Hello
I don't like TouchWiz, like most I thing its a bad copy of iOS.
Can we completely remove TouchWiz? I understand that if I install LauncherPro touchwiz il still work in the background...if we root SGS can we remove touchwiz? if yes how can we remove it?
Not unless if you root your phone, and not until a stock android ROM is available for Galaxy S.
I want to root my SGS but after I root the sgs how can I remove touchwiz?

Correct me if I'm wrong but...
Parts of i9000's applications/services rely on code that exist in the TouchWiz package. Until a stock android ROM is released that can replace these code parts entirely removing TouchWiz won't be possible (without breaking your phone, that is).

I might just confuse the issue, by "stock" I read "vanilla" (I know how to root, but definitely don't know the lingo). I also assume that some functions he'd be ok with staying similar, like how the ROM communicates with the phone's radio and makes calls. The available ROMs should definitely accomplish this, even if leaving some of the functionality untouched.
I don't know all the ROMs available, and know even less about the underlying functionality save but 1 or 2. And, specific to how I might be confusing "stock" with "vanilla" but he didn't specifically ask for Vanilla, so wouldn't he just need a ROM that isn't TouchWiz UI to accomplish his main goal? He's definitely trying to eliminate at least some, if not most or all, of the wasted background software functions that his phone is currently doing if he uses an "overlay UI" (sorry again for lack of terminology). And maybe I haven't helped anyone even point him in the right direction.

I'm no master of the details, but the way I write stock could indeed be considered vanilla. Basically, stock would be Android 2.1 without any kind of third party Launcher, ie Nexus One style.
The way I've come to understand it is that the "launchers" that come with phones (Sense, TouchWiz) are not only Launchers but also provide a layer to communicate with the hardware.
It should be possible to replace this with custom roms, or in some way replace that layer of communication. But until this is done it won't be possible to simply remove TouchWiz entirely.
There also doesn't seem to be that many ROMs that officially support i9000 yet, though I haven't really looked too deeply.

I've just installed LauncherPro, using Home Switcher to select LauncherPro as default, the TouchWiz Start process doesn't seem to launch at boot. Seems perfectly okay to me.

You're just not seeing it, in more than one sense of the word. It's still consuming memory, which, I'll assume, is the OPs concern. We all would like a bit more memory with a bit less bloat.
The best way to test is, don't use LauncherPro, check your memory with all the tasks killed. Then, reboot with your typically setting with LauncherPro and Home Switcher, your available memory will be lower by about 20mb (I know not much, but we are probably trying to eliminate more than 20MB of wasted memory by eliminating a lot of the bloat TW might be adding.
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-disable-touchwiz-epic-4g
I have the vibrant and wish I could do this. For people that try it, does it make the epic faster?
From what I understand about Android, this will not disable TouchWiz. What you are doing is simply changing the action of the home key. It will still be loaded into memory. It's a nice option, some people might prefer the stock android UI.
I believe installing 3rd party launchers like ADW.Launcher would do the same thing.
The mere fact that TW is not showing can be defined as disabled, no?
TW is just a skinned UI over the Android framework.
Correct, Android should automatically kill that UI after a while of no usage and no longer load it
Question??
Question once its rooted. Are u able to remove touch wiz all together rather then swapping the interface?

I don't know much about TW but im sure some ROM's will surface with TW removed
I went ahead and tried it out. When I went to the stock interface, I found several widgets that I had deleted still there. I went ahead and "trashed" all the widgets on the default UI. Then I went back to using Samsung's interface. Don't know if that saved me any memory or not...but it sure sounded good at the moment.
Ps. don't mean to hijack the thread... it seems relevant I guess.
I have grown very fond of the Sense UI, as a lot of people here have. But, one thing that I HATE with a passion is the contacts and dialer that Sense uses. I love the dialer that is used in the non-Sense builds, which if memory serves is just the AOSP dialer (or perhaps its the one by wysie).
Anyways, my question is this: Is there any way for me to get the AOSP/Wysie contacts and dialer onto a Sense build? I have tried the basic things of pushing the APKs over via adb, or trying to install them via adb, etc. It all fails.
I know this has been posted once before, but thought that perhaps since the time it was last posted that maybe someone has come up with an idea or two.
Any suggestions, or am I SOL?
Was wondering if this was possible on our hd2s?
I like all the htc skins parts in android (dialer, text, browser, general theme) but want launcher pro instead on the sense home screen.
I use taskiller but the sense stuff always comes back. I did a search and found this on the evo forum. Sounds good, would it mess the phone? Or not work at all?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=769525
worst case scenario is that you have to start your android build again.
no danger of bricking the phone anyway......
id try it but id want sense back after 10 mins.....
what im wondering is why dont you just run a non sense android build?
was trying to get it working, but unsure how to run it? its a zip file which contains loads of other files that i cant run?
I use ADW launcher with MDJ Froyo 1.1 Matt with no problems as my default launcher and that is a sense build, it actualy runs a little smoother in my opinion.
I use Launcher Pro on top of Sense (see my build and pic below). It is fantastic. I recommend purchasing the full, as well as purchasing Beautiful Widgets (both from the market).
Fantastic custom screen and faster movement.
woks well, but with froyo I am always fighting for a bit of ram. If froyo is your type of build then launcher pro is recommended. You can still launch the radio via programs
Install your launcher of choice from the market/apk and when you click the home button you'll get a pop-up asking which one you'd like to use (sense/your other launcher). click the box saying "always use this choice" and select your launcher. Sense will close, your launcher will open and that's it, done.
You can change your option later if you regret it in your system settings.
So, what your saying is that it doesnt matter? Its just when using taskiller i see the services restarting all the time...
I'm not saying it won't stop the services from starting all the time (there's probably a way round that as well, although I've not bothered looking) but the services shouldn't use much ram anyway, and they're responsible for other background tasks, not just the graphical front end.
Yeah, I dont want to stop it all...just certain parts. Im unsure how to run the file which i posted up on the original post...any ideas? I would like to try it as it sounds ideal (you might like the sound of it yourself)
I don't think I would run that file with these builds. Go download a Nexus build if you really want no Sense. Otherwise, some files run, but take so little space it is incidental.
For example HTC Sense takes a several MB's when running as your home screen. Using Launcher Pro as default home causes that number to drop to 48kb...almost nothing.
And I would get Home Switcher from the market in case you change your mind later or need to access Sense.
So...just to confirm I cannot get rid of the sense launcher...but keep:
taskbar
dialer
skinned browser
general theme throughout
It it honestly just me that wants this haha!

I would be nice to know how to flash that file uploaded in the evo forum..
Anyone knows how to dit it and ill give it a try
I tried, but dont know how...can any expert look at my original post and see?
Other parts of the xda forum ask for this...but here im told to use either sense or froyo...i want the best of both.
I have looked into some stuff, and I'm getting an idea of what my ROM is going to look like.
ROM details
Name: Entity
Theme: Entity white/blue (white/blue [very] minimalistic theme)
Based on: Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 (Android 2.3.4) - will be changed to a stable version as soon as available
Kernel: Jame Bond sabai dee 1.5.9
Features
- Revamped homescreen. I will use ADW Launcher for that.
- New pre-installed apps. I'm planning to include paid apps, but if I do, I won't be able to upload it here anymore. Haven't found a solution
- Heavily themed. EVERYTHING is themed, even all the pre-installed apps
- Revamped settings menu. New layout, removed settings I never use anyway, and added new settings. I will also change the settings menus of pre-installed apps
- Voodoo Sound
- BLN
- No ads
- More theme colors in the future!
Details
I want my ROM to be perfect for me. It resembles what I want. The reason that my theme has the same name, is because the theme is the biggest part of the ROM. My goal is to create a fresh-looking ROM. All pre-installed apps will look the same, making it more of an entity, hence the name. It will also be much clearer than stock ROM or CM7.
Because I'm making this ROM for myself, it is possible that I deleted some things you might not want me to delete. I'm sorry, but I can't do anything about that. I'm planning on uploading my ROM, but that's all. I will not take requests. What I will do, is include a list of all the things I've changed compared to CM7, so you can check if you want my ROM. If you have my taste, you will like my ROM. If not, that's not a big deal. I'm not uploading it because I want many people to use my ROM. I'm uploading it because... why not? Maybe people like it. Who knows.
I'll upload three files:
- The whole ROM, excluding Google Apps (don't know why CM and I can't include Gapps, but NSCollab can...?) and paid apps.
- The themed Gapps. Can't upload the themed paid apps.
- The theme
It might be possible with Theme Chooser to theme the paid apps. That way you can just download/buy the paid apps, and the Theme Chooser will theme them. That's something for the future though.
Cool man, im pretty much doing the same thing as you except im making a kernel
Wish you luck, ill be following this thread

Cool, good luck to you too!
It looks like you are more experienced. I have no experience at all except for some rooting experience. I'm still suprised that I managed to root my device without much help . Other than that I installed some custom ROMs but that isn't difficult.
I saw you have experience with making some basic ROMs. Regarding the ROM making, this is what I will do:
- Experiment with the HTC Android Kitchen
- Change the settings menu (+ settings menus on pre-installed apps):
Change the text on buttons
Change the order in which the buttons are shown
Remove some buttons that I don't use anyway
Move buttons from one section to another
Add some settings (the hardest one probably). For example I would like to add the voodoo settings in the settings menu
- That's about it I guess, don't really know what I could change with my knowledge.
The thing is, I'm mainly after changing the looks and experience. My goal is to make it look like nothing you've seen before. I want it to be clean, fresh, and it must look like it's one whole. And because I'm mainly after changing the looks, what else is there to change other than settings on pre-installed apps and some things HTC Android Kitchen can do?
So that's what I wanted to ask you: what is something you did when making basic ROMs?
Updated the first post. I'm kind of getting an idea of what I want.

First of all i'll start by saying that putting paid apps on there and releasing it in any form is a major no-no. Do NOT do that.
Most of the stuff ive messed with is sense roms back on my Evo. Things like removing sense, zip aline on boot, deodexing, re-directing the path of some apps, and playing with some status bar mods and other stuff im probably forgetting.
Im not sure what you mean by "buttons" which buttons are you talking about? Menu buttons? As for adding apps in the settings menu, i dont think it will be to complicated. For a start you can look at a stock CM7 build and track down how they link ADW to the settings menu.
Dont worry about making a masterpiece of a rom, we all gotta start somewhere and im not much more versed in this than you
Needless to say, dont hesitate to Gtalk/G+ me [[email protected]] and ill *try* to help you out

I already thought paid apps wouldn't be a good idea. I'll do that only for myself then (since I already paid for them).
With buttons I mean the buttons in the settings apk. Like the button to turn on/off WiFi. But it looks you already know what I mean. Tracking down how they added ADW is an awesome idea, thanks a lot for that! That will probably also help me with the other things I want to add/change/remove in the settings apk.
I'm really excited about it, and playing around with the HTC Android ROM kitchen today gave me good hopes. When I encounter a problem, I'll contact you.
Thanks!
Updated the first post. I think the ROM name is going to be Entity.
