from the apps screen i went into remove apps/manage applications and then running apps .I was amazed at what it said was running , stuff i had not used for days, did a restart and checked again and there's still loads running like stocks that i never use or htc news must be about 40 things running, this must contribute to poor battery performance how are others stopping them running?

Go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Running Services and just click on them and stop them?
You can disable News & Stock through Menu > Settings > Accounts and Sync and then disable them there.
I noticed with my previous DHD the battery life was pretty poor, so went to Running Services to see if any useless process was still running. Indeed, some sudoku process was running for 5 days which prevented the phone from going into Sleep mode. Going to Menu > Settings > About phone > Battery, Awake time was almost 50% of Up time!
My running services currently are:
HTC Sync
Network Monitor
CSPeopleSyncService
Calendar
Google Services Framework (2 processes)
HTC Sense (2 processes)
Maps
Mail (2 processes)
Swype

thanks for the reply i can force stop but they seem to be there again after a restart how can yo stop this , my syncs are all off yet news still appears as running?
don't worry about it. Android manages this for you.
Just because it is a running process, doesn't mean it is using processor or battery. Killing this processes will use more battery as it will just automatically restart.

For instance, right now in Settings > Applications > Running Services > my phone shows all the apps with nothing listed where it normally shows the individual memory usage, though it still shows the time the app has been running.
Then on the bottom it shows:
Avail: 84MB in 0.00B in 38 / Other: 0.00B in 4
Though there is no other indication and the phone still runs perfectly, something is causing Running Services to have issues showing the running apps memory usage, it seems.
If I reboot, it will be correct for a while. I have not been able to determine which app/widget/process is causing this. I don't feel like uninstalling everything, since nothing seems to be affected by this. I'm hoping someone may already know, or has the same issue as me and we can compare.
I'm using More Icons, Better Cuts, Weather Widget w/Forecast add-on, Pure Music widget, News & Weather (GenieWidget.apk), and Battery Widget. That's all for 3rd party stuff that's running or on my home screens.

I have same issue and the only thing we're both running is GenieWidget...did you try removing that and rebooting to see if it fixes it?
I believe this problem is Incredilbe wide. It is just that most people haven't noticed.
The first time you go to Running Services it is correct. It is only incorrect once you go there and back out of it, and then go there again. If you do this without rebooting, then the memory info will be blank/0.00B. Reboot and it is back to normal.
EDIT: and, yes, I've removed GenieWidget News app and the bug is still there.

Have you tried not running Advanced Task Killer??? I'm running on f/w R2BA020 with no task killer and no startup auditor etc... and after a day of average use I down to about 40% after c.15 hours... I tried ATK and various others and in the end ditched them cos they were making the battery slightly worse, and making the phone slower cos it had to keep restarting app/ background processes that it uses..
Your power consumption will very much depend on what your running etc.. do you have any widgets that are updating regularly, or possibly faulty and preventing your phone from sleeping.. try using juice plotter for a while to see what your discharge profile looks like - you should see it going almost flat when you have a period of non use..
PS.. I've had bluetooth on (but not connected), wifi on, and 3G/ GPRS on all day today and after 11 hours I'm now on 52%.. have used the phone a reasonable amount.. maybe 20 texts, email syncing hourly, contacts and calendar on auto sync with google... no widgets on my home screen which sync, and no use of timescape.. used mediascape for about 30 mins, internet for about 20 mins, XDA app for about an hour.. played games for about 30 mins too..
I'm using Task Manager.
It pushed me up to 46hrs Standby, coming from 20hrs, when the battery is fully charged.
Thanks Guys
@McKebapp - It is good thread but need add info like one of the guys sugesting, which are ok to kill and Do NOT Kill
@ im_iceman - The problem is if you don't have ATK or other Task Manager, most application keep running once you clicked on them. I was looking Battery Use, this tell me its and Display and Standby but detail which program was using during standby
Hi - Yes some apps will sit in the background, but they should be sleeping and not actually doing anything, unless they've been badly written.. Android, based on Linux, manages the memory so that it's running on almost full most of the time and therefore is quicker to resume something which you were previously running, or is stored in memory awaiting use.. killing these things will mean that the processor has to work harder reloading them into memory all the time..
@Mckebapp - That may well be because it's killing a dodgy app that you've got running which isn't/ wasn't sleeping properly.. trouble is it may well be killing other stuff you need too..
Each to their own though..

The absolute "NOT TO KILL" ones are written.
All other ones depend on the individual usage.
To me: I kill each one, that is killable
What about continuing my collection and making it more precise?

Sure, I'm glad to help but I'm newbe just tell me what to do
Hi, I am using watchDog to try to see what processes start while the phone is in sleep mode. But I cannot find anything on WatchDog that tells me what is consumming battery.
I hope I make it clear.
The situation is the following.
When the phone is sleeping, with no 3g or wifi, it takes around 10% in 8 hours. Just iddle. This happens at night. When sleeping.
As soon as I wake up, I turn on 3g. And the battery starts draining. I understand this is normal. But should the phone be awake all the time just by having 3g on?
The awake bar is almost full. Eventhough the phone is locked. This happens only when I turn 3g or wifi on.
That's basically my question. Sorry if it is misleading or something.
Regards
the phone will be awake if you installed some rogue app that connects to the net every 2 minutes to check something, or just some badly coded app.
So I should start uninstalling each app to see which is the one? Or can I use an application that will tell me that? Itried watchdog, but got no success.
Any ideas?
I've found eBuddy to keep my Awake bar completely solid... EVEN if I'm completely exited out of it. It has to do with the fact that like any other app, Gingerbread keeps a cached version of the process in the background. But in eBuddy's case, staying cached causes the phone to stay awake, so the only way to resolve this is to completely kill eBuddy and any of its cached processes.
That's why I still run ATK at 30 minute kill intervals. Getting great battery life. Here's my original post on this issue:

You can start by going into settings -> applications -> running services
Tap the "menu" button and make sure you are looking at only "show services in use" as opposed to all services including cashed.
You will get a list of about 10-30 (depending on what you installed and how you configured the phone)
Then go to settings -> accounts and sync, and under "manage accounts", see what accounts you created that sync up with somehting. make sure the icons (round circles) are green only for the accounts you truly want to sync.
Also tap through each account you do want to sync and check the sync settings . If there is an account that is set to sync every 2 minutes, or is set to sync at an unreasonable short time, change that. There could also be a bunch of account you what to totally switch into "manual sync" mode, for example email addresses you do not care about.

I do Crazy, 30 minutes, and Low level so that I can see all processes (including system level). I then run my phone as usual and add any/all system related processes to the ignore list.
Good luck, and hope it works for you as well.
I just made a test, and found that the app that makes my phone to be awake all the time is the MSN Talk Pro.
I disabled it, and everything went to normal.
Is this normal in IM apps, since the other person was having the issue with ebuddy?
How could I have the IM app running without having my phone awake all the time?
The task killer would definetly work, but then I would not be able to get msn messages.
Is this the only option?
Thank you.

Let me try to explain the situation.
If you have an IM client and you want it to be ready to accept messages from your buddies, it has to be in "listening" state to "hear" from your buddies. How that "listening" state is implemented by the developer defines how much batt power the application is eating.
Two opposite example:
1) Some stupid developer coded the IM client to always stay in foreground on your phone, actively pinging the servers on the internet , asking the servers if you have new messages. Your battery is wasted big time man.
2) A smart developer coded the IM client to use Google's C2DM interface (Cloud to Device Messaging framework). Such an app will stay dormant on the phone, and will be woken up by the android core processes whenever a new message arrives for you - Google servers will wake up the app on your phone. Such an app will not waste battery much.
There are a number of variations that go in between (1) and (2) above. So there is no clear-cut good or bad app. All depends on the implementation, and also on the way you configure your phone and the app on it.
Latest version of eBuddy was supposed to use C2DM too.
Ad the new Trillian is using C2DM. I never tried any of these though, can't vouch for any.
Just keep trying various IM apps until you find one that does not stay awake.

It has worked for me mate, worked well I should say. You deserve a Thanks mate.
I set it on Aggressive mode, with Auto kill at an interval of 1 hour, and NO apps but only my Power Schedule app in Ignore list, and I kept the Network On (Normally I use Flight Mode at night time), and after 9½ hours the battery drained just 2%, from 90% to 88%. Usually on Flight Mode I used to have a 3-4% drain overnight, so it's a big improvement.
BUT there are still two small but solid Awake bar present there while the Screen was off! What could be the reason? Is it because ATK was running and caused the Awake bar by itself or other apps? Take a look at the pic.
I have another query,
If I don't add any system apps (those come by default) to the Ignore list will there be any problem?
Regards.

I have recently removed watchdog and noticed that battery consumption rapidly reduced...
Good Day all,
I have benefitted greatly from Google and XDA. So I thought I would provide a consolidated way of saving our battery's grace from Android System demonic drain.
I am running Euphoria with Furnace, and I had loads of Gapps installed.
I tried multiple attempts over a 3 days period and did many researches back and forth. And it came down to these few main culprits:
1. Android Location Services
2. Google Play Services
3. Qualcomm Location Services
4. Google Now Launcher
5. Unwanted Sync
Tools I have used to assist in this matter.
1. Disable Service - here
2. Greenify
3. Privacy Guard (should be in built in most custom roms)
4. Titanium Backup
Basically the highest causing drain came from Google Play Services and Qualcomm Location Services. These items persistently wakes the phone up and runs on the background. Using greenify on there further cause issues as greenify tries to hibernate these services over and over again, making this a self-made draining routine.
I followed this thread on Google Play Services drain fix and used the Privacy Guard to perform those tricks. I ran through ALL Google Related Apps and as long as "Keep Awake", "Wake up" or "Auto Start" is enabled, I disabled them. I also look through apps I suspect were waking phone up by looking at the last activation of those events (Keep Awake, Wake Up, Auto Start).
Next I followed this thread on Guide to disable google play internal services using Disable Service app. I also took the opportunity to look at both 3rd party apps and system apps to see if there are services that could be disabled. I disabled Apex Notifier as I realize I didn't needed its service.
Then the next sneaky culprit was the Qualcomm Location Services. Even though I froze them with Titanium Backup, they persist in the system. So making a backup of them, I uninstalled them completely. Hasn't caused me any issue with GPS or Maps. They are namely, com.qualcomm.location and com.qualcomm.services.location. Both appeared as LocationServices 1.0 on Titanium Backup.
I went ahead to Greenify many Google Apps, namely Google App, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google+. I also Greenify many apps that Greenify suggested would slow system down or appear to run in the background which I have no use for.
Lastly I uninstalled Google Now Launcher as it was persistently coming up as alternative home launcher even though I froze it. And I also went through settings of apps to make sure sync were turn off. I only kept Calender and Contacts and Gmail Sync on.
Now I have reduced Android System from 34% to 2% and increased my SOT from 2++ hours to 4++ hours at least. Not an out of earth SOT, but I believe that's decent.
Hope I helped and I wish you all the best in your endeavour to reduce Android System Drain. Cheers.
Thanks bro
Will try and give feedback asap

It should be found in settings page, "Privacy".
I know that this guide is meant for CM based ROMs but I said to myself "ehh, what the hell" and I tried it on my Cloudy 2.2 and the results were horrible. Had to fully charge my device twice in order to go through 22 hours and a total of 2h of screen on time which consisted mostly of browsing and messaging. Wakelock Detector told me that the device was mostly asleep and everything was normal in the Batter Usage menu. Usually I get around 18-20h on a full charge with 2,5-3h SoT. Maybe the locations tweeks were not liked by my Tasker app and caused a huge battery drain, although it didn't appear that much as a wakelock trigger.
I am wondering if the problem was caused by Tasker or the stock ROM itself, but badly I do not have the time now to tweak around and I am reverting back to my previous configuration.

Try using GSam battery monitor to find out the real culprit. I used that to boil down to the final two irritants - Qualcomm LocationServices.
Really enjoying the app.

Hi all
I discovered that MIUI very aggressively kills background processes, which are needed for Push functions. Affected apps on my device (now with Global 8.0.3.0, but also with Chinese developer 6.x.x. Haven't tested 7.x.x.) are Touchdown, KIK, Gmail, Threema and others.
Those apps don't seem to have Push correctly working, some apps get messages with several hours delay.
I allowed all those apps to Autostart in the Settings -> Permissions.
There is an option in the Android Developer Options (To enable Developer Options Settings App > About Phone > MIUI Version > Keep on tapping till it is enabled.) called MIUI Optimization, which seems to have an effect on the memory process killing, but maybe also on the Permission functions. After I disabled this option and rebooted, several apps were running, although they weren't in the autostart permitted list. It's possible though, that they were active before the reboot and MIUI restarted them after the reboot.

Turn On MIUI Optimization : This option enables a pleothora of MIUI based settings & optimizations as per the guidelines set by the MIUI developers. This setting can sometimes cause a variety of issues on non-MIUI based apps such as Google Apps & Apps from Google Playstore. Its better to disable if you rely on Google Playstore for apps & services.
With the MIUI Optimization Enabled, some users reported the following issues.
- Cannot set third-party launcher like Nova, Apex or Google Now Launcher.
- Wallpaper cannot be set using in-built options via custom launchers.
- Occasional lags, stutters or freezes while scrolling web-pages & long lists.
- Custom apps set as default restore to default MIUI apps on reboot.
- Cannot set accessibility services on reboot.
- Background apps cannot sync data.
- Music players stop playing after sometime.
- UI Animations are not synced properly.

So far it doesn't seem to help though, but I'm testing a bit further.

You can also use, Push Notification Fixer from Google play. I only had the problem when using chinese rom. After switching to global, the notification a lot better
Go to the security app and inside saving battery settings and uncheck apps you don't want Miui to manage.
Done that now too, although I have already disabled the battery saver. I wonder if this will help a little, at the moment I don't get messages/notifications to my smartwatch, for example.
Hi,
This guide helped me (somehow): http://www.forbes.com/sites/bensin/...ions-on-xiaomis-miui-8-for-real/#1434cfd94e1b.
The 5 steps in short are:
Settings --> Battery & performance --> Manage apps battery usage --> choose apps --> select app that should receive push notifications and set "No restrictions"
Settings --> Permissions --> Autostart --> activate for all apps that should receive notifications
Settings --> Notifications & status bar --> App notifications --> select relevant app and activate "Priority"
In the overview of running apps/app manager lock the relevant apps (swiping down)
Settings --> Additional settings --> Developer options --> Memory optimisation --> set to "Off"
Push notifications now work perfectly on one phone (Redmi 3s with latest stock global rom stable), while i have still some troubles on another one (Mi 5s with latest xiaomi.eu stable). For the later the mail client (k9 mail) does not poll the mailboxes at the defined intervals (while k9 works fine on the redmi). Maybe also a configuration problem of k9, have no idea yet...
Regards,
gp

k9 is indeed cumbersome to the extent that you have a lot of settings and you have to apply many of them for each individual account separately. Sometimes less is more...
But once you managed that you can make use of the export/import settings function.
Most important feature for me is that all account settings are kept inside the app and can not be queried by other apps (which would be the case if the info is stored in the android account store).
Never tried Sol Mail so can't tell how this app manages the accounts...
I don't know either.
I choose Sol Mail after I had choose K9 because they offer unified view for received and sent message from every account into one single screen.

Go to the security app and inside saving battery settings and uncheck apps you don't want Miui to manage.

Done that now too, although I have already disabled the battery saver. I wonder if this will help a little, at the moment I don't get messages/notifications to my smartwatch, for example.
