery and select "wipe cache partition"
*hth*
I've tried both of those before I start splashing the methylated spirit around. Still no joy.
Wipe Cache don't work, as well as wipe data/format sd/restore factory defaults etc.
I think I've got a 100% hardware fault.
@OP,
I am terribly sorry about your case. Looks like you need to make that trip to the service centre.

I'm not an Expert but 2 hints from me:
1. If you have'nt tried yet: Install usb-drivers on pc new and then connect your phone and wait until drivers are installed to your phone.
One times this way worked on my i9000.
2. Look for a zipped rom on xda which you can directly download and install from sd-card.

Computer not detecting phone through USB at all!

Argh, I am pulling my hair out trying to solve this! When I connect my phone through USB to my computer my phone detects the connection but my computer doesn't respond at all! I bought the phone used and it is already rooted but is using a pretty old rom and I wanted to upgrade it. It is currently running "Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #4".
Things I have tried:
Using different USB settings on the phone (Kies, mass storage, ask on connection)
USB debugging mode
Different USB cables
Different computers
Cleaning the micro usb port on the phone
Formatting SD card
wide data/factory reset
Nothing seems to accomplish anything, it still reacts in the same way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The ROM shouldn't count.
First of all, has it ever worked? I just presume you're running on win7: did you installed the drivers as specified in several different tutorials on this forum?
What kind of connection are you trying to establish? tether, usb, kies, other? have you tried any combination possible?
I just got the phone a couple days ago, I have not managed to get it to be detected by anything yet. I have tried it on a couple Win 7 boxes and also a Vista laptop. I am currently downloading Ubuntu just to rule out the OS factor. I have just been using Kies to install drivers although after reading your post I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
I'll try that and post results if that is what you mean? I have been trying to establish basically any connection at all for the ultimate goal of getting Odin to actually detect the phone so I can flash it with ClockworkMod Recovery and then an ICS rom. The phone detects the USB cable fine and starts charging and puts the phone into whatever mode I want (kies, mass storage, etc.) but the computer has yet to give any indication that anything is connected to it.
Try with the drivers, but be also sure to enable usb debugging to be able to select a different usb sharing when inserting the cable in case you haven't already.
The drivers installation didn't make any difference and I've tried USB debugging and all 3 connection modes (Kies, mass storage and media player), none of which exhibit any response from the PC.
Edit: Posting from Ubuntu now, same exact thing. Phone detects USB connection, and it doesn't matter which of the connection options I choose as the PC doesn't give any indication that anything has been connected to it.
That's really weird. Does Odin3 (which presumably works at a lower level) sees anything if you put the phone in download mode? ) this way you should be probably able to upgrade somehow.
Sent from my galaxys using XDA App
No unfortunately there is no response from the computer or Odin3 when the phone is in download mode and connected through USB.
that's odd and maybe that's not good at all.
I'm starting to think the problem could be hardware related, especially in a situation where odin can't see the phone in download mode (i.e. no software layer is interfering).
Is there any glaring damage/scratch/missing parts on the usb port?
Sincerely, if I could return it I would try that at this point.
Unless someone else has got anything else to try.
I'll take a good look at it under a scope when I go to work on Monday I guess. Thanks for your input, I'll try to update if I find out anything else!
So I took a look at the port under a scope today and discovered that one of the pins (the middle one) in the micro usb port on the phone seems to be completely gone! Not sure what each pin does but I'm assuming that one is probably used to communicate to whatever the phone is connected to...
Luckily I have access to a parts phone that I can take apart for a replacement port so probably tomorrow I will attempt surgery on the phone! Will report back with further progress after I have done so.
Well I'm happy to report that that was definitely the problem! I replaced the micro USB port on the phone today during my lunch break, put the phone back together and plugged it into a PC here. It immediately detected the phone so I'm pretty happy! Guess I'll be trying out some ICS roms tonight when I get home!
that's great, glad you managed you fix this yourself, well done and enjoy your SGS

Cant connect samsung S1 to PC

Hi,
I'm having a real though time trying to connect my galaxy s1 to a pc. Have tried everything, like kies, direct connection, reseted the device, and no joy.

It can get pwr from the usb cable when is connected; already tried with another cable and same thing.
My final goal is to unlock it.

Hi there.
By direct connection you mean the USB Mass Storage mode, right?
It might be some weird, random problem with the samsung system drivers. I used to have such problems about two years ago, back in the days of Froyo. Have you tried re-installing them? There was a link to proper drivers file in one ICS installation tutorial, and those drivers can be downloaded here. If you go about trying this method, lemme know if it worked.
Cheers.
PS: Unlike diklooc there suggested, do not never EVER go back to x86 OS. That's the worst advice. Kapisch?
Did you check your usb port in System ?
Sometimes it stuck with another lastest device
Hi,
have tried everything, and finally only in a WinXP32 could be abble to get the error shown on the file atached.
But nothing (warnings) come up in Device Manager
Unninstalled everything (kies) and tried to install only the driver and nothing happens.
Should I try to mount it on a linux?
or is it dead?
thanks
i have this problem too
wat chan I do???
my sgs can not connect to my PC
This may help...
Hi there - I don't have the same phone as you, but I did encounter the exact same problem. I've been searching around and it looks like the most common fix was to simply replace the cable. I don't know what kind of cable you have, but my phone (a Samsung Focus i917) uses a mini-usb connector. I found that my Amazon Kindle used the same connector.
When I was using the Samsung cable, I'd get intermittent connects and charge power. The OS would report unknown device. When I switched computer's = same result. I switched to my Kindle cable and the computer instantly recognized the device and installed the drivers. After 12 hours of troubleshooting, factory resetting my phone (blah - lost everything) it turned out to be the cable. I know that this isn't an easy troubleshooting step for most people, because who has an extra cable? I just got lucky that my Kindle uses the same connector. I'm now suspecting (due to the prevalence of this connectivity problem coming from people with Samsung phones - there are a LOT of reported issues) that there is probably a Samsung cable problem in general.
Good luck with your phone.
try
try select mass strong ...

Nasdriver, I currently have a similar problem but mine is related with Samsung Kies as I can't get either my older SGS1 or my newer Samsung Nexus to get recognized by Kies. I also suspected the cable thing and even read it could be a USB port issue but neither of them was my problem (I have 3 cables and 8 ports on 2 computers that result in the same thing). I can connect other devices with the same cables and they work, so I suspect my problem is focused around the Samsung device drivers.
My advice is if you can go in a systematic manner, first focus on the cable (easiest to replace), if you get the same results with a new cable, then focus on the USB physical port, clean it with some Isopropyl alcohol, if the port works for other devices (camera, other phones, etc..) on the same cable but not with the SGS, then try reinstalling the samsung device drivers.
Oh, and if you want to unlock your phone, the EASY way is to download the Galaxy S Unlock application from the Android market (no affiliation) it's free (but the developer does accept donations) and it WORKS. I won't bore you with my 3 week journey trying to unlock my Bell SGS phone here in Canada, had I found this app first I would have done it in less then 2 min saved myself a LOT of frustration.
Good luck

Nexus 7 not recognised when connected via USB

Hi everyone,
My Nexus 7 at present isn't getting recognised when connected to a PC via USB. This was working the other week (the drivers were installed the first time I connected it via USB), but now when I connect it to a PC via USB the device isn't recognised by the PC.
I have tried this on multiple PC's and the same thing happens on all of them, so it must be something with the Nexus 7 that is causing the problem.
If I go into Device Manager on any of the PC's, with the Nexus 7 connected via USB it doesn't appear anywhere, so I can't go down the route of even updating the USB drivers as suggested for some similar issues on other threads.
I have even installed the Android SDK and installed the Windows USB driver package, but that hasn't done the trick either.
I have also tried installing the Microsoft MTP porting kit, but again this made no difference and the same can be said by switching between MTP and PTP mode and neither have made a difference. I don't have USB debugging enabled, enabling it doesn't make a difference either.
I can connect my Nexus S phone via USB without issue to any of the PC's I've tested the Nexus 7 on, which further backs my thinking of the issue being with the Nexus 7.
I'm running out of ideas, so thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone has any other suggestions before I do a factory reset on the Nexus 7.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Further to this I have done a factory reset, which has made no difference.
Any ideas other than going back to Google or Asus?
my N7 has trouble being recognized by different PCs. it is hit and miss. will your N7 charge when it's connected to a PC that doesn't recognize it? my N7 does not show the charging symbol on screen, but the battery percentage increases over time.
Also try a different cable just in case.

Try connecting it as a PTP device rather than MTP.. (that sometimes works for me when I am trying to force it to pick up the ADB device and install driver etc). If it detects it as PTP change it back (to MTP), and hopefully it will be OK.

I had already tried that, makes no difference unfortunately.
I had the same problem.
I knew it was driver issue but where to find the driver?? Looked on Asus' site and apparently the Nexus 7 is the Asus unwanted step-child. Not a mention of it there.
After a lot of looking and a lot of cursing,I found the answer! (It was the cursing that helped!) Install Windows Media Player v13. The needed driver is included. After a reboot, I was able to see the Nexus 7 on my PC and (more importantly) able to transfer files to it!
What happened
I have had the same problem with it not connecting. My n7 does charge when I plug it in but does not show up in my computer when i plug it in via usb. I have tried switching it to PTP mode but it does not find the device for what I'm doing(unlocking boot loader for my nexus 7) I hope someone can help greatly appreciated.

USB Connection To PC Not Detected
Having the same issue here. These two guys as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1851868&highlight=usb+connected Did you also use a car charger? Don't know when it happened for me, but sometime between it last working and testing car chargers it stopped working. Same thing for me as one of the posters says, USB-OTG works, so I would think it's not a physical issue, but how to reset it. Dunno, Any help would be appreciated.
ADB, Fastboot, or USB Connected device in Windows does not work. Computer doesn't even detect, no USB connect sound.
UPDATE:
Installed Glazed Jellybean v.1.1.2 thinking it might clearup the issues with detection of USB and presenting it to the PC. Still same results, USB data connectivity is missing somehow. Just might be some sort of physical damage. Kernel was updated as well to Linaro Motley Kernel v1.1.1.
Help!
I had this happen after using a car charger from amazon. I actually really believe that the charger is the problem, as I had originally got the charger for my recently departed tf101, and after using the charger on that, same problem as what's happening with my n7. Sure, there's workarounds, but it'd be nice to connect to pc for faster transfers.

Same As Above... This sucks.
I am having the exact same problems listed previously & I've tried almost all the same fix attempts with no luck. Like a couple others, mine worked out of the box, then I charged it in my car (using the Nexus 7 cable plugged in to a USB cigarette lighter adapter)... Now, nothing but the indication on the Nexus that it's charging. No indication at all that the computer is even aware a device is plugged in to it. Has anyone found anything? Please, Lord, say it's so!!
I found a fix
Whether this will work for everyone I am not sure.
I took the USB from the hub I was using & plugged it into one of the front ports on the actual tower unit. The drivers were reinstalled and everything is working again.
It may be the Nexus didn't like the hub or it may be that particular USB port threw a wobbler.

Thanks, but I've plugged my N7 in to 15+ usb ports on 3 different PCs & haven't gotten anywhere. No changes.
I did call ASUS support yesterday & was told by the tech support person that they were working on a "PC SYNC" software for the N7, but did not have a release date for it yet. I'm not very optimistic. The tech sounded like she could have been reading from a script. Didn't sound as if she knew what she was talking about. I may take my N7 back & get a replacement.

Hell, if there are several of us that have damaged devices from these chargers maybe Amazon would help us to get our Nexus replaced.

Hey, do you remember what charger you used? I tried two from Amazon, so I can't tell which one gave me the problems. Here they are:
Arcadia Rapiduo, 10W 5V/2A Dual Port high-speed USB car charger w/ Free Full Speed Micro-USB Charging Cable (IMP80C)

It was this one at first, then I complained it didn't work, and they sent one that could've come from their own car, the way it looked.
And yes, I know it says "for Asus tf101".
Perhaps there's a "safety switch" of some sort, written into the os, that "shuts down" the ability to communicate through usb after using these car chargers? That may sound stupid, i know.
I don't think it's a pc problem, since the n7 still charges when connected, and also, because this has happened twice to me, with both my tf101 and my n7,directly after using these car chargers.
And, for some reason, I don't believe it has caused hardware damage to the n7. I kind of believe what I said in the first paragraph. Maybe this will happen to a dev, and they will look into the problem.
I suppose rma is an option, but patience is not my strong point.

I have 3 computers and 2 Nexus 7 in household, and one N7 has no problem being recognized by computers and the second N7 wont connect as a MTP device at all, on any computer, with many different cable and port combos. The second N7 was bought just a few days ago and I was not going to root and leave a virgin device, so it was essential to have access to sdcard with computer as storage device. Looks like I am taking it back for replacement...which is a shame because other than usb problem the second N7 was a perfect C70...my first N7 C70 has a minor screen lift, and after comparing the two tabs side by side, a slightly more washed out display.

This was my thoughts as well, thought some of the system files were altered in someway by either that process or my installing usb related apps. USB OTG and USB monitoring apps specifically. However, I decided to try an load Glazed Jelly Bean hoping it would resolve this issue by rewriting the system files, but it was still broken. This has now changed from a connectivity issue to a totally dead unit for me, it slowly started refusing to give a full charge and now not even a response while plugged into an AC Charger.
