Hello,
As AOSP build is near, I think we should be aware that the default Android apps are not as pretty as SE ones.
So, this list will include any nice replacement for a default app.
Please provide information like:
- <what it replaces , like Caller, Phonebook etc>
- <program name> ,
- status: "Free", "Free with ads", "Trial", "Paid".
- does it have a widget? describe it
I'm extremely open to rational suggestions and I'll update this list as soon as possible.
Caller/Phone book/Contact list replacements:
Youlu Address Book - Caller/Phonebook/Call log replacement.
Free.
Nice looking T9 caller/call log/address book.
Has a widget: Yes, one with 4 sections exactly like tabs on top of this app (caller, call log, contact list, favorites)

Has a widget: Yes, 3 types, with/without album list.
I already started with decompilation, studying, hacking and repackaging SE X10i apps for future custom ROM I like MediaScape.

Would be great if you could do that i like the Sony Style alot more then the default Android Style and i do not like all SE Apps but i like the Dialer.Camera App,Mediascape or Timescape and this Stuff.
I think I'm one of the few that actually likes SE's customizations to Android. I like the cohesive look of the interface, especially the style of the new phone book, in call app and chat app. What I don't like is how their software bogs down the system. For me the ideal situation would be a custom 2.2 with the Sony look but without the lag.

Hello all. I now have my XDA2, and I'm finding my way round it ok, but looking for software is like looking for a needle in a hay stack!
What's good? And what sites are good? I know Handango, but that falls under the hay stack category.
What I would really like is some way of customising the O2 Active interface, and the Today screen. Either specific software, or just advice on how to do it if no software is needed.
well it really comes down to what you'd like to use it for
much the same as with pc's
here are some freeware

Yes, you do.
"Customizing" can mean a lot of things. Themes? Phone dialer skins? Or active things like phone logs, status displays, etc? Do you want PIM extenders?
There are a million pieces of software. What do you want?
Okay, my bad
I want a theme editor, which I may already have found with the link you gave me. I also want a way of customizing the buttons on the O2 Active user interface (which I assume all O2 users are enforced to have). At the moment, they are opaque and are designed in the O2 water style. I wanna either make them transparent or redesign them to match my new background. Any clues?
cant claim to know what that active interface is but if it's exclusive o2 then i maybe they dont let others make themes for them
http://www.pdagold.com/themes/list.asp?tp=2
http://www.pdagold.com/themes/
they have some animated stuff themewise here seem to recall seing an editor not sure if it were free though
you are not forced to have anything in your rom
some things can be tuned off in today under settings
most things can be turned of by removing the shortcut to them from
windows\startup
I'm not sure what the "active interface" is, but I think maybe you mean the phone dialer? I don't have an O2 device, so not familiar with that term or its design.
If you mean the dialer, do a search and you'll find the details. Basically that interface is built with a dozen or so seperate .gif files, and you just have to copy in new ones. You can download a number of them, or just make your own. A Google search will surely turn up many. There was once a dialer skin contest, so there should be a lot out there.
I recently got a Cingular 8525 and really want the threaded features that the Palm application seems to provide. I've looked around a little bit and found nothing compelling for free or for sale. Everything I've seen so far is bloated (.NET), buggy, or ugly. No offense intended.
I'm proficient in C++ and have written some PPC 2003 applications in the past so I'm going to roll my own program in my free time.
These may not all be possible but my goals for the first release are:
Plays nice with Pocket Outlook (messages and their state (new, read appear in both places)
Integration with Notifications (display message and launch application in the usual manner upon receipt of a message)
Integration with Contacts application
Proof of concept design (SMS only, minimalist interface)
I'll then post it and the source code and see what additions and visual enhancements poeple want most.
First:
All I've seen of the Palm application are some screenshots on engadget. Would someone with the Palm application be willing to send me a series of detailed screen shots showcasing their favorite UI features?
I can tell when a UI is done well and when an application looks good, but I'm no good at coming up with stuff myself.
I only ask about UI features now to help me architect things in a way to make help me more easily implement features people want later.
Second:
Are any developers out there able to point me in the right direction for the Pocket Outlook and Contacts integration stuff? I'm currently reading a ton of documentation searching for this and a pointer might speed things up considerably.
Finally:
If there's already an open project doing the same thing I'd rather improve that than make my own. Does anyone know of one?
the official palm messaging app has been extracted and ppl have been working on getting it to play nice with most wm5 devices. check out:
http://www.ppcgeeks.com/palm-threaded-sms-program-for-wm5-beta-4-update-11-21-t978.html
This is where all the action's going on. you can get a copy of the app by PM ing the ppl there. It works very well with the TyTN and interfaces very nicely.
anyone have any more screenshots of the palm messager? I'ld like to see it before i take the plunger
Take the plunger, lol...
Found these on another site. Remember tho, Palm has asked us not to distribute the app. Please respect their authority

Hello all, I'm a software developer (VB/C#) but new to WM. I've recently bought SPB MS3 and fell in love with it instantly. Looking at the widgets currently available, am I correct in thinking creating new ones is just restricted to modding existing ones?
With this in mind I thought about how a facebook notification widget could be created (coming from a blackberry it’s the only thing I miss) I came up with the idea of:
Clone the excisting email notification
Change the picture and name of it Facebook (obviously)
Set up a dedicated email address and enable Facebook email notifications on facebook.com (this would be the only downside as it would also require the user to change their login email)
Develop a simple program which the "facebook" widget links to
The program will simply clear the email inbox and then launch the Facebook application if installed, if not then launch http://m.facebook.com
First of all, being new to SPB I’d just like to check if this is plausible or perhaps I'm missing something and there would be a simpler way to go about this?
Hello sir,
It is plausible and doable BUT there are so many great facebook applications out there like FIM that work so well when SPB is running. Yes I would love to see a facebook widget for SPB, but I really used the chat interface alot with facebook so if you can implement that it would be really good. Other than that just emails for notifications, that would be boring .
Let us know what you are thinking in more detail, and I can help you out.
thanks
Hey, think you may of misunderstood what I'm hoping to achieve. I'm not going to create a new facebook application just a simple SPB widget to show when you've got new facebook notifications, for example:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Oh thats cool you should do that, please go for it. I will be the first one to use it

The "Black Edition" of my Dark&Loaded Theme for Zooper Pro/Nova Launcher Pro is available @ http://mycolorscreen.com/2014/09/22/dark-loaded-black-edition-theme/
This is my favorite, everyday variation of the original theme with minor changes. Hope you enjoy this dark theme. It features lots of useful hotspots in 3 homescreens, including a custom agenda and smart music player.
LOVE THEME @ MyColorScreen, +1 on Google+, RESHARE!!!
Thanks!
I really like this theme, it's very well done, thanks for sharing! :good:
I can't seem to get the Media Utilities portion to work though. The album art, the music background, and the Play/Pause buttons are all always visible.

Then you must be on L Preview...Media Utilities is not compatible with this version of Android (hope it will work in the future).

Yep, that would be it! I tried checking the MU thread before this to see if there was anything regarding Android L compatibility, but I couldn't find anything. Searches using one letter are rough.
So that icon on the bottom of all the Nexus 6 renderings that some of us thought was a new Hangouts icon is actually another new SMS/MMS app. I guess enough people didn't like the text messaging - Hangouts integration. Direct quote from Google as well as info from AndroidPolice below.
Messenger and Hangouts offer users choice, each have their own benefits. Hangouts work great for cross platform (web, iOS, Android) and cross medium communications (video, voice,messaging, SMS). Messenger will be specially designed to be a quick and easy way to send and receive SMS and MMS messages on Android; more to come (Nexus 6 will come with both apps).

That's nice. Though I wish Google would just integrate them both flawlessly and have one unified messaging system.
As long as the app has had the full material design makeover i'll use it over hangouts. Hangouts always had a problem with closing in the background on me no matter what the phone but the stock one didn't and it annoys the hell out of me
Awesome. I think if Google just keeps changing the stock apps from one version of Android to another it will really enhance the useability of the ecosystem. Nothing makes things easier than having to relearn an interface over and over again.
Like the pointless recent design changes to Chrome. I love those. It was so annoying how I had gotten used to the way Chrome works. Where are the stumbling blocks and unnecessary changed features? Without those things there is no joy.
The best thing would be if Google changes the order of the back, home, and whatever that square button is, with each version of Android. Even better, they could switch which shape correlates to which function, while simultaneously changing the positions. And really, why not try putting the navbar on the top or side or back of the phone?
Thank God for gratuitous changes, otherwise life would be so painfully convenient.
They need to have a standard, stock SMS app for AOSP reasons. I don't really see them ever getting rid of it.
Hopefully this unifies the messaging system.
