I'm tempted to buy one, I did just buy a TP2 though
So who's buying one?
I am going to give back my TP2 today and order one from the store. The better camera is more important to me than the keyboard. I have young kids and the TP2 camera sucks unless I can get them to stay still which isn't possible. Plus the reduced weight will be nice too. I really do like the TP2 as it is the best phone I have used however I think the Imagio will be better for my specific needs.
Update: Well now I read a review that even though it is higher MP the camera still sucks, so maybe I'll stick with my TP2 after all.
To bad your on verizon. I would say get a Touch HD2. It has flash. The 5mp camer on my diamond2 is actually loads better than that on the TP2. It all depends on lighting though. In Good light it's awesome but low light you can't tell a difference between the TP2 and TD2.
Just ordered the Imagio.
Every review I've seen or read said that the camera was tons better on the Imagio when compared with the TP2. The only thing that I don't like is that nobody seems to be working on a Leo Rom for the Imagio!!!!!!! Its killing me! Why do CDMA phones get left out when it comes to ROMS? I even offered $500 for a ROM for the Imagio and am willing to go even higher but....nothing!!!!
i got it anyway
I just ordered it anyway. While I would love to hack it basically the 6.5 ROM with unlocked GPS has everything I need so I can wait on the unlocking. I would imagine since the CDMA TP2 and Imagio have the same specs other than the keyboard/camera that the ROMs will be compatible. Now it will just be the very long wait for the hard spl.

I agree, with you there not much activity in the CDMA Topaz (Imagio) section. I'm going to post a Imagio vs. Pure thread in the Topaz General to see if it draws interest to the Imagio
I decided to skip the keyboard on the TP2 and dive into this one. I didnt use the keyboard my touch pro has as much as i thought i would. Kind of a pain to slide it open every 2 minutes.
Chalk up another one that switched from TP2 to the Imagio (goofy name for a phone). I had the TP2 since launch and I found the phone to be very good. But since I rarely used the keyboard (I hate texting) I found that the Imagio looked sexier and already has 6.5 installed (should not be a issue once the phones are unlocked). There were also problems in some apps that when you wanted to use the keyboard the app would not respond correctly causing me to kill the program and start in landscape mode. In addition I inadvertently activated the slider when pulling the TP2 out of my holster. Plus it should be easier to get a decent aluminum case which was not possible on the TP2 due to the slider design.
Verizon also made it easy for me to swap devices. I was expecting problems but the agent was like OK, which device would you like since your still within your 30 day 100% satisfaction guarantee .

I called VZ last night. They told me I would have to order the IG at full price, then wait up to 2 months for them to receive the TP2, then they would issue the credit.
How "easy" was your experience or even the process explained by the rep?
I would also have to return my TP2 to VZ, no in-store tradebacks since I bought the TP2 online.

I tried buying tp2 on release day but the online ordering was not working for me forcing me to call 611. Im guessing different procedure when buying in store vs online vs 611. If you buy in store or 611 they charge an early upgrade fee of $20 which I got waived the first time.

That's why I always order mine in a store, when I did my TP2 swap it was easy. Not trying to rub it in, just saying next time you way want to consider the store. I was in and out in 10 min.
Oh that's good to know, since the TP2 was never sold in stores.
So you basically had the store order from corporate, and picked it up locally?
Something seems fishy about what they told me, I'll have to call them again about the return/credit/onlinerebate, etc.

You can have them order it at the store even though they don't have it there they ship it to you 2-day for free or overnight for $9.
Same thing I did with Imagio, only problem is I had to give back TP2 when I ordered the Imagio, use a temp phone until I got it, which isn't that big of deal for 1 or 2 days.

My experience was real pleasant. I sent my phone back in the box it came in, supplied the tracking number and they sent out my Imagio next day air. I was also told I could take it in the store and trade it when the store received the Imagio in stock. As long as you within the 30days from original purchase.
Well I just ordered one should be here by Monday. How do we go about starting a Whitestone/Imagio section to the forum?

I hope you don't have the flutter/echo problem I did with my VZ TP2. I thought it was a fluke at first.
Is the flutter echeo a random bug or is it a problem with all phones?

There are several reports about it, but with all things internet.... try it!
Maybe it's my area and a few other areas, but I found an article on it tonight, too! Damed if I can find the link again.
Again, you can try it and you have 30 days to return (they give a return shipping label if ordered online VZ). Or apparently if you had the store order it, you can return in the store.
If you ordered online, you can NOT return to the local store. I posted the actual return line for the equipment above.
You will still need to call VZ to cancel the service on their regular cs number.

I really did like this new 3.6" screen, I'll have to play with ATT's version more when I get mine tomorrow. I don't think it'll be that much different though.
I'm pretty excited about this phone and after scouring the internet tonight, I can't find **** on new information. It looks like it was showed at the WP7 launch and that's it.
Dell's being very hush hush and that's just making me more and more impatient!
Anyway, are you buying a Venue Pro?
Yes! I have pre-ordered it on Clove. Been looking for a Micro SD card to go with the phone. I am hoping that it can take a class 4 Micro SD as I have my eye on a 32gb SD card to complement the phone.
Roll on 8th November. Hoping that it does not get pushed back but with all of these infromation leaks from Clove it is look more like a reality.
Will want to try the keyboard first. The screen is probably near perfect.
The Dell Venue Pro would have been perfect (for me) if it had:
1) HTC Locations (/ maps)
2) HTCSense.com functionality
3) Flash (as per the HTC Desire HD)

Yeah, I'm also digging the HTC Hub stuff. I bet some XDA devs will be able to port it.
Flash is on the way in Jan 2011, last I heard.
I was planning to get the Dell Nov 8. However I read it won't be available stateside on Nov 8. So I'm looking into a plan B.
Plan C might be a Desire HD. I hope it doesn't co e to that.
I switch to tmobile for it. Pre ordered from Clove but now it seems there version won't support tmobile 3G so emailed to cancel guess I will have to wait. Had picked up a g2 for now but took it back and got the Vibrant. Great phone so I am content for a moment. I like the Vibrant even more than my Captivate I had. Thought they were the same but the tmobile tweaks are great
My guess is that there's just a single model coming out, and it's intended for TMOUS.
HOWEVER, in addition to their own oddball 3G frequencies, TMOUS smartphones generally support world standard (European/Asian) ones also. This enables TMOUS customers to use the phone overseas. Recent example: TMOUS HD2.
So, except for any SIM lock issues, the TMOUS Dell Venue is probably good to go on European networks, and that a "European" Venue Pro is probably a TMOUS one in disguise.
Again, all just a guess.
yes yes and yes
im getting it if it ever gets over seas to Sweden its the perfect phone for me! though it could have been slimmer XD
I plan on getting this if I'm not totally blown away with Gingerbread and/or the new myTouch HD, whichever comes first. This looks like a joy to use. The large 4.1" AMOLED and the portrait qwerty. Looks like they read my mind. Also it WILL have expandable memory, it's similar to the Samsung where you'd hard reset it and it'll recognize the sd card. The caveat is you'll lose all your data every time you change sd cards.
Only wish it supported HSPA+ and had the newer procs. But since I'm connected via wifi more often than not, it doesn't matter much to me, tho it would be nice. As far as the older chips, it could be powered by a hamster and wheel as long as it doesn't hiccup once, I'll be more than happy.

I think it's being released late Nov. as opposed to Nov 8th.
EDIT: Anyone have past experience with Dell phones? How was the build quality / support? I've never owned anything other than HTC smart phones.

This is the first dell phone . They've had handheld devices before (pocket PC's) but the build quality and overall product was terrible (they didn't put much effort into them). This phone is a completely different direction for Dell. Build quality is superb, it's worth every penny.
And unlocked versions are expected to be available in the UK as of November 8.
Battery Life
I am really thinking bout getting this over the HD7, but some reviews were saying that it may have 3 hours of talk time?!!!! If this is at all true with an AMOLED screen, then wow. I know Dell computer batteries suck, hope they used another company for their batteries. I know it isn't out yet, but what are your guys thoughts?
As far as build quality goes, if it feels great at the sotre, then I'll def buy it. I'm mostly looking forward to the stereo speakers and 4.1 inch screen. I've always felt that 4.3 inches might be a little too big for me.

Dell computer batteries suck? Wtf have you been buying. My 3 year old Dell Latitude D630 still gets a good 6-7 hours of battery life.
No one has even received a review unit of the DVP yet, so it would be impossible for anyone to conclude that battery life is only 3 hours.
The microsoft site states that the battery life is 7 hours with 14 hours of standby time (if I am reading it correctly).

I'd disagree. I had an Axim X5 and an X50v, and I found the build quality to be fantastic. They were solidly built, hard wearing and all round well designed. Pretty much everything about them gave the impression of solidity. I still have the X50v and the only signs of it being 6 years old is a small amount of the chrome paint has come off the centre button and the battery is knackered (this would happen to any 6-year-old Li-ion battery). When I sold the X5 it had no signs of wear at all. I'm fully expecting the Venue Pro to be the same.
I really love the form factor of this phone. Having a full screen with a slideout keyboard that doesn't go to landscape mode would be perfect! Two issues:
1) The TMo data network in my area, while 3G, is pretty poor
2) Same ol' 1GHz snapdragon processor
So switch to CDMA and toss in one of those fancy dual core Snapdragons and I'll be in line on launch day

Yeah, I am liking the idea of possibly being able to QUICKLY type out a text message with just one hand. If it had a landscape keyboard, it wouldn't be easy to do that.
I have a Dell Streak - and the build quality is brilliant. Its really very very good. If the Venue Pro is anything like that then it will be excellent Im sure.
Battery life on the Streak isnt anything to shout about but its a 5" screen and I had it running some live wallpapers.
I had a play with a HD7 in my local O2 shop and now Im torn! Windows Phone 7 is slick as a bag of oiled up ferrets!

Yep.. all MS needs to do is get an update sent out with a lot of the missing features we all want/need.
Dear Sirs
I currently have the htc hd7. I still have 14 days to return to tmobile. I have thought about returning it and buy the dell venue pro. I love the keyboard on it, gorilla glass, amoled display from what I have seen on the web. I just had some questions for those that have the phone. Number one what is the sound quality on it if watching videos or playing music? What is the sound quality of the headphones? Something I do like about the htc hd7 phone it had a sound utility for the phone. You could adjust different settings for the headphones. What is the insurance like for the dell venue pro? Do they cover damage, stole phones or even a phone left somewhere? I do think it does have 512 memory it is just reporting it wrong because everywhere I have read it is faster than the htc hd7. Thank you for your answers.
1) The speaker(s) on the DVP are comparable to EVO 4G. Meaning, they're very good. I have never seen an HD7 in action, so can't make that comparison.
2) The headphones have a hissing/white noise when they're initially plugged in. I made a post on this (search hissing), and some other members confirmed that this is, in fact, the case for most phones. There are no settings that I know of for sound in general.
3) I bought insurance from SquareTrade. I think it cost me like 90 bucks. There is a $50 deductible. This is way, way better than the crap the carriers sell. I believe it covers everything you mentioned. Check their Website for details
4) Ultimately, if you have a Microsoft store near your area, call them and see if they have a device on demo. If they do, walk in and make the comparison yourself.
I am pretty happy with the device. For all the bickering that has gone on about this device, one thing's for sure... Dell will work with you (despite their long call times) to exchange the device multiple times, to ensure your happiness. It is rumored that they have an update in the works, so if you're the patient type, I'd recommend the device.

I have had both the HD7 and DVP. If you care about sound quality most, stick with the HD7. The DVP sound quality is pretty good, but it has some background noise/hissing that you can hear over quiet music, particularly if you use IEMs rather than traditional headphones. There is no app to adjust EQ on the DVP either.
Personally I kept the DVP because I don't use it for music much. The AMOLED screen and keyboard were more important to me.
There is no contest between the two as far as my own experience goes. The DVP wins hands down in all areas (except for maybe camera? which may be fixed soon), the HTC screen is passable but imo WP7 was meant to be experienced on AMOLED and up.
If possible, buy it from a Microsoft store and not from Dell. That way you get it unlocked as well.

There was some talk that the launch (11/8/2010) devices at the Microsoft store were unlocked. The vast majority of those didn't work on secure WiFi though. The replacements that we (eventually) received towards the end of December at the Microsoft Store are the same as those purchased direct from Dell and are locked to T-Mobile.
Back when Dell first officially announced the Venue Pro, they made a big deal about how they were going to use this phone internally, replacing all their employees' Blackberries. This was a very strong selling point for me. My recent experiences with other Dell products had been decidedly negative, and I was very wary giving any more money to this company for another crappy product that they refused to support. My wife's laptop developed hard drive & hibernation/sleep problems, and Dell support stonewalled the multitude of user complaints in a similar fashion as they are now doing with the DVP.
The DVP had a compelling form factor and screen, and I was intrigued. I figured if the company was committing to using it internally, then they would fix whatever problems arose. I wonder if Dell employees are having this same spate of issues, if they've had to serve as guinea pigs for firmware updates, and how many have requested their Blackberries back? Any anonymous lurkers here wishing to chime in?

Good point, I had forgotten about the employee phone issue. MS made big news for doing a similar thing for their employees....I wonder how many regret that step.
I recall the sleep/hiberation issue. I also recall that it was not isolated to Dell. Toshiba and HP had the issue on their laptops..and I assume many others did too. I don't recall seeing conversations with those companies until a fix was in place. I'm not advocating the silence part of anything....but Dell is not alone in keeping its collective mouth shut.
Does Samsung talk openly about the hardware issues on the Focus and Omnia? Does HTC talk opening about the amazing piece of crap called the surround? How about the wonderful display screen on the HD7.....
I think the difference is in how fast they respond with a fix. Samsung got many of the hardware issues tweeked in no time. I understand HTC fixed some hardware hiccups also. But so far....nothing from Dell. That is my irritant....not the keeping quiet....in the time since the problems were reported, they have released a Open market phone for Europe and India, they have released a phone for AT&T. Both with new FW. The Open market phone had a FW of 210 and has the same problem. the AT&T phone has a ROM of 209 and so far I don't see any reports of the same problem.....210 was released before 209......
I have a 8gb AT&T DVP and the problems are still there. I experience crashes and freezes. I haven't bothered sending it in after learning it takes 3-6 weeks to process the phone once they get it back. I don't think I can go that long without a phone. So, I will most likely be switching out the SD card to a 32gb and saying **** you to the dell warranty since it sucks anyways.(Covers defective phones but they are all defective)

If you're willing to swap out a card....why not try a Hard reset first....if you haven't already done so. I know its not the fix all...but sometimes it works. The 8g version was not known to have problems...so if you are seeing them....it might be something else....
Do a hard reset and see how the phone works afterwards....
Aww gotta got my apps all over again but it would be worth it if I don't have these issues anymore
How do I hard reset? Is it just that option to reset the phone?

To the original question, I seriously doubt anyone at dell and definitely no one at Microsoft is using the crap, no way these problems would have been left for so long if those employees could not use them.
They made a big fuss over the announcement but after that silence. You would think when they were actually deployed that would also be announced, methinks they used us as double beta testers (WP7 & DVP) and when the experiment failed spectacularly they shelved that project.
My brother works at Dell and he says the ARE using the DVP...I will have to ask him if anyone is complaining of issues.

Well that sure as hell explains why jack-nothing is getting done with these lemons. If they are trying to do any work on these things, they aren't getting more than 5 seconds of good hard nose grinding in, before this crap crashes.

I know several people at Microsoft with the Dell. But there are not many.
Ditto.. I have a few friends at Xbox. I think it has to do with 2 things..
1) T-mobile sucks in Seattle and Redmond (Lots of Dead zones.. even in Pikes Market area, thats my experience anyway) - This would seem to be why, as someone noted, there seem to be more Focuses (and I noticed a lot of Surrounds as well) at MS.
2) The sales approach, as the phone wasn't available at T-mo stores in the WA area. I mean really didn't Dell realize when Google with a big budget AND T-mobile behind them couldn't sell the Nexus One and closed its online store this was NOT the way to go. They even repeated Google by coming out later with an AT&T version again only available online. Why did Dell think a LESS aggressive but yet similar "online only" sales approach would work.
3) Issues with the DVP from the start..

Actually I think it was more about timing. WP shipped Oct 21 in Europe and November 8 in the USA. The first 'fixed' sells arrived on December 21. By then most MS employees not on sprint or Verizon had purchased the focus or the hd7.
Hi Guys,
I'm at the end of my contract this month, so tempted to get ahold of the Venue Pro. I've seen there are some Firmware issues, so basically I have 2 questions.
1,
Does anyone know where I can get it on a contract in the UK, havent found one yet - or where I can purchase it sim free - preferably contract
2,
How much of a deal breaker is the firmware issue? And how much does it impact the phone
Basically the phone would be perfect - portrait slider is what I need, and WP7 is the dogs.
Cheers Guys
Chris
I love mine. Like you i mainly wanted it for the portrait slider, however i only use it on long emails as the on-screen keyboard is amazing.
I was lucky i guess on issues. I cheaped out and ordered the 8gb with intentions to swap it to 32gb as soon as it arrived, which i did for not only more space but to get around the lockups.
If i had to do it all over again, I "might" have gone with the samsung focus for the better camera since I'm not using the hardware keyboard as much as i thought i would on the DVP. But all in all, i love the look of the phone and it stands out. And it does everything i need it to do.
I might not have much of a voice, but I love my DVP.
I did not experience issues that are expressed on this forum as much. I have not tampered with the registry (well you really cant...) and the only thing i did to modify it was sideload apps using my MS developer license.
Maybe it is because I apparently have the updated firmware?
The people you will find on this forum who stuck around are probably the ones to talk to. I hear domineus has had his since the beginning.

Echo Venelar's statements. I love my Dell. Its really a choice you have to make. You've read the threads. There are people that have received a Dell that just are NOT right...period...there are other people, like myself, who have had little to no problems. Whether one side or the other is in the majority, we'll never know. So, until the fixes are in place and in production, you take that risk...good one...bad one.
Again, like Venelar said, I find myself almost never using the keyboard...almost as in once or twice in 7 months....But, I could not bring myself to get the Focus. Not a Samsung fan for design...and it appeared they had hardware issues that impacted the update ability.
One of the more attractive phones in Europe was said to be the Omnia 7. Don't know if thats available in the UK, but you may want to look it up. Also, the Trophy started out slow with staining on the display, but is turning out to be quite popular. It has a good size and feel to it, though lacks the brilliant display of the focus and VP.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I currently have a HD7 - which I love to bits, but I do spend alot of time emailing / texting ,and I think with the upcoming addition of facebook chat / windows live and facebook messages that I'm going to use the phone alot more for chatting.
I guess I can see what you mean - the WP7 keyboard is really good - far better than my wm6.5 or android keyboards I've had, but as I trained as a touch typist for a previous job 5 years back, I end up typing really fast and I make far too many mistakes on the touch screen.
I've seen the Omnia 7 - that looks good. But, I'd probably prefer to keep my HD7 over it. But the Dell seems to be a better build quality than the HTC devices - from what I can gather.
Another frustration is that it doesnt appear to be in any of the UK stores - so I just cant get to try it out. I was hoping it would be on a network here, hidden away - I wonder if anyone has found anything out about it?
Thanks again for your input guys - I'll be researching heavily over the next couple of weeks the best way to acquire one of these I think
Hi
I'm based in the UK and have been using my DVP for over 2 months.
1) Haven't seen the phone available directly from carriers yet. I bought mine sim-free from Dell - there are also third parties (e.g. ebuyer.com) selling it significantly cheaper. One thing to be aware of is that many third parties appear to sell the 8GB version whereas Dell sells the 16GB version. You can add a higher-capacity SD card - however, as mentioned above it voids your warranty.
There also seem to be a few websites selling the DVP with a contract, presumably a deal they have put together themselves. If you google 'dell venue pro contract uk', you'll find several. I don't have experience of these sites personally.
2) For my device, the firmware issue basically means that I keep wifi switched off, except for short bursts. With wifi on, the phone becomes unstable. However, with wifi off, I have been using the phone for a couple of months without any crashes or reboots - it has been very stable. Generally, the only time I switch on wifi is to get marketplace updates. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
Personally, I use the hardware keyboard extensively, which was one of my main reasons for choosing the DVP. I find it very comfortable. It doesn't have any cursor keys but that's probably not possible in a portrait keyboard.
Overall, I am happy with my choice of the DVP - it's a very nice device. I wanted a phone with a hardware keyboard, good screen, decent storage capacity and WP7 - the DVP is a perfect fit.
From my perspective, the most positive sign recently is that Dell have finally started communicating re: DVP issues. Much more optimistic now that they are serious about resolving the issues.

Sadly you can only get it from dell. I waited a good bit before ordering my nexus one because of the same thing. I had never purchased a phone without the chance to hold it. I bit the bullet and ordered the nexus one when they announced stock was getting low and it worked out. I couldn't have been happier with that phone. I guess having that experience go well didn't hold me back from getting the online-only DVP.
And yes, the build quality is amazing. Yeah the phone is heavy, but if you've always used phones with hardware keyboards then it's something that you are used to dealing with. The phone is stout, I love it.
