If you flash a deodexed ROM, you will get OTA updates but willl not be able to install them as they are odexed.
Deodexed means the framework is tweaked for theming purposes and other customization. IMO, its the the way to go if you're rooted.
This is my choice of rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184
Very close to stock but with enough goodies to appease me. Also the the Dev is super active and puts out rooted builds of OTAs within hours.
To update the Clockwork recovery, simply use ROM manager.
+1 for geo411m rom!

I've been trying to figure this out on my own but keep coming up short. I want to root so that I can play around more with my phone, and use some of the apps and tweeks xdaer's are working on, but am not ready to flash a new ROM yet. I've been reading up on how to root, but it seems like any way I've found has me changing the recovery image, and or ROM. Can I root and still stay mostly stock, so that until I decide to flash a new ROM I still get OEM updates?
It's possible to root your N1 withouht flashing a custom ROM/recovery and as long as you keep your recovery stock you should still receive OTA updates.
You should consider flashing a custom ROM though; You'll get great new features that your stock phone wouldn't have (such as wired tethering or using all your ram instead of half) PLUS OTA updates since the devs usually patch them into their roms after google releases them officially
Exactly. OTAs take a week or so for everyone to get them. Why wait for this? Just get a custom rom which will have it built in the day it comes out (if not before hand).
Also I'm pretty sure there will be a manual way to force the update like there was last time.
That's a good point too ^
When an OTA update is released they get sent out to phones throughout the week, not all at once.
So when this happens a dev will usually get their hands on it and patch it into their roms, that way you can have it asap instead of waiting till you get your notification
So where can I find the best way to get this done. I've found a few ways to root it seems, and all are a little different. and they seem to have different software being used to get the same result.

Thats how i did it. It was pretty easy.
whenever the custom rom is updated u have to flash again right? so u lose all ur customization (not the stuff u can backup) every time.. isn't that frustrating?

Titanium Backup can save settings as well as apps. Just do the Batch option that basically backs up EVERYTHING. I'm pretty sure that's what you're worrying about.
Just made the jump yesterday. Worth it so far. Seems way faster and smoother in every way. Latest radio update, ROM, and overclocked-undervolted kernel. Worth a litlle time to recustomize.
I just wanted to ask and see if anyone knows. Most the custom roms I end up having issues with apps I run, but they worked fine on stock. So I wanted to go back but keep my root access.
Did you back up your stock ROM?
If you did not, I think someone has the stock kernel as link to one to the threads in the DEV section.ts installed...
Edit 01: I am almost sure, you will lose root when a new OTA gets installed...
1. Back to stock
2. "Pure root" (stock Android with root)

Yes. Easy to re-root though, at least thus far.
Rooted roms renove ota usually, like Prime.
Ok i keep getting nagged to update my g2 I am permrooted using the no adb gfree method. So i have s-off supercid and all that. I want to manually flash a pre-rooted GB rom but I'm hoping for a stock rom with minimal changes. The one exception is I want to be able to overclock, I've been looking everywhere but there are too many options without the specific changes and builds outlined. Just a little confused and looking for advice on a rom that will fit what I'm looking for. I'm happy with the stock feel just want to overclock basically. Any ideas?
BOO! no one has any recommendations?
Xboarder56's stock 2.3 + enhancements can be overclocked and is pretty much just stock AOSP.
cyanogenmod7
Sorry I'm new to some of this lol, but its that off the new ota build? Also does it make a difference? I have a stock rooted rom dvds it works great but I want the option of over clocking just because I can't help myself plus its awesome. I have pretty much every thing I own overclocked lol. free power is epic
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Also any advice on a radio for stock roms?

CM7 and xboarder56's are both based on AOSP 2.3.5, the latest android release. There's no need for them to be based off of the OTA build because they've been compiled from AOSP source (and been around before the OTA was even a thought). For this reason we've had things like CM7 2.3 ROMs since January on the G2. Nearly every ROM in the dev section will have custom kernels that allow overclocking, though (except the bone stock pre-rooted OTA Builds, they're pretty much stuck atm).

Find the radio thread in the dev section. I recommend flashing the radio intended for the T-mobile 2.3 OTA.
is that radio Vision_Radio_12.52. 60.25_26.08.04.30 ? Also, I flashed the bone stock pre rooted. My thing was I wanted to keep the stock look for now. Just to keep it simple, plus I like it. I will probably flash virtuous when they come out with a new update.

Yes thats the T-Mo US OTA radio.
ROMs like CM7 and other AOSP ones are very close to stock. The G2 ships (and OTAs) with an almost stock ROM, so anything built from AOSP will be very similar.
Something like CM7 will be much quicker and efficient with tons of extra improvements, but look very similar.
Hello all, new Galaxy user here.....I came from 3D HTC. ok my questions...
1. I am already rooted, what back up , ROM and other stuff do I need to use. There are so many links to so many choices.
2. Which are the easiest to use? I'm not good with complicated options.

First off, you don't NEED to use anything but what you have right? If for some reason you are not happy with what your phone comes with than it is all personal preference. I use TWRP for custom recovery/backups and is very easy to install via GooManager app. No flashing required, all touch based, and designed very friendly I think. As for roms, kernels, etc. they all pretty much install the same and will give different results. If you don't want to complicate things just stick with rooted stock unless it does not do something you need.

The question to start with is, "What do you want your phone to do"?
Look at the capabilities of your phone with the stock ROM:
Are you happy with the way it works? (or can you make it work the way you want by changing the available options)? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with some application? Can you download an app that fixes this? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the UI? Try out another launcher - if that works for you, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? Can you disable that bloatware? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? If you can't disable that bloatware? If so, you need to root - and then, you can freeze or remove the bloat app
Do you just want to backup everything? If so, you may not need root to use titanium backup - see if Helium backup (by CWM) does the trick for you
Do you want to change everything about your ROM, or flash a new kernel to get better battery life, or get some feature that is not available on the stock ROM (but is available on a custom ROM)? Then, root, install custom recovery (like twrp or CWM), take nandroid backup, and then flash new ROM
To summarize, what do you want your phone to do?

For the moment, the stock ROM has the most current updates. (but I'm pretty sure the carriers will delay the release of the next update, so at that time, flashing a custom ROM may be the way to go)
WiFi Tether - you don't necessarily have to flash a custom ROM just for that - you can get that just by updating the services.* files (see the hotspot mod thread in the Android development forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950)
Best signal - you will get that based on the radios that are being used, and I believe the custom ROMs use the radios from Sprint as well.
Best battery - for that, you will need to pick a good kernel, so a custom ROM will probably be your best bet.
Hope that helps!

Glad this info was helpful
Just remember to do a Nandroid backup before you flash any custom ROMs or make any changes to the kernel or the root folders.
Personally, I use the latest touch based version of TWRP (installed using goomanager in the play store) - but CWM works fine too.
Being able to revert back to the nandroid backup has saved my rear end more than once
I'm not sure if this has been asked...
Can I install the OTA when it is available for me? I am rooted, but I still have the stock recovery.
If not, then how will I get the stock KitKat? I don't want CM11 on my g2 as I'll lose all the LG features wont I??

In the KitKat Posts (at least the Tmobile ones) it sounds like the OTA doesn't have any issues flashing over a rooted but stock (with stock recovery, like you mention) ROM.
If it doesn't work, you'll probably either need to unroot and go complete stock or install a custom recovery and a ROM. There is often at least one thread that will have a ROM that is pretty much or completely stock and you could use that one.
I don't have an answer for you about CM11. You may lose knock on, but there are apps for knock off. Other LG or vendor apps probably wouldn't be on it, but there are often apps to do whatever the stock apps do, or the stock apps are available somehow.

Thanks for the info, I just read everywhere where they say that they were bricked because of the OTA with root, but they all had CWM or TWRP
