Update yor Bell to Froyo With Registery Patch!!! - Galaxy S I9000 General

I was suffering from lack of information before I upgrade to froyo through Kies with reg patch. I was afraid of the modem file that JPO has (850 band concern and compability issues) with Bell Sgs.
I had enough with their lies and delays so I upgraded my JH2 to JPO using the latest Kies with reg patch. Everything went smooth and easy.
Although Kies gave erors saying "upgrade unsuccesful cant connect to phone" (something like that i dont remember exactly) during the upgrade after the phone went to download mode. Basically whay happened was, I was clicking the upgrade button in kies then kies was downloading files and binaries. After that phone restarts with download mode and then installation aborts. If u face with this.problem just foctory reset the phone and try again. Unfortunatelly have tried like 4 times waiting kies download binaries in 15 min each time.
I would like to say to people who is waiting for stupid bell to release froro its been 2 days now and I am running JPO without any problems. 850 band is still here and everything works like its suppose to.
If u would like to upgrade with reg patch I reccommend it. But i have to say Do at ur own risk!!!!

what settings did you use for kies? and by chance do you know what date your phone was made? i think it says it on your battery and on the phone behind the battery

I used the latest version of patcher. Settings comes with patcher. I used the xeu file in it. I m sorry i m walking now and cant check the date.but will post when i get home

i am looking to do this too, waiting for your reply about the phone date (under the battery, on the phone, mine says 10.08)
Thanks

does your front camera work?

Use doc's 2.2 JPO. ROM.. it works way better then any stock ROM and its safer then the kies REG hack. everything works with this rom.

Agreed. Also I don't know why these threads keep talking about the 850 band. The band is decided by your hardware, and I have never hard the 850 band not work in any ROM. If 850 did not work I would not even have coverage because Bell is only 850.

That's a new one on me. Every thread I've seen about Bells frequencies indicate 850 and 1900 wcdma(HSPDA)
Also I thought when the phone shows 3G that's 1900 and when it displays H that's 850?
Of course I'm no tech guy so I'll let someone else dispute it with facts if they have them.

Losing the 850 Band is definitely real, It's happened to me twice and had to flash back to JH8 and select the BCC CSC.

Nope. It didnt happen to me. I updated via reg patch.

I upgraded with the registry patch yesterday. Worked fine until I tried to root. Screen went white, phone rebooted but not past the animation. Get an "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1" error when booting into recovery. Looks like the internal SD is fried.
I'm going to bring it in to get repaired when I get home, buy a Desire Z and sell the Galaxy S when I get it back. I have no doubt that any fix will just be temporary.

MDA - 850mhz

Quick question!
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this before or not BUT! I just got my MDA today and with any other phone I can connect to Cellular One DCS up north here but my MDA won't show Cellular One at all? Has it somehow lost 850mhz coverage? I'm lost on how this can be. Any ideas? Where I am has great 850 coverage too btw. Thanks!

Well, I have added spb pocketplus, backup and upgraded to the 2.26.10.2 rom from T-Mobile. Other than that, that's it. I'm going to backup my stuff though and then reinstall the rom. See if that helps. Otherwise I'm lost on this.
Yeah soo that did nothing.. :\ No clue what is going on. Maybe I'll call T-Mobile and see if they have any idea or get a replacement or something

have you tried just flashing the Radio ROM to something like the 2.19 or 2.61 to see if that does anything for you...

Alright will do and report back when I can thanks
Update: Good news is that it does work with 850 band. The reception is VERY poor though. I had an MDA before this and it was great inside my room but this one is very very poor in comparisson. Perhaps I will get an exchange.

Just fyi... the first two steps are wrong. If you put the phone on download first and then open Odin it will not see the phone. Just figured I would throw this out there in case anyone tried it and couldn't get it to work.

It's correct. You don't plug in the USB until Odin is open so it's not a problem.

I have been testing this since 6:20am this morning. So far:
1-signal strenght is adequate for calls and data (I will test different areas tomorrow afternoon where I have had problems with other modems)
2-my exchange account disappeard and I have set it up again in Roadsync
3-time and date reverted to European time and date about 3:30pm

Can you give a quick intro on the first thread about what the JPK modem is and how it compares to other modems.
I tried this in place of the jpm modem that I had with the i9000 rom I put together with the reorient kernal a few days ago and it seemed almost identical to the jpm modem. But with jpk, all bands are enabled by default unlike the jpm modem. Everything else seemed identical to jpm like signal strength and weak signals where I would normally have a decent signal. Other popeople may have better luck, but it just seems so far I haven't found a hsupa modem that matched the quality of ji6

ya its weird with these modems, it like all or nothing even with all the same bands as ji6. its like when there is data, its blazing fast, but then i can move 10 feet and have no service or data when my wifes captivate will have full bars and 3g. its almost like its a band switching problem but around my house i get the same band almost all the time so it shouldnt be switching so i dont know. im starting to give up until theres a better modem released.

This is incorrect.
You dont get all bands by default chose automatic then go to select band and 850 will be removed.
also JI6 fc'ed when it gets a data conection.
is it because i am using it with the i9000 fw.
anyone with cog beta 9.1 how is it?
does it have the same problems we have with the reorented kernal and i9000 fw

When I flashed jpk, all my bands were enabled. Which is why I said unlike jpm. I know that on jpm 850wcdma is not enabled. You cannot use ji6 with reorient kernel or an i9000 rom it will soft reboot everytime the data connects. You have to use something like jpk or jpm or or of the other hsupa modems

Ok, I just updated from Tayutama's 1.0.2 with the JPK modem to 1.0.3 by the patch.
When I first flashed this rom the 850 WCDMA was not selected in the Debug service menu. I went in and activated the 850. This was the JPM modem.
Earlier this week I flashed the JPK with Odin and checked the service menu and 850 was active.
Tonight when I flashed the update JPM was reinstalled through the patch and in the service menu 850 was active.
No real point just an FYI
i get a better signal with jpk instead of ji6/jpm....plus i have to use it lol
I've had no luck getting any of these modems to function with GSM 850..
WCDMA works but no GSM, and in the mountains GSM 1900 sucks at best.

This problem vexed a bunch of us, but was solved about a week ago. Follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8833581&postcount=165
We don't know why it works, but it does. You need to start fresh with the JG8 modem, verify 850GSM is working, then build your desired configuration from that starting point.

URGENT!!!!! Vodafone have messed up

On the Vodafone Forum we have just found out that on Vodafones latest update 2.2.1 they have taken off GSM Mode only in the network settings.
This is there latest Rom there version of JS3 not JPY Now the stock JS3 has this feature still on it, they said they did not like JPY to much battery drain, well if your in a area with no 3G and the phone is set to gsm/WCDMA auto then the phone is trying to find a 3G signal and this will drain the battery as the phone is set to use WCDMA as a priority ( Info on this from Samsung Direct) I have told them and they could not believe what they have done and it has slipped through there radar he is emailing various people about this as this is a main spec of the phone i no not many of you guys are on VOD firmware but i thought you may want to no if any one comes on wondering or asking for help on this

So? Vodafone sit on new ROMs like there's no tomorrow...
Vodafones reply at the moment was
Hi NDJ,
Just to clarify, I've not confirmed we're aware of a problem- I just said we'll take a look at it.
Using 3G doesn't actually make much of a difference at all to battery life compared to using 2G, so I'd always recommend against switching down anyway as you miss out on performance. There's a thread explaining it here.
As soon as we have any more information, we'll let you know
We have proved that 2g uses less battery they have remove a stock android function that is on all android devices
Interesting thread. I had a similar issue on my SGS a while ago when I flashed JS3 PDA with the JP7 (Vodafone) CSC and the JP5 (Vodafone) modem. I lost the 'GSM only' option and thought at that stage that it was a JS3 thing. It turned out that the JS3_JP7_JP5 combination doesn't play well together and when I switched to the JPY CSC the option was back and everything was fine. Try flashing the JPY CSC and see if you get the option back. IIRC, I packaged up JS3 with JPY CSC and JP5 modem and flashed the entire package to get it back, I never tried flashing just the JPY CSC but it may be worth a try! Incidentally, what CSC are they providing with their 2.2.1 ROM?
I don't no i do not its on samsfirmware as a one file firmware Orange users got theres to day and there fine. Most that have the problem are rolling there firmware back via kies why have they used this csc i no they sent jpy back cos they came out with it had massive battery drain. Plus the Vodafone firmware is making the phone hot as well
If it's chewing battery and making the phone hot it deffo sounds like they have the modem working overtime! Well done Vodafone.. top marks for quality control!! Yet another good reason to stick with flashing with Odin as you can have at least some control over what you put on your phone that way!
Personally I'm using the JS7 PDA with JPY CSC and JS1 modem and my phone is running beautifully and giving the best battery life I've ever had!

You need to open the tar file from Samfirmware and extract the separate files. Once you have the files you want to mix and match from various versions you tar them back up using the tar command on a linux machine or something like Cygwin on a Windows machine. Ramad put together a good tutorial on how to do this a while ago (sorry, I can't find a link to it right now but you'll find it if you search).
First thing i have done when i see the laggy Vadofone Bootlogo at startup is to get rid off this firmware via odin for good. Now running JS8. Real fast as it should be...

Bell SGS on JS8 with JQ1 modem = success

So I got sick of bad gps, high battery drain, lots of lagging.
I was on official 2.2 JL2.
here's what I did:
- used titanium backup to backup everything
- installed the modified e3 recovery hack to allow unsigned kernels
- installed latest DamianGTO Ultimate Kernel (just a way to get ClockWorkMod) - installed using ODIN
- booted into clockwork to do a factory reset (wipe everything)
- cooked up a custom Doc's rom using all of the latest (hardcore kernel, JL8, JQ1 modem, bell CSC file, etc etc)
- installed the cooked rom via CWM
- boot up, download titanium backup, restore all important apps (good time to purge)
That's it!
GPS has improved 10 fold. Even on first boot, I got a lock within 10 seconds. It used to take 2-5 minutes!
Data and voice quality seem to be the same as before.
I'll report back on battery life, but there's no way it can get worse than it was before.
Just wanted to share, since I could not find ANY conclusive info on what does and doesn't work with Bell phones. So there you go, it works, and its worth it.

I still have 850, no fancy options to tweak, its just working.
GPS accuracy and lock is impressive! on par with any other gps device I have ever used. I love my phone again!
For the first time since it was new I went a full day without charging. Used gps nav lots, streamed a tv show, installed lots of apps and tried them, played some games. (I'm travelling and stuck in an airport - bored!)
The phone is really, really fast.
I have not encountered any issues yet!

Is this your first custom ROM?
So this JQ1 modem has our precious 850 band?
Looking forward to hearing more about it.
When i try JQ1 with Doc Rom, i lose my 850mhz band which means no data
Negative here on getting it so easily. Made an update.zip at Rom Kitchen with JQ1 and installed.
Usually I get mostly 850 here at work, now nothing but the 1900. Smother the phone with my hands to get it to go down from 3 bars to 1 and still no 850. Back to JL2 for now.
Check yours with *#0011# in dialer to confirm 850.
I cooked up doc's rom with the OP's recommended settings and can confirm that 850mhz wcdma does work.
maybe its related to the CSC file ? make sure you select BMC when cooking that rom.

I got data when I had JQ1 installed for a few minutes. 949/2240 on a speed test, pretty typical for a 'non-dead' time around here, I think the phone mostly uses 1900 when I'm in this office downtown office tower anyways.
I have BMC CSC. Maybe I'll try it again when I'm at home.
Might like to get a new modem working as I think reception was better with Eclair JH2 (used to get reception in work and home elevators all the way). Of course back then I had a different motherboard inside the phone too...
Franky i have had no issues JL2 since i flashed Doc's ROM. Phone and data are excellent but then again i really didn't test much before that i had Darky 8.1 and everything was normal then to.
On Darky GPS was slow took a minute or so since it was EU modem. JL2 locks in about 30 seconds whenever i turn it on, I just did it in front of my desk in the house and it locked in about 40 seconds.
I will say this whenever i flash a ROM even if using the same modem i sometimes can't get it to lock at all even after 10 minutes it will not lock. The way to fix it is to clear the GPS Data using SGS Tools > Secret Codes > GPS - Test and Setting > Delete GPS Data > close GPS >Start it Again > Get Position TESt
I just clear the Data 2 -3 turn off GPS, reboot the phone > turn on GPS and do a test that way you get the most accurate results from a cold boot. This is part of my regular steps to do after flashing a ROM weather it helps or not it has never failed me once.
yeah not sure why some of you are not getting 850, or why you would have no data.
Is it maybe area specific?
Maybe if you are in an area that has no 850 coverage it will not show?
I installed in Toronto, it worked, I flew to Vancouver, it still works...

I second that..I'm in Toronto and have flashed every kind of modem you could think of and data was never an issue. I did end up with only 1900 sometimes but there is a way to go into your phone and set it to 850 just can't remember the code......its in xda somewhere

Same here, never had an issue with data in Toronto
I've also found a way to fix the GPS, using the romKitchen (romkitchen.org if you want to find it) I was able to build a custom rom that worked very well with the GPS, I'm actually testing battery life today after a full charge. I used the XWJS8 base rom, with the hardcore kernel and the jl2 modem with the CSC as BMC..
Setting or checking 850 Band
Hi Guys,
There are a few ways you can set the 850 band; Secret codes, SGS tools, SGS Info etc.
The fastest app is SGS Tools; open this app and select the first option of Secret Codes, then scroll down to "Band Selection" if you select this it should bring you right into the Band Selection menu.
You now need to select [2] WCDMA BAND[*], it should then bring you to the next screen where you need to select [1] WCDMA ALL and then press Select WCDMA ALL BANDS[*].
Back out of the menu and then go back into it. Now select [2] WCDMA BAND[*] and you should see a[*] beside the 2100 / 1900 and 850 bands.
I hope this helps

So I got sick of bad gps, high battery drain, lots of lagging.
I'll report back on battery life, but there's no way it can get worse than it was before.
Just wanted to share, since I could not find ANY conclusive info on what does and doesn't work with Bell phones. So there you go, it works, and its worth it.

We're still waiting for more details on battery life. What kind of drain are you seeing over the day and overnight?

You'll also have to disable all the others in order to have the 850
That's probably why most rom won't work "out of the box", as they have 900 enabled instead of 850

[Q] Focus on Europe Orange, which FW is better?

I have a Focus from ATT, unlocked and upgraded to Mango. I really have slow 3g speeds...no matter what hack I use, no clue why...on initial NoDo it was faster...
Is there a generic WP7Rom for Samsung?
Is running Rogers ROM more friendly to the European carriers?

While Rogers Rom is the cleanest and most close to the "stock" Focus rom, if you have an AT&T I suggest you stick with that. Both behave the same with EU carriers, I've tested both.
If your phone is originally on AT&T, you should know that all updates are released by the original phone carrier. Zune passes the phone's IMEI to MS servers, which according to their database, it's on AT&T. Even if you flash Rogers rom, your updates will still come from AT&T.
As for speed, they're exactly the same. Customization is different and as I said, Rogers is cleanest. If you don't care about unlock, you should probably stick with Rogers.
3g speed
I read and read, all hacks done...still 16-18ko/sec...less than EDGE.
I asked the initial question because everything seems out of pace with the ATT rom, GPS data and so on... on NoDO it was behaving great, maybe I should stick to it

What you can do, is go to Diagnosis, and make note of the settings in Mango (I suggest a camera for this). Then go back to NoDo (restore) and compare those. Tedious, but if there's a difference that's where you'll find it.
WTF?
It seems that the WP7 doesn't get well with data connections
Results with T-Mobile in Hannover (No H+ signal):
The same SIM card:
Samsung Galaxy s2 7Mb/S download 1.9 upload-
Samsung Focus Rogers: 0.014 M down 0.01 up
HTC HD7: 1.42 down 0.01 up
Went to O2 store, tried OMNIA7 demo with my sim card---slooowwww
Is the 3G sign supposed to change into something if it gets 3G+?

Not by default. You'd need to edit registry for it to show 3G+ or install Advanced config. and tick a box there.
As per 3G speed, I also have an AT&T Focus and, although it shows 3G+ most of the time, it certainly is slow. I thought it is caused by 3G range frequencies with AT&T not being the same as with Russian providers. But since you report Omnia is behaving the same way I don't know what to think.
Edit. I also suspect Internet Sharing effecting my 3G connection. I think 3G speed was better before I've enabled Internet Sharing.
I really don't know what to say about this issue, it is quite strange.
In the first day I got the Focus, I popped the SIM card inside to take it for a drive ( before rolling back to 7004 to hack it and then Nodo) it behave OK with the internet speed ( I noticed bing and IE were fast). I flashed the 7004 ATT rom and updated to Mango. Then I noticed that it crawls when getting apps from Market place. I tried too install Angry Birds(20 mega) and there were 1% increments every 20 seconds or so. I got puzzled and double checked the web and XDA for info...it is slow as a snail compared to my other phones no mater what I did. I know that this could be subjective also, but really? .01megs/sec?
I am thinking of flashing only the radio from an Omnia7, someone reported that he flashed the whole ROM and it was OK except some buttons were upside down.
Anyway, 2100 3g+ should be the same everywhere... I think that the protocols ( like handshaking, wtc) inside the radio differ among carriers overseas...
Samsung should post a generic ROM for this device....
