just wondering if i should get an unlocked streak and retire my N1? Anyone with a streak please chime in...the one thing really are there any good roms for the streak and is it easy to root and how is the recovery image...i will be giving up cayenogen, ra recover...anything close for the streak???
Steve's Froyo is pretty much the only ROM I know of. It's really fast though.
I came from a Desire, the only reason to bother with the Streak is if you really want the extra screen real estate. I found the Desire to be more snappy and an overall better performer. I also prefer sense although I can live without it.
Would I make the same decision again??? I've already had the opportunity to... and I did
thanks for the reply. i alsways wanted to get one from day one, but its pretty hard when no one that i know of has one that i can play with. i have tried the captivate, droid x and even the new mytouch 4G. i have returned them all for they really didnt blow my N1 out of the water...there was no wow factor...so im in a delema on do i get the streak or wait till a dual core android comes out...im thinking that there shouldnt be one released till next year...is it true that the new unlocked streaks have an upgreaded hardware? thanks again?

nope, but it has 2.2 froyo
im pretty happy with my streak, comming from a htc touch pro for me this is the best thing happend. its the first time with a phone that people can accurately hear me and dont complain about the sound quality. the reception is also far superior to other phones i seen around. happy internetting while the majority is looking for a cellular connection.
im in the same boat bro,, im on a N1 too .. keep coming back to it..had a evo,vibrant,desire,hd2,and recently a hd7 that i returned cause didnt like the camera ...so im back to the N1 running 263 nightly super fast ,, but i saw the streak at besybuy and the screen size blew me away lol i was like wow imagine facebook or anything here lol huge...
so thats why im in here reading and ****... bestbuy selling the white version but of course ATT locked.. with 1.6 yeak..dell selling the unlocked version with 2.2 cool but delivery date says 12/8 or some like that .. damn im on tmo and kinda hate att ,,im not going to use thhis on edge no way ..meaning i would have to switch to att? is this really really worth it?

I know how it is on to keep coming back to the N1. now if caynogen made a rom for the streak that would be a no brainer...im also on the nightlies and yup its 263. the only other phone that kind of had me was the MT4G, but the reception sucks where i use my phone the most.
i almost pulled the trigger last night on the unlocked streak from dell's web site...but it says the delivery date will be 12-8-10 but it then gave me a delivery date of 12-21-10...now if i have to wait that long, i just might wait to see what everyone else has to say about it...and what new roms there will be...

Actually, I can vouch for this one too. Call quality for both ends of a call has been improved with the Streak.
One thing I noticed that was infinitely better on the Streak than the Desire... SPEAKERPHONE!!!
I could never hear anything on speakerphone while driving on my Desire, but the Streak is so loud that I actually have to turn it down little.
I've got one of the white Streaks from Best Buy coming in the mail (thanks Killster ) and I'm hoping it will be as simple to unlock as my other two Streaks were.
Captivate to Streak
Hey guys! I currently have a Samsung Captivate but am thinking of buying a new unlocked streak online which is rocking Froyo or heading over to my local best buy and picking up one of the white streaks they have in stock. So my question is this. I see that most everyone is using DJ Steve's Froyo rather than the Dell android 1.6. Does anyone know how the new Dell Froyo and Steve Froyo compare? I'm very impatient and Dell's website says the unlocked streaks will ship Dec. 11th. I've got money to burn and I don't know if I can make it three weeks for a shiny new phone/tablet android slice of perfection. I'm just happy that the streak's gps works. Captivate sucks!!! Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I have both a Nexus and a Streak. Honestly, I would hang onto your Nexus for a little while longer. I love my streak but I just keep coming back to the nexus with cyanogen. Plus, it would be tough to give up a Google experience phone. DJ Steve is awesome and hopefully will get cyanogen going on the streak but direct OTAs are hard to turn down.
My advice, do whatever it takes and have both. They're both awesome in their own ways.

thanks for your input, do you find yourself using the streak or N1 more on a daily basis?
I am really trying to make the streak my daily driver but as soon as I get home I am checking on the forums to see what new apps, tweaks, or roms there are for the nexus. Its hard to go from such a rich development community on the nexus to a 1 man show in DJ Steve (as good as he is).

Get the streak , you wont regret it. Its easily the best phone ive ever had. The size alone is the biggest selling point for me. I'll never go smaller than 5" again..
I just retired my N1 for good after getting my Streak up to official 2.2 + DJSteve/Fards tweak patch (via Smokku's instructions found here.
Having 5" for playing around with my favorite operating system is priceless. The hardware is fantastic quality. The only thing lacking is the camera, but lets be honest .. a $100 digicam is going to take 3x's as good of video and pictures if you really care about QUALITY.
Dell really put together a nice package with this mini-tablet / huge phone. I am a big guy .. 6'4" with hands that match my frame .. so this thing doesn't even feel THAT big in my hand. A week of having it with me, and I can't go back to the small screen, try as I might.
This thing screams just as loud as my N1 with the proper tweaks. It does really blow my mind how good the N1 was/is when you start trying to find phones out there standing tall above it.
Just as fast as any other 'droid phone .. but with a good .7" advantage on it's closest competitors (Droid X / Evo 4g).
Get this phone if you think you'll like the size. I am afraid nobody is going to make another 5" with the new dual-core stuff in the pipeline. The reason I am afraid is, I can't see myself going back to the smaller screens.
Any worried about the affording the Streak, Dell is including a $150 visa card for Black Friday sale. So u would actually be paying less than most of us.

THe white streak needs a special tool to upgrade from 1.6 to 2.2. I learned the hard way. Soft bricked twice lol. They are working on a tutorial for it now but if you can get into irc chat on channel #dellstreak they can help you out. I posted a thread about it in Modaco forum. DJ STEVES. 2.2 IS FAR superior to stock. I'm coming from a samsung captivate as well with all our problems it has it totally sucks. Streak just works.
I paid extra to buy the unlocked Streak with Froyo direct from Dell. Its a joke, it shipped with 1.6 and then a few minutes after starting up it popped up an "upgrade available" message. BUT it went smooth and only took about 20 minutes. So far this thing smokes a stock Captivate and the touchscreen is much better than the one on my old nexus. I do get the redirect error in the browser but not often.Unlocked streaks also don't need hacked to allow 3rd party app installation...you just click the box to allow it. This is the first device I've owned that I don't feel the need to hack the hell out of. It just works and I love it.

I just wanted to post a couple of links with recent reviews of Dell Streak running on official (un-tweaked) Froyo build. In most cases Streak outperforms Iphone 4, HTC EVO, Samsung Epic 4G or itself running on Android 1.6
While the official build is not perfect, it certainly gave the Streak a well deserved and anticipated power boost and now many reviewers take notice. The Streak happens to be the most practical and entertaining consumer portable internet device right now. With a few bits of marketing genius this could be the ultimate game changing device. Once you get people off the mindset of looking at it as some sort of super-sized phone and instead look at it as the most portable tablet (sorry galaxy tab but one can't really carry you around w/out some sort of bag) then you know that you have a peace of design masterpiece. Only those who don't really know what they're missing will dismiss this incredible device as something that I just noted the previous sentence.
So here are the two reviews, let's continue to work on developing more tweaks to make our Streaks even better.

If you are having trouble getting it installed then unmount your SD card and download it. It will install just fine then you can remount your SD card and move it there if you want. There is an issue with it trying to install to SD card straight from the market.
Thank you. It worked. Amazing. A beer for you. Now my dell streak is complete

this comparison does not make much sense anyway. (it makes touchwiz instead! ha ha wordtrick ) if as they point out the differences are based mainly on the adoption of froyo, the competitors should be benchmarked with froyo too

Exactly. Anyway, I love my Streak, but this test is not what I call objective. It´s like testing notebooks with Vista against a Win7. Guess who is the winner?
What are your benchmarks because as of right now my phone works fine but my benchmarks aren't good.

Hi folks,
I have a month left on my contract and looking at the streak or the DHD and it would be great if you guys who have the streak can leave your thoughts on why you chose it and what you like about it. The 'issue' I have at the moment is the way of charging it, not by USB. Ok its a small issue but I tend to have a charger connection at work and home just in case so would need to purchase another one (more expense lol)
The other thing is development as there only seems to be the one custom rom for it (please tell me if I am wrong).
So, benefits, nice massive screen is always good (coming from a Hero) and from what I have read its quite nippy too (has it the newer snapdragon or the older one?)
It either this or the DHD
Do a search mate there are lots of threads on people asking the same question and as far as development only Steve is doing it right now and he does a dam good job, one of the problems with development is Dell have not released the Source code until they do Steve can only do so much but he has done a lot better than dell.

Yeh I did a search but nowt. So, Dell are not releasing the source code? I thought this was against Googles rules?
I like HTC because theyre pretty good with updates and support and what not. What I don't like about their products is that theyre all nearly identical. As soon as they release a "ground breaking" product, they release another one that slightly tops it a month later.
I like the streak because theres no hardware (the screen) out there like it. Pair that with front cam, snapdragon, nice battery, and you have specs that rival the top of the game. Although the 1.6 os (for AT&T) is a joke, and theres only streakdroid as a custom rom, I find the streak community very supportive.
Streak is the best! Its only gonna get better as development increases. Get one, you should be able to return it within a month if you don't like it. Once you get used to the size, you can't go back. I never use my netbook anymore...
How many times in a day do you streak owners hear "Wow! Is that your phone!? Can i see it?"

Lemme summerize what ppl have been sayiing and how I feel about the streak. Amazing phone, obivously biggest advantage is the big screen, and trust me when I tell u this, when you go soooo big u won't be able to go back to 3.7 inches.
The biggest problem with the phone, the camera. If you are a camera person, do not get this phone. this is not to say the camera is crap, but its pretty bad for 5mp.
People have been telling me that they drop their phone and it wasn't a high drop and the screen broke, I drop my phone really hard on the bare ground from 4 feet high and nothing happened (alittle scartch on the back, nothing on the screen) regardless of what happens I have also heard dell will replace it without a big hassel.
I used an iPhone before this phone, and I like this phone better. I have many requests to trade phones from random strangers on the street when they see me using the phone, iPhone 4 users too. So if for some reason you don't like the phone I am sure it wont be hard to trade it up.

Get one man. I went from the iPhone 3g,S,4, HD2, Desire, EVO, and now this. I'm loving this bad boy. It puts the web and everything else in motion man. This screen is the biz. Couldn't wait so using BestBuy/ att locked version until my Dell unlocked comes in. My 30 days will be up on Feb 6 but phone supposed to be here by the 3rd! If not, will be returning this armed then buying it again to start a new 30 days. So wrong, but am I gonna do? Use my wifes Craptivate or the 3.5 iPhone sitting in my drawer? Nope. Can't wait for some Froyo goodness. I digressed some.

Thanks for the replies folks, I am hearing good things from both sides (my other option is the DHD) so if my provider will offer a test run then I will give both of them a whirl and judge that way. I am loving the screen size though. Its ideal. Just worried about development for it. Seems only one guy on the case?
Yeah but he's amazing we already have better that stock version of 2.2 running no problems. When I had stock my quadrant score was 800s now its 1500s and no overclocking.
So even its only one guy he is doing better work than 20 guys.

Cheers dude, I'm in England though
As other have said on here the Streak IMHO is probably the best device out there.
DJ_Steve may be the only person cooking a ROM for this thing but if he quit tomorrow i know that the 1.6.1 ROM that i'm running will be better than anything Dell ever puts out for this phone.
That being said if i had to choose another device i would probably got for the HTC Infuse on AT&T, which is the Desire HD for you. Same device, just different name.
Although, i'm biased, go with a Streak. You won't be sorry!

I love the Streak. It is insane how great it is and how much I love showing it off.
The only thing in the pipeline now that I would consider instead of the Streak would be the new Motorola ATRIX. A seriously high-end dual-core processor phone would be a step up, I think. But other than that, there isn't much out there to get excited about.
Hey everyone,
I am thinking about trading my Samsung Vibrant or possibly an iPhone 3GS for an Xperia X10. I honestly can't say that I know that much about the X10, so I'd love some advice...
1) Is the X10 still stuck on 1.6?
2) How good is the phone in general? In comparison to other android phones?
3) Can you use a different launcher to get closer to stock android experience?
4) Is the phone easily hackable?
Overall, how happy are you with your X10 and how would you classify it in relation to other Android devices?
Thanks for your time
I personally love my x10, it has an awesome 8.1 megapixel camera, and is just as fast as the EVO, Nexus One, and Desire, cause they all have the same chip. The current "official" firmware is 2.1, but sony ericsson announced it is getting gingerbread 2.3.3 at the end of june. you can install any launcher, that's not phone specific. the phone has 99% working custom froyo rom, and the bootloader has just recently been bypassed, so we will have improved kernels and such.
I think it's a matter of preference between the galaxy s and xperia x10, but I would take the x10 over the 3gs 10 out of 10 times, no comparison at all!
I love this phone, it would really depend what you're using it for however.
For gaming, I would stay stick with the galaxy s due to the true multitouch, as the dual touch on the x10 is shoddy at best. Also the screen on the sgs is pretty amazing.
For pictures/videos, the x10 is easily the best phone I've ever owned.
With the bootloader now bypassed, I would say you are going to see a LOT more development in a short amount of time, probably more over the next couple of months than in the whole history of the phone thus far.
Truly, I would say they are at least on par with one another.

This. I recently traded my two phones (xperia x10 mini and iphone 3gs) for an xperia x10 to use as my only phone. best decision i could possibly have made.
I just go my x10 a few weeks ago, love every bit of it.
I traded a samsung omnia II for it! (Sweet deal eh)
Very, very, easy to hack after a bit of reading up on the forums. Plus there are a lot of cheap cases for it on ebay. (just bought a great case for under $2 CAD!!)
And yes with the bootloader passed the development for the x10 is going to skyrocket.
I personally would trade it for the iPhone, where i live the Vibrant is worth a lot more than the 3gs.
Thanks everyone right now I'm using the Vibrant as my main phone, but AT&T recently added 3G to my area which the vibrant can't use, so that's why I'm looking at the X10.
What are the downsides of the X10?
well the multitouch is kinda shoddy in games, cause it's only dual touch. for pinch to zoom and games that use a lot of controls it kinda gets crazy, and as of right now it's only 2.1 but as i said it's getting official 2.3.3 in june so we can't wait for that! even the galaxy s doesnt have official 2.3.3, so thats great

no dual touch, only 65k colours for the screen, stuck with same kernel (well, test kernel is out but none that is truly useable yet), call volume is fairly low....

no, it's actually perfect if you're only using 2 fingers, as I said it's perfect in pinch to zoom, and keyboards such as swype, the touch screen is fully functional and fast, the keyboard is great

1) Is the X10 still stuck on 1.6?
No, unless you are still running AT&T branded firmware. It is on 2.1 now. It will be upgraded to 2.3.3 in Q2/Q3.
2) How good is the phone in general? In comparison to other android phones?
It is very good.
3) Can you use a different launcher to get closer to stock android experience?
Yes. The bootloader has been bypassed last week and things are getting more interesting for the X10.
4) Is the phone easily hackable?
Yes. Fairly easy.

if you have the time and desire for reading and learning about it, the phone is hands down worth its usual price point .... i got myn for free ... when i firsst go it out of the box i wasnt toooo impressed, but after having it for a few months now and spending some time looking through this forum and playing with the phone... it has its flaws, but overall it is still (after being released for over a year) still one of the best pieces of hardware available for the price.
i love it more every day
Ill trade you my x10 for your vibrant .

Hi I currently have a desire which I have had for a year and getting kinda bored with to be honest. Need something new to play with. The x10 larger screen and better camera are appealing to me but I'm concerned how stable the custom Roms are. Also is wifi tethering an issue on this phone? Thanks

Only issues are some bugs with the camera. Just little bugs (zooming, flash and stuff).
Wifi tethering is not possible with the stock function of froyo because we haven't got yet a custom kernel. Just use barnacle wifi to tether. Custom ROMs are really stable, never had a sudden reboot. Only sudden reboot was on alpha/beta of 2.2.1 and 2.3.x

Sad for a Streak 5 owner, like me.
Such a shame the device was poorly marketed, people I know who have seen mine, 50% say its too big, but the other 50% say they would love a larger screen but just hadnt heard about the streak. Shame on dells marketing department.
Only 3 months till I need to upgrade, and no sign of the opus one, looks like all my hopes are pinned on the rumors of a 5.3" galaxy 2......

what a shame, i own this device for over 3 months and i'm more than glad to own it...
but let's look on the bright side, not too many people will have such a great smartphone...and a big one too
I've still got mine, coming up on a year old (where does the time go?)
Came with 1.6, which was better than the previous windows mobile device I had
out of the box, 1.6 was better, I didn't have to change a crap load of settings like I did with WM to get it to function. I waited on 2.2 until December, being a noob on android, I didn't want to brick it. Now that I'm a little more familiar with android, I've customized mine to my liking, and 2.2.2 is rock stable.
Since this is a 75% work 25% personal device, I've held off on 2.3x for now.
It's a shame that Dell has no clue what a little gem they have on their hands.
They've killed it because the bean counters only look at how many they sold, and not the lack of promotion.
When time comes to get a newer device, I'll have to give a serious look before I get another 5" dell, if they even have one, and that's a shame. Over the past 10+ years, I've owned nothing but Dell laptops, and have had excellent results, and only a time or two, had to have them repaired, but Dell dropped the ball on the Streak.
I just read it a couple of minutes ago. Its such a shame. I hope they do release the drivers now, so devs can port Gingerbread/IceCream to it. Oh wait. It's Dell. Ah crap, there won't be ANY drivers.
So sad to see it go. Also looks like there will be no replacement for it either. While my Dell Streak has always had its share of quirks I've never liked a phone more. Most people who saw my phone had never heard of it. Even a few people who work in the AT&T store didn't know what it was. I'm also running 2.2.2 right now and it is really stable and very nice IMO.
That being said, I have had my share of issues. Both of the batteries that I've gotten from Dell had to be replaced and the third one in my phone is beginning to show signs of being either bad or getting there (not sure how that works as I only have Dell chargers for the phone). The phone tends to over heat when running GPS and anything else ie. I get a call or play music in the car. Despite my best efforts to keep it nice, the paint is chipping off of the battery cover and the Dell logo has completely come off.
After all of that I still love this phone and will be very sad when I do have to trade it in. Though I won't miss carrying around a charger in my pocket .
My conclusion is that this phone's failure was pretty much 100% Dell's fault. If they had just gotten the freakin' thing into an AT&T store instead of only selling it online and in BestBuy this wouldn't be happening right now.
lol XD
i bought my streak 2 weeks ago ( though my brother has yet to bring it to me from far off place -.-)
I don't know if i should be worried or feel proud.
I used brother's streak and it works wonders really.
So i think they won't update phone any further ? i wanted honeycomb for my mobile because that OS is made just for tablets. Any chance for updates for OS ?

Anyways. i have heard a lot about Steve on this forums. looks like he is a streak freak XD
Honeycomb not good for streak
Honeycomb was designed for tablets with hires screens without hardware home/menu/back buttons. The streak is not really a tablet but a phone with a big screen. I'd hate to lose the use of the hardware buttons and have to use on screen buttons in honeycomb.
Hell, a lot of android apps don't run well in honeycomb and need different versions.
The streak doesn't really benefit from running honeycomb.
I agree that if you are using the streak as a phone first device then yes HC does not sound practical. but once the streak has run its course for any cunsumer, which is soon, for me. I would love to turn this bad boy into a HC mini-tablet.

Not to pile on here, but I have to agree. I literally just picked up a Galaxy SII and the only redeeming quality of the Streak is the screen size advantage.
The Streak is a great device, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the Galaxy SII at this point in time. I loved my short stint with the Streak, really. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I want to share my experience.
My main complaints:
The speed. It actually feels slower than I ever imagined by comparison, but that's not a knock, really. After all, it's an older device
But....
The sound quality is absolutely abhorrent in comparison to the Galaxy SII or any other smartphone I've ever used, including the HD2, Vibrant, several Nokia devices, etc.
There is a constant and definitely audible signal noise in the Streak that really bugged me. As a recording engineer, I can definitely hear the difference between the audio systems on the two devices. When the playback system kicks in, you can literally hear the hiss in the background. When the playback stops, the hiss vanishes. Upon further investigation, it seems that this is a known issue that found its way into several reviews. If I hadn't heard it for myself, I'd have not believed how terrible it actually sounded, and frankly, it's SO bad that I find it inexcusable on such a high-end device.
I sold my iPod and bought a larger MicroSD to use my phone as my main portable media device, and the Streak really let me down.
I was able to sell it to a friend, since my boss agreed to subsidize my upgrade cost by 50%, so I came out about $100 ahead. I couldn't pass that up.
In my area at least, the Galaxy SII has a waiting list with at least 200 people's names on it.
Again, I don't want to sound ungrateful, because I liked a lot of aspects of the Streak, as it is a groundbreaking device in its class, but the killer was the audio system. It's really painfully bad.
I'm not sure if it was just MY device and those of the reviewers in isolation, but I doubt it. Maybe others just don't pay attention to it, but for me the hiss was disturbing.
I just got a new job and was issued a Dell Venue Pro with windows phone 7 on it.... started plugging around with that and it is now my primary phone. Can't believe how fluid it is and all the integration with mango. Using my streak primarily as a gps for the car now... :-(
just about had it with the streak being slow, clunky.. I don't blame Dell, I blame Android. After a few days with WM7... I can see that Android is not ready for prime time... it might be after whatever comes out after ice cream sandwich..
like usual though the camera is subpar on the dvp, just like the streak.
if google came out with navigation for wm7, it would be ditched already.
I never own a venue pro.must be good.do you think it's too thick or too heavy?

This is sad! You 2 guys are like celebrities in the Streak world...
I still love mine, but have not tried any newer phones. May have to look into the SGS II, as I don't see the Note being a viable alternative for the near future in the US.
Krad, what do you like about Winmo 7? I have had nothing but Windows phones since smart phones were invented (Streak is my first Android), but I heard Winmo 7 was just kind of a simplified (although pretty) UI. Is there lots of development?
I am positive that Android is the wave of the (foreseeable) future, and have really enjoyed it.

The new HTC titan looks nice,.4.7" screen. Note also looks good but I believe titan will come out sooner.
