Can someone explain how is the vibrant screen better or crisper if they are both 480x800 and the G2 being a .3 inches smaller has many more pixels per inches then the vibrant with results in better resolution
So the question is why is the vibrant screen suposely crisper than the G2???
To be honest I seen both and the G2 looks crisper than the vibrant but just want to know how does the vibrant has a better screen like so many people say
I think it's because samsung has a super AMOLED screen while the G2 has a SLCD screen? I'm not 100% sure about the G2's screen type though.
Vibrants are SAMOLED, so the colors are deeper, brighter, and 'over saturated.' But, it can look a little funky since each pixel is 3 seperate entities (red, green, blue).
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/spot-the-difference-htc-desires-slcd-versus-amoled/
Better to compare in person with the phones next to each other though.
I've had both, and I will tell you that the g2s screen is definitely crisper because of the pen-tile arrangement (rg-bg separate pixels instead of rgb all in one pixel) in the vibrant, but it has very "vibrant" (no pun intended) colors and absolute blacks, and it looks great. Depends on if u prefer sharper text and a decent screen or better colors and blacks
I must say that when I was buying my G2 at radioshack they had a vibrant sitting on the table playing a video and the first thing I thought when I looked at it was: NOO WTF ITS DIAGONAL XD. SCREENS SHOULDN'T LOOK LIKE THAT.
It was actually hurting my eyes looking at it. Also the oranges in the video looked like red. They also almost looked like they were bleeding. I also noticed that the video was stuttering a lot lol.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
I knew it the G2 does have crisper screen. I did notice that when I was playing with the at&t galxy phone and the screen was not better than the G2 the colors are way too bright and oversaturated and the screen was less sharper of course since G2 has many more pixels per inches. But the sharpest screen up to date I've seen is the sidekick lx 09 tho. I had the phone and was 480x800 on a 3.2 display meaning it had many more pixels per inches then the iphone and the G2. However colors weren't that great on the sidekick but it was a very crisp screen to bad it is so small.

I saw that website and I just confirm my though once again. I don't like samoled display colors tho they are too bright the slcd looks more realistic, like the samoled looks like a tv with too much color on.

The one thing I wish the EVO had going for it is an AMOLED screen. I'm coming from a Nexus one with said screen, and it's gorgeous. Almost useless in direct sunlight, but gorgeous. Now their was an early Sprint ?Coming Soon site claiming the phone had an AMOLED screen http://www.androidguys.com/2010/03/28/sprints-htc-evo-4git-sizzles/ ---but this was prob an error. My question is: is their a huge, noticeable, difference in the two types of screens? EVO owners, give me your opinions!

Just had a live evo in my hands, and the screen is a beaut. I wouldnt worry about it not being AMOLED at all.
The screen is really a great screen.
I really don't notice much of a difference in colors / contrast / etc when compared to the ZuneHD, maybe it's the higher resolution / size that makes it look just as good.
meh, on the whole, AMOLED is all hype no show
AMOLED is trash I have a Nexus and an Evo and in direct sunlight my EVO is noticeable, AMOLED drains battery, LCD saves, colors are sharper but not brighter on AMOLED, brightness all the way up they both match up but the nexus(AMOLED) has a sharper scene
all in all not a big differ and Evo screen (IMO) has a better screen
1- colors are the same but sharper in AMOLED
2- direct sunlight LCD wins
3- colors are both bright
4- LCD battery saver
just a few details!
I thought that the amoled was more efficient.. so better than lcd

Phone Scoop comparesEvo screen to Nexus One Amoled

Screen
The screen on the HTC Evo 4G was, at times, a bit disappointing. Under medium indoor light, the screen is crisp and clear. Text looks sharp and legible and the dark, contrasty interface looks polished. Outside, the Evo 4G couldn't hold up to bright daylight. This made it tough to use for normal email and calling tasks, and nearly impossible to use the camera, since you have to tap an onscreen button to take a shot. In almost every way, the screen fared better than the AMOLED display on the smaller Nexus One. It was a bit brighter with warmer colors and much better outdoor performance. But it could still stand some improvement.

Incorrect, AMOLED has no back light and consumes roughly the same power that a TFT LCD uses just on the TFT portion of the screen. The TFT Portion of a Active Matrix OLED screen controls light on a PerPixel basis, illuminating each OLED pixel at whatever color is required vs LCD where the current is constantly on(except in a pure 0 0 0 black pixel) and controlling the Liquid Crystal portion rotating the LC to whatever degree to allow the backlight(A large % of the consumption) to shine through at a given color. And because of AMOLEDs aforementioned lack of back light it uses significantly less power.
I'm also confused as to what you mean by "color sharpness" Are you talking about the actual edge sharpness of an image or the color reproduction.
In which case the color reproduction on a AMOLED is more SATURATED not specifically more accurate, though the increased saturation makes the image appear better on average because most people enjoy over saturated images. The contrast ratio, which is the ratio of black to white, e.g. when a TV says it has a 3,500:1 contrast ratio then the luminance of a pure white pixel 255,255,255 is 3,500 times higher than that of a pure black 0,0,0 pixel. AMOLED displayes typically have a much higher contrast ratio due to the lack of a back light and the fact they can produce much "deeper" black pixels.
AMOLED actually bugs me, not only are they useless in direct sunlight(which I find myself under quite often) but it feels like colors are often OVER saturated, like the reds and oranges on my friend's Incredible look awful while I've never had that with my Hero, some colors on mine might be washed out but I'd rather have that than have a giant hodgepodge of colors on an AMOLED.
Another thing to consider is AMOLEDs "burn in". That means that pixels that do not change on the screen for a long time tend to burn in and show permanent shadows. This happens on the status bar a lot since it is nearly always displayed and unchanging.
Here is a thread of NexusOne owners documenting it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673513
As of last week I just switch over from At&t to Sprint wireless. I had two lines on my contract, wifey with the Samsung Moment and myself with the HTC Hero just to hold me off until the Evo release.
From what I thought isn't the Samsung Moment screen also uses the Amoled technology and the Hero is LCD?
Side by side comparison from low brightness to 100 percent, the Hero display looks so much better quality wise compare to the Moment. Hero seem more saturated and crisp whereas the Moment IMO seem much more dulled. Especially in the setting menu with the black background, the Moment is kind of like greenish black whereas the Hero is spot on black. Outside I'm having a very difficulty time navigating around Moment (brightness all the way up) whereas the Hero is still manageable.
By any mean I'm no expert in this display stuff but this is just my own little comparison of what I've seen between the two display.
Anyone know if the Evo screen is transreflective? A related question would be, is it even possible for AMOLED to be transreflective?
I compared my Evo screen with my old Hero screen and the Hero was a little brighter and with darker blacks. Even between LCDs there are differences.
I saw iphone4 screen and is beautiful but i dun think x10 is half that bad.
So what you guys think about our screen =) i sure it look great but is it not as good as iphone4 and why?
O ya i saw sgs screen is bright but i think is not as sharp as our=)
I like the iPhone screen, but would take a 4" screen with a couple less pixels over a 3.5" screen with more pixels. I haven't seen the SGS screen yet, but have heard that colours seem fake on it.

The iphone 4 screen is super amoled...same as sgs....therefore they will be more crisp than our x10. Plus right now the x10 is only displaying 65000 + colors....when we get 2.1 we will get bumped to 16 million colors which will give us a very nice display. Id still take my x10 over iphone4 and sgs...even without 16 million color display.

Right on...thanks for the info. I was thinking it was super amoled for whatever reason. Not an iphone/apple fan, so I don't really pay much attention to what they have....couldn't really care to be honest either lol.
It will be interesting to see what the X10 can do when we get 16 millions colors.
iPhone 4: IPS panel, superior color accuracy to other types, best viewing angles. The 4's display, as we all know, has the highest resolution (too high for my tastes) and true 16-bit color, around 1000:1 static contrast ratio (excellent).
X10: TN panel (most likely), at best 16.2 million dithered colors, decent viewing angles, decent contrast (nowhere near the iPhone 4).
Samsung Galaxy S: Pentile SAMOLED. Pentile is an awful technology that pretty much ruins most of the good in SAMOLED. The Galaxy S has outstanding contrast (50,000:1), insane blacks (as good as high end plasma TVs), and remarkable viewing angles (slightly better than the iPhone 4), but Pentile makes reading small text a headache for some. I kept seeing a slight "screen-door" effect with normal sized text too. Read up on the color inaccuracy of Pentile displays, and why the Galaxy S is not a TRUE 480x800 resolution phone.
Overall, in my view, the Droid/Droid X (haven't seen it in person though) and iPhone 4 have the best display with the LEAST compromises. The Galaxy S' blacks are sick though --too bad black isn't a color!
I have both an sgs and an x10. And the sgs display is way ahead of the x10.
The contrast makes a crap load of difference and the extra colours are very distinct. I have to stick to greyish wallpapers so i dont get colour bands on the x10.
Haven't seen the iphone 4 not available yet in south Africa.
Looking forward to seeing the x10 in 16m though. Should be interesting to compare

I have had both and I would agree that the Captivate is better when viewing photos or video. When viewing text though, I disagree. I much prefer the X10 for text (email, sms, web browsing, etc.).
I played with a Vibrant today at a Bell store what i noticed was that the blacks are indeed very good, the thing is though that the whites suck they are kind of blue not really white, in matter of fact there is quite a bit blueish tint going on.. The colors are very colorful lol but not real at all they are way oversaturated if thats the word. Also i can see the pixels from a mile away lol. Anyway the screen is nice to look at but its unrealistic and is bad for reading any kind of text wich i do quite a bit more than watching videos. Also the X10 screen looks bigger because the Vibrant's screen is a little wider and i dont really like that. My overall thought on the Vibrant is that it felt kind of cheap in my hand and also ugly. If it wasnt for the screen that pops out at you i doubt anyone wouldve paid attention to this phone even with the hummingbird cpu and the 512ram.
i have the choice between the 2 different versions of incredibles. i have read some reports of possible battery life saved with the slcd, but i have also read where that information is false. i have read that colors are better on one than the other, but still not sure which one. i have read a lot, but still dont understand.
which one would you recommend to a new dinc owner? and why?

If you'r on the east coast get hte SLCD and I"ll give you my AMOLED Mines in mint condition and has a Zagg on it.
It depends on how you want to use your phone.
AMOLED:
[+] Amazing colors, amazing viewing angles, superior power management overall with BLACK being the natural color (meaning little battery drain when displaying black, which are PURE blacks btw)
[-] Poor text rendering when zoomed out due to the pentile matrix pixel arrangement, not as sharp as LCD, consumes 3x more power when displaying WHITE pixels, pinkish hue when low brightness and blueish hue when max brightness, some users have burn-in issues.
SLCD:
[+] Accurate color representation, sharper than AMOLED and has normal text reproduction. Superior power management only when displaying WHITE (natural color).
[-] Worse power management overall especially when displaying black (which isn't nearly as dark), warmer color hue, worse viewing angles
I browse the web a lot. The web is composed of mostly white background with black text. For my purposes SLCD would be superior. Hope this helps!

As far as I'm aware the Droid X doesn't have a SLCD display. It has one very similar to the EVO which is a normal TFT LCD panel (Sony's would be Super-TFT, aka IPS panel similar to what's used on the iPhone 4).
The colors are quite great though on AMOLED I'll give you that. The biggest inconvenience is needing to zoom in when you read web pages, but that's not too big of a deal.
I did, however, forget to mention that AMOLED screens can have burn-in issues

i dont know if it works on amoled screens but it did work on my psp
when i had a burnt in image on my psp i found a white picture and plugged in my psp with full brightness and left it on overnight
got rid of it too although thats not recomended
I wish my incredible had an slcd, I'll take the sharper image and text rendering over the saturated color and supposed battery savings of the amoled. The screen on by d1 is noticeably sharper than my incredible. If they wouldn't have used the pentile matrix it would be all good.
It really is a simple decision.
Text (static picture) then slcd.
Movie (motion picture) then amoled.
If you do both....then...ah...well,...OK...maybe it's not really that simple.
On a side note:
To this day, I have not been able to enjoy a full length movie on an lcd, doesn't matter if it 60HZ or 240HZ. I can't keep my eyes off the blemishes (pixelations on fast frame-dark scenes). Just like the darn captions, you can't get your eyes off of them. Most people say they don't see the blemishes. I on the other hand, can't keep my eyes off of them (the blemishes that is).

That was probably image persistance, not burn in. LCDS are very resistant to it though. I love the White notification bar of Vanilla android but using the AMOLED with the white notifcation bar would be reproducing the problems the Nexus one had.
If theres a way to get a brand new, SLCD Dinc and not a refurb I'd stock my phone and make the switch D

i totally agree. i had the evo since it was released and just got the dinc. i choose the amoled screen and couldn't be happier. amazing difference.
My Amoled screen is great! Text is perfect on it and colors are very deep and vibrant. I compared it to my buddies iPhone 4th gen and he now wants and Amoled The screen on the iPhone is very good but the Amoled is just better.
i've had both and i DEFINITELY like the slcd. the amoled turns all blacks purple on the lowest brightness (slcd doesnt, its perfect) and the slcd is way easier to see in sunlight (half brightness on the slcd in direct sunlight is easier to see than full brightness with the amoled).
i wish i still had my slcd screen
Quick question about the screen of the G2 / Desire S compared to the super amoled of the Galaxy S? I have the I9000 and I pretty amazed of the quality of the blacks... How is it with the G2's super LCD?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Looks better then AMOLED on my nexus IMO. Very clear and bright and not too bad in direct sunlight. I Haven't really played with the S-AMOLED because I hate Samsung phones.
The colors of the vibrant to me were more....well...vibrant I guess, especially the blacks which were really deep.
The G2 has a superb screen, very bright and cheerful. I like it.
Well the insanely deep black levels on the vibrant are because of properties of the SAMOLED. Black pixels are actually shut off on that screen. The G2 has a regular old (super) TFT-LCD. It has a higher pixel density than the vibrant since both have the same resolution but the G2 screen is lightly smaller. It has a very slight yellowish tint to it, but you only really notice it if you compare it against a more white screen, like say, my G1. Other then that it's a great screen and it's very readable in sunlight IMO.
That would explain why the clash between colors on the vibrant was more pronounced.
Also, choice of wallpaper on the phone tends to help too.

I prefer the G2's screen to any AMOLED screen I've yet seen. The colors look far more natural than the garish colors of the AMOLED. Having said that, the blacks on the G2 are a very, very dark blue like on any LCD, but that's only noticeable if you're watching a movie or playing a game in the dark. In normal light or even dim light the blacks will be black.
The Nexus One had awesome contrast and looked great indoors. It makes you wish for big AMOLED TV sitting in your living room, but the N1's screen wasn't that great in the sun. The G2 is readable in full sunlight. To me, this feature is more important.
Yes I agree with the previous post about the pixel density. You can easily see the individual pixels on galaxy phones. It makes text look not so sharp. Also many of the galaxy s led screen Ive seen(work at a wal-mart cellphone kiosk) are tinted blue. White is always a light blue.
I prefer the G2 screen in the end.
super amoled on my vibrant looks way better than the g2 both in doors and out. No comparison. I also thing my g2 screen looks way better than my nexus one screen too. Both in doors and out. I personally don't like how over saturated colors look on the n1. Outdoors the g2 bests the n1 by a long shot.
I keep hearing everyone go on about Pentile is crap, etc. Then I hear that all AMOLED screens use Pentile Matrix rendering (Galaxy S, Nexus, etc). Also the pentile tech is also made by Samsung from my understanding. So why does everyone consider our Pentile TFT qHD Res 24-bit color screen crap on these fourms (other forums now too)? Especially when EVERY review I have seen online about our screens have gotten nothing but good ratings, and say it is almost as good as the iphone 4 IPS LCD screen (minus the pixel density 920x540 4" vs 920x640 3.5"). I think it is crap we have the highest res screen android phone ever and we are not getting atleast some credit.
Not really sure if there is a question in there. But Anandtech does a good explanation of the Pentile display including the pros and cons:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/4
In the end the decision is an objective one. Some people don't notice the difference and some people can't stop noticing the difference.
I am sure there will be numerous posts after mine complaining about the pentile display. But the only thing that matters is how the screen looks to you. Beyond that it is only a philosophical argument.

Because people (Especially with phones for some reason) like to hop on bandwagons and have no idea what they're talking about.
Personally love the diplay on the Atrix but human nature requires some to nitpick. Prospective buyers should inform themselves of the display tech, but also that it is an excellent display that will only get a small but vocal minority bent.

I agree with you completely.
The Atrix 4G, with the Pentile screen, is still considerably higher in perceivable resolution than 800x480. And that's just my opinion.
I won't deny the Galaxy S have really nice colors, but they are oversaturdated.
The extra resolution in a practical sense has been more useful to me in web browsing and other activities than the LSD colors of my Captivate.
As someone poinedt out, it's a personal preference. I have a friend that would rather wait for Super AMOLED Plus but I find the Atrix to be an excellent phone and an improvement in all categories despite some legitimate complaints about upload speed that is the fault of AT&T.

SAMOLED is pentile RGBG
Atrix is pentile RGBW
so the subpixels in the atrix are white...
I don't know the entire technicalities but I know that is the DIFFERENCE...
I love The screen. doesn't bother me a bit. I like CRISP over SATURATED, although I'm not knocking the SAMOLED screens either, as they are nice in their own right.

Ya I found a little bit more about that....
"PenTile RGBW technology adds a white subpixel to the traditional red, blue, and green subpixels in a color display allowing a brighter display using less power. ... When the image is mostly desaturated colors, those near white or grey, the backlight brightness is significantly reduced, often to less than 50% peak, while the Liquid Crystal Display levels are increased to compensate. When the image has very bright saturated colors, the backlight brightness is maintained at higher levels. Since most natural images and black on white text have few simultaneously bright and saturated colors, the average power of the PenTile RGBW panel is 50% less than a conventional RGB LCD. Since the LCD backlight is the major power using component on many portable devices ... products that use the PenTile RGBW panel have appreciably longer battery life. The PenTile RGBW also has an optional high brightness mode that doubles the brightness of the desaturated color image areas, such as black&white text, for improved outdoor view-ability. "
To me it sounds instead of just RGB of tradition LCD screens we have a white subpixel also. Which increases brightness at half the power.
Man I swear these fanboys acting like we were getting some inferior screen when all along it was an UPRGADE
Plus Moto should of put some marketing scheme on it's name like. SUPER TFT LCD SCREEN QHD 24-BIT EXTREME. Then all of the fanboys would of went NUTS for it.
the simple solution is to try the phone out and see whether it meets your needs or not. at least that's how I see the 30 day love it or leave it trial period. let your own eyes be the judge, and then decide which pros and cons you can happily live with. The Atrix is a wonderful device, and I believe it will only get better with time. it was simply overkill for me, and at the ripe old age of 43 the bigger screen on the Inpire is easier to read lol.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I don't know or care about the technical aspects of pentile displays, but I do know what my eyes see. If I zoom in on a 5 or 6 megapixel photo with my Samsung Captivate, the photo pixelates badly. If I do the same thing with my Atrix the photo stays sharp and clear. The Iphone 4 I returned TWICE, kept the same sharpness and clarity.
The auto settings on the Atrix and the HTC Inspire are terrible, take your camera off of automatic and it will take better pics.

thanks cause of this i changed my wallpaper to completely white background ill see if it improves battery life
When the galaxy s came out, the deal breaker for me was the screen.
Before I knew what a pentile matrix was I noticed it without trying, and it bugs me a lot.
I have been using mine for a few days now and love the clarity of the screen. The only problem for me is that when reading on it for extended times, such as using xda, I start to develop headaches? Really odd and I thought it would just be a short adjustment but after three straight evenings I am beginning to wonder.
I wondered the exact same thing OP. I'm in the market for an atrix and I've been trolling the forums for a while to get a feel of user feedback.
It really seems like people are complaining about the pentile display on the atrix but all current SAMOLEDS have the exact same problem.
The pentile matrix is only fixed on the new SAMOLED plus on the SG2 , so until then I'm not sure why people keep knocking the pentile display on the atrix when comparing it to other current gen phones like the Nexus S and captivate.
Just my 2 cents
I find the screen on the Atrix to be very crisp and clear. Can I see a pixel or two? Honestly I dunno because I don't search for pixels on a phone screen. Gaming and text are both excellent.
I find that people complain too much. They also will read somewhere that "pentile sucks" so they start saying "fail, Pentile sucks". There would be much less drama on forums and blogs if people would just try a product and form their own opinions instead just blindly following a reviewer or commenter.

Besides, the SGS2 screen dominates the Atrix screen.

With a 4.3" SAMOLED Plus display.... expect battery life close to 1-hr of 3G web browsing.

To say nothing of the fact that the GPS won't work and you'll never see updates
