4G in Detroit - EVO 4G General

Well I just chatted with a sprint rep about when 4G is coming to Detroit. Whether this rep is reliable or not, I'm not sure, but I am trying to find out anything I can. So here is what she told me:
Agent (Daisy D.): "I have checked and found that now 4 G is not available at Detroit but it will be available very soon."
Me: "do you know how soon"
Me: "like by the end of 2010?"
Agent (Daisy D.): "The confirmation like this is not available with us but whenever it will launched it will be notified on the sprint website. So please refer our website for latest updates."
Agent (Daisy D.): "I hope you understand this."
Me: "when you say it will be available very soon how do you know that if it doesn't tell you when it will be launched"
Agent (Daisy D.): "The launch date is not yet confirmed but the work is on progress so it will be launch very soon."
So whether we all should believe this or not, i dont know but I sure hope she is telling me the truth. I am getting very antsy and want some 4G. I am tempted to drive out to Grand Rapids one day just use 4G on my evo.

I have heard that we should have 4G by the end of December.

That would be a great christmas present now wouldn't it?

It would be nice, but I really don't know how much I'd use it. Considering 3g speeds aren't that bad around here, WiFi is everywhere, and 4G is a battery hog. I am anxious to try it out though.

Yea I will probably never use 4G but I just want to use it since my EVO is capable of doing it lol

you are 100% correct. its already been stated LA is getting it December 1st and the bay area mid december. other then that nothing has been annouced. if detroit was going to be official by end of year it more then likely wouldve been annouced with those.

The probably just started working on rolling out 4G in detroit so I'm guessing February or March of 2011 for us in detroit

Okay, that is a standard marketing speech to make you happy. Do the coverage map.. it says the same thing. Anytime they don't offer service they say it will be available soon. Until you get a actual release date don't get your hopes up.

Alright just chatted with another sprint rep and he informed me that the last rep I spoke to misstated her comment. By it being in progress, he said she meant that as a nationwide rollout, not just for detroit. Not surprised though so it isn't a let down for me

I was thinking the same thing. I'm pretty surprised at how well 3g works in this area and in fact continue to use it even when a wifi AP is "available". ( ::coughBordersBookscough:: )
Unless 4g is really sooo much better, I'm really not chomping at the bit for it to get here.

All you people who keep saying its not that important are trippin. Its like being on wifi all the time, and wifi is definitely better then 3g. When you watch YouTube it doesn't start high quality and instantly on 3g but it does on 4g. They are not to be compared and many people are making that comparison in this thread

There is one tiny little area in chesterfield that you can grab 4g at times. Ive talked with one sprint rep and have been "unofficially" told there are a couple test areas up but they are hit and miss whether you will connect to them on a continuous basis. From what Ive heard from multiple reps, Verizon will have it here in Detroit before Sprint and we may very well not get it before next summer. Someone needs to figure out how to tap into MetroPCS' 4G towers.
As for the Lions playoffs vs 4G Detroit....My monies on the Apocalypse happening before either of those 2

Not really. I only pull 1mbps on average with 3g (most of the time less) and between 6-9 mbps on 4g. You do the math

I was over by grand rapids awhile back and flipped on 4g. It's very nice.
Based on the conversations shown here, I'd be turning on my 4g anytime I'm near Detroit, seeing if anything is picked up...

Not exactly. I used to work for T-Mobile. I used to find out about new phones on Google faster then through T-Mobile. I don't want to say anything bad but most reps don't know anything.
A T-Mobile rep at Best Buy told me my G2 wasn't capable of 4G speeds... In other words never trust rep talk. Just look it up here or some decent website like Pocketnow.

As strange as it seems to you, he was actually correct. 4G was intended to mean LTE-ADVANCED, something like 100 Mbps.
But a bunch of the douchebag carriers started marketing their services as "4G" even though they didn't come ANYWHERE NEAR that.... so 4G was re-defined to be nothing more than HSPA (or equivalent). Basically, 3G and 4G are the same thing now.

If that is the case...Then all of the carriers are lying. None of the company's that are saying "4G" are hitting 100Mbps. The rep from Best-Buy didn't know what he was talking about. He didn't mean LTE-Advanced either. He was just trying to sound like he knew what he was talking about. We know what true "4G" is but for now we have to settle with the "4G" that is given to us.
LOL Yeah I really like the T-Mo reps... really nice people and never had a bad experience... but most of them know nothing of their products. To be fair, I think many of these people don't really have a "passion" for this stuff as most of us obviously do, so to them its likely a job and a paycheck. I remember when I got my MyTouch 3G, (my first smartphone) I asked a rep what the weird digitized blocks were on an app brochure, and he told me they were typos, most likely blobs of ink from the printers. Turns out they were QR codes.
I am a T-mobile sales rep. Corporate does not give front line employees info on release dates and software upgrades until the last possible moment. When the new rate plans started this past Sunday there were not any rateplan guides in stores.
I get more up to date info on from sites like xda and tmonews way before corporate releases it.
Go easy on reps that share what they have heard, they are trying to be helpful but rumors and are just that. I occasionally get info ahead of time from product reps (like HTC) but things change all the time.
Latest rumor making the rounds is the 2.3 ota for the g2 should be out next week.
We will see how that pans out.

So what your saying is that you can't believe what a salesperson tells you. I really hope this isn't news to you. I have first hand experience with T-Mobile and their reps and I can tell you that they are for sure salespeople first and some just happen to care. They get information so slowly from Corporate it's kind of mind numbing. Anyone who frequents tech blogs knew about the AT&T merger before T-Mobiles employees. I called the person I know there and they had heard nothing about it. You think they care when the phone they sold you 8 months ago gets the update? Nope.
Technically that is the phone manufacturers domain. T-Mobile really has nothing to do with it. Why do you think it takes 2 years for Samsung to update the Galaxy line which is on multiple carriers. Just Sayin.

Wow......gotta "love" AT&T.....

Well......just spent an hour and a half, got disconnected twice, and then got the "Customer Service Center is CLOSED" message after the second disconnect.......I was trying to get an update on when the third party app sources would be released per their official confirmation back on May 17th......no one seemed to know anything about it......they had already released it to the INFUSE and to a few other phones, with the rest of the android phones to get the update within the next few weeks (some people have confirmed that they have received the update)......no one with AT&T Customer Service had any idea what I was talking about.....I had to explain in excruciating detail, what was supposed to be happening......they even got me on the phone with Motorola, and they knew what I was talking about, and said they were told the same thing, that AT&T would be releasing the hold......so AT&T was "trying" to get a higher level of Customer Service, when I was disconnected the first time......SO......got nowhere fast, and can't call back till tomorrow......VERY frustrating......if anyone has heard any update to this, please respond to this TOO long of a message......sorry guys......
Customer service has no info on this, I know because I work for ATT customer care. I've looked and talked to our tech team and android team. We are not privy to that information.

your first mistake was thinking that AT&T CS knew the answer.
Why would they not have info on this? This was BIG news from AT&T, and you would think that, at LEAST, they would have the info that THERE IS an update, even if they don't know WHEN......even the reps at the AT&T store near me, when I bought the Atrix a couple of weeks ago, were told that the update was expected any day......and that several of the phones were already updated, and were being sold already like that......such as the INFUSE, Aria, etc......just trying to understand why, with such a big deal, they wouldn't know ANYTHING......any ideas? And again, sorry......just frustrated after being disconnected twice and not getting anywhere......
And I'm not bashing their customer service......normally I get very good service when I deal with them......just seems like this would have been addressed.....
CSR is generally good, except a few jerks. If you get those, just hang up and dial again.
Since we're on the topic of AT&T, I wanted to point out something for people with AT&T who aren't on unlimited data
AT&T billing and this is Important for those of you with 2GB or 200MB data plans
If you use data the day before your billing cycle ends, there is a likelyhood that the amount of data that is on that day will roll over to the next day. It has to do with the way the system updates. It's not exactly in real time or so they say.
Your billing info will show data from that day on the next billing cycle.
I've gone through this problem about 7 times before I did the Unlimited loop hole.
So, at the end of every month, you should check your bill to see if they charged you data for usage you a day before your billing cycle.
Example:
Data shows March 22 usage on a a belling cycle that is from February 22 to March 21

like 1 out of probably 10,000 calls might a customer actually ask that question. this is why att releases announcements online where people who know whats up with phones are and why att wouldn't feel the need to inform the cs reps of something that is like lighting striking the same place twice. if google doesn't know do you really think a cs rep will know?

Here's something, ermm, interesting.

Saw this as a comment on an androidcentral post about the within:
Listen up and listen good cuz I don't lie or play when it comes to this stuff... Sprint Is kicking but this year and will continue that but kicking like none of you can imagine. I am a sprint employee work at the West Hollywood Store in CA. It's the flagship store for the west coast Dan Hesse frequents our store device's come through our store sometimes up to 5 months before a rumor about it hits the internet. This is a HUGE year for sprint if you understand business in the least bit you know corporate change takes time. If you can't see the changes sprint has made and continue to make for the better than your just blind or don know what to look for. I know some of you may call me bias and your right I am. But only to one thing and that's customer experience. I love that SPRINT by maintaining is price plans is forcing AT& T and T-Mob todo stuff like the 70 dollar unlimited data even if it is capped. Yes thee above pic is the GS2 i've held it. YES it will be 4G yes we are getting a keyboard version as well as the standard GS2. Yes that phone will also be 4G and dual core not single core. The its not for certain it will be the epic2 or called epic at all. Yes the GS2 is a vicious competitor for the Evo 3D from personal experience I still think the Evo 3D is better. I prefer sense over touch anything I trust htc more than samsungs when it comes to mobile anything and the internal update system htc uses not having to wait for sprint like the last two patches they did for the 3d speaks volumes. Add htcsense.com to that and better build quality and you begin to edge out the competition. Admittedly not by much with the GS2 but still its an edge. As far as the YouTube comparisons of the GS2 to the Sensation to gauge it again the 3D, don't make me laugh the 3D itself makes the sensation look the same way. In no way am I denying the amazingness that is the GS2 I just PREFER htc that's all. Last but not least the GS2 is really really fast it was a tad and I do mean a TAD faster than my 3D but..... My Evo is jam packed 6 email accounts syncing about 80 apps 7 custom scenes setup the whole 9 and the GS2 was but naked not even signed into a gmail account. I say that today this when you watch these comparison vids take into account what may or may not be on the devices in question in terms of data info etc... Once you get these devices in hand your speed milage Will vary depending on how much you throw at your device. It's a good time to be with sprint I'm not even going to get into the improvements happening to the network ill save that for another post. And oh yeah in case you were skeptical on the matter we are absolutely getting the iphone so tell all your apple juice drinking buddies that VZ and AT&T's are numbered it'll be here before you know it. The real question is will it be 4G and honestly even I don't have that answer................ Yet. PS if your in the LA area and you want to switch to sprint I can give you 125 dollar port in credit... Yes we pay YOU 125.00 bucks to KEEP your number give me a shout PM me. Duece

I trust nothing of what that guy wrote. Everytime someone claims to have advanced knowledge they are wrong completely. Why the eff would sprint bring rumored phones around a retail store before they are even announced? That just makes no sense. I have dealt with enough sprint employees who "have the scoop" and turn out to be collosal nitwits before to believe that some random sprint store employee got the scoop on sprint getting the iphone.
I do think he is a sprint employee though because every sprint employee I have ever dealt with is a huge fanboy of the evo.

I work for a regional electronics and appliance chain, that is becoming a full device sprint dealer this fall. At a training event for sales reps the sprint trainer brought up an iphone 5 variant for sprint a few times. Interesting to hear it from this guy as well. Although if I had to guess, they are both misreading it, and all we are likely to see is the new prepaid iphone version coming out for virgin.

I hate when people say the EVO 3d is a better phone than SG2 even though across the board SG2 eats 3d. Granted htc sense 3.0 is sexy, but MIUI is better
Sprint's overall phone lineup is strong with or without the iPhone. It has been for a while. The issues are that they have to quickly maintain and improve their network and hold prices and plans to the attractive level they are now. I don't believe in corporate hype, I believe in underpromising and overdelivering. Sprint did that in the years I've been with them.
Now they have to continue so they can grow and poach away customers who get sick of being robbed by Verizon and AT&T. But without the network that's going to be even harder to do. Take my neighborhood for example--coverage here is poor, Sprint probably has no customers other than people like me who figured out how to force roam, or those who have Airaves. And it's doubtful any new towers are planned, so they better get busy on these network improvement miracles, because reasonably priced unlimited 4G makes no difference to those who can't get it.

not where I am either, but I'm sayin' for the rest of the folks that aren't so lucky.
Clearwire is in trouble. They were considering skipping their debt payment this month, which can't mean anything good. They had a $237M debt (actually just an interest) payment due, and sprint gave them $1.6B. That's less than 7 months of interest payments, assuming the payment is a constant $237M each month, and not counting costs of running the company day to day. I have a feeling Sprint just set fire to $1.6B. I guess it's better than having the 4G service just shut off, before Sprint has a chance to get off the ground with their LTE network.
Sprint should have just built their own network, instead of partnering with companies that are damaged goods.
Edit: Most of the first paragraph was originally based on the payment being for both principal and interest. Since it's only for interest....clearwire is screwed. Say goodbye to wimax in a few months. I give it until April, and then clear files for bankruptcy, and their assets are sold off shortly thereafter.

Yaawn!
Without them(developers) this place would not be called *Insert You Device Forum Name Here* but something else, e.g Mobile Phone & Tablet User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds.

Get over yourself.
I talked to sprint about it and they said it's probably years off still. So I don't think we'll even have to worry about it for even 2012. They said it was going to take a long time to implement it.

Here's a little something:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...as-plans-for-voice-over-lte-says-iyad-tarazi/
EDIT: For whatever reason I have 4G. But the funny thing is the coverage map says I don't. It's all good with me.

I will be interested to see what pans out before March 31st. Don't they have some announcement coming in January?
Edit: Sprint does have an announcement with Samsung and Intel, during CES, Jan 10-13.

GOODBYE!!!! <Tears>

Wow.. it's actually true.. I am going to get sad..
Unlike a forum for a certain car, like My old Mustang or M3, I know this will be a forever goodbye as I will never get another EVO..
I'm leaving..
After enough BS with Sprint, the promises of 4G, I'm done..
T-mobile, which is lightning fast for my area (down load speeds of 9-12 are not un common)
is having a sale this weekend.. Free phones.. any of them..
i'm getting the GSII
and pretty excited.
But I realized.. For over a year I've been modding and theming, roming, kerneling and radioing with you guys..
Now, its over..
It sucks because there is almost no development for the GSII on T-mobile..
I was gonna wait for the Nexus that Sprint said was going to come this month, now they say mid 2012..
Plus, ZERO LTE.. I don't trust them..
Either way.. I'm out..
thanks for all the help and to dev's you guys are awesome..
P.S. selling my EVO for 50 bucks..
Good luck and totally understand why you're doing this. What I find truly sad is that an awesome phone like the Evo sells for $50, yet an outdated POS like iPhone 3G still sells for $200+ on craigslist.

So true...
SO DAMN TRUE..
Damn, 50$? That's a steal. If I weren't in such dire straits right now I'd love to relieve you of it. I'm sure its kinda sad to ho. I've been a member/participant of the Evo forum since before it was even available. Its been a great ride. Enjoy your Sammy (I wish you a better experience than I or my family and friends have had with Sammy phones)

yeah its crazy what sprint's doing (nothing). I moved to a new town, a few towns over from where I was living, and last year it was great, the data speeds. A few months ago, garbage. Still, garbage. I've been with sprint for 12 years...and i'm considering moving to another carrier. I feel like gsm will be my next step. i'm so pissed that they're running this company into the ground. wimax was such a bad idea.. i'm just gonna smoke a bowl and try to forget that it takes 10 minutes for my phone to download a facebook update, and google music barely ever streams properly.. yo at least the call quality is still superb though.
Not ALL the TMobile phones are free. The G SII is 229.00, according to their website
Totally understand the need for speed. Here in eastern NC, we're never gonna get 4G of any kind, so I'll stick with Sprint, as their service in this area is second to none and their prices are outstanding.
Gikd luck with the move. If you still feel the need I'm willing to take that evo off your hands. I can help you out with that. Let me know so sorryy to see you go. pm me.

Me too.. was with Sprint for 11 years..
I was suckered into the EVO.. Promised (by not only the sales guy but customer service too) that 4G would be in my area within month..
I was asked to pay 10 bucks more a month.... Call it what you want, it was for the 4G!!!
I was going to wait and get the Nexus as I was told its coming this month, I was even told LTE is going to be spread like a wild fire and by the end of 2012 it will be all over the united states..
Then go look at their site, they show a video of where LTE will be installed.. not even in my state..
I got this phone today.. Its sexy as hell.. My download speeds which I've done about 30 now, lol, vary from 22 down 5 up to the lowest of , 6 down 1.5 up..
It's unreal!!
Netflix,Slingplayer,HBO GO, everything is un real fast...

It's free today only.. Any phone in their store..
2 year contract, you do have to pay for it upfront, (figured that) and rebate it back..
Just like the damn EVO..
Either way.. this phone is sick!
Good luck with the switch, in your galaxy, far, far away.
pics of said evo's condition...please and thank you!
NetworkVision is going to make some huge improvements in 99% of places guys. Leaving sprint now is like leaving at the absolute worst of times and you'll miss out on the great times in the near future.
LTE will spread like wild fire and be complete by next years end.
Now if you have no problem going and paying more elsewhere and having data caps/throttling then more power to ya.
A site for some very solid sprint network info that I've run across is "s4grub.com" as there is a wealth of detailed information there, most of which you couldn't even get from sprint themselves.

Been hearing the same **** about "plain old" 4G for the last 3 years. Now miraculously Sprint is going to be "complete" with ANYTHING?
I won't hold my breath.
Or maybe I will at least until May when my Sprint contract is up....
