[Q] Remote Access to T-Mobile Tabs - Galaxy Tab General

I was going through uninstalling some of the stock applications I knew I wasn't going to use with Root Explorer and came across "LogMeIn Rescue", a remote access tool for support personnel. I personally am not particularly happy that came pre-installed as I am not comfortable with the idea of T-Mobile personnel having remote access to my Tab and promptly removed it. Has anyone else come across this? Can anyone provide insight as to why it is there?

LogMeIn Rescue is for remote support, the way the tech works is the support agent (in this case t-mo) would attempt to create a remote access support session and give you a 6 digit code. You then enter the code into the logmein rescue app and it connects your device to the support techs pc/mac. I've used the support application on the tech end and the code must be entered into the phone app in order for it to connect (logmein offers a 14 day free trial). However, as of now, Android is not supported (there's support for pretty much every other platform) but i guess is on the drawing board. On T-Mo's end the idea is probably so the tech can help when a customer calls in, after all its easier to troubleshoot issues when you can see whats happening instead of just listening and trying to visualize it. This is just my guess based on my understanding of the technology.

M$'s new browser?

So around a month ago I saw Micro$oft advertise free downloads of their prototype browser, which looked like it directly competes with Apple's new iPhone browser. It shows the entire website and allows zoomage and all that jive stuff. I went to download it but they already closed the download when I arrived.
I immediately searched here to see if anyone was talking about it but to no avail. Now, I can't even remember it's name.
Does anyone know about this or where I could download this?

Deepfish works by going through Microsoft's server which does the processing. Each user has a unique registration code which is sent to deepfish's server with every use of the browser, so even if you do get a copy of the software, it's useless without your own code. They disable codes that are used by multiple people, so people are not likely to share. I posted my code here (or maybe at hofo) awhile back and I got a notice from the deepfish people explaining this, and telling me that my code was disabled. They sent me a new one, though, and suggested I not share it.
In my opinion the picsel browser that somebody posted here also is much better at the same functionality.
Ah, so it's Microsoft's version of skweezer or loband.org ... I'd feel a little uneasy sending ALL of my internet traffic via Microsoft's servers, they know too much about me already.
Might give the beta a go though should I ever get an invite.

Android still has a way to go before being all things to all people. It has the potential though so i'm sure we'll see improvements in the areas where it's currently weak.

Don't gey me wrong, I love my Android phone, just saying that Google is missing the boat on the Enterprise side of things. Used to have an iPod touch that worked flawlessly on our corporate intranet, can't say the same for my dinc. As the workforce continues to become more mobile, they'll be carrying iPads instead of Xooms or Galaxy tabs.

Why shouldnt they? Why should they have limitations. I say the more capabilities the better!
Universally, I don't understand Googles LACK of contact and attention to it's customers. Like most people are aware that e-mailing google is a complete WASTE OF TIME. I'd love to meet someone who has yet to actually get a meaningful response from google. I understand that they are a HUGE company and can easily get overwhelmed by emails, but the complete lack of response in general is UNACCEPTABLE. Why do they act this way, ESPECIALLY to their customers? Eitherway, they should respond in some way to all emails, understandable for free products, but for PAYING customers like us Android users, should get a response.
Google is worse than Sprint when it comes to response. I don't get it or understand.
I'm an IT Director for a medium sized medical manufacturing company and I've been testing ipads as a laptop alternative for our salesforce, and I have to say, I would be absolutely pissed if I had to use an ipad(or any tablet for that matter) for work.
Don't get me wrong. They work. But do you want to do all your work on them? HELL NO.
I have a remote desktop app on my mytouch 4g and I use it every now and then when I need to fix something or get onto the server for any reason. That doesn't mean I'm going to ditch my computer because my phone is capable of doing something my laptop does. Tablets, smartphones, mobile devices in general...they should be used to supplement computers, not replace them.
And as far as google 'not listening to their customers', you obviously haven't been on any sort of development team before. Especially not one that had any sort of fast progress. I don't know if you've noticed, but chip manufacturers have released dual core mobile cpu's. So google can either work on your vpn problem and appease a small number of enterprise users(people who will actually use a vpn on their phones), or they can concentrate on optimizing their code so it will work well with the next generation of hardware. They're obviously going to concentrate their manpower(or womanpower) on development for next-gen hardware. If the support ticket exists, they'll work on it. But there are thousands of them, and people need to realize that just because it's important to you specifically, doesn't mean it's an important problem. VPN access doesn't effect the overall functionality of the os during normal use, so it's going be put on the back burner, that doesn't mean it won't be fixed.
And whoever said go to pta meetings, PTA = parent teachers association. Good luck getting heard there.
While on the subject of fixes, I'm more concerned about linked market data and being able to transfer purchases to different accounts. I.E. switching from a google apps account to a gmail account. Also, the 'master account' crap. There should be a way to change which login you use to connect to gtalk and the market without having to reset your device to factory. That just sucks.
LOL, I used to get those "wake-up" calls from the 3rd shift platform operators. I got my butt out of bed, got on my PC and fixed the problem or marked it "next day" and fixed it when I got to work.
I can't see using a phone's screen size to debug a couple hundred lines of JCL or batch COBOL program Not to mention, I was usually talking to the operator at the same time I needed to see something on the PC; very hard to do with a phone.

problem 1. You can connect to a proxy (unless i'm not understanding your complaint) There's Proxy options under the settings menu.
Problem 2. I've noticed this but apparently some 3rd party browsers can do it.
Problem 3. Not sure about this one, but i connect to many different networks (public, domestic and at uni) and have never had a problem like this.
What you're saying is that you have various problems that the vast majority of people will never experience and you are wondering why Google aren't dropping everything to fix it immediately? These problems (to me at least) seem incredibly minor.

Because they already have your money, therefor they could care less. And they will continue to get your money, his money, her money etc because they make a product and provide a service that we all have come to rely on. They've got the hook set, you can't break free and they can let us dangle as long as they want.
But maybe the combination of google, samsung, and verizon has destroyed my outlook.

I think many of these issues will take a long long time to see resolved.
You need to consider what motivates google RE Android. Hint: It is not paying customers.
Thing is, normal market forces are not at work in the Android space. This is
my BIGGEST issue with Android.

You don't think your needs are most important ones, do you? There are many, many things to do, not only these mentioned by you.
For me your "This is Important" bugs are minor. Actually I didn't know about them to this time. I care much more about NDK APIs, performance and UI improvements and this is exactly what Google does.
Also there is one good reason to focus on new APIs, standard libraries, developer tools, etc.: Google is only one who can improve them and sooner is better. They could fix bugs at any time, they could also port them to older versions of OS. But if they add new API, it will take some time for developers to use it, because new API won't be supported by most of devices. So it's much better to work on a new features first and fix minor bugs later.

You have got that completely backwards. Iphone is not normal market space. Each manufacturer running android os have to set themselves apart from each other, hence skinning the os. If customers demand, need it, it will get fixed or innovated.
Apple controls all, What they say goes. Example: no flash, theming....
Amazon drops their android app store on tues. Why, market forces.

hey dude most of those issuses were fix sort of well i wouldnt say fix because google came out with a whole new O.S. most of ur issuses hav been resolved in the honeycomb os and greater but u dont need a fix u need a app that can handle what u need

No, or at least, not for several hundred people at least, some who have even provided logs of both sides of the conversation. Some bug comments are from companies, representing complaints from their customer base, so it is probably more. I could write an article that shows how to do it, too, but that doesn't mean that I've tested all combinations. If the author's VPN was not encrypted, he wouldn't have seen the problem, and--since his connection worked, and there's that encryption checkbox--he might have just assumed it worked. He might have even tried it: You can connect with encryption, you just can't stay connected for any length of time.

I can manually set a proxy, although there are reports that this is not a standard part of android, but a value-add by the phone mfr. A third-party program could perhaps recognize which WAP I connect to and set values accordingly, but only if I want everything to go through the proxy, and not just some things. That would have worked at HP, but my ulterior motive is to proxy a specific blocked port so that I can pop my email to my wifi tab. OK, I'll admit, my actual reason isn't a compelling case for Google! ;-)

I'm not surprised that some clever programmer patched around the breakage, but it needs to be solved generally. Really, this and VPN are the most important issues for me.

You have never had a problem like this that you know of! Most folks have been bitten by this when the run into a place with short leases, and only find out--if they do--by accident, since most places don't check for violators.

For the person who asserted that these are fixed in the latest release, that doesn't appear to be the case, according to the bug reports.
Are there really people who use their portable device for work? Not if it is android-based! (I know, cheap shot, but--for many of us--a true statement).
I have a galaxy tab. With working VPN and ssh, I could login and do a simple database change "echo blah blah blah|mysql", restart a job, whatever. I'm not going to write a couple of thousand lines of code, but I might look at a couple of thousand lines of a log file! Instead, I have to fire up the PC, which means I have to be around the PC, and I'd rather have the freedom of mobility.

Mobile phone Intrusion Detection System

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and after having a solid look around the site I have been unable to find anything that comes close to what I have in mind.
I am currently a student at Edinburgh Napier University and I am looking into the possibility of creating a local Intrusion Detection System on a Smartphone. One capable of informing a user that an intruder is currently attempting to gain access to their device and carry out malicious activities.
Has anyone managed to find anything I have not as I am under the impression that no such software exists for any type of Smartphone device. My main consideration is with Windows Phone but I would like to hear about anything that is out there that relates to this.
Any help would be amazing.

I know people have gotten Ubuntu running on various mobile devices, but it'd be interesting to see how SNORT (or similar) plays with mobile hardware.
The problem you are going to have (not unsurmountable) is that if you ignore the infosec/marketing what you have out there is primarily black box IDS devices, with capabilities to also run as an IPS.
However only the most nieve such as UK Gov & Local Gov have( certainly none of the Tier 1 Inv.Banks I have worked for) have switched IPS on for fear of backlash. It would be something if developed I would be interested in seeing, certainly if it could act as an IDS on a Ad-Hoc VPN there is commercial opportunities there....
So ask yourself - are you REALLY wanting to BOTH Detect and Prevent or merely Detect and Acknowledge. The latter a more easy task, less of a hit on functionality.
Perhaps there is an old Cybertrust source code now opensource....as a thought for you, but it would need reengineering as was a custom image.
In the meantime if what you actually want is Single IP/MAC/Hardware protection - why not root the device, install Synodroid (to control who or what has SU equivalent access) & DroidWall (firewall to limit traffic) & do an audit of the Apps you have downloaded of the rights requested. Perhaps setup a VPN to your university network or local broadband router (if you trust who manages them) so at least there is another layer to go through. However if you someone who opens zip's//tars on the device with install privileges elevated then your accepting the consequences. (Above Android related)
There is bound to be an IP traffic audit tool app - so you could use to Record a 24/26/48 hour period of the address ranges and what process linked back. But as you then start moving down the completely pain in the neck Firewall Rule analysis piece and SIEM world, don't!

[ROOT] Instructions for Airplay Screen Mirroring / Display Extension on the FireTV

Long time reader, first time posting.
Install requires root.
Squirrel LLC just released an android version of their app Reflector ($7). This app can be installed fairly simply on the FireTV, turning it into an airplay receiver for screen sharing and display extension, not just video or audio playing.
This requires root (instructions here) and the google play store (instructions here- they are for kindle, but work) before you can install this program.
Once you have the play store installed and you are signed in, you will be able to install apps remotely. This is much easier, as the play store is somewhat difficult to navigate on the Fire TV itself. However, Google will think the Fire TV is not compatible with Reflector.
To circumvent compatibility restrictions, download Market Helper and install on your FireTV (sideload instructions here). This will allow you to spoof your device type and install the app. I used the Nexus 7 as the device type. Make sure you've run google play services and signed into the play store before you run this, so it can read your id. The activate buttons are invisible until you are selecting them, so just press down and over until you find what you want.
After setting up your Fire TV to look like a Nexus 7, head back to the play store and set Reflector to install remotely.
From here, you can use any airplay device to broadcast to the Fire TV!

I wasn't able to get this to work in Extend Desktop mode with my Mac. Since there's only a 15 minute refund period, I already got the refund, so it's possible I was doing something wrong, but the Play description didn't mention Extend Desktop mode. I don't see how I was doing anything wrong though, since the only settings in the app is the Name and the Password (and I didn't set a password). I did remember to turn off AirPlay in my other AirPlay app before trying Reflector.
Prior to this, I was already using AirReceiver to handle IOS mirroring. If all you want is IOS mirroring, I believe it was less expensive. Since it was bought through the Amazon store, it shows up with an icon on main screen (in my Apps and Recent sections). I don't recall if you can buy it on the FireTV or not, but I think so. A Voice search for Air Receiver brings it up.

We've actually submitted Reflector to the Amazon Fire TV store. The approval process is a bit more lengthy and involved than normal Google Play submissions.
As for extended desktop from a computer. It should work alright. I'de be interested in seeing logs from this to see why it didn't work for you. You can email our support team and they'll be happy to get it working!

Reflector is a paid app, and I have no experience sideloading paid apps / getting a signed apk out of one. I found it to be easier to root and install the play store than to bother with that. If you are aware of an easy method to get the APK out of a paid app, I'd love to hear it- I always pay for my apps, but sometimes I need to install them in a dev environment where the play store isn't available, and I'd like to know.
If you're concerned about rooting, I'd consider the advantages. Rooting is a piece of cake now thanks to Towelroot, and it gives you uped duper more functionality than you have without it, especially if you are using this device to run XBMC primarily.

Thanks for the good customer support. I figured it was the Amazon store's lengthy submission process that was holding things up and not an actual compatibility issue, which is why I decided to hack this together.
I own no other Amazon devices (and probably won't), so it's to my advantage to keep all my purchases within one ecosystem. You may consider adding a little walkthrough on how to use the google play store to run your app on the firetv to your page, if you guys aren't fearful of the wrath of Bezos. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who bought the firetv for the android, not the amazon.

I'm not sure what happened there for you. Extended display was the default for me. That being said, the other app could have interfered, or maybe your settings in OSX weren't correct. I wish I could help you more, but Airplay is finicky enough as it is, without adding third party software. Maybe get in touch with Sid about that.
If anyone else is interested in this, my brother managed to get airsquirrel to work with reflector on the firetv, but it seemed to be more laggy than with true airplay. I'm not sure if that was the fault of his laptop or the software, so that might be worth looking into if you're a diehard windows user like I used to be.

I have an android phone that I download the google play app to and then use Es file explorer to back up the app. Then sideload it to the firetv.

Automatically reopen android/ios app after x minutes

We're building an app that will be installed on smartphones and displayed on a desk. The user need to be able to close the app and use the device, but when he does not use the device the app should move to the front automatically after X minutes.
Here is the catch: we need to support new devices for the coming 3 years and the user should not be able to close/kill the process.
Android: We found that we could use the permission BIND_DEVICE_ADMIN to make the process unkillable. However it will be deprecated soon and we have no idea how long it will remain functional.
iOS: We found no solution
Does anybody have a workaround/solution or does somebody know how much longer they will support the BIND_DEVICE_ADMIN permission?
I know it seems like something fishy, but it's actually intended for distribution internally via our company MDM and it makes sense in the context we are using it for.
