Erasing the DHD via HTCSense will delete personal data on sd card!!! - Desire HD General

HI @ all!
Yesterday I tested the erase function on HTCSense.com.
I worked perfetly but erased also my personal data an the sd card like music, videos AND the preinstalled navigation software!
So be careful if u want to check out this feature!!
It´s quite logical that even the data on the sd card will be affected - but I wasn´t aware of that yesterday.
Anybody experienced teh same here?
Greetz!

Yep that's right. Page 166 of the User Manual says:
"... Erasing your phone contents
If there’s no chance of getting your phone back, you can erase the contents of the phone and the installed storage card so no one sees sensitive information on your phone.
There’s no way to recover your phone and storage card data after you erase the contents so be absolutely sure before you proceed.
1. On your computer, open your web browser and sign in to your HTCSense.com account.
2. Click Dashboard.
3. Click Erase Phone.
4. When asked to confirm, click Erase Phone. ..."
My emphasis .....
Dave

Isn't that the whole idea of wiping your phone remotely? ---- to protect your personal data not to be seen/used by the thief. At least you have proved that feature does work properly.

Soooooo...I guess reading the manual has become overrated
I'm sorry, I just had to

No question - thats the idea behind this.
But whats with the navigation software??? Thats not really a "personal information" Thats part of the system I bought...
B.t.w.: The user manual is also wiped... lol!

Data recovery?
It would be interesting to find out just how well the data is erased - is it possible to attempt to recover the data on the SD card using some data recovery software?
I guess the hopeful answer is NO, you shouldn't be able to but it would be good to prove it, unless someone's already researched this?

If you give me a recovery sw, i can test this..
@ M_T_M: n.r.t.f.m.
But I don´t care about the few mp3´s... i care about the navigation!

Can you store locations on the Nav, like where you live? I know TomTom advise against storing your actual 'home' location on the devices, as if it gets stolen then the thief then knows where you live - and they may now know that you aren't home.
I'm more concerned about someone hacking into HTCSense.com and being able to lock my phone, or erase everything off it. I hoped the website would be as secure as a bank website is, instead of just a simple username and password.

Actually maps can tell a lot about you. For one it can give the region of world you are in by the maps you downloaded, but more importantly if you have routes saved, it can give away your address.

Closing thread now....derailing off-topic...

decrypt my memory card

hello,
before i start i have to excuse me for my bad english!
Now to my Problem:
Yesterday I updated my Firmware at my Xperia and before i crypt my memory card, and now i cant read my own memory card!
Can someone help me?
It is not possible. That's the goal of that encryption... bad luck.
Do someone know where the key is saved?
yeah encryption is a thing where vistas paraniod user rights control would make sense
people should only! ever encrypt their sdcards if the data not falling into the wrong hands is much more important then the data being lost
same deal with encrypting ones harddisk on a the pc really

Wait, what? I so don't agree with that!
You should always encrypt your HDD/SDCard etc if you consider that someone else getting that information might be prejudicial to yourself, your image, etc.
It has nothing to do with the data being lost or not.
Encrypted or not, once the phone/hdd leaves your posession, the data is "lost". The only thing to discuss now is whether or not somebody seeing that information might gain some advantage over you (be it by reading emails, viewing personal info and so on).
Lol...its like saying, locking the house should only be done if someone else stealing your stuff could gain more than what you lost !?
I know this is not the place but for those people wanting security:
http://www.truecrypt.org/
This is one hell of an encryption utility (and it's free) for your PC
PM me if you need infos on how to use it

HD2's in-built SD card encryption. Anyone used it? Are my naughty pics safe?

As my local police have kindly put up signs warning of a rise in muggings outside my local London Tube station I expect one day to lose my phone to a gang of knife wielding 13 year olds on stolen bikes as I stumble back drunken from the West End.
So as to stop naked pictures of me and my friends being taken from my SD card and posted all over the internet I am quite interested in the HD2's built in SD card encryption. Do any of you more technically minded members rate the encryption? Or is it some jokey consumer-grade pseudo encryption that can be broken with ease?
oops, wrong thread sorry
I've never used it, so I can't be sure about this, but I imagine it just means that you can't use the SD card in another device, after it's been encrypted.
If it's in the phone when you're phone is "acquired" by said hoodies, then I guess they'll have access to them anyway.
I reckon backup and delete is the only safe way to stop your risqué pics appearing on this site when there's a new member asking how to turn on their lock screen "cos it worked this morning".
How many friends? Are they all close friends or do you have pictures of naked acquaintances? Are you a naturist?
Why not just show us and let us judge whether or not they are worth encrypting?
Joking aside, as further to what Mr johncmolyneux said, the program could detect when you are trying to open a file that you have encrypted and ask you for a password? I don't have mine handy to try it.
Regardless of the effectiveness of the the built in encryption, your better off using a third-party utility to hold any "sensitive" content.
For my business docs and all, I personal use the free opensource FreeOTFEPDA program and recommend it wholeheartedly!
http://www.freeotfe.org/
just a quick warning....if you hard reset the phone the sd card will be inaccessible.

That's the name of one of our party games.
If you're using Microsoft's MyPhone service, if your phone ever gets stolen you can go on their website and use a couple of their neat features:
Lock your phone
Lock your phone so that it cannot be used by anyone else. You can also enter a message to display on your phone's screen to tell the finder how to contact you.
Erase your phone
Erase your phone and storage card to ensure that your data is safe. Your phone will be restored to the factory default settings.

It'd help if it ever gets stolen... as long as you remember to get on the website in quick time

External SD card not secure

Hi, I lost my phone and just found out from Samsung that the SD card has no built in security. If phone is found anyone can access all files on SD Card. Just an FYI - beware.
Sd card can be protected with password and when you put them in new phone or any other device you need that password to open them don't know if android have the setting
What did you expect ? It's flash memory.
I think the Secure stands for "it's not gone if it loses power".
OMFG ROTFL...
@ OP: when you are buying a car, and leaving the keys inside, are you warning all buyers that it may be stolen???
first, if you must make a porn photoes of your gf, put it immediately on something like Intergal Crypto, and do not watch it in sub on your phone.
Second, if you really must look on it at work, install something, like Droid Crypt or LUKS Manager...

I have no idea what you are saying...LOL Firstly no porn was involved, just has my apps , music, and an encrypted excel file...just don't like the fact that Samsung provides PIN access to the phone but it doesnt subsequently provide security to the SD card attached to the phone at same time.
Samsung and Google are thinking that anyone interested would use the Encryption Manager Lite, LUKS manager or Droid Crypt from the Market.
If you want encryption, THINK first, then DO an effort to install it. Simple? not for all, as I see...
True: BAD Google, BAD Samsung, they gave you too advanced machine
Apologies on their behalf.
Nothing to do with how advanced the machine is...but if they advised people to add additional security to the SD card, it would have been appreciated, so you don't find out when it is too late, like I did. I post this as an FYI for all.
One simple question: on your car's windscreen, do you have a warning: while leaving your car, take the keys with you and close it?

How to get back my pictures, contacts, text messages and other files?

Hi, there!
Yesterday, my little son formatted my Samsung Galaxy phone as he was playing with it. All my saved pictures, contacts, text messages and other files on the inner memory card were gone. So, I am wondering whether there is a way for me to get them back. Do you know any way to help me get them back? Any idea can be appreciated! Please, help me!

OK! Don’t worry! In this technological era, the accidental formatting problem cannot be a big deal. The deleted files often can be easily restored with the help of a data recovery program.
So, in your case, I hope you can act carefully to restore all your wanted files back as below:
1. Stop using the Samsung phone right now in case that any new file on it may overwrite your original data.
2. Plunge this phone to you computer so that you can begin to retrieve your data.
3. Download a phone data recovery program to retrieve all your lost data back.
Nowadays, there are plenty of data recovery programs available online. But, not all of them can work as efficiently as you think. So, you should select a most proper one for your data after doing much searching.
But, if you still doubt, you can firstly take chances with some phone data recovery freeware that work much more efficiently than some paid ones, such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
4. Do not save or back up all the restored data on the same phone in case of any data loss.
In the future, you should learn a lesson to be more careful about your data and always back it up well.
I hope my words can help you out!

5. Forget the technological era... Honestly, you are ****ed... If you do find a software that recovers the data... Let me know... Try google + (for pictures) this time around... At least pictures will not be lost the next time. Also always try to configure apps to save data on sdcard instead of internal memory. Take care...

Galaxy s5 g900a 5.0 - need help to recover deleted sms/text messages

Hello all.....I am trying to recover deleted text messages, pic/vid messages on my stock Samsung Galaxy S5, G-900A, running android 5.0 (lollipop). I have tried to utilize a few different android data recovery systems but all have failed in locating any of the deleted messages---likely because root access is required? I have looked everywhere and am under the impression that this particular phone still cannot be rooted due to the AT&T locked boot loader. I also understand that these types of deleted msg files can be overwritten with extend use after initial deletion, however, I am only concerned with messages to and from one particular person, and there hasn't been much use on the phone since they were deleted anyway. This was one of my company phones used by an employee and it is important that I recover these messages. In my conversations with the AT&T Legal Department I was informed that even with court ordered subpoena they do not have the actual messages to provide because they are "deleted from their servers within a few days", but they were able to provide me with the actual data/message/call logs---which doesn't really help me with the issue. I know that there has to be some way or method to locate and recover these messages-----PLEASE HELP------Thank you in advance.
Additionally, I would like to add that I am not at all concerned with any future functionability of this phone, not sure if that even matters---just thought maybe if there are any important apps/programs/functions were modified or deleted to gain access to these messages I am absolutely willing.
Also, is there any way to copy or save the phones hard drive to my computer and access these messages/files through another function on my laptop????
It's unlikely you can recover them, one thing you can try is imaging the phone as you mentioned though, I only know how you could do it in linux though so I'm not sure how much use that will be to you.

Could probably get the text messages printed out from your carrier for a price

Thank you very much.....Im not exactly sure what protocol is on this but I'm wondering if I could hire you or anyone else who might be interested to scan and locate these messages for me? I see that you live in houston, as do I; if it is possible to find these messages thru linux I certainly couldn't do it as I have no experience with that program/software.

Seems you might have less luck than I thought :/ this is what I could find about finding the messages https://cmanios.wordpress.com/2013/10/29/read-sms-directly-from-sqlite-database-in-android/ to get deleted ones though you'd have to recover the old db, which would be hard to do in and of itself with flash memory, and you'd be lucky to get anything out of what would likely be a partial database file, and that would be hard to read. On top of that, to get an image of anything, even unrooted user readable partitions(internal sd card) you need root, because the command can only be run from the phone it seems, since the phone is presently on 5.0 it's not possible to root it, so your chances are slim to none since no data recovery tool app on the phone would go to the location of the message db file, even if it did it would need root, and even then, to image the phone as far as I can tell also requires root. The only thing I can think of is removing the internal sd card, the ifixit teardown covers this kind of, the card isn't a standard microsd, so finding a way to mount it would be trivial(possibly re-soldering it to a usb?) , if you managed that though, then you might have a chance at attempting data recovery which as I mentioned earlier is already going to be 50/50. As for someone who you could pay for help with this, I can't think of any place, and I also would be of no help unfortunately, there may be someone on the forums or around town who will do it on their own behalf, as with before though I don't know anyone who could help with it though. All this said, it's all speculation for the most part, so I would wait for a second opinion by someone else before taking any action.

I sure do appreciate all of your help and consideration......i sure wish there was some other/easier way to accomplish this...however, i have been able to put the micro-sd card into a larger converter card thing and view on my macbook pro---although there are many many empty folders when i try to access them. Is there a particular file reader that i could download on laptop that would show any invisible files and allow me to view them? Sorry for the amateur questions....thanks again for your help.

The microsd card from the phone does not have any text messages as far as I know, won't help to look at that, you need the internal one used by the phone which is a soldered to the board.

In fact , the lost Samsung can be recovered back depends on whether the messages is completely deleted from Samsung ,you can restore deleted messages from Samsung from Samsung SD card ,or Samsung Memory card ,In addition, the program is also apply to almost all Android devices, including HTC, LG, Sony, Motolora, Google and so on. Hope this can help.
